Town Of Babylon Proclaims May As Jewish Heritage Month

The Town of Babylon recently issued a proclamation to declare May as Jewish Heritage Month. Deborah Peretz, the Northeast Regional Director of IsraelLINK at StandWithUs, attended the recent Town Board meeting and accepted the proclamation on the organization’s behalf.

“Judaism has such an important role not just across the Town of Babylon but throughout the country and world as well,” said Town of Babylon Councilman Anthony Manetta. “It is crucial that we continue to enhance the inclusivity of our diverse community. My wife and her family are Jewish,

and when you witness the amount of antisemitism occurring in the world, you recognize the need for impactful action.”

The recognition of May as Jewish Heritage Month is one step in the Town of Babylon’s plans to enhance the comfortability, safety and celebration of Long Island’s Jewish

population. The Town is also partnering with organizations championing Jewish identity and combating antisemitism, such as StandWithUs. As an international, non-partisan education organization that supports Israel and fights antisemitism, StandWithUs is working with the Town on awareness initiatives.

“As you know, antisemitism is on the rise,” said Deborah Peretz, who leads the educational branch of StandWithUs Northeast. “The best way to ensure our children have a safe future is through education, so thank you to the Town of Babylon for taking this important step.”

“We are proud to have

a significant Jewish population and to partner with Jewish groups on important campaigns, especially combating antisemitism,” said Councilman Manetta. “As public officials, it is our role to make sure everyone knows bigotry is not tolerated and the Jewish community is welcome.”

The Charity of the Month for May is LI Music & Entertainment Hall of Fame

The Long Island Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame (LIMEHOF) is a 501(c) (3) organization dedicated to the idea that Long Island’s musical heritage is an important resource to be celebrated and preserved for future generations. The organization was created as a place of community that inspires and explores Long Island music in all its forms. They have proudly inducted over 120 music artists and related professionals who are recognized at their beautiful new Stony Brook location.

Music Education plays a significant role in the lives of many. In addition to granting thousands of dollars in music scholarships to individuals each year, LIMEOF goes above and beyond to keep the love of music alive and well for students. One of the ways they do so is through aligning with the TeachRock program.

Launched by Stevie Van Zandt and the Founders Board of Bono, Jackson Browne, Martin Scorsese and Bruce Springsteen, this program provides free, standards-aligned resources that use music to help K-12 students succeed in science, math, social studies, language arts and more. Nearly 60,000 educators representing all 50 states are registered at Teachrock.org. The program aspires to:

•Keep the arts in the DNA of school systems

•Empower teachers with a methodology to engage young students

•Create inclusive spaces through the arts by providing teachers well researched, abundanceframed classroom resources featuring positive representations of all Americans

•Increase graduation rates

On Sunday, July 23rd at 7:30PM, a concert featuring Pat Benetar, Neil Giraldo and Taylor Dayne will be held at the Catholic Health Amphitheater at Bald Hill. The show will benefit the Long Island Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame, so everyone who buys a ticket will help support their mission.

Summertime Could Be Employment Time For Qualifying Suffolk County Youths

Qualifying Suffolk County residents between the ages of 14 and 20 may be able to secure summer employment through the 2023 Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF)-funded Summer Work Experience Program, according to Suffolk Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Deer Park) who is making applications available through his district office in Huntington Station.

“This program, offered through the Suffolk County Department of Labor, is a wonderful way for County youths to take advantage of their time off from school to earn money to help with their personal or family expenses,” Legislator Donnelly said. Deadline to apply is June 23, 2023 with the program scheduled to begin on Tuesday, July 3, 2023 and run for seven weeks through Friday, August 18, 2023. Qualifying program participants will be paid $15 per hour and may work up to 25 hours each week. Besides the age qualifications, applicants must meet United States residency requirements and the gross annual income of the participant’s family must not exceed:

• $29,160 for a family of one

• $39,440 for a family of two

• $49,720 for a family of three

• $60,000 for a family of four

• $70,280 for a family of five

• $80,560 for a family of six

• For family units of more than six, add $10,120 for each additional family member

Youth applicants automatically qualify for the program if they are receiving:

Food Stamps, Public Assistance, Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP), Social Security Income (SSI), or Medicaid. If you do not meet the income guidelines and do not receive any of the benefits listed, your application will still be considered based on availability of additional funding.

Suffolk Awarded $2 Million Navy Workforce Training Grant To Support Submarine Operations

The United States Navy’s Submarine Industrial Base has awarded Suffolk County Community College’s Advanced Manufacturing and Workforce Development program $2 million over five years to recruit and train the next generation of welders and Computer Numerical Control (CNC) Machine operators in

support of the mission of one Columbia Class and two Virginia Class submarines.

The submarine industrial base is the United States’ unique and highly specialized workforce and manufacturing base which supports the skills and technology needed to design, build, repair and

provide support for the Navy’s submarines. The Navy said there are five industrial base pipelines in the United States and estimates more than 130,000 new workforce personnel program-wide will be needed between now and 2030 to fulfill its mission. Long Island is home to one of the densest pockets of manufacturers

for the program.

The $2 million in scholarships will cover the full tuition of 100 students per year -- a total of 250 welders and 250 CNC Machine Operators over the five-year life of the program -- that will help local employers in the defense manufacturing pipeline fill a growing need for skilled workers,

according to Suffolk County Community College President Dr. Edward Bonahue, who said the program will launch in the fall of this year.

“This investment in our welding and manufacturing certificates will allow us to get more trainees into the workforce more quickly,”

Bonahue said. “The need for highly trained technicians in the defense manufacturing pipeline is a national priority, and we’re proud that the Navy and the Submarine Industrial Base recognize the critical role Suffolk’s workforce programs play in meeting that need,” Bonahue said.

West Babylon Team Takes Second In Kite Festival

WEST BABYLON TEAM TAKES SECOND IN KITE FESTIVAL - On April 29, three teams representing West Babylon High School competed at the third annual Kite Festival at Cedar Beach. Schools from the township of Babylon, including Copiague, Wyandanch and West Babylon, competed in the annual kite festival by creating and flying their own kites. This competition included grades K-12, divided into three divisions: elementary, middle and high school. Despite some damage taken by endless practice flights, one of the West Babylon High School teams placed second in the high school division. This event is co-sponsored by the North Babylon Chamber of Commerce and the Town of Babylon.
