Town Of Babylon Honors Local Student For Service To Veterans

The Town of Babylon recently honored 10-year-old West Babylon resident Tyler Sullo for his exceptional service to veterans in the community. Tyler, the student body president of Forest Avenue Elementary School, declared helping local veterans to be a part of his electoral platform. Inspired

by his veteran grandparents and those in his community, he fulfilled this goal through his organization of a heartwarming dinner to benefit veterans.

“In West Babylon, we are lucky to have great people like Tyler who make up our community to help all of our organizations run,” said

Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer. “That is what living in the Town of Babylon is all about.”

Tyler organized a free February 13 dinner for veterans that not only provided a delicious meal of spaghetti and meatballs but a sense of togetherness and gratitude near Valentine’s

Day and $1,000 raised for American Legion Post 1634 in West Babylon as well. Tyler and his family coordinated with over two dozen local businesses to secure items for 29 raffled-off gift baskets, and funds were also raised through a 50/50 raffle. American Legion Post 1634 was incredibly grateful for the funds, which will help

maintain the building and its services to veterans, including crucial veterans support groups.

In a ceremony, the Town of Babylon Board presented Tyler with a certificate of appreciation, and American Legion Post 1634 bestowed him with an outstanding service award. “It goes without saying that this is

a tremendous thing to do, particularly for someone of his age,” said Chair of the Town of Babylon Veterans Advisory Council and Councilman DuWayne Gregory. “As a veteran, I am grateful to Tyler for recognizing the need to help our veterans and the incredible impact he can have.”

The Charity of the Month for April is Rebuilding Together Long Island

Rebuilding Together

Long Island is the local chapter of the national nonprofit organization, Rebuilding Together. The charity provides free home repairs to the frail and elderly, our veterans, people with disabilities and families young children. Those who receive the free home repairs must meet their financial criteria. Their mission is to repair homes, revitalize communities and rebuild lives. They proudly help economicallydisadvantaged homeowners, so they can live in comfort and safety while maintaining their independence.

In 1992, a small group of retirees were looking for ways to give back to their community. They saw how many homeowners were struggling to keep up with the expense of maintaining the homes. Seniors needed modifications so they could age in place safely. They reached out to the national organization Rebuilding Together, Inc. and soon became the local a liate, Rebuilding Together Long Island. Currently there are approximately 120 a liates across the country.

Today they have 100 volunteers, which are the heart and soul of their organization. These individuals come from all walks of life and work tirelessly to lend a helping hand with carpentry, electrical, plumbing repairs, along with home modifications weatherization, yard clean-up and more. They have provided repairs to over 2,600 local homeowners in need at a current pace of over 150 projects annually within Nassau and Su olk counties.

Seeing improvement in the lives of Long Island residents is truly what makes all the hard work worth it. There are countless testimonials from those who have received assistance, including the touching letter below.

“I just want to reach out again to thank all involved with the preparation and construction of the ramp for my dad. It has been a sincere pleasure; from the first meeting with Marian and Kathy, to meeting Joe and coming up with the plan, and then witnessing the building process. The crew were all so wonderful and inspiring! I was amazed at how quickly and

smoothly it all came together! Not only is the ramp functional, it’s beautiful and brightens up the dark patio! It was a great moment when I first wheeled my father down the driveway, onto the sidewalk, and he raised up his arms with a big smile and loudly exclaimed “Hello world, I’m here!” I can hear my mom saying “God is good” and I want to add, thank God for good people.”

With the support of their many volunteers and partners, Rebuilding Together Long Island has become a wellregarded organization, recognized for their work and involvement with communities and organizations that span across Long Island, however they need your help to keep up the momentum! There are three main ways you can get involved with their organization:

1) Volunteer: They are looking for volunteers to work hands on with a crew performing home repair work. Individuals do not have to have specific handyman skills; training is available. All volunteers must be at least 18 years old. Additionally, they are looking for a licensed Plumber or Electrician to volunteer their time and skills to help on specific projects. Lastly, they are in need of home visitors to walk through the homes of needy individuals for a safety inspection (those fluent in English and in Spanish is a plus!)

2) Sponsor a Project: Attention business owners! You can sponsor a project they are actively working on, giving you the opportunity to demonstrate your commitment to community service and to improving the quality of life for people on Long Island.

3) Donate: Consider making a donation at www. rebuildingtogetherlongisland.org! Funding is a continuous requirement to support their e orts and all donations are greatly appreciated. Track Teams Honored

Members of the boys and girls winter track teams were honored at the North Babylon Board of Education meeting on March 23. The girls indoor track team was county champions, and the boys team was named league champions.

Jason Friesen, the district’s director of physical education, health education, recreation and athletics, introduced members of the team and highlighted some of the individual accomplishments of the student athletes this season.

Boys track team honors included Alden Chambers and Shobanni Richards. Chambers was named AllState in the 55m dash, placed fourth in New York State in the 55m dash and third in New York State Public Schools in the 55m dash. He was also named the Suffolk County Champion in 55m dash.

Richards received All-State and All-County honors in the 300m dash. He placed sixth in New York State in the 300m dash, fifth in New York State Public Schools in the 300m dash, second in the 300m dash, and third in the triple jump at the county championship. Lastly, coach Matthew Temme was named Suffolk County Coach of the Year.

Girls winter track honors were extended to Samara Lawrence, Djoonicka Buissereth, Norbertude Mackayla Nerjuste, Shavanna Richards, Jalia Lucas, Madison Thorbourne, Liah Ruvolo and Alicia DeFilippis. Lawrence was named league champion and county champion in the 55m dash, 300m dash and 4x200m relay. She was All-Sectional and AllState in the 55m dash and 4x200m relay. At the state championship, she finished seventh in New York State Federation and third in the New York State Public Schools. Buissereth was league runner-up and county runner-up in the 55m dash. She was awarded All-County Academic honors for being in the top 10% of the graduating class along with her athletic accomplishments.

Nerjuste was league champion and county champion in the long jump as well as the 4x200m relay. She was All-Sectional in the long jump. At the state championship, she qualified and competed in the long jump and finished her season with a personal best. Additionally, she was awarded All-County academic honors. Richards was league runner-up in the 300m dash. She was All-County and All-

Sectional in the 300m dash as well as the 4x400m and 4x200m relay. Additionally at the state championship, Richards qualified for the intersectional relay based on her 300m performance. This relay not only took first at the state championship, they broke the Suffolk County, and New York State record.

Lucas was All-League in the 55m hurdles and AllCounty in the 4x400m relay. She received All-Sectional recognition and was a state qualifier in the 4x200m relay. Thorbourne was AllLeague in the triple jump, All-County in the 4x400m relay, and All-Sectional and a state qualifier in the 4x200m relay. As the team’s main competitive racewalker, Ruvolo qualified for the National Championship where she placed seventh, narrowly missing All-American honors. Additionally, she was awarded AllCounty Academic honors. DeFilippis was All-League in the 3000m run and 4x400m relay and AllCounty in the 600m and 4x400m relay. At the state championship, she ran on the 4x200m relay, which placed sixth in the New York State Federation and fifth in the New York State public schools, qualifying for All-State and AllFederation honors.

According to the National Autism Association, autism is a bio-neurological developmental disability that affects the normal development of the brain in various areas. Those areas include social interaction, communication skills and cognitive function. Autism generally appears before a child reaches his or her third birthday, and the NAA notes it is diagnosed four times as often in boys than it is in girls. Roughly 40 percent of children with autism do not speak, but parents whose children speak between the ages of

12 and 18 months should know that such youngsters can still ultimately be diagnosed with autism. In such instances, the NAA notes that children lose the words they previously learned. Incidences of autism appear to be on the rise, though the reasons for that remain unclear. According to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the prevalence of autism had risen to one in every 59 children by 2018. That’s twice as great as the rate in 2004, when the CDC reported one in 125 children were diagnosed with autism.

Outdoor Stations Of The Cross – 1.5 Mile Walking Service – Offered By Catholic Cemeteries Of Long Island At Cemetery Of The Holy Rood On Good Friday

Catholic Cemeteries of Long Island welcomes the Catholic faithful across Long Island to participate in its Stations of the Cross prayer service at Cemetery of the Holy Rood in Westbury this Good Friday, April 7th. This prayer service, which is one of the largest attended events at Catholic Cemeteries of Long Island each year, is celebrated annually on Good Friday, one of the most solemn days of the Christian calendar. During the prayer service, the Catholic faithful will follow a 1.5 mile walking route throughout Holy Rood to commemorate Christ’s redemptive sacrifice through the 14 Stations of the Cross.

Each station is signified by a different cross/sculpture at the cemetery. Deacons from Catholic Cemeteries of Long Island will assist in leading the service for attendees.

Hundreds of Catholics are expected to take part in the Good Friday services at the

Cemetery of the Holy Rood.

Faithful can also experience Holy Rood’s Stations of the Cross on their own with selfdirected tours or via a virtual option for those who wish to partake from their homes.

Donating Blood

The Foods You Eat Could Affect Whether Or Not You Can Donate

The foods a person eats before attempting to donate blood could affect whether or not he or she is allowed to donate. According to the American Red Cross, its staff members routinely check the level of hemoglobin in donors’ blood and platelets before they accept donations. Hemoglobin is a protein in the body that contains iron and gives blood its distinctive red color. Hemoglobin plays a vital role

in human health, carrying oxygen from the lungs to nourish all of the tissues in the body. Hemoglobin levels are checked using fingersticks, and if hemoglobin levels are low, then donors will be asked to wait to donate until their levels return to normal. So what does food have to do with hemoglobin? Iron is a part of hemoglobin and found in many of the foods a person eats. Iron helps people

maintain their strength and energy, and it’s also necessary to help the body make new blood cells to replace the ones that are lost through blood donations. The Red Cross encourages prospective donors to eat healthy foods that are rich in iron and high in vitamin C, as doing so can increase their chances of being accepted as blood donors and can aid in their recoveries after donating.

As the Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) gets ready to kick off its Spring Season in our 10 leagues from Long Island to the Canadian border, the growth of our programs has created a need for additional referees and assistant refs.

There are many wonderful things that happen when a person starts to ref including earning money, having the best view of the action, learning to manage people, learning more about the game, staying or becoming fit, expanding yourself by leaving your comfort zone as well as meeting the greatest people on soccer fields, including your new officiating colleagues. Becoming a youth soccer ref could be one of the best decisions you ever make!

Eastern New York is seeking new referees to be in the middle and/or on the line as assistant referees in youth soccer games. The minimum age is 14 years old to become certified.

Classes are happening throughout the state and they consist of an online learning process wrapped up by a field session. For more info about certification near you, please contact State Youth

How Do I Love Thee? Three Couples Count The Ways Breast Cancer Zoom Forum On April 24

In an honest panel discussion, three couples— Cindy and Bruce, Kim and Anthony and Tim and Sandy--will share how they successfully coped when faced with a breast cancer diagnosis. The free forum, sponsored by the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program, will be held on zoom on Monday, April 24, from 4 pm to 5:15 pm.

Even partners who are strongly committed to one another may face difficult moments when confronted with the extraordinary stress of breast cancer. The following three couples will talk about their journeys together through breast cancer and how they have continued to have lives filled with activity and joy.

Cindy and Bruce met on a blind date 41 years ago. They married, and in

1994, Cindy was treated for breast cancer. Sixteen year later, the couple learned that Cindy’s cancer had come back. Cindy had a mastectomy of the same breast, followed by chemotherapy, Cindy recalls the difficulty of trying to juggle it all when first diagnosed. She reached out to the Young Women’s Support Group at Adelphi connecting with others in her situation and gaining the support she needed to move forward. Today, Cindy is a volunteer at the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program.

Kim and Anthony have been together for 10 years, meeting while Kim was working in a restaurant as a bartender. Anthony is a day trader who attended Columbia University where

he was a pitcher for their baseball team. Together they have a daughter named Savannah who is 7 years old. Kim was just 30 years old when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Since 2019, Kim has been a volunteer with the Adelphi Breast Cancer

Program helping others going through a similar diagnosis.

Tim and Sandy met at a mutual friend’s home when Tim was a freshman in college and Sandy a senior in high school. They had been married for 52 years when they learned Tim

had been diagnosed with advanced breast cancer in June 2020. Tim says that not even in their wildest dreams could they have imagined the rollercoaster ride they would embark on. Tim is committed to sharing his story as a volunteer with the Adelphi

Breast Cancer Program and helping other men learn the signs of breast cancer and the importance of performing regular breast self-exams.
