Long Island Music & Entertainment Hall Of Fame Now Accepting 2024 Music Scholarship Applications

The Long Island Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame (LIMEHOF) is now accepting applications for its 2024 Student Scholarship program. The deadline for applications is Friday, May 10th, 2024.

LIMEHOF will award $1,000 scholarships to graduating students. These scholarships will provide funding to eligible graduating high school students from Nassau, Suffolk, Brooklyn, Queens, or Kings (Brooklyn) Counties who have shown an interest in pursuing a career in music or performing arts. Legislator Donnelly Joins Babylon Supervisor Schaffer

At Deer Park, North Babylon Little League Opening Days

Suffolk County Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Deer Park) joined Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer, league officials, parents, neighbors and young sluggers as the Deer Park and North Babylon Little Leagues opened their 2024 baseball seasons with their respective parades and

ceremonies on Saturday, April 13.

Both events were wellattended by excited players and parents, eager to once again hear the crack of the bat. Each featured a parade that culminated with onfield ceremonies at Pine Acres Park in Deer Park and Phelps Lane Park in North

Babylon. In addition, in North Babylon, Legislator Donnelly and Supervisor Schaffer honored a group of heroes who jumped into action to provide medical attention during a charity softball game last June.

Hospital Association Offers $2,000 Scholarship

The Nassau-Suffolk Hospital Council (NSHC) announces a $2,000 scholarship for college juniors/seniors or post graduate students who are studying Journalism, Marketing/ Communications, or Healthcare Administration. (The scholarship is not for clinical-based study.)

The Ann Marie Brown Memorial Scholarship honors the late Ann Marie Brown, who served as vice president for government and public relations for the Hospital Council from 1983 to 1993. The scholarship

is administered by the Hospital Council’s Communications Committee.

The South Shore Audubon Society is offering two $1,000 scholarships for College juniors, seniors, or graduate students earning a degree in the areas of biological or environmental science. Previous winners have used their scholarships to help purchase books, to pay for travel expenses to field sites, for specialized equipment or other educational needs.

Six Stress Reduction Tips For Caregivers During

Stress doesn’t just affect your mood—it can have long-term health impacts as well if you don’t take steps to manage it constructively. For individuals who face the stressful task of caring for a family member with Alzheimer’s disease or another dementia-related illness, the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA) is offering six stress reduction tips for caregivers as part of National Stress Awareness Month (April).

“Family caregivers often find it challenging to make time for themselves, but being proactive about addressing caregiver stress and self-care is not selfish; it’s essential and it benefits both the caregiver and the person for whom they are caring,” said Jennifer Reeder, LCSW, AFA’s Director of Educational and Social Services. “Failing to manage stress increases the risks of caregiver burnout, depression, and many other mental and physical health issues. Caregivers need to take care of themselves so they can provide the best

possible care for their loved ones.”

Family caregivers of people with Alzheimer’s and related dementias are at greater risk for anxiety, depression, and poorer quality of life than caregivers of people with other conditions, and provide care for a longer duration of time, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

AFA offers these six stress reduction tips for family caregivers:

Be adaptable and positive. Your attitude influences stress levels for both you and the person you’re caring for. If you can “go with the flow,” and avoid fighting the current, that will help you both stay relaxed—conversely, becoming aggravated or agitated will increase the chances that your person will as well. Focus on how to adjust to the situation in a constructive way. Deal with what you can control. Some things are totally out of your control.

What is in your power to control is how you respond and react to these outside factors. Concentrating on finding solutions can help make the problem itself a little less stressful.

Set realistic goals and go slow. Everything cannot be resolved at once, nor does it need to be. Don’t hold yourself to unrealistic expectations. Prioritize, set practical goals, do your best to achieve them, and take things one day at a time. Mind your health. Inadequate rest, poor diet, and lack of exercise can all exacerbate stress (and cause other health problems as well). As best you can, make it a priority to get sleep, eat right, drink plenty of water and find ways to be active. You cannot provide quality care to a loved one if you don’t take care of yourself. Clear and refresh your mind. Exercise, yoga, meditating, listening to music or even taking a few deep breaths can all help relax the mind and reduce stress. Find something that works for you and do it

regularly!

Share your feelings. Disconnecting from your support structure and staying bottled-up increases stress. Whether it’s with a loved one, trusted friend or a professional, don’t be reluctant to talk about your stress, because that can actually help relieve it!

AFA’s Helpline has licensed social workers available for caregivers seven days to

provide support or even just listen.

AFA’s Helpline, staffed entirely by licensed social workers who are specifically trained in dementia care, can provide additional information and support for families. The Helpline is available seven days a week by phone (866-232-8484), text message (646-5865283), and web chat (www. alzfdn.org).

Adventureland Announces Details of Multi-Year,

Plan & New Rides

Adventureland has announced the details of its multi-year, five-phase $10 million redevelopment plan of Long Island’s most popular amusement park, as well as a new partnership with Catholic Health. This marks one of the biggest investment projects in the park’s 62-year history since the installation of the ride called ‘Turbulence’ in 2015, which cost $5 million. The most visible and immediate change is the addition of two new rides for the upcoming 2024 season, which include the ‘Jr. Pirate Ship Ride’ and ‘Moon Chaser.’ The second phase involves the addition of a first-of-itskind custom-made ride called ‘Wave Twister,’ which is expected to open in time

for the spring 2025 season. There are at least two more planned rides that are to be added over the next three phases. These will be the first new rides since the addition of the ‘FireBall’ in 2022, which was a $2 million investment.

Adventureland estimates that by the end of the fifth phase, there will be a 10% growth in employment to support the new ‘Legacy Corner’ section, which is expected to be completed in 2028.

Catholic Health Partnership

Catholic Health is sponsoring the main entrance and the City Hall Building, which has now been renamed the Catholic Health Wellness Center. This area is home

to ‘Guest Relations,’ ‘First Aid,’ and the ‘Lost and Found.’ Another addition is a blue line throughout Adventureland that will direct guests from anywhere in the park to the Catholic Health Wellness Center. Catholic Health will also have a presence in the park during familyfriendly events like the ‘Egg Scramble’ and ‘Pumpkin Park’. Catholic Health will also feature a variety of health-focused educational programs for park guests throughout the season.

Legacy Corner

A large part of the investment will be the creation of the ‘Legacy Corner,’ which will be on the front southeast side of the park about a little over an acre in size. In addition

to at least four new rides, brand-new concession stands, restrooms, and other amenities will be constructed. Annually, Adventureland hires over 650 part-time employees. The full five-phase project is expected to be completed by 2028.

Retired Rides

In the weeks leading up to its 2024 season opening, Adventureland announced the retirement of the ‘Log Flume,’ ‘Pirate Ship’ ride and ‘Spinning Cars’ to make way for new rides.

New Rides

The ‘Jr. Pirate Ship’ ride is geared towards—but not limited to—children who are from 5-to-8 years old. It is similar to the larger scale ‘Pirate Ship’ ride which was recently removed to

make room for the ‘Moon Chaser.’ The ‘Moon Chaser’ is a 45' tall galaxy-themed thrill ride which spins, twists, dips, and inverts riders. This ride is unique because it is currently the only one in the park that goes upside down. This ride is geared towards children who are 11 years old or older. The second phase will introduce the new ride— ‘Wave Twister.’ This is a first-of-its-kind ride that was custom built for Adventureland. The ‘Wave Twister’ is a family ride. It was made in Switzerland by RES Rides.

One Word That Can Change Everything

Last week, I pulled out of my office parking spot which is on the corner of Linton Avenue and Montauk Highway (across from the Lindenhurst Diner). I sat at the red light and looked back at my building to see a mural I had painted on it when I moved in two years ago.

I saw the side of the building as a blank canvas and thought about all the people who would drive by my building every morning and every evening. This was a golden advertising opportunity, but what did I want to tell them? Maybe I could paint something about JoAnn Cilla Real Estate or come up with a witty tag line to get people to call me if they were looking to buy or sell a house.

Nah, that’s not my style. I would rather let my friends and residents of Lindenhurst know how much I appreciate the support they gave me when I started my business in 2021. I also wanted to let people know who might be new to the area, or even those just passing through for the day, that we appreciated them spending time in our town.

Yes, that was it, but what three words would make people stop what they were doing to appreciate where they were at that exact moment?

Then it hit me…

I want the mural to remind people to pause and appreciate the big victories and the quiet moments. I want it to say to my clients, thank you for your trust and friendship. To my team, thank you for your dedication and hard work. And to our community, thank you for making Lindenhurst the best place to live. If you’re passing by, I hope the message inspires you.
