Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Deer Park) is pleased to again join Long Island Cares and help it “rain food for cats and dogs” by hosting a pet food drive now through the end of May

Legislator Donnelly’s district office is serving as a drop-off location for the 12th Legislative Pet Food Drive where much-needed pet food and supplies will be collected to benefit Baxter’s Pet Pantry of Long Island Cares (www.licares. org). In previous years, constituents of the 17th Legislative District have

generously donated to this annual drive.

All donations go directly to Baxter’s Pantry. While 5 and 10 pound bags of dog and cat food, canned food, kitty litter and new pet toys are most needed, all pet nourishments are welcome including food for hamsters, fish, birds and ferrets.

Items may be dropped off at Legislator Donnelly’s District Office, located at 130 West Jericho Turnpike in Huntington Station, Monday through Thursday between the hours of 9 am and 4 pm until May 31. As per health code

When Things Don’t Go Your Way

As a real estate broker, I knew that the boom years of 2020 and 2021 wouldn’t last forever. For two years, houses for sale often had multiple offers before they were ever listed. Many homes went for above the asking price; sometimes well above the asking price.

But, as the saying goes, “All good things must come to an end.” Today, interest rates are more than double what they were a few years ago, home sellers aren’t leaving their 3% mortgage rates, and home buyers are waiting for more homes to hit the market and for interest rates to come down.

What do we do when business, and life, suddenly change directions? Some people put their heads in the sand and wait for everything to blow past them; others run to find a safe spot. What about the ones who stand

and face the obstacle in front of them? Often, they are the winners.

In business, when a good economy turns bad, companies will abandon their projects, lay off employees, and slash expenses. Smaller companies may go out of business because they didn’t prepare for the downturn, and they ran out of money. Look at the stores in town; that will tell you who planned

for a weaker economy and who failed to plan.

Tough times bring stress, anxiety, and tough decisions; they also bring opportunities for the people and businesses that prepare for them. Prices for many items will come down because companies have fewer customers buying their products (think of everything from home appliances to cars). Competitors will go out of business, and their customers will look for new places to spend their money. The same is true for vendors and suppliers.

What is your plan when things don’t go your way? Will you stand and fight while looking for opportunities, or will you wait for everything to blow over? I hope you decide to fight. We need stronger small businesses in our community, and we need our residents to support them along the way.

West Babylon JHS To Host St. Baldrick’s

Twenty-Eight Babylon Junior-Senior High School students earned accolades at this year’s Suffolk County DECA Competition. The students competed against others from across Suffolk County and performed well in categories such as Entrepreneurship, Travel & Tourism, Business Law & Ethics, Food Marketing, Automotive Marketing, Principles of Business Management and more!

DECA is an international organization with over 200,000 members across the United States and abroad. DECA strives to prepare students to succeed in the workplace and focuses on entrepreneurship and marketing topics and careers.

West Babylon Junior High School will host its fifth annual St. Baldrick’s event on March 10 from 6-8:30 p.m. There will be activities for the whole family, such as carnival games, face painting, hats for sale, food sales and raffles. All funds raised will

help reach the school’s goal for 2023 of $40,000 for a five-year total of $200,000 to help find a cure for children’s cancer.

Other activities include:

• Head shaving, live music and dance performances in Eagle Hall (auditorium)

The Dangers Of Dented Cans

Dented cans have long been a source of confusion and concern for shoppers. They may be discounted and seem like a good deal, but some of those dented cans may not be safe to eat. Damaged cans may be harboring food that contains botulism and other toxins. According to the United States Department of Agriculture Food Safety and Inspection Services, if a can of food has a small dent but is otherwise in good shape, the food should be safe to eat. However, deeply dented cans should be discarded. Dented cans of food that are safe will have smooth dents or dents that are not on the seams of the can. A person should avoid sharp dents, dents in the seam and dents where the seam and the can meet. In addition, if the can is bulging or swollen, it should be avoided. Dents in a seam can let in air and bacteria. Deep dents may have left pinholes, again where bacteria can enter.

The modern era is often referred to as the “Digital Age,” but mankind’s relationship with science and technology dates back much further than the 21st century. According to Wired.com, in 2006 scientists confirmed that a device discovered in 1900 amid the remains of an ancient Mediterranean shipwreck was an analog computer. The device, since dubbed the “Antikythera Computer,” was believed to help calculate astronomical cycles so sailors could more easily sail between Alexandria and Athens. The Antikythera Computer has been dated to sometime around the first century B.C., proving that man’s fascination with gadgets is an ancient one that has been paying dividends for millenia.

What is the 50-30-20 approach?

Effective financial strategies vary depending on which stage of life a person is in. For example, a recent college graduate working his or her first professional job will not have the same financial strategy as someone on the cusp of retirement. But one financial strategy that people of all ages can look to for guidance is the 50-30-20 approach. Popularized by United States Senator Elizabeth Warren, the 50-30-20 approach to financial planning can be a valuable resource for anyone trying to develop a budget. The approach is simple yet effective. Under the 5030-20 approach, income is allocated based on this breakdown:

· 50 percent of money

is spent on needs, including housing costs, health insurance, car payments, and groceries

· 30 percent of money is spent on wants, including hobbies, dining out and travel

· 20 percent of money is allocated to savings

Proponents of the 5030-20 approach note that calculations should be based on after-tax income, or what’s often referred to as “take-home pay.”

Professionals with steady

paychecks can easily determine their 50-3020 breakdowns by saving a month’s worth of pay stubs and establishing their monthly budget based on what’s coming in. The task can be trickier for self-employed or freelance workers, who may benefit from working with financial planners as they seek to create monthly budgets based on the 50-30-20 approach.

The National External Diploma Program offers adults 21 and over, the opportunity to receive credit for their life experiences, and earn a high school equivalency diploma without the challenge of taking lengthy timed examinations.

NEDP, is a competency based program for students who are unable to attend classes or who prefer to work at home. Robert Moses Club Promotes Reuse, Renew, Recycle

ROBERT MOSES CLUB PROMOTES REUSE, RENEW, RECYCLE - In the North Babylon School District, the Robert Moses Middle School EnvironmentalRecycling Club members spearheaded a project to recycle used sneakers. The club oversaw promoting the project, collecting the sneakers from the classes, counting the sneakers, and boxing up the sneakers to be given to Nike. Nike then grinds the sneakers down and turns them into different surfaces such as tracks, playgrounds, tennis courts and much more. Student-Artists Honored

STUDENT-ARTISTS HONORED - At the Feb. 16 North Babylon School District board of education meeting, several student-artists were recognized for their accomplishments. North Babylon High School students Matthew Holcombe, Emily Miccio and Peyton Silvestri were honored for being named All-County Artists. Silvestri was chosen as New York State Art Teacher’s Association artist of the month. Her artwork will be featured on New York State Youth Art Month website and social media platforms leading up to Youth Art Month in March. Her artwork was also chosen as the overall winner for the NYSATA YAM Flag contest. She won art materials from Blick art supplies. Canine Companions is a non-profit organization that enhances the lives of people with disabilities by providing highly trained service dogs and ongoing support to ensure quality partnerships. Independence shouldn’t be limited to those who look or live a certain way, so they are proud to provide their dogs and support services free of charge to recipients.

Clients come to Canine Companions because of their reputation, the quality of their dogs, the experience of their training sta and the desire to lead a life with greater independence. The organization is proud to have various chapters and training centers across our nation that operate o of these six core values:

Canine Companions uses Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers and crosses of these two breeds. Most of their dogs come from their selective breeding program, but occasionally donated puppies are accepted if they meet the strict qualification requirements. Their puppies are raised by volunteers who selflessly take them to classes that teach them basic obedience and house manners. When

the puppies are old enough to enter their professional training program, they head to one of their six regional training centers, located in Northern California, Southern California, Texas, Ohio, New York and Florida.

The organization typically places between 325 and 375 service dogs per year. Once a dog has completed professional training, it is ready to be matched with a person with disabilities. The match is made at one of their regional training centers during Team Training, a two-week group class.

During Team Training, students learn to manage the service dog’s behavior, to direct the dog to respond to commands it has learned and to assume responsibility for maintaining the health and well-being of the dog. Each dog can really make all the di erence in the life of its new partner. A Canine Companions service dog can not only open doors, pick up dropped items, turn on the lights and alert its partner of important sounds, but they can also increase confidence and independence.

Student-Athletes Commit To College Sports

Did You Know?

As more people work remotely, electricians and safety advocates are warning that various missteps may be putting people at unnecessary risk of fire and other unsafe conditions. Electrical equipment is necessary to run home offices just like it is traditional offices. Some people may find they have a shortage of electrical outlets to power their devices, and as a result they may turn to extension cords or power strips.

While that may seem like an easy fix, it is easy to inadvertently overload outlets and circuits by connecting more than one power strip or extension cord together in a practice known as “daisy chaining.”

According to the U.S. Office of Compliance, using a daisy chain in the workplace violates the National Electrical Code as well as the Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s rules. While it may not

break code at home, overloading any outlets increases risk for fire. The National Fire Protection Association indicates that more than 45,000 residential fires are started each year due to electrical failure and malfunction. Overload causes products to overheat, and that can spark fires in the power cords themselves or inside the wall where electrical lines are hidden.
