Located in Southaven County Park in Brookhaven (between exits 57 & 58 off Route 27) is the home of Long Island Live Steamers, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. They operate for the education and enjoyment of the public, and to preserve the history and wonderment of the glory days of railroading. All of their members are volunteers and very few of them are professional machinists, most of them are hobbyists. The uniting interest for them lies in steam power, railroad and having fun!

Although thousands of visitors enjoy visiting and riding on their railroad every year, most Long Islanders have either never heard of this organizaiton, or if they have, have yet to visit them on one of their Public Run Days. Long Island Live Steamers may well be the best kept secret on Long Island. Suffolk Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Huntington Station) would like to thank local residents who came to his office to generously donate pet food, toys and other supplies for pet owners in need, helping to make the 10th Annual Suffolk County Legislative Pet Food Drive a sweeping success. Legislator Donnelly opened his district office in Huntington Station as a drop-off location for the Pet Food Drive to benefit Baxter’s Pet Pantry of Long Island Cares (www. licares.org) from February through May of this year, collecting pet food and supplies for families in
need. LI Cares founded Baxter’s Pet Pantry in 2009 after hearing about families who were unable to afford pet food, veterinary care and/or other services and were sadly faced with no other choice but to put their pets up for adoption. Baxter’s Pet Pantry also provides toys, pet clothes, feeding bowls, cat litter and other pet supplies, all of which were donated through this drive. “Families should never have to decide between feeding themselves and feeding their cherished pets,” said Legislator Donnelly. “I salute everyone at Long Island Cares for all they do, and
was happy to have this opportunity to help them continue to help pet owners. I am so grateful to our generous neighbors for their care and kindness,” said Legislator Donnelly. Legislator Donnelly’s office will continue to accept donations of pet food. While 5 and 10 pound bags of dog and cat food, canned food, kitty litter and new pet toys are most needed, all pet nourishments are welcome including food for hamsters, fish, birds and ferrets. Is It Safe To Donate Blood During The Pandemic? Donating blood is a selfless act that saves lives. Blood donors may recognize the vital role they play in patient care, but many may wonder if it’s safe to donate blood during
the pandemic. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, it is safe for anyone who is well to donate blood. That even goes for people who are social distancing due
to COVID-19. The CDC has recommended various safety measures to ensure the safety of donors and donation center volunteers and staff members. Such measures include spacing
donor chairs at least six feet apart and encouraging donors to make donation appointments ahead of time. Appointments can ensure donors are not spending more time at the donation
center than is absolutely necessary, reducing the likelihood that they have contact with someone who may have COVID-19 but not know it. The Red Cross notes it has instituted
additional safety protocols, such as laundering blankets used by donors after each use and requiring all donors and staff to wear face coverings or masks during the donation process.
