INFORMATION:

The Town of Babylon recently received funding from New York State’s BRIDGE NY initiative to replace a crucial culvert in the community. The BRIDGE NY initiative combats climate change through the support of projects that reduce the risk of ﬂooding, improving structure resiliency and enhancing regional economic status as well. As part of the recent funding announced by New York Governor Kathy Hochul, the Town was awarded $1.96 million to replace the Phelps Lane culvert carrying the tributary to Carlls River in Suffolk County.

“This funding assists us in making the necessary additions to improve the safety, sustainability and reliability of

infrastructure,” said Town of Hempstead Supervisor Rich Schaffer. “Our daily interactions with our crucial infrastructure, especially bridges and culverts, allow us to often take their resiliency for granted. However, it is our significant and perpetual use of them that makes the maintenance and upgrades of our infrastructure paramount.”

The $1.96 million award given to the Town of Babylon was part of $516 million in enhanced assistance allocated to 141 local governments by BRIDGE NY. Long Island received the most funding of any New York region, totaling $73.5 million. Over 140 bridges and culverts in New York State will be enhanced to better withstand extreme weather and boost safety.

Local governments will be supported throughout the entire process of their infrastructure improvements, from design to right-of-way acquisition to construction.

Prior to this recent designation of funding, the BRIDGE NY initiative distributed more than $716 million to local governments. The capital plan adopted by the State last year committed $1 billion to BRIDGE NY, almost doubling the size of the program.

West Babylon STEM Lesson Works To Withstand The Elements

STEM LESSON WORKS TO WITHSTAND THE ELEMENTS - On July 13, students in the West Babylon School District’s summer elementary program engaged in a STEM learning activity. The students in Ms. Cacciuttolo and Ms. Santorelli classes joined together for a buddy STEM lesson to create a tent that could withstand the elements. Students created a blueprint of how they were going to build the tent out of different materials provided before getting to work on their creations. Senator Monica R. Martinez Announces Over $800,000 In Tech Security Funding For North Babylon Schools

Senator Monica R. Martinez announced that the North Babylon Union Free School District has been awarded a $838,149 grant that will finance new high technology security systems throughout the district’s properties. The grant stems from the Smart Schools Bond Act (SSBA) and is part of a recent $13.2 million distribution to school districts throughout New York State.

There are a lot of precautions homeowners can take to make sure their house is ready to combat the storms that come our way. The next aspect of your home you should check is your gutters. Make sure they are cleaned, and water is able to fill up and be diverted away from your house. Make sure that the downspouts to your gutters are pointed away from the foundation of your home and are clear for water to flow through easily. If gutters are not able to keep a constant flow of water away from your home the facia that the gutters are attached to will rot. This may cause your gutters to fall off your home, leaving your house vulnerable to leaks and cracks. Finally, make sure that all your windows and doors can lock & are airtight. Water should not be able to infiltrate through these openings. Make sure the soil around your window wells is loose and able to absorb water so no flooding can occur. Town Of Babylon And Wounded Warrior Project Join Forces For 16th

On Friday, July 14, 2023, the Town of Babylon, in partnership with Wounded Warrior Project, honored and participated with wounded U.S. military veterans in the Town’s 16th annual Soldier Ride. The event was inaugurated with a 9:00 AM ceremony featuring remarks from Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer, Wounded Warrior Danielle Green and

other esteemed guests.

Hundreds of eager participants rode their bikes alongside wounded U.S. military veterans on the 25mile route from Babylon Town Hall to Overlook Beach and raise money for veterans service organizations.

After participants crossed the finish line, U.S. military veterans, their families and friends celebrated the completion of the ride with

a participation barbeque at Overlook Beach for the warriors and riders.

This is the 20th anniversary of Soldier Ride, and the Town of Babylon’s 16th annual event. Soldier Ride brings together the brave men and women who serve our country with local communities to form meaningful connections and raise money and awareness to aid veterans through their

recovery process. 40 warriors participated in this year’s Soldier Ride. Thirty warriors are Wounded Warriors, five warriors are from the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, and five warriors are from Blesma, the Limbless Veterans, in Great Britain. Throughout their 16 Soldier Rides, the Town of Babylon has raised over $1.5 million for Wounded

Warrior Project. Over 1,000 registered riders were expected for this year’s event, and the $50,000 fundraising goal has already been surpassed. The amount raised is up to $140,000 with donations still coming in. Proceeds of this year’s event will benefit Wounded Warrior Project and the Association for Mental Health and Wellness, a Hauppauge-

based organization with a nationally-lauded peer-topeer veteran mental health approach. For each of the Soldier Rides of the past several years, the Town of Babylon and Wounded Warrior Project have agreed for part of the proceeds to be donated to a Suffolk County veterans service organization in need, rotating to help a new group each year.

New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation is pleased to announce the 2023 Sandcastle Contest at Hither Hills State Park. The contest will be held each Thursday through August 31, 2023. Sand

sculptors may use sand, water, and any other natural materials native to the beach.

Prizes are provided by the Natural Heritage Trust, the program’s sponsor. Each week’s prizes will be awarded for the best

sculptors and castles in several categories.

Registration is held each Thursday 9:30AM at Hither Hills State Park Visitors Center. A $10.00 Vehicle Use Fee will be in effect.
