I Trust You

I received a voicemail from someone this week who is thinking about selling her house. She’s lived in her home for many years and is a little nervous about the thought of leaving it. At the end of her message, she said something that made my day, and prompted me to write this article; she said, “Please give me a call back. I trust you.”

Hearing those three magical words puts this homeowner immediately into my “Friends and Family” book. I never want to lose someone’s trust in me. It is the highest compliment I can receive from someone else, professionally, or personally. Trust is often the difference between winning and losing in business. It takes time to build, but it can be lost in an instant.

There are five simple ways to build trust every day:

1) Be open and honest. If you are, people will be more likely to trust you.

2) Follow through on your promises. If you say you will do something, make sure you do it.

3) Listen. When you listen, others will feel like they’ve been heard

4) Be respectful. If you respect people, they are more likely to trust you.

5) Be consistent. When you are consistent, people will know what to expect from you, and they will be more likely to trust you. As hard as it is to build trust, I have seen people lose it in a second. The easiest and quickest ways to break someone’s trust in you are lying, break your promise, ignore someone, be disrespectful, and be inconsistent. Once you lose trust, it’s almost impossible to get it back.

Regardless of the type of business you are in or the role you play in the company, the path to your success will be paved, repeatedly, by three simple words: I Trust You.

Town Of Babylon Event Supports Small Business Opportunities And Networking

Town of Babylon Councilman and Small Business Committee

Chairman Anthony Manetta, in conjunction with the Town of Babylon Chamber of Commerce Collaborative and Town of Babylon Industrial Development Agency (IDA), recently hosted the second annual Access to Capital event for business owners and residents. The event, held at the Town of Babylon Old Town Hall, educated attendees on available incentives and funding and grant opportunities and provided networking opportunities with fellow business owners and local chambers of commerce.

“The Town of Babylon is steadfast in our support for our small businesses,” said Councilman Manetta. “As a councilman, I have the incredible opportunity to spend a great deal of my time helping small businesses and work closely with our chambers of commerce. Events like this provide the

tools and resources for our small businesses to grow locally.”

The event began with a panel featuring CEO of the Babylon IDA Tom Dolan, Vice President and Regional Director of Long Island Empire State Development Cara Longworth and New York Deputy District Director of the United States Small Business Administration John Mallano. Councilman Manetta moderated as the panelists fielded questions from the wide range of business owners and residents in attendance.

The Town of Babylon has launched several other recent programs and events as part of their initiative to support local small businesses. This includes the Chamber of Commerce Collaborative, also led by Councilman Manetta. The collaborative brings together the Town of Babylon’s chambers to hold joint events and programming to enhance small business

growth and networking opportunities. Another part of this Town initiative is the Direct Support Program, which distributed 267 grants from American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funding to help

small businesses, nonprofit organizations and veterans groups economically recover from the pandemic and experience post-pandemic growth.

“We provided millions of

dollars in grant money to help the small businesses and nonprofits affected by the COVID pandemic,” said Councilman Manetta at the Access to Capital event. “It was our goal to ensure the

ARPA funds we received were distributed to our biggest job creators—our small businesses—who deeply support our residents and drive the local economy.”

Babylon Citizens Council on the Arts, Inc. announced a grant award totaling $50,000 from the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA) to support the organization’s addition of a new theatrical lighting system at the multi-use BACCA Arts Center in Lindenhurst, NY. This grant is part of a record capital project funding announcement by NYSCA, which totals over $42 million to 144 capital projects across New York State.

BACCA’s Arts Center hosts and provides support for musical performances, productions by community theatre groups, art exhibitions, and other events, and

Pinelawn Memorial Park And Arboretum Announces 2023 Event Schedule

Pinelawn Memorial Park and Arboretum, known for its exceptionally beautiful grounds, unique architectural monuments, flowing bronze fountains and world-class arboreta, announces its 2023 event schedule.

Included in the calendar are the park’s many educational outdoor programs that celebrate the importance of various beloved insect species including ladybugs and honey bees, and the vital role they play in the environment.

For the first time, Pinelawn will also host Jazz Under the Stars honoring some of the great jazz musicians who are resting peacefully at Pinelawn, including John Coltrane, Count Basie, Lloyd Trotman, Guy Lombardo and The Royal Canadians.

Pinelawn’s Arboretum, which was awarded Level II status from the International Arboretum Accreditation Program, ArbNet, is comprised of three distinct collections including the Noteworthy

Collection, the Primary Collection and the General Collection. The Noteworthy Collection includes the Arboretum’s highest quality and most historically significant stately and mature specimens, including 10 of its highest priority and valued trees. The Weeping Beech, its oldest tree at over 120 years old, has a crown size spread of 74 feet with its enormous, shapely mound of sweeping, pendulous branches and hanging branchlets.

Pinelawn’s Weeping Beech is considered priceless.

Pinelawn’s Nikko Maple, its rarest, is a species which originated in the high mountains of Japan and its Katsura features heart-shaped leaves which in the Spring, emerge as purple. Pinelawn has multiple large Katsura trees situated in one location, which is rather uncommon.

Pinelawn’s appreciation of history can be seen in the many historical monuments featured within the park, including the Statue of Normandie

and the Garden of Freedom’s Jefferson colonnade, which is inscribed with an excerpt from the Declaration of Independence and its signers in gold leaf. The Garden of Normandie is home to the Statue of Peace, one of the largest bronze statues ever cast in modern times. The refurbished, softly glowing, ton-and-a-half bronze establishes the serene mood of the garden.

Another significant piece on the property is the John Donne Memorial which was the first monument created for Pinelawn by designer, Ismar David in 1965, who then went onto design much of Pinelawn’s park area, helping to create the beauty that Pinelawn is known for today. The Fountain of Peace, which is set within an 11-acre garden, was also designed in part by Ismar David, and resides among eight stately 40-foot tall Georgia Marble columns, discovered in Atlanta by Pinelawn where they adorned the Federal Reserve Bank for decades.

Twenty-six North Babylon High School students were recognized as recipients of the New York State Seal of Civic Readiness in a ceremony at the Lee Tatti auditorium at North Babylon High School on June 5.

The students made up the first cohort of participants in the social studies department’s effort to raise civic awareness within the student body toward issues that speak to students on a personal note. Ideas presented in this year’s group included the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, climate change, poverty in El Salvador, ocean pollution, animal welfare and many more. The students first presented their ideas in the cafeteria to their fellow honorees and families in an interactive presentation before being recognized in the auditorium by their peers and members of the board of education, as well as Superintendent of School Dr. Kenneth Graham and Deputy Superintendent Kimberly Skillen.

“This is an honor and a true testament to your dedication and your hard work,” said Eliot Lewin, director of the social studies department at the high school. “You’ve set an example for your peers, and we hope that you will inspire others to follow in your footsteps.”

Each of the students received a certificate of recognition as well as a special cord to wear during graduation. In addition, the diplomas for these students will be adorned with the Seal of Civic Readiness as a recognition for this honor.

America’s VetDogs is a non-profit organization, headquartered in Smithtown. They train and provide service and guide dogs for veterans, activeduty military and first responders with disabilities.

This year they placed their 1000th service dog and reduced the waiting time to receive one from 2-3 years to 9-12 months. Long Island resident Nathan Gardner is one of many veterans who have benefited greatly from America’s VetDogs and he’s eager to share his experience in hopes that it inspire others whose lives could be changed with the help of a special canine friend.

Some years ago, Nathan, who comes from a family with a strong military background, got in a car accident. He was left without reliable transportation, which left him frustrated. He was faced with a lot of down time and eventually decided to visit a recruiting o ce in his spare time. “I walked into the Air Force recruitment o ce, because I knew I liked what they could o er me.” He soon joined and became part of the Air Force Security Forces. “I actually ended up loving the job, loving the career. I was very happy with it.”

He served for 5 years, primarily working in nuclear weapons security, where he was required to wear full battle gear. This included a plated vest, all his equipment, two weapons, a bag full of gear and ammunition. “The weight of everything I was carrying ended up taking a toll on me.” He later found out he had a herniated disc, which has worsened since he left the service. Eventually, he developed two herniated discs, sciatic nerve damage and an atrophied calf muscle, which led to ankle problems.

Nathan learned of America’s VetDogs through the Veterans Resource Center at Su olk County Community College. “A lot of the things I was reading in the brochure matched what I was looking for and what I needed,” he said. “I wish I knew about the program sooner.”

Nathan reached out to America’s VetDogs

and was able to be placed with a service dog at no cost. He met and trained with his service dog, Kenzo, in February of 2022.

“It had gotten to the point where I would lock up, fall to the ground and not be able to move,” he explained. “So Kenzo has been trained to get me help. Training with him has been a life-changing experience. He has taught me how to handle myself and my disability appropriately and I really like how my mindset has shifted into a more positive place.”

Nathan has been able to flourish in ways he never could without a service dog. He recently graduated from St. Joseph’s University and will begin pursuing an MBA this fall. He has served as Vice President of the Long Island Campus Chapter of the Student Veterans of America and has new self confidence that he couldn’t imagine having years ago.

“Accomplishing these things means a lot to me in terms of what my future can now look like,” said Gardner, who attended his recent college graduation ceremony with Kenzo, his service dog. “I’m the first person in my family to get an undergraduate degree and I’m pursuing my graduate degree. I’m very proud of that. Getting Kenzo has been one of the best things for me.”

The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Program is offering a free guided art adventure for breast cancer patients, survivors and caregivers to light their creative sparks by making art through a variety of different techniques and mediums. The inperson workshop will be held on Tuesday, July

“Participants are encouraged to experiment with art and trust their imaginations,” says Kimberly Newman, BFA, the Marketing and Communications Coordinator, for the

Adelphi Breast Cancer Program, who will be offering a variety of different techniques and mediums during this forum.

Co-facilitating is social worker Angela M. Papalia, LMSW, Assistant Director, Adelphi Breast Cancer Program who says that learning and practicing

different breathing exercises will be part of the session. “These exercises will teach you how to disengage from distracting thoughts and sensations,” she says. Breathing exercises have many health benefits such as improving immunity, calming down anxiety, increasing sleep quality, improving
