An Elevated Risk

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, some medical conditions can put people at an elevated risk for certain infections. Heart disease, diabetes mellitus type 1 or 2, chronic lung disease, including COPD, and kidney failure are among the conditions that can increase a person’s risk for certain infections. The CDC notes the importance of recognizing this potential connection, as such a recognition can help

people understand the role vaccines can play in promoting their overall health. It’s also vital that men and women realize the connection between their lifestyle choices and their risk for certain infections. For example, excessive consumption of alcohol and smoking are two controllable risk factors that can elevate a person’s risk for infection. Long Island (RTLI) is a nonprofit organization, headquartered in Farmingdale, serving Nassau County and most of Su olk County. As an a liate of the national organization, Rebuilding Together, their mission is repairing homes, revitalizing communities and rebuilding lives.

To accomplish their vision of safe and healthy homes for everyone, they provide free essential home safety repairs and modifications for economicallydisadvantaged homeowners, whether they are older adults, veterans, families or persons with a disability or limited mobility.

The beneficiaries of RTLI’s work, lowincome homeowners struggling to get by, are so appreciative of the repairs and modifications that this organization does to keep them safe and improve their quality of life. “I was desperate,” said a widow of a Navy veteran who welcomed RTLI’s helping hand. “Now I have so much less stress and a more comfortable and safer house.”

Another recent client said, “Thank you for treating my home like it was yours. You all showed professionalism, caring and impeccable workmanship. You made my home more livable and safer. You are doing a beautiful thing and should be very proud.” These words lift the spirits of the hardworking RTLI volunteers.

COUNCILMAN MANETTA’S EASTER CANDY DRIVE - “Babylon Town Councilman Anthony Manetta’s second annual Easter Candy Collection Drive was a success with hundreds of donations received from community groups and generous individuals from across Babylon Town. A special thank you to the West Babylon Lions Club and the Gerald J. Ryan Outreach Center of Wyandanch for their generous donations to the drive. And thank you to Village of Lindenhurst Mayor Michael Lavorata for helping Councilman Manetta make his final donation of Easter candy to the St. Vincent de Paul food pantry at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Lindenhurst.”

Their small o ce in Farmingdale has only one employee, so their volunteers are really a significant part of what they do. “Our volunteers are the heart and soul of our organization,” said Stella Hendrickson, President of RTLI. “Almost all are retired. They give their time, their talents, their expertise and their hearts

to those who need a helping hand.”

The volunteer teams work tirelessly to help our neighbors, traveling throughout Long Island, using their own cars and tools. They come from all walks of life and professions, from teachers to principals, business owners, social workers, administrative assistants, accountants and truck drivers. The list goes on and on, but they all have one thing in common; their commitment to do the right thing, give back, lend a hand and be there for someone in need.

Here are ways you can get involved:

•If you know someone who may benefit from their services, have them call the RTLI o ce at 631.777.7894, Monday – Friday, to see if they qualify for the free program.

•Join the RTLI team! Volunteers can sign up at rebuildingtogetherli.org/ volunteer-today. Currently they are looking for individuals who are fluent in Spanish and for an o ce person, particularly if they are familiar with Salesforce. Additionally, if you are handy with tools, the Nassau and Su olk crew teams are always looking for more help.

•Donate at rebuildingtogetherli. org. RTLI relies on the donations of our neighbors, some grants and corporate sponsorships, as they do not receive any government funding.

•RTLI encourages local business to get involved and sponsor a project. The organization can find the right project for your business to sponsor and you can then promote your generosity on social media to show your commitment to improving the health and safety of someone in need locally.

When we work together, we can bring about transformational change quickly in our communities.

Lions Club Donation Helps North Babylon Schools’ Outreach Programs

NORTH BABYLON LIONS CLUB - Members of the North Babylon Lions Club presented a donation to the North Babylon School District prior to the April 20 board of education meeting. Robert Moses Middle School teacher Tracy Jacquemain reached out to the club earlier this year, asking for donations for the Robert Moses Caring Closet. The closet collects small nonperishable food items, clothing items and school supplies for students in need. The Lions Club decided to help and also offer donations to all the schools in the district. They provided a $200 check for each of the five elementary schools’ Caring Closets, the Robert Moses Middle School Caring Closet and the North Babylon High School Food Pantry – a total of $1,400 for the North Babylon Schools outreach programs. Autism And Children

According to the National Autism Association, autism is a bio-neurological developmental disability that affects the normal development of the brain in various areas. Those areas include social interaction, communication skills and cognitive function. Autism generally appears before a child reaches his or her third birthday, and the NAA notes it is diagnosed

four times as often in boys than it is in girls. Roughly 40 percent of children with autism do not speak, but parents whose children speak between the ages of 12 and 18 months should know that such youngsters can still ultimately be diagnosed with autism. In such instances, the NAA notes that children lose the words they previously learned. Incidences of

autism appear to be on the rise, though the reasons for that remain unclear. According to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the prevalence of autism had risen to one in every 59 children by 2018. That’s twice as great as the rate in 2004, when the CDC reported one in 125 children were diagnosed with autism.

Nominating petitions shall not describe any specific vacancy upon the Board for which the candidate is nominated.
