Belmont’s Battleship Bot Challenge

- Students at Belmont Elementary School in the North Babylon School District tried their hand at a reimagined and updated version of the classic boardgame Battleship. During a Makerspace lesson on June 7 with library media specialist Jennifer Olsen, students worked in teams for the Battleship Robot Challenge. Using their small robots – BlueBots and Dash – students worked together to code their bots to move across the board to the different squares and sink their opponents’ battleships. North Babylon Math Marvels Excel

The Math Marvels Math Club from North Babylon School District recently participated in the Suffolk County Math Competition. This annual event saw the involvement of 18 districts, 40 schools, 71 teams and a total of 355 students, providing a significant opportunity for young mathematicians to showcase their talents and engage in friendly competition.

Students from fourth, fifth and sixth grades in the Math Marvels Math Club represented

North Babylon with enthusiasm and determination. The virtual competition was a valuable experience for these young learners, allowing them to challenge themselves and develop their mathematical skills in a supportive and dynamic environment.

Sixth grader Oliver Ramirez placed ninth out of 70 sixth graders, which was decided in a tiebreaker round. Additionally, the sixth grade blue team – consisting of Emmanuel Ibrahim, Shaurya

Jain, Hazeem Lawal, Logan Leonardo and Ryan McNamara – secured sixth place.

“We are excited about the growth and learning opportunities that events like the Suffolk County Math Competition provide for our students,” said Amy Michalopoulos, mathematics director at North Babylon School District. “It’s inspiring to see our students step up to these challenges. The students had a great time working in teams and problem-solving.”

Plants As Long-Term Investments?

Though plants might not seem like the first thing individuals think of when they ponder long-term investments, perennials can be just that. The home and garden experts at HGTV note that some perennials can live for a very long time. For example, according to HGTV, the colorful flowering plant peony, despite a blooming season that usually lasts just seven to 10 days, has been known to survive

for 70 to 100 years. Hostas are another popular perennial because they require little maintenance, and that extra free time can add up over the course of the hosta's life, which can exceed 15 years. Long-living perennials are not necessarily unusual, but gardeners should know that many perennials, and påarticularly those characterized as "short-lived," tend to live around three years.

Free Senior Medical ID Card Program

New York State Assemblyman Michael Durso (R – Massapequa Park), in partnership with the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office, is holding a FREE Senior Medical ID Card program on Wednesday, June 26th from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the

West Babylon Public Library, 211 NY-109 West Babylon. The program is free and open to Suffolk County residents 50 years old and older.

The Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office Medical ID Cards assist seniors or those with medical

needs to keep all required medical information available on a small card with them at all times in case of an emergency. For more information, please contact Assemblyman Durso’s district office at (516) 541-4598.
