Babylon IDA’s Economic Inclusion Initiative Is Proof Of Progress Program Supporting MWBEs With Training And Resources Sets Example For The State expand this program locally while regions throughout the state can launch similar programs so we can really make some progress on this front statewide.”

Since its launch in the fall of 2020, the initiative has guided the development of nearly 30 aspiring or existing business owners who were looking for direction amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

From a financial perspective, the program has helped business owners secure nointerest loans while also improving access to capital by creating supporting crowdfunding and micro-lending. Technical assistance has also been provided to address sales and profit deficiencies, closure rates and other barriers to business growth while overseeing partnerships with foundations and universities to provide capacity building.

Additionally, the initiative has helped many business owners acquire MWBE certification by providing assistance in acquiring necessary certification and bonding while also promoting partnerships between Town and minority consultants, contractors,

A cornerstone of the effort was the Storefront Development Pilot Program, seeking to improve occupancy rates in underutilized business districts while also providing small business owners with affordable space needed to advance their businesses. Two local entrepreneurs have already taken advantage of this program and both have seen an increase in revenue, sales and hiring. There are two more businesses going through the process to take advantage of the successful pilot program.

“The Economic Inclusion Initiative is a crucial initiative to bridge the gap between an entrepreneur’s vision, implementation and sustained success,” said

NAACP LI Regional Director Tracey Edwards.

“The program aims to remove all obstacles, close the revenue gap, and create more paths of entrepreneurship through innovation and partnership. What the Babylon IDA has launched is an effective model of a community-driven strategy that should be used across New York State.”

Contributing greatly to this development has been an ongoing series of educational events and training resources for business owners. This fall, the initiative will host a bootcamp series focusing on business development and social media marketing.

There are also numerous B2B Minority, Women and Veteran networking event series being planned to help entrepreneurs make the business connections that can support and elevate their businesses. I am confident that additional funding for the Economic Inclusion Initiative will open up doors for other economic development agencies within the state to launch similar programs.”

The tremendous success of the IDA’s Economic Inclusion Initiative has helped it set a new standard of what IDAs throughout New York State can do to ensure that minority, women and veteran business owners are able to thrive in our state. The Babylon IDA is hopeful and encouraged that two other IDA’s in the state have reached out to learn more about replicating this program in their region.

“If we can make this program a statewide staple, its potential for not only helping improve the economy, but the lives of so many new and existing business owners is limitless,” said Matt McDonough, Special Counsel to the Babylon IDA. “We encourage our counterparts in IDAs throughout the state as well as the state legislature to make this issue a priority.

We’ve found success with it here in Babylon, and there is no reason why others can’t do so either.”

In the two years since the Babylon Industrial Development Agency (IDA) launched its Economic Inclusion Initiative during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, the effort has grown into a model of success for others to follow.

The program, which is aimed at supporting and elevating Minority, Women and Veteran Business Enterprise entrepreneurs within the Town of Babylon, has helped dozens of dedicated entrepreneurs connect to financial, technical and legal assistance, with many starting new businesses or getting MWBE certified in the process.

“The purpose of this effort was to focus on entrepreneurs within the Town that were primed for success but didn’t have all the tools or resources to do so,” said Tom Dolan, CEO of the Babylon IDA. “Helping to fill these common gaps, which are hurdles to success, was our main objective and with the results we have seen from this program’s infancy tell us we are onto something revolutionary. It is our hope that with some additional funding, we can

As the opening bars of Edward Elgar’s “Pomp and Circumstance” sounded, members of the North Babylon High School Class of 2022 stepped onto the athletic field to cheers of congratulations from proud family and friends.

Happily donning their Bulldog blue and white cap and gowns, the students prepared to take part in the annual commencement ceremony signifying their successful completion of high school.

Prior to the presentation of the diplomas, valedictorian Justine Borgia, salutatorian Tyler Hovanec, senior class president Tyanne Tanor, Superintendent of Schools

Following more than two years of unprecedented challenges, the theme of the evening was ‘happiness.’ In his remarks, Dr. Klomp took inspiration from the doctor of positive psychology, Dr. Martin E.P. Seligman. “Happiness has three elements – the pleasant life, the good

Through his words, he encouraged the students to mindfully explore happiness as they entered the world post-North Babylon High School.

Continuing with the theme, Mr. Eschbach shared a short poem with the class. “Class of 2022, I wish you a world of happiness; take pride in all that you do and stay true to yourself.”

Following the conferring of diplomas, the North Babylon School Class of 2022 tossed their caps and celebrated the end of an era with family and friends.

THEATER CLASS DELIVERS IMPORTANT LESSONS - Babylon Junior-Senior High School’s theater class visited Babylon Elementary School second graders to perform condensed fairytales of good morals, anti-bullying, self-love and kindness.

The theater class wrote, produced, directed and performed the material under the guidance of their teacher Mr. Storey. They even built their own set pieces and props.

Angela’s House, located in Hauppauge, is one of those seven nonprofits they oversee. This organization was created to offer families and professionals an agency to call to help medically frail children and their families. Angela’s House has helped to simplify home care options for families by coordinating the extensive array of services needed to support medically frail children at home.

“We have worked very hard to create new programs and opportunities for medically frail children,” said founder Bob Policastro, who opened the first home in East Moriches in 2000, and named after his daughter, who suffered severe brain damage during birth. “Over the years we’ve received tremendous support from Assemblyman Harvey Weisenberg, and have worked in collaboration with IGHL, Independent Group Home Living, to provide these services. We now operate more than 50 homes, multiple day programs and many other supportive programs for individual with intellectual disabilities.”

Another affiliate of the Kinexion network is East End Disability Associates (EEDA) in Riverhead, which also provides support and services for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. This organization formed in 1992 by a small group of parents who were active advocates for their children and believed that everyone has the right to

fully participate in quality education, medical, habilitation and recreational services for more than 750 people.

Rounding out the seven affiliates of Kinexion is Maryhaven, whose vision is to foster a community whereby people with special needs are safe, accepted and supported. This nonprofit offers a full range of services, including residential, day habilitation and vocational training to promote independence, individuality, integration and social connections.

“Our 29 Community Residential homes offer a warm and secure environment where people with special needs can live comfortably,” said Charles Vanek, III, Executive Director of Maryhaven. “Additionally, our Day Habilitation program and our Integrated Business Center provide the platform to attain personal growth and the highest quality of life by teaching daily living skills and offering them community integration opportunities as well as an environment whereby individuals with disabilities work alongside non-disabled workers.”

Taylor’s Hope Foundation is a non-profit organization that was formed in 2015 in honor of Taylor Ryan, who has been undergoing chemotherapy on and off since 2010 for treatment of a rare cancer, NeuroDegenerative Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis. For her parents, it was important to provide support to children who are battling an illness, while raising awareness and funds to help further research. Keeping kids smiling and supporting them and their family during one of the most challenging times in their lives is a goal that is especially important to them. “It is important that we show them people genuinely care, understand and want to help in any way possible,” said Teresa Ryan, Taylor’s mom.

Jovia Financial Credit Union July 4th Fireworks Spectacular Delighted Thousands The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation – Long Island Region would like to thank Jovia Financial Credit Union for their title sponsorship of the Annual July 4th Fireworks Spectacular at Jones Beach State Park.

The Jovia Financial Credit Union Fireworks Spectacular at Jones Beach delighted over 153,000 visitors from across Long Island and the Tristate area. The 25-minute dazzling fireworks display was made possible through the support of Jovia Financial Credit Union as well as Connoisseur Media Long Island, Natural Heritage Trust, Foundation for Long Island State Parks Inc., Newsday, Captree Boatman’s Association, and J & B Restaurant Partners.

The fireworks display was synchronized to a soundtrack that was heard throughout Jones Beach, as well as on the Connoisseur Media Radio Stations WALK 97.5 or KJOY 98.3. The soundtrack included a variety of patriotic and modern songs. The National Anthem (Whitney Houston) kicked off the display followed

by America (Neil Diamond), Firework (Katie Perry), As It Was (Harry Styles), God Bless The USA (Lee Greenwood), Dynamite (BTS), Cold Heart (Elton John/ Dua Lipa), It’s America (Rodney Atkins), Blinding Lights (The Weekend), Star Wars (John Williams), Our Country

(Mellencamp), Good For Your (Olivia Rodrigo), Party in the USA (Miley Cyrus), and America The Beautiful (Whitney Houston).

The finale illumined the skies while Stars and Stripes (Sousa) played.
