Lightning Warriors To Host 4th Annual Mini Maniac Youth Triathlon

Lightning Warriors, a notfor-profit youth triathlon team, will be hosting its 4th annual Mini Maniac Youth Triathlon on Sunday September 17, 2023 at 7:00 AM at Cedar Beach in Mount Sinai, New York.

This year’s Mini Maniac event will be geared toward triathletes of all levels between the ages of 7 and 17. While all racers will be participating in a youth triathlon, races will be divided into three separate age groups with swimming, biking and running distances varying accordingly. Younger athletes are also encouraged to register to participate in the Splash & Dash event, which is a 50-meter swim and a quarter-mile run for athletes between the ages of 5 and 7.

“I am excited to see the smiles and accomplishments as each athlete crosses the finish line and for those first timers being called a triathlete,” says Lightning Warriors Head Coach Noah Lam.

All Mini Maniac participants will be able to take part in training clinics with the Lightning Warriors team in the months leading up to the triathlon. Favor bags will also be distributed to each racer, as well as medals for all finishers, awards for the top male and female finishers and post-race refreshments.

Participating in youth triathlons help build positive physical activity habits in children. According to Lam, “Every child should be able to swim, bike and run as those are lifetime skills… We’ve also seen that physical activity can provide immense benefits for mental health, more self-esteem, a sharper focus on achieving goals and a better ability to connect with other kids.”

Athletes’ individual skills will also be enhanced by being a part of a team in a healthy competitive and supportive space. “You get to find new ways to overcome adversity in a safe environment,” Lam states. These skills will thus motivate them to exuberate confidence and conquer their goals, both inside and outside of racing.

Senior advocates are County representatives who come out into the community and assist seniors with information gathering, completion of eligibility or recertification applications and referrals to appropriate community agencies.

New Assistant Superintendent For Curriculum At Babylon

The Babylon Union Free School District has hired Jeffrey Haubrich as its new assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction. He replaces Carisa Manza, who is now Babylon’s superintendent of schools.

Mr. Haubrich brings 25 years of experience in education to the role, including 18 in administrative positions. He previously served as principal of Babylon Memorial Grade School, where he was brought on for the 2022-2023 school year. “I had an amazing first year at Babylon Memorial Grade School, and I have had the pleasure of working with outstanding educators and

supportive members of our school community,”

Mr. Haubrich said. “I have seen great work being done throughout Babylon School District, and I am excited to engage in collaboration with all

stakeholders at the district level.”

Mr. Haubrich received his bachelor’s degree in human development and family studies from Cornell University, his master’s in elementary education from Boston University, and a certificate of advanced study in educational administration from Hofstra University. He was inspired to pursue a career in education while an undergraduate after observing a group of excited young teenagers at a Harlem Globetrotters basketball game. “I realized I wanted to spend the rest of my life around kids like this, and my interest deepened from there,” Mr. Haubrich said. “As I

began studying to become a teacher, my passion for public education developed. I was inspired by the role that it plays in creating an educated public that is so important to the success of our community and our country. It is a role that I take very seriously.”

Mr. Haubrich got his start in 1998 as a middle school teacher for the Port Washington Union Free School District. There, he became heavily involved in school activities such as student government, soccer and other various school programs. “It became an important part of my life, and I loved it,” he recalled.

“From there I thought about ways to affect

change on a larger scale and moved into the administrative track,” he said. In 2005 he became an elementary school assistant principal for the Half Hollow Hills Union Free School District, and in 2007, principal in the Northport-East Northport Union Free School District, where he spent 14 years in that role. In 2021, Mr. Haubrich briefly served as a building administrator in the Dorchester School District Two in South Carolina before returning to be closer to his family.

As assistant superintendent of curriculum and instruction, Mr. Haubrich said he looks to further improve instructional

continuity and communication between grade levels and between District buildings. He also looks forward to continuing to build trust and foster open lines of communication between the Babylon community and the District leadership.

“I am honored and excited to join the leadership team as assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction, and I am grateful for the opportunity to be in the role,” Mr. Haubrich said. “I am looking forward to all of the great work we will do together on behalf of our students and families.”
