Town Of Babylon Thanked For Direct Support Program

Local Businesses And Organizations Appreciative Of Community-Saving ARPA Funds

Local small businesses and organizations recently came together at Babylon Town Hall to thank the Town of Babylon for its Direct Support Program, which distributed vital American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funding. The 267 grants from the program helped businesses stay afloat as they recovered economically from the pandemic and has allowed them to pursue postpandemic growth and prosperity. Over $8.3 million was issued to 192 small businesses, 68 nonprofit organizations and seven veterans groups, and 98 of the recipients are minority- and womenowned businesses.

“Our small businesses place a great deal on the line to drive our local economy,” said Chairman of the Town of Babylon Small Business Committee Councilman Anthony Manetta. “Therefore, it was the Town of Babylon’s goal for our businesses and nonprofits not just to survive but to thrive postpandemic as well.”

Several business owners testified to the significant impact the program had in maintaining their businesses and, in turn, supporting economic progress and hope for the community. “Many of us had to close our doors for months at a time, which had a significant impact on our businesses and personal finances,” said CBC Wireless owner and grant recipient Reggie Mays. “I do not think we would have survived without the program’s funds.” His Wyandanch business that has been opened since 1995 utilized the money it received to address pandemic-based revenue loss.

“I feel that this year will be a better year for all of us,” said Dalisa Pizza owner and grant recipient Frances Dalisa in her appreciation for the funds. The North Babylon restaurant,

previously in Deer Park, has been a local staple for 50 years and used the grant money it was awarded to pay bills and handle rising costs.

Veterans organizations were also deeply grateful for the funds they received, with John Simpkins of Martin Kessler Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States Post 2912 commending the Town on behalf of the contingency. Chair of the Town of Babylon Veterans Advisory Council and former veteran Councilman DuWayne Gregory expressed the importance of including veterans groups in the Direct Support Program, for they provide countless services and programs to the community and help a population that has selflessly sacrificed a great deal for this country.

The Town of Babylon also utilized ARPA funds to make significant investments in public safety through grants to various municipalities and fire

departments to purchase life-saving equipment. Using the allocated funds, the Wyandanch Fire Department obtained a new ladder truck, the Lindenhurst and West Babylon Fire Departments received LUCAS devices— which assist with the performance of CPR— and the Copiague Fire Department will soon be acquiring three AEDs. In addition, Babylon Village will be using the funds to purchase an ambulance.

Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Shaffer expressed his sincere gratitude to those who assisted him in organizing the profoundly impactful program, as well as to all of the recipients for their dedication and contributions to the community. The supervisor, as well as many of the recipients, also delivered a special message of appreciation for Viscel Moore, whose leadership and years of experience made the program possible.

The Charity of the Month for February is The Corporate Source

Based in Garden City, observing 27 years of service, The Corporate Source (TCS) has a presence throughout the Greater New York Metro Region, along with the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico. They create value for individuals with disabilities by providing well paying jobs along with the necessary training, job coaching and support to be successful in the workplace. TCS creates value to companies and organizations by providing important outsourcing services and by increasing diversity at these sites.

With nearly 400 employees, this organization provides services such as janitorial, maintenance, call center services, mail room and courier, and kennel services to federal, state and public organizations. Recently, TCS moved into another area o ering tremendous growth potential for individuals with disabilities - Information Technology (IT).

The Bureau of Labor Statistics has projected a 12 percent growth rate in the IT field between 2018 and 2028, which is much faster than the average for all occupations. In December 2022, employers across the United States listed over 18,000 open positions for IT support specialists, according to CompTIA’s monthly “Tech Jobs Report.” This expressed demand on the part of potential employers is echoed by the disability community, which has expressed tremendous interest in the IT sector.

TCS has partnered in a key initiative with CompTIA to train and certify people with disabilities for lucrative positions in the IT field. The “TCS IT Training and A+ Certification Program” is a comprehensive 13 week program with instruction provided virtually with individualized support for program participants that is provided by TCS’ Vocational Rehabilitation unit. The structure of the training is adapted to meet the needs and learning

styles of the participants. At the conclusion of the virtual classroom, instruction students will have the opportunity to earn two professional certifications – CompTIA IT Fundamentals, an introduction to basic IT knowledge and skills, and CompTIA A+, the industry standard for establishing a career in IT. The objective is to teach marketable IT skills, along with appropriate work behaviors, to ensure that graduates will be qualified for jobs such as: help desk technicians, desktop support people and field technicians who assist with hardware and equipment setup.

At their 2022 Long Island SummIT Awards Dinner, The Long Island Software & Technology Network recognized TCS for its innovative e orts and leadership to recruit people with disabilities to fulfill IT sector jobs.

On February 28, 2023, the second class coming through the TCS IT Training & Certification Program will be graduating. These graduates who are mainly from Nassau and Su olk counties are eager to begin their careers!

One of the initial graduates, Ayisat, expressed that she was thrilled to take advantage of this opportunity to further her career. She had been working for TCS as a Telephone Operator for the Veterans Administration Hospital in Manhattan when she was approached by her manager about the opportunity to participate in the IT Training Program. After successfully completing the program and obtaining her certifications, Ayisat secured a job as a Help Desk Technician. She is now working remotely and excited about her career potential.

Seniors Present Culminating Projects For Seal Of Civic Readiness

Approximately 20 seniors presented their civic project in front of a panel who will determine if their project receives credit toward the Seal of Civic Readiness.
