The Town is committed to combating and preventing BWIs—the leading cause of injuries and tragic incidents on our waterways—through education, enforcement of

boating regulations, and the endorsement of powerful legislation such as Brianna’s Law and Senator Martinez’s bill.

There’s Water Damage to My Basement Wall. Am I insured?

It’s a fact of life. Most Homeowners haven’t a clue about how or what damages are covered by insurance. Among the most confusing of claims are those caused by water. To understand how and when water damage is covered, consider three different sources of the water.

Floods are water from outside a home where water is covering 2 acres of land. This is not covered by Home insurance. To be covered against flood damage one needs to own a flood policy. Most Americans do not live in Flood zones and do not have Flood policies. However, 20% of all flood claims come from people who do NOT live in flood zones. How can that

be? Think of water-main pipes that have broken in low lying areas. Consider record rainfalls of several inches. Remember how this led to drowning deaths last year in NYC basement apartments.

‘Back-up sewer and drain’ are just as described. Water backs up from the sewer or a sump-

pump drain. Water flows backwards from the way it normally flows. Most insurance policies require a separate endorsement adding ‘Back-up sewer and drain’ coverage. Generally, the annual Declarations Pages received by the homeowner reference which endorsements are, or are not, part of the policy.

Water over-flow from a sink, tub, or toilet is NOT a back-up. These are over-flows, as described. Consider the source. Is the water emanating from outside the home (back-up) or from inside the home (over-flow.) Over-flow IS covered by Home policies.

Water damage coming from an above-ground source (roof or walls) these are covered by the Home policy, with limitations. Have questions? Ask your insurance agent.

30 Is National Therapy Animal Day: Consider Volunteering With Your Pet

It’s no secret animals can have a positive impact on a person’s mental and physical health. That’s why every year thousands of facilities such as libraries, schools, hospitals, assisted living, and more ask Pet Partners volunteers to bring therapy animals to visit and provide comfort to their students, residents, patients, and customers. This April 30 is a special day to recognize the beneficial role therapy dogs and other therapy animals, in partnership with their human companions, play in creating happier, healthier communities. Unfortunately, there’s a shortage of therapy animal teams in the United States. Pet Partners is the nation’s leading registry of therapy animals, and their volunteer teams can’t fulfill all the requests they receive for therapy animal visits. The need for therapy animals has never been greater to provide comfort and support, especially after the impacts of the pandemic, economic uncertainty, and social discord in recent years.

The good news is that a wide variety of species can be therapy animals, not

just dogs. Cats, equines, rabbits, guinea pigs, rats, mini pigs, birds, and even llamas and alpacas are eligible for registration through the Pet Partners Therapy Animal Program, which makes more than three million visits a year.

“An animal’s temperament is what determines whether they might make a good registered therapy animal with Pet Partners, not any specific species or breed,” said Pet Partners President and CEO C. Annie Peters. “Many of our therapy animals are rescue pets, and they assist everyone from veterans with PTSD, seniors living with Alzheimer’s, students with literacy challenges, patients in recovery, and people with intellectual disabilities. We couldn’t be more grateful for all that our volunteer therapy teams do for people in need around the world.”

Therapy animals have a special aptitude for interacting with members of the public and enjoy doing so. Therapy animal handlers have a strong trust-based bond with their pet and facilitate interactions that benefit

all involved. The handleranimal pair takes part in an extensive evaluation process to make sure they will be successful with people in a variety of circumstances.

We have experts available to talk about the value therapy animals bring to communities, what behaviors a pet should exhibit, how the process works and more. We also have therapy animal handlers all across the United States who would love to talk about the joys of volunteering with their pets.

Pet Partners is also specifically seeking more cats and handlers to become registered volunteer teams. In partnership with Cat Person, a cat care brand, a research study on the Cat Human Bond found that cats can provide a special form of comfort that dogs cannot. Special incentives are also being offered for new cat teams.

Autism And Children

According to the National Autism Association, autism is a bio-neurological developmental disability that affects the normal development of the brain in various areas. Those areas include social interaction, communication skills and cognitive function. Autism generally appears before a child reaches his or her third birthday, and the NAA notes it is diagnosed four times as often in boys than it is in girls. Roughly 40 percent of children with autism do not speak, but parents whose children speak between the ages of

12 and 18 months should know that such youngsters can still ultimately be diagnosed with autism. In such instances, the NAA notes that children lose the words they previously learned. Incidences of autism appear to be on the rise, though the reasons for that remain unclear. According to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the prevalence of autism had risen to one in every 59 children by 2018. That’s twice as great as the rate in 2004, when the CDC reported one in 125 children were diagnosed with autism.

A Brief History Of Earth Day

Earth Day is celebrated each April and draws attention to a range of issues affecting the environment. Earth Day aims to raise awareness in the hope of inspiring change.

Earth Day is observed on April 22. According to National Geographic, the first Earth Day was celebrated in 1970. Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson was inspired to begin a national celebration uniting the environmental movement after witnessing environmental activism in the 1960s. With the help of Denis Hayes, a graduate student at Harvard University, Nelson organized the first Earth Day. Twenty million people participated in events across the United States and strengthened support for environmental legislation like the

Clean Air Act and the Endangered Species Act.

Earth Day was expanded to a global initiative in 1990 under guidance from Hayes. Nearly 200 million participants in more than 140 countries now join together to protect the planet. Awareness continues to be raised each year regarding renewable energy and climate change.

One of the hallmarks of Earth Day celebrations is the planting of trees. Researchers estimate roughly 15 billion trees are cut down each year across the globe. By planting a tree every Earth Day, people can make a difference. Trees absorb carbon dioxide release oxygen and bolster ecosystems for wildlife. Shade trees can reduce reliance on fans

and air conditioning systems.

The main message of Earth Day 2024 is the need to commit to ending reliance on plastics, says EarthDay.org. The goal is a 60 percent reduction in the production of all plastics by 2040. Plastics are bad for the environment a growing body of research indicates they have an adverse effect on the major systems of the body, including immune, respiratory, digestive, and hormonal systems.

Everyone can do their part to promote the ideals behind Earth Day. For 54 years, millions of people have been advocating for change to benefit the planet and human and animal health, and that fight is ongoing.

Environmental Scholarships Offered

The South Shore Audubon Society is offering two $1,000 scholarships for College juniors, seniors, or graduate students earning a degree in the areas of biological or environmental science. This includes wildlife management, forestry, animal behavior, ecology, marine biology, oceanography, mammalogy, ornithology or the field of sustainable and renewable energy. Previous winners have used their scholarships to help purchase books, to pay for travel expenses to

field sites, for specialized equipment or other educational needs.

To be eligible for the Scholarships, applicants must be residents of one of the areas listed at www.ssaudubon. org/areas-we-serve.asp and/or attend a college in Nassau or Suffolk County. Valedictorian And Salutatorian

MATTHEW HEFFER

The Babylon Union Free School District is proud to announce that Matthew Heffer and Aemen Iqbal are the Babylon JuniorSenior High School Class of 2024 valedictorian and salutatorian, respectively.

Matthew has a weighted GPA of 105.07 and is seeking to major in mechanical engineering. At Babylon Junior-Senior High School he took part in the cross country, tennis team, Leo club, jazz band and pit orchestra. He is a founding member of

the gardening club at the high school and has been a member of numerous honor societies. He also plays guitar and is an avid photographer. Aemen has a weighted GPA of 104.13 and is looking to pursue a major in international relations. She has been president of the world language club, vice president of the environmental club, treasurer of the Leo club, and has been a member of the class cabinet, student council, field hockey

team, mock trial team and numerous honor societies. She also studies ninjutsu.

“These students have shown great dedication to both their studies and their communities,” said Babylon High School Principal Al Cirone. “Matthew and Aemen have given so much to our school during their time here, and we wish them the best of luck in their careers after graduation.’

Two Student-Actors Receive Rees Nominations

STUDENT-ACTORS RECEIVE REES NOMINATIONS - West Babylon Senior High School students Kirra Murphy and Matthew Gennings were nominated for the annual Roger Rees Awards for Excellence in Musical Theater. These two students were chosen by adjudicators for their recent roles in the school’s production of “Mamma Mia.” Murphy and Gennings were two of 50 students chosen from all of New York State to participate in this competition. They will compete with students from all across New York during the first weekend in May, working with Broadway industry coaches to try to move on to the National High School Musical Theater Awards.
