61st Long Island Artists Exhibition Opens March 4th At The Art League Of Long Island

The Art League of Long Island’s 61st Long Island Artists Exhibition, a biennial event, features 2-D and 3-D works created by artists from Suffolk, Nassau, Brooklyn, and Queens. The exhibit will be on view in the Art League’s spacious Jeanie Tengelsen Gallery through April 7. The reception takes place Saturday, March 11, from 1:00pm to 3:00pm. A Gallery Talk with the exhibition juror, Neill Slaughter, takes place on Thursday, March 30, from 7:00pm to 8:30pm. The gallery, reception, and gallery talk are open to the public, and admission is free.

Exhibition juror Neill Slaughter, has selected 61 works out of the 675 submissions entered by 208 artists. The works selected for display in the gallery encompass a variety of artistic mediums and styles of art created by established and emerging artists.

About the Juror: Artist Neill Slaughter graduated with a BFA degree in 1975 from the University of Georgia and received his

MFA in 1978 from Indiana University in Bloomington. From 1978 until his retirement four decades later, Professor Slaughter taught fine arts courses and art history at the university level (both in the US and England) as well as exhibiting his drawings and paintings nationally and internationally. In 1993 Professor Slaughter moved to Southampton NY from Los Angeles to begin teaching for Long Island University where he was chairperson of the Art Department twice during his quarter century tenure with LIU. Slaughter, now Professor Emeritus, resides in Southampton NY. During his forty years of teaching, Professor Slaughter spent a considerable amount of time traveling throughout the world to teach, conduct research and paint. His extensive travels have influenced what he paints, which often reflect the social conditions of his surroundings. Among his awards and honors, Professor Slaughter has received a Ford Foundation Fellowship in 1977-78,

a Scottish Arts Council Grant in 1980, an LMU Research Grant to Africa in 1988 and a Fulbright Fellowship to India in 1992. In 2003 Professor Slaughter was the awarded the David Newton Award for Excellence in Teaching granted by Long Island University. In 2008 he mounted a thirty-year retrospective, which included a full color catalog funded by Long Island University. In 2017 he was granted Professor Emeritus status by Long Island University. He has presented live art history lectures since his retirement including “A Triumphant Triad” at the Parrish Art Museum in August 2022 comparing and contrasting three great Gilded Age artists, Sargent, Sorolla, and Zorn. Neill Slaughter has had more than thirty solo exhibits and participated in more than ninety national and international group exhibitions. His artwork is in numerous public and private collections throughout the world.

The Charity of the Month for March is Canine Companions®

Companions is a non-profit organization that enhances the lives of people by providing highly trained service dogs and ongoing support to ensure quality partnerships. They proudly o er their support services free of charge to recipients.

Clients come to Canine Companions because of their reputation, the quality of their dogs, the experience of their training sta and the desire to lead a life with greater independence. The organization is proud to have various chapters and training centers across our nation, with their Northeast Region (Long Island Chapter) located right here on Long Island, in Medford.

Located at 286 Middle Island Rd in Medford, the Long Island Chapter works to raise awareness, recruit new puppy raisers and volunteers and support one another’s work on behalf of the Canine Companions’ mission. This Chapter is a lively network filled with opportunities for social engagement from puppy classes to fundraisers. Beyond the satisfaction of doing good work for Canine Companions, lifelong friendships are often formed among chapter members.

The benefits of having a service dog can be indescribable, often life-changing. Canine Companions provides dogs for an array of disabilities; they o er service dogs for adults, children and veterans with a physical or auditory disability or posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), as well as professionals working in a health care, visitation, criminal justice or education settings. The organization typically places between 325 and 375 service dogs per year.

In recent years, Yucca, a Facility Dog, became a new furry member of the Phillips Avenue Elementary School in Riverhead, NY (placed by Canine Companions). She helps students learn responsibility, come out of their shell and even helps those that experience issues at home, such as past traumas or emotional/social issues.

“Having a dog there to just talk to or pet can really help the children,” explained teacher Emilee Raynor. “Yucca loves our

students and they know she is not judging them, so they take more risks when working with her than with their peers.”

Yucca is incorporated into daily lessons, such as language practice, when students read to her and describe the commands Yucca is following. “I have already seen the huge impact that Facility Dog Yucca has made in the classroom. Students are so excited to come to class. They work hard for Yucca and understand their responsibilities.”

Canine Companions volunteer puppy raisers provide specially-bred puppies a safe home, take them to obedience classes, serve up a healthy diet, provide socialization opportunities and give lots of love.

Volunteers are warmly welcomed in other capacities as well, such as Front Desk Reception, General O ce Support, Puppy Transporter and Event Support, amongst other fields. Without loyal volunteers, this organization couldn’t fulfill their mission, so they are beyond grateful for each individual that gives their time and e orts to help.

They received commendations from the elected officials at ceremonies held during the Blue and Gold dinner on February 11 at the Baiting Hollow Scout

Camp in Calverton.

Long Island Elite Selects Paws Of War As 2023 Charity Partner

Long Island Elite, a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization dedicated to fostering the growth and development of local Long Island business professionals and emerging regional leaders, has announced they have selected Nesconsetbased Paws of War as its 2023 charity partner. The announcement came at Long Island Elite’s first meeting of the year at The Heritage Club in Farmingdale.

Paws of War is a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization whose mission is to train and place service animals and companion dogs to support

and provide independence to U.S. military veterans that suffer from the emotional and physical effects of war.

The non-profit also provides animal rescue for U.S. troops who have befriended an animal while serving overseas. The organization also serves as a community center where veterans and first responders come together daily to build bonds and support each other.

The funds raised by Long Island Elite in 2023 will give Paws of War additional resources to further its mission of “helping both ends of the leash” by providing

services to veterans, first responders and their service or companion animals. These activities will support the mental wellbeing of individuals in Paws of War programs, giving back to the heroes who have sacrificed so much for this country. Having service or companion animals has proven to be an effective way to enhance mental wellbeing and reduce veteran suicides. LIE volunteers and funds raised will also assist in rescuing dogs and cats and pairing them with local heroes in the community.

“This partnership between Long Island Elite and Paws of War will enhance the lives of veterans and lead to numerous dogs find their forever homes. We will also raise awareness in our community about Paws of War’s important mission. Our members will see first-hand the challenges that veterans and first responders face, especially those experiencing the effects of PTSD and the positive impact dogs and cats will provide. As a U.S. Marine veteran, I personally understand the challenges and hardships that our veterans and first responders face every day,” said Frank Morizio, Jr, Long Island Elite President.

During the partnership year, members of Long Island Elite will volunteer their time at Paws of War’s events where they will learn more about the organization, including the cost of training service animals, the challenges and issues related to abandoned and mistreated animals, animal adoption and rescue and the importance of veterans and first responders gathering to share their stories, comradery and mutual support.

Many veterans and first responders are struggling with PSTD and other mental health challenges. The support and funds that LIE will provide to us will go toward improving the lives of these heroes and at

the same time, find homes for so many dogs that need them,” said Robert Misseri, co-founder of Paws of War.

For over 20 years, Long Island Elite members have supported many not-forprofits. The organization has raised over $1 million dollars for charities and charity partners, including United Cerebral Palsy, ACLD, SIBSPlace, The Safe Center LI, New Ground and Long Island Alzheimer’s & Dementia Center. LIE members’ efforts have positively impacted thousands of lives on Long Island.
