ollowing four years, 728 school days, 5,096 school hours and 305,760 school minutes, the 402 members of the North Babylon High School Class of 2013 gathered together one final time as a class on June 22nd to celebrate the school’s annual commencement exercises. Members of the Board of Education, administration, teachers, special guests, parents and friends were on hand for the special occasion.

West Babylon Union Free School District’s Class of 2013 took their final steps onto the West Babylon Junior High School field as students of the district at the district’s annual commencement ceremony on June 22nd. The students walked onto the field with their heads held high as their parents, family and peers cheered them on. The ceremony was laced with special performances by the high school’s symphonic and concert bands, as well as its concert choir, who performed
a “senior medley” that featured “You’ve Got a Friend in Me” and “I’ll Be There for You.” Class President Casey Walsh welcomed the graduates, paving the way for all of the ceremony’s speakers, among whom were Superintendent of Schools Anthony Cacciola, Board of Education President Diane Thiel, and Class of 2013 salutatorian Brian Phillips and valedictorian Wasiq Ahmad. The members of the Class of 2013 were then called to the podium to
receive their diplomas to the applause of their family and friends. After the final diploma was presented, students were instructed to move their tassels to the opposite sides of their caps. Once officially announced as graduates, these young adults celebrated by tossing their caps into the air. Following the recessional march, graduates reunited with their loved ones as official alumni of the West Babylon Union Free School District. The district wishes each of its graduates the best of luck.

Students in Lisa DeGennaro’s first-grade class at John F. Kennedy Elementary School in the West Babylon Union Free School District recently held an author’s tea for their parents. During the presentation, each of the young authors and illustrators of “DeGennaro’s Publishing House” took to the podium to read a personal poem about themselves and then shared with the audience a “chapter” from a book they had created in class. These projects demonstrated the students’ knowledge of the elements of a book, including a table of contents, chapters, a glossary, diagrams, bold words and a “fun facts” page. After their presentations, the students gave their poems and books to their parents. It was a wonderful opportunity for the firstgraders to demonstrate their literary growth throughout the year and their ability to speak at the podium.

Power To Learn Students of West Babylon Junior High School recently took part in a Cablevision Power To Learn program that focused on the effects of cyberbullying. Administrators, members of the Board of Education, representatives from Cablevision and Sen. Phil Boyle attended the Power To Learn presentation in which members of the school’s Mock Trial team and S.O.S.
(Stories of Substance) group performed skits that depicted scenes of cyberbullying, bringing a greater awareness of the problem to students and offering them ways to be “upstanders” as opposed to bystanders. “When we use the Internet, the world is limitless,” Sen. Boyle said in his address to the young audience. “We can discover things beyond our imagination, but there
is a true danger involved because what you put out there can hurt other people. I encourage you all to use the Internet for good and be mindful of your actions.”

The West Babylon Junior High School art department is pleased to congratulate the winners of the 2013 Babylon Citizens Council on the Arts Art Show. This was BACCA’s 24th annual art show competition, in which students were rewarded for
the work they produced in a myriad of media, including acrylics, watercolors, charcoal, pencil, pen and ink, oils, graphics and mixed media. Receiving awards in the grade 5-8 category were studio art students Camilla Lyczko, who placed third, Christina

Upon completing a study of community helpers and communities, a key component of the secondgrade social studies curriculum, the students selected a career that they felt represented their “dream job.” On June 11th, students, dressed in outfits representing their career choices, presented an overview of their chosen jobs based on the research and information they had gathered to an audience of their parents and grandparents, who likewise dressed in clothing depicting their own careers.

Assistant Principal Steven Goldberg, as well as a salute to the flag by Senior Class President Genevieve Gravina and Vice President Alex Malhas. Genevieve and Student Council President Carolanne Murphy offered reflective speeches to their classmates, while Principal Al Cirone and Mr. Goldberg offered words of praise for students’ successes and optimism for their future. Mr. Cirone advised students to always keep in mind that happiness is not measured by money, but by the passion one has for what they love. “I’m
smiling inside because you care; you give all of us hope that you’ll succeed and live up to your full potential,” he said. “Get out there. Join the world. Take action. Get in the game. Find your passion. Give back.” Mr. Goldberg emphasized that while graduates will continue to face new obstacles and challenges, he had confidence that they would meet such challenges head-on. “You are embarking on a new journey,” he said. “As you enter this new journey, you have the opportunity for new beginnings. students is a major change, but that change is a sign of growth and progress. “When you leave here today, you will be graduates of the Class of 2013,” he said. “That’s a huge change - one of the first big milestones of a very long and prosperous life.” Following speeches from students, administrators and educators, students took to the dais one by one to receive their diplomas. Several graduating students also joined their fellow musicians to perform a number of selections with the school’s chorus and band. The ceremony closed with the traditional release of white doves, symbolizing a hopeful future for the graduates, who marked their first moments as alumni by tossing their caps into the air.

In what made for a joyous and celebratory event, family members, friends and educators packed Babylon High School’s Coach Williams Memorial Field for the Class of 2013 commencement ceremony on June 22nd. Following members of the U.S. Navy Sea Cadet Color Guard, the American Celtic Pipe Band and high school administrators and teachers, soon-to-be graduates were aglow with smiles as they proceeded to their seats on the field. In the heat of summer, on the brink of the fourth of July, I can’t help but reflect upon that evening, two days prior to Halloween, when everything changed. Who knew that, as the last golden days of autumn drew to a close, a storm the likes of which few had ever seen would wreak such havoc – the kind that we, as residents of Long Island, are still attempting to recover and rebuild from over eight months later. how adverse conditions force us all to adjust our conception of what, exactly, is routine. What would have been unthinkable circumstances just a year ago has now become the “norm,” that revolving, whirlwind of chaos where each day brings new issues, and the finish line continues to stretch just a bit farther into the horizon. Mother Nature is an uncontrollable force, and clearly, one to be reckoned with and taken seriously. The best we can do is to prepare as much as possible, cross our fingers and hope for the best. ... And appreciate whatever sense of “normalcy” we have, while we still have it. They say you never truly appreciate what you have until it’s gone. Best to hold onto it for as long as you can. An array of emotions was evident during this year’s moving up ceremony for the sixth-grade class at Babylon Memorial Grade School. As the students entered the auditorium at Babylon Junior-Senior High School, they were excited to begin the next chapter in their educational journey but could not help reminiscing about the years spent at the Grade School. After a welcoming address from Principal Dr. Randee Bonagura, honored guest George Lynagh, a Suffolk County police officer, led the audience in a moving performance of The Star-Spangled Banner before several speakers imparted some words of advice onto the graduates. “Moving up day is a tradition,” Superintendent of Schools Richard Rozakis told the students. “Traditions are important because they remind us of where we came and who we are now, and help us feel confident as we move forward into the future.” Noting the students’
readiness to move up to the high school, he added, “Babylon is a unique and special school district. You have received an excellent foundation on which you will now build remarkable high school careers. Each and every one of you has your own special skills, talents and dreams. I am confident that your high school years will be productive, enjoyable and very, very successful. Let’s all work hard to make these dreams come true together.” In addition to the warm words of congratulations from Mr. Rozakis, the students listened attentively as two peers reflected on the memories they have made over the past three years and the dreams they collectively share for their futures. PTA President Heather Tenety also offered her praise. Members of the class performed a moving version of Natasha Bedingfield’s Unwritten that left everyone in the audience in awe. When his or her name
was called, each class member crossed the stage to shake the hands of the district administrators and Board of Education members in attendance and receive their moving up certificates. Before concluding the ceremony with the Grade School’s alma mater, Babylon Junior-Senior High School Principal Al Cirone and Assistant Principal Steven Goldberg welcomed the students to their new school.

Seashore Safari First-graders in Debbie LoSardo’s class at South Bay Elementary School in the West Babylon Union Free School District recently explored a variety of sea life during the Seashore Safari that took place in their classroom.
The hands-on lesson gave students the opportunity to use their five senses and interact with animals, allowing them to feel the pinchers of a horseshoe crab, hum to mud snails in an effort to coax them out of their shells, race sea
stars and let hermit crabs tickle their palms. The students also discussed several facts about their experiences and wrote stories about one of the animals they had observed based on what they had learned.
Writing Contest Winner Fourth-grade student Arpitha Vinod of Forest Avenue Elementary School in the West Babylon Union Free School District was recently selected as the second-place winner of the Gambone Writing Contest, sponsored by the Long Island Language Arts
Council. Arpitha was required to submit two writing pieces. The first was a thematic piece written in the genre of her choosing, governed by the designated theme “A Leader Is….” The second submission was her favorite piece of writing taken from
her own portfolio. She and her teacher, Tracey Germano, were honored at LILAC’s annual spring luncheon, where published poet Matt Pasca spoke to attendees. Arpitha was awarded a $50 gift card and a set of books.

Organized and hosted by the North Babylon Lions Club and Boy Scout Troop 399 to raise funds for scholarships and other valuable community programs, highlights included performances by the North Babylon High School cast of Hairspray, the Robert Moses Middle School marching
band, a barbershop quartet and local bands, as well as a 150-vendor street fair, classic cars on display, inflatable rides and delicious food offerings by local restaurants. “As a North Babylon resident, it’s wonderful to personally be able to share in the community pride of this great event,” said Legislator D’Amaro. “I thank all of the organizers, vendors and participants for making this such a special day!”

Marveling at their collective accomplishments and how much they had achieved since beginning their journey in the Babylon School District three years ago, Babylon Elementary School Principal Dana Basile congratulated this year’s second-grade students and wished them
the best of luck as they moved up to third grade during the building’s graduation ceremony. Before becoming official Babylon Memorial Grade School students, the young graduates marched into the elementary school’s gymnasium and proudly shook Ms. Basile’s hand as parents and family
members cheered from their seats. Under the direction of music teacher Colleen Angerami, the students then performed several musical selections, including two pieces that touched upon their time at Babylon Elementary and their preparedness to enter the grade school.
