Start Of The School Year Filled With
Sunshine In North Babylon
There was plenty of sunshine to celebrate the first day of school in North Babylon School District on Sept. 5. Students and staff were all smiles as they were welcomed back for the start of the 2023-2024 school year.
Students started the day off early in North Babylon High School and Robert
Moses Middle School as staff and administrators greeted them at the building entrances.
To help get acquainted with their new environments, the district’s youngest learners in prekindergarten and kindergarten had their own special drop off times in their respective
buildings. With their backpacks filled to the brim, elementary students were also welcomed back to their building and had time to settle in, get acquainted with their new classrooms and reconnect with friends.

North Babylon BSA Troop 399 Eagle Scout Project Caterpillar Tunnel At Homecoming Farms
On August 27, 2023, Troop 399 Eagle Scout candidate Liam Kieran planned, led, and oversaw the assembly and placement of a Caterpillar Tunnel at Homecoming Farms in Amityville, NY as his Eagle Scout
project. Liam planned the structure, fundraised for and purchased the necessary materials, solicited volunteers, and oversaw all the work needed to build the tunnel.
He was assisted by many scouts and adult
volunteers from Troop 399. The Caterpillar Tunnel is a mobile, tubular greenhouse protecting plants from environmental threats like heat, cold, insects, and animals. Homecoming Farm grows organic produce to provide
healthy nourishment to Long Island’s hungry.
Boy Scout Troop 399 is a Boy Scout Troop based in North Babylon, NY, and is a member of the Sagtikos District of the Boy Scouts of America’s Suffolk County Council.
The North Babylon Lions Club sponsors Troop 399. Originally chartered in 1975, Troop 399 has offered scouting opportunities and taught boys to become leaders and serve their community for over 40 years. Meetings

Due to the significance of Yom Kippur, Jews refrain from working on the holiday. That includes high-profile professional athletes. In fact, Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Sandy Koufax, a practicing Jew, famously refused to pitch in Game One of the 1965
World Series because the game was scheduled to take place on Yom Kippur. Religious services on Yom Kippur bear such significance that some congregations seek additional space to accommodate all worshippers. While the 25hour fast is a significant component of the holiday, some people are exempt from fasting. Women who have recently given birth, the sick, and the elderly are allowed to eat during Yom Kippur. Those who observe the fast do
so because it is believed to cleanse the body and spirit. As significant as the fast is, food still plays an essential role in Yom Kippur observations. For instance, feasts on the eve of Yom Kippur tend to be plentiful, so people who will fast can gather strength for the holiday. In addition, once the fast has ended, another festive meal takes place.

Hitherdell Lane In North Babylon To Be Renamed In Memory Of North Babylon Resident John Heegan
On September 23rd at 11am, Hitherdell Lane in North Babylon will be renamed in honor and in memory of long-time resident John Heegan. John was a staple in North Babylon for years, who volunteered his time and effort into bettering the community.
John began working with the North Babylon Volunteer Fire Company in 1981. He was assigned to Station #2 and given badge #253. During his time here he held various roles and titles. This included 2nd Lieutenant from 1986 to 1987, 1st Lieutenant from 1988 to 1989, Captain from 1990 to 1991, 2nd Assistant Chief from 1992-1993, 1st Assistant Chief from 1994 to 1995 and Chief of Department from 1996 to 1997. After almost twenty years of service, he was ultimately granted a life membership on May 27th, 1999.
In the meantime, John also
joined the New York City Fire Department (FDNY) in 1993 and was assigned to Engine Co. 271 in Brooklyn. He was awarded a unit citation in 1994 and eventually transferred to Ladder 124 in 2002 and after a decade of working with the FDNY, he retired in 2006. After retirement, he steered close to home and joined the North Babylon Lions Club in 2013. As a member of the Lions Club, this was where his contribution to the North Babylon community became evident through his generosity and time. He assisted with building the North Babylon Food Pantry in October of 2014 and building the Adopt A Spot 2013 on Sylvan Road and Deer Park Avenue. John was a craftsman when it came to woodwork and took his talent to the streets of North Babylon where he crafted wooden soldiers and decorations to adorn North Babylon in 2015.
He helped institute the American Flag program on Deer Park Avenue which began in 2013, the PS I Love You program in 2014 and the Lions Lacrosse Tournament in 2014 and 2015.
By his acts of service, it is evident that John Heegan left his mark in North Babylon. He gave all he had to better the community and served wherever he could. “It wasn’t what the town could do for him, but what he could do for his community,” said Terence McSweeney, Councilman of the Town of Babylon.
Hitherdell Lane in North Babylon will be renamed John Heegan Way on Saturday, September 23rd. In attendance will be John Heegan’s wife, three sons, his daughter, and members of the North Babylon Lions Club, North Babylon Volunteer Fire Company and all those that were impacted by John Heegan.
