Longevity in marriage is something to be celebrated. Couples who reach fiftieth and sixtieth wedding anniversaries often commemorate those anniversaries with big parties. But there are some around the world who would consider golden anniversary celebrants to still be newlyweds. In December 2015, Karam Chand, 110, and his wife, Kartari Chand, 103, from Bradford, West Yorkshire (originally from India), celebrated their 90th wedding anniversary, becoming the world’s longest-betrothed couple.

In America, John and Ann Betar, ages 104 and 100, respectively, have been married 83 years as of 2016. The couple eloped in 1932. They have been named one of America’s longest-married couples by the Worldwide Marriage Encounter.

North Shore Animal League America’s Adoption Center is currently conducting adoption by appointment only.

Our Adoption Team is contacting pre-approved adopters with a scheduled day and time to complete their adoption.

The health and wellbeing of NSALA staff, volunteers, adopters, and the community remains our priority at this time.

We currently have over 40 dogs of various ages and sizes on campus, as well as more than 100 felines, from kittens to older cats, all looking for loving homes.

As always, the animals on the NSALA Port Washington campus are being well-cared for by our devoted staff.

In addition to finding homes for more than 110 canines, some of whom were from our recent Mill Dog rescue (we saved 100 dogs and puppies from deplorable

conditions with some going to our area shelter partners,) we have also placed more than 30 animals into foster homes.

During this time, the Alex Lewyt Veterinary Medical Center will remain open to see sick patients and emergency cases only.

While we are doing adoptions by appointment, NSALA’s Adoption Center is temporarily closed to the general public in accordance with New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo’s statewide directives and to control the number of people in the Adoption Center at any one time.

How Does The New Coronavirus Affect You And Your Pets?

Pet owners can rest easy that there is no reason to believe that dogs or cats in the United States might be a source of infection for the new coronavirus disease — COVID-19 — or cause its spread according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.

And so far, according to the CDC, there have been no reports of pets becoming sick with COVID-19.

This coronavirus appears to be primarily transmitted from human to human. As a pet owner, you may have heard of canine coronavirus, an intestinal infection in dogs, especially puppies, and feline coronavirus, which can cause feline infectious peritonitis (FIP). These types of coronaviruses have been around for quite some time and are not associated with the current outbreak.

To protect yourself, your family, and possibly even

your pets, from this new coronavirus, you should follow these precautions: • Frequently wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water (use hand sanitizer with more than 60 percent alcohol if you can’t wash) • Avoid close contact with people who are sick—stay at least three feet away • Cover your mouth/ nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze, then throw away the used tissues and wash your hands • Stay at home if you are sick • Sanitize often-used surfaces in your home and office If you do become sick with COVID-19, how then should you care for your pet? The CDC recommends that you restrict contact with pets and other animals just as you would with people. Ask another member of your

household to care for your pets while you are sick. If you must do it yourself, wash your hands before and after you interact and wear a facemask. The toughest part for pet lovers is that you must remember that you really should not be petting, snuggling, or sharing kisses or food with your pet!

Four seniors from the North Babylon High School had their talents displayed this past month during the GO APE 13 Annual AP High School Student Art Exhibition.

Necessity – Still the Mother of Invention Science-minded Catholic School Family School Builds Ventilator in Kitchen

For one science and health-focused family in Long Island’s Catholic school community the global pandemic and cancellation of this year’s STEM Fair gave them the time, and the incentive they needed to go above and beyond what anyone could have expected. The Stadelman family, intrigued by the global shortage of medical ventilators, built a ventilator in their kitchen with items they had around the house and in Mr. Stadelman’s first aid kit.

Meet Erin and Robert Stadelman, and their son Michael. Erin is a computer/technology teacher at Our Lady of the Hamptons Regional School in Southampton. Her

husband, Robert, works as an Electrical Engineer and volunteers as an EMTCC (Emergency Medical Technician - Critical Care) in their home town. Their son, Michael, is a student at St. Mary’s School in East Islip. Like the rest of us, they are respecting the quarantine by staying home. Also like the rest of us, the Stadelman’s wanted to do something to help.

Unlike the rest of us, the Stadelman family actually used their time at home to build a ventilator!

During the build, Robert Stadelman taught son Michael a lot about the inner components and machinations of a ventilator; about BVMs (bag valve masks), what a piston is and does, and Michael learned to work

with electronics and circuits. For Robert, this was a proof of concept prototype. “I sure with a little work we could improve this to be a viable emergency ventilator. Said Robert Stadelman.” From Mom Erin’s perspective, “Michael learned a whole lot about ventilators, electronic components and a host of other scientific concepts.” Said Erin Stadelman. “It was a great science lesson with a real life application!”

When it comes to pizza toppings, some may argue that plain cheese is best, but pepperoni is a crowd favorite. How Earth Day And Environmental Conciousness Have Evolved

Reduce, reuse, recycle is a mantra for many people. It’s difficult to imagine that just 50 years ago awareness of the state of the environment was not part of the collective consciousness.

An emerging public consciousness about the planet began amid environmental issues like increased air pollution and massive consumption of fossil fuels in the 1960s. The bestselling book “Silent Spring” by Rachel Carson also raised public concern for living organisms and the links between pollution and public health. The push for environmental reform gained even more momentum on April 22, 1970, when the first Earth Day was celebrated. Then-Senator Gaylord Nelson from Wisconsin put Earth Day on the national stage following a large oil spill that struck off the coast of Santa Barbara, Calif.

Before this disaster, recycling was not a word in the popular lexicon.

But when the disaster struck, people began to reason that changes would have to be made to save the planet.

Since the first Earth Day 50 years ago, many strides have been made in the environmental movement.

This grassroots initiative gave rise to the establishment of the Environmental Protection Agency, the Clean Air Act and the Clean Water Act. Environmental awareness has become much more mainstream and is a less polarizing issue than it was in the 1970s, although there are still debates about the reality of climate change and other risk factors.

Public demand for environmental safeguards grew in the second half of the twentieth century, and those demands have grown stronger in recent years. Legislation is continually evolving to protect the air, land and water. Sustainability has joined the buzzwords of the movement, and most industries now have a vested interest in changes that can minimize risk to human health and the environment.

Mitigating or avoiding environmental effects, proper waste disposal, reduction in water discharge, and emphasis on reducing, reusing and recycling have become important components of environmental wellness. And people are being educated at earlier stages on the importance of environmental mindfulness. For example, core subjects of the environmental movement are increasingly covered in elementary schools.

Twenty million people turned out for the first Earth Day in the United States. Today, more than 190 countries are engaged and more than one billion individuals are mobilized for action every Earth Day, advises the Earth Day Network. To mark the 50th anniversary, the most pressing topic for the year is climate change.

Climate Action is the 2020 Earth Day theme to engage the global public.

There is still work to be done, but great progress has been made since 1970.

Five West Babylon Senior High School DECA members – Michael Capriola, Sabrina Catapano, Olivia Golebiewski, Megan Le and Emily Villarreal – competed at the annual New York State DECA

Career Conference from Feb. 26-28 in Rochester.

The students competed against more than 1,900 students from across the state. Students who competed at this state conference had to qualify at the regional level in

January.

Golebiewski won a top 19 medal in her category, travel and tourism Team and Le was recognized on stage as a new member of the DECA Honor Society.

Suffolk County Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Huntington Station) recently honored North Babylon Residents John and Donna Mangiapane, owners of Mangia Pizza & Italian Restaurant in North Babylon, for all that they do for the community.

Presenting a County Proclamation during the monthly meeting of the North Babylon Chamber of Commerce on Monday, February 24, Legislator Donnelly recognized and thanked the Mangiapanes for their long-time philanthropic generosity, oftentimes done in privacy without fanfare. According to Legislator Donnelly, the

Mangiapanes are “always quick to step up and help a neighbor” when they hear of someone or some group in need. In addition to providing this assistance, they also regularly open their doors for North Babylon organizations, businesses and nonprofits as a meeting place, allowing their restaurant to serve as an unofficial community center.

Established by the Mangiapane family in 1987 as a pizzeria, John Mangiapane took over as owner and operator in 2001 and, staying in the same location, expanded into a full-service eatery that has earned a well-deserved

reputation as one of the best restaurants in town, known for a commitment to consistently insisting on the highest standards in service and quality.

“It is a pleasure to honor and thank Donna and John Mangiapane for all they do,” said Legislator Donnelly.

“The three-decade success of Mangia Pizza can be directly attributed to their commitment to caring as much about their customers and the community as they do about their food.”

Mangia Pizza & Italian Restaurant is located at 785 Deer Park Avenue in North Babylon.

Student Scientists Succeed Babylon Memorial Grade School recently hosted its annual science fair, which featured projects by students in grades three to six on a wide range of scientific research topics of their choice. Finalists from all four grades participated in individual interviews about their projects conducted by district science chair Melissa Callahan and high school science teacher Claire Donaldson. As a result, third grader Fin Nava, fourth grader Elizabeth

Doherty, fifth grader Adam Miller and sixth grader Nathaniel Schubart were each awarded first place in their respective grade levels for their outstanding work.

These budding scientists will advance to Brookhaven National Laboratory’s Elementary Science Fair Competition on May 9.

Besides curiosity, the students also had a variety of personal motivations for their research. Schubart, who won for his project “Does Recycling Education

Improve Recycling Outcomes in Quality or Quantity?,” explained, “Not many people know what can and can’t be recycled so I decided to do a project that would benefit my family, my village and maybe even my state.”

The district congratulates the winners on their accomplishments and commends all who participated on their dedication to scientific inquiry.

Hospital Association Offers $2,000 Scholarship The Nassau-Suffolk Hospital Council (NSHC) announces a $2,000 scholarship for college juniors/seniors or post graduate students who are studying Journalism, Marketing/ Communications, or Healthcare Administration.

(The scholarship is not for clinical-based study.)

The Ann Marie Brown Memorial Scholarship honors the late Ann Marie Brown, who served as vice president for government and public relations for the Hospital Council from 1983 to 1993. The scholarship

is administered by the Hospital Council’s Communications Committee.

Filing deadline is June 15, 2020.

Stony Brook University Hospital Accepting i-Pad Donations for Telehealth Distancing Measures Members of the community have been reaching out and asking how they can help the healthcare professionals and those afflicted with COVID-19 pandemic.

One very important way: we need an influx of iPads to keep our inpatients connected to

their providers and their families.

Anyone who has an iPad that is not being used, please consider donating to Stony Brook University Hospital.

We will repurpose the donated device to provide telecommunication for our patients to connect

with our medical staff.

We are looking for about one hundred devices of a supported iPad model.

Before donation, the device should be cleaned, reset (click here for instructions), and placed in a zip lock bag if possible with a viable power chord.

It takes a team effort to

convert these devices into a secure patient friendly solution. We will do our best to make your gift count and give someone comfort during these remarkable times.

The donations of medical supplies and comfort care items such as gum, lip balm, tissues and

snacks have been pouring in and we appreciate the community’s response.

We’ve also received many video messages of support and are sharing those throughout the hospital.

Please keep them coming!

In order to maintain social distancing and safety, appointments

are being scheduled for donation drop off.
