The Charity of The Month for September is:

The West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition

For Long Island, Inc.

To accomplish their mission, they focus on pressing these goals: Prevention: Support, encouragement and education about a healthy lifestyle.

Research: To promote legislation to increase funding for environmental research and provide funding for specific breast cancer projects.

Education: Providing up-to-date information through their website, newsletter, information packets and education seminars. They offer adult and student awareness programs designed to help participants increase their awareness of Breast Cancer and gynecological cancers.

Services: To offer breast and gynecological cancer patients services paid for and facilitated by WIBCC via the “Lend A Helping Hand” program.

Lend A Helping Hand: The non-surgical modalities of treatment for breast cancer chemotherapy and radiation leave the patient in the need of a “Helping Hand”.

Awareness: Breast Cancer is survivable.

Awareness of the treatments available is key to beating it.

As like many other nonprofit organizations, the WIBCC holds various fundraising events throughout the year to gain awareness and collect funds in support of their mission. This September they are part of Stop & Shop’s Community Bag Program. WIBCC will receive a $1 donation every time a $2.50 reusable Community Bag is purchased at 400 Union Blvd in West Islip, unless otherwise directed by the customer through the Giving Tag attached to the bag.

Additionally, they are participating in John’s Crazy Socks Giving Back Program, which started September 1st and will run through October 31st. John’s Crazy Socks is a father-son social enterprise that was inspired by John Lee Cronin, a young man with Down Syndrome and his love of colorful and fun socks, or what he calls his “crazy socks”. John’s Crazy Socks has agreed to donate 10% of their net sales to WIBCC for every pair of socks purchased from their website, www.johnscrazysocks.com, when you enter the charity code FG-WIBCC20.

The West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition for Long Island, Inc. (WIBCC) is a non-profit grassroots organization that was founded in 1992.

They work to eradicate Breast Cancer and gynecological cancers. Their mission is to provide support services to women undergoing treatment and requiring postmastectomy care with their “Lead A Helping Hand” program, and to actively promote cancer and environmental awareness with education, advocacy and outreach throughout the community. They have stayed open throughout the pandemic and are truly here to serve our community.

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, 8.8 million young adults between the ages of 18 and 25 report having a mental illness. Among those who reported such illnesses, 42 percent indicated their illness went untreated.

Substance abuse disorders also are more common among 18- to 25-year-olds than many people may think. SAMHSA notes that 5.1 million young adults report having a substance abuse disorder, and 87 percent of those with disorders are not treated. Grandparents and seniors can share wisdom and a lifetime of experience with the young people in their lives. Expressing gratitude for such lessons is a great way to show the seniors in your life, whether it’s a grandparent, mentor or family friend, how much they’re appreciated.

Some seniors live alone, while others may be living with their adult children and grandchildren, offering care and support to help make the household function.

Whether grandparents, aunts and uncles or older

friends live close by or elsewhere, there are many ways for their loved ones to show them how much they’re appreciated.

Become pen pals.

Seniors may have limited mobility or opportunities to get out of the house.

Receiving mail is one way to connect with the outside world. Regularly send letters to a grandparent or other senior, sharing tales of daily life and key moments that will bring them joy. Chances are they’ll return the favor with a letter of their own.

Explore technology

Younger generations can introduce seniors to available technology that can bring them closer. This may include digital assistants that enable them to share videos, tablets to send email or access social media, mobile phones for calling and texting, and anything else families can customize to their needs.

Help aging loved ones perform the tasks that they may not be able to tackle on their own. This can include picking up groceries or prescriptions.

Many people plan to retire by a certain age, but few may actually still be working at their targeted retirement age.

In the United States, the age at which working Americans expect to retire has risen to 66. But a Gallup poll showed that most don’t stay on the job that long, instead retiring

when they’re about 60 or 61. In addition, according to a 2018 Employee Benefit Research Institute survey, 48 percent of workers wanted to retire after age 65, but only 19 percent of retirees stayed on the job that long. The reasons vary, but one positive outcome is

having enough money to live comfortably during retirement.

Still, early retirement largely involves unexpected scenarios.

These may include poor health, having to care for an aging parent, downsizing, new skills required for the job, or other work-related reasons.

On that day, nearly 3,000 innocent lives were lost due to the terrorist attacks in New York City and Washington, D.C. as well as in rural Pennsylvania, where another plane en route for more destruction crashlanded.

The indelible images of the World Trade Center collapsing in flames with crowds running for safety, as well as the ensuing visions of heroes and citizens working together, have created a lasting impression.

While buildings have been repaired and new sites erected in the wake of the attacks, there are many ways to continue to honor the fallen. Patriot Day, which takes place each year on September 11 to honor those who lost their lives in the 9-11 attacks,

is one such example. The following are a handful of ways that people can honor 9-11 victims and their families.

• Celebrate local heroes by visiting or making donations of food or supplies to local firehouses and police stations.

• Commemorate the events of 9-11 by observing moments of silence at key times throughout the day: 8:46 a.m, 9:03 a.m., 9:37 a.m., 9:59 a.m., 10:03 a.m., and 10:28 a.m.

• Engage in service projects that can help your community, including its underserved individuals, like veterans. National Day of Service, which is the same day as Patriot Day, asks people to do at least one good deed in honor of those who died on 9-11.

• Make a trip to New York City and visit the National September 11 Memorial & Museum.

• If you display a flag at your home or business, be sure to place it at half staff from sunrise to sunset to mourn the lives lost.

• Share stories of the heroism and bravery of first responders with young children who may not have been alive in 2001.

• Unite the country by promoting acceptance of and kindness to all people, regardless of religious or political beliefs.

• Visit memorials honoring the fallen in various communities in and around your home.

This Patriot Day, there are many ways individuals can honor those who lost their lives on 9-11.

Editor’s Note: The Patriot Day celebrated on September 11 is a separate holiday from Patriot’s Day, which is observed on the third Monday in April in Massachusetts.

Town of Babylon Community Development Block Grant Funding Now Available to Town of Babylon Residents for Home Improvements Community Development Corporation of Long Island (CDCLI), on behalf of the Town of Babylon, is accepting applications from Town of Babylon residents for their Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Home Improvement Program. This program provides deferred payment loans (zero percent interest) to qualified low and moderate income homeowners in the Town of Babylon in order to improve housing conditions and correct housing code violations by repairing and rehabilitating health and safety hazards, including lead-based paint removal.

Eligible Home Repairs / Improvements can include, but are not limited to, electrical improvements, accessibility improvements, insulation and energy conservation measures, new heating systems, new roofs, new windows and doors, plumbing, structural improvements and vinyl siding. Maximum income limits will apply when assessing program eligibility. Program Guidelines may be reviewed at www.cdcli.org.

A fully completed application, together with all supporting documentation, must be submitted. The Babylon Village Arts Council (BVAC) will sponsor its first Babylon Village Art Walk on Saturday,September 19, 2020 from 11-3. In collaboration with the Babylon Village Chamber of Commerce the Art Walk will celebrate the arts within the Village. This free community event will take participants on a stroll through picturesque Babylon Village with a map of the highlighted stops on the Art Walk, promoting both the artist and business. A ‘Where’s Warhol’ style family scavenger hunt will be a children’s component in which a dozen Andy Warhol characters will be hidden in windows

at locations throughout the village. Permanent art fixtures such as Jack Jack’s J2X Abstract Art Gallery,Village Art and Frame as well as the Bayman statue by artist and sculptor Jose I. Fernandez will be featured on the walk.

BVAC will set up a welcome station at Ooh la la Boutiques where maps can be picked up and there will be giveaways for children who find all of the hidden Warhol’s.

BVAC strives to create innovative programs for the community and artists of all ages. This event has been in the planning phase for over a year and members are excited to see it come to life this fall.

This is a self-paced event. Registration is not required. The rain date will be the Saturday, September 26. All social distancing guidelines will be followed as artists will be spaced out throughout the village.

It’s not chiggers! Every year thousands of people report itchy red bites from what they think is an encounter with chiggers. In fact, evidence shows there are no chiggers on Long Island.

It’s the larva of Lone Star ticks that’s causing those itchy red welts on your skin.

Lone Star larvae begin hatching in July and will remain active until the fall months. The newly hatched larval ticks will cluster in hundreds or sometimes even thousands which is why people will often get bitten many times, usually on the ankle’s, legs and waist. 3 Tips To Planning Efficient Home-Cooked Meals A few generations ago, dining out was an experience reserved for special occasions.

However, until recently, when restaurants were

shuttered in the wake of the public health crisis prompted by the spread of COVID-19, many people were dining out multiple times a week.

Hospitality solutions provider Fourth surveyed 1,000 American adults in 2019 and 56 percent reported dining out at least two to three times

per week. Ten percent said they ate out four to six times each week, while 6 percent said they dined out everyday.

People accustomed to relying on restaurant for meals multiple times per week may be unaccustomed to cooking many meals at home, which has become the norm thanks to restrictions placed on restaurants and other food-related businesses as part of COVID-19 social distancing precautions. Learning how to shop for food and prepare items by maximizing available ingredients can reduce trips to the store and help people reduce food waste at a time when food is not as readily available as it once was.

1. Plan meals/browse circulars Meal planning and shopping lists are vital tools for people preparing meals at home. Without

doing so, individuals can be left floundering in the supermarket, spending more money than necessary and making impulse purchases (all the while forgetting items they truly need). Use sales circulars to browse weekly discounted items at stores. Build a week’s worth of meals off of these sale items — going so far as to write out a cursory menu — then fill in any extra ingredients or staples needed on a shopping list. Leave a day or two for leftovers.

Try organizing the list to follow the natural layout where items are arranged in the store.

2. Shop smart With paper and pen in hand or a digital list compiled on your phone, go aisle by aisle and check off items as they are added to the cart.

If you are shopping for food you hope will last a week or more, consider

substituting canned and frozen foods and other nonperishables for fresh items because they can be stored for longer periods of time. “Club size” or “family size” packages of foods may cost less per volume and can be sub-divided and stored for later use.

3. Minimize waste Cook only as much as is needed for the household.

Generally speaking, a meat or poultry serving of three to four ounces per person is adequate. That means a roast or steak of 11⁄2 to two pounds is fine for a family of four.

Use up older frozen or perishable foods first.

Store foods properly and use them before the use-by date. Wrap up leftovers and turn them into new meals.

With proper planning and smart thinking, homecooking can be more efficient and less wasteful.
