How To Plan A Winter Wedding

W eddings take winter to account for place throughout the the slow season. And year, but some months have traditionally proven more popular times of year for happy couples to tie the knot.

Summer was long known as the most popular season for weddings, but that trend has shifted in recent years. According to the 2020 WeddingWire Newlywed Report, 36 percent of couples get married in the fall, making autumn the most popular time to say “I do.”

Though October and September are the two most popular months to marry, budget-conscious couples may want to consider getting married in winter. December, January and February are the least popular wedding months, but the experts at WeddingWire note that getting married during the slow season has its benefits.

Vendors, including wedding planners and venues, may offer their services and facilities at discounted prices in

not be able to get guestfriendly rates on hotel rooms, and some guests may already have plans to visit family. In addition to the December holidays, avoid the first weekend in February. That’s Super Bowl weekend, and many people may be reluctant to travel on the day of the big game.

• Research local weather.

It’s impossible to predict the weather, but savvy couples can research local weather in the town or city where they’re getting married to determine when is the most travel-friendly month to host their weddings. Some regions get heavy snowfall in January, while others may be more susceptible to late winter snowstorms.

Couples with a lot of out-of-town guests should choose a winter weekend where snowfall is unlikely so guests don’t have to endure travel delays on their way to and from the wedding.

• Purchase wedding insurance.

Wedding insurance is a wise investment for every couple, but it can be especially valuable for couples tying the knot in winter. Each policy is different, but wedding insurance policies should protect couples’ investments if storms force local officials to declare a state of emergency that prohibits travel. Make sure the policy covers both cancellations and postponements.

Winter weddings can help couples save money.

Planning such affairs may require paying attention to details that would not garner much consideration during other times of year.

Millie is a mixed breed dog overseas that was rescued

by Sergeant Tiann. The soldier has created a long lasting relationship with the dog and is desperate to bring her back to the U.S. with her, now that her deployment is over. She has reached out to Guardians of Rescue for their assistance in helping to make the relocation happen, and they need donations from the public in order to make it happen.

“We could make this a reality, but we need financial support from the community,” explains Robert Misseri, president of Guardians of Rescue, an animal rescue organization.

“There are a lot of logistics and people that have to come together to make this happen and it’s expensive.

Let’s all work together to give Sgt Tiann this wonderful gift of ending a tough year on a high note and going into a new year with a smile.”

Sergeant Tiann found Millie after she had given birth and was nursing.

During that time, someone came along and took all the puppies from the mother, leaving her in a vulnerable position. Sergeant Tiann knew that this would leave the dog in danger, so she wanted to do what she could to help her.

Doing all she could for Millie, the two of them formed a relationship based on love and trust. She knows that if she cannot get Millie back to the states to live with her, she will once

Great South Bay YMCA Helps Local Families Every holiday season, the Great South Bay YMCA orchestrates their Adopt-AFamily initiative to provide support to local families in need. But in early December 2020 as COVID-19 cases surged and unemployment rates reached recordbreaking highs, countless local families grew more concerned with their daily living expenses rather than fulfilling their traditional rituals of holiday dinner and gift exchanges. The “spirit of giving” became a touchstone in the early months of the pandemic and the Great South Bay YMCA tapped into their nearly thirty years of fundraising for the Y’s cause-driven mission, the dedication of their leadership team, and the generosity of its community to plan their efforts in new and different ways knowing this year would be like no other.

To commence the AdoptA-Family initiative, the Great South Bay YMCA identified local families in need, in collaboration with the school districts they serve for Before & After School programs, volunteer leaders, Y staff and members, and corporate and foundation partners to raise funds for the holiday giving season. A portion of the financial donations made to the YMCA Annual Campaign allowed the Y to do holiday shopping to provide gifts and food on the “wish list” to

children and parents alike, wrap the gifts, and deliver to the families. Some generous donors also opted to do their own shopping and deliver wrapped gifts or gift cards to the Y for distribution.

“The Y is able to work directly with low-income families in our community to identify the families’ specific needs and wants.

We gather information on the children; their interests, clothing sizes, and wishes for holiday gifts. We learn what the parents or guardians’ needs are such as helping with their rent or putting food on the table for dinner”, says Bob Pettersen, Executive Director at the Great South Bay YMCA. He adds, “We try and give the kids something special for Christmas morning and give support to parents who under such stress during the holidays. They want to give their children the best but are so overwhelmed with bills and other various challenges. In 2020, the need to help our neighbors was simply greater than ever.”

More than $42,000 was raised in December alone through the Great South Bay YMCA’s Annual Campaign to adopt twenty local families for this holiday season, and provide families with access to Y programs and services through scholarships.

With coronavirus upending life, the Great South Bay Y focused on providing relief for children of essential workers, families with children who were remote learning, and families experiencing tremendous financial hardships. In addition to the gift cards, wrapped donated toys, and food relief, the Y donated Chromebooks to families who did not have the resources needed for their children in a virtual learning environment due to the pandemic.

A recipient of the AdoptA-Family initiative said, “I just needed a break. Life has been so hard this year with COVID. I can’t keep up. These generous gifts brought me relief, and more importantly, joy to my children, because they really needed it this year. I can’t thank the Y enough for all the work being done to help us.”

Like individuals, businesses and non-profits across Long Island have been greatly impacted by the crisis, yet the Y’s mission of nurturing youth development, fostering healthy living, and inspiring social responsibility have pulled at the heartstrings of the Great South Bay YMCA’s committed volunteer leaders, partners and donors more than ever. “With funds raised through the Annual A DELIGHTED LOCAL RECIPIENT - A delighted local Campaign, the Y can provide recipient of Christmas gifts for the 2020 holiday season diverse, life-enriching from Great South Bay YMCA’s Adopt-A-Family initiative. programs to all, regardless

With fundraising being a critical lifeline needed to help the YMCA stay afloat, donors and partners of the Y worked even harder this year to keep the momentum going for months when donor fatigue would historically be setting in. Local businesses, like the Bondy family-owned Sir Speedy in Bay Shore, donated resources to help the Great South Bay YMCA reach further into the community through their networks to ensure the Y could remain a beacon of hope even during a life-altering pandemic. The Great South Bay YMCA 2020 Annual Campaign and the Adopt-A-Family initiative were made possible by partners such as the Bondy Family and Sir Speedy Bay Shore, LIAM Foundation, Ganzi Family Foundation, Sacco Foundation, Bay Shore Lions Club, Newins Ford, The Kussmail Foundation, Harbour Club and many others that contributed to these efforts.

Precautions That Can Keep Wedding Guests Safe During The Pandemic

he outbreak of the novel coronavirus that began in the winter of 2019-20 and was ultimately declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization put many couples’wedding plans in peril. In an effort to stop the spread of the virus and protect those most vulnerable to it, governments across the globe placed restrictions on social gatherings, including weddings.

Those restrictions prompted some couples to postpone their nuptials until 2021, while others tied the knot at considerably smaller ceremonies than they initially planned for.

Couples planning to tie the knot in the months ahead can still do so, but the WHO recommends they take certain precautions as they organize their ceremonies and receptions.

• Confirm local regulations. Restrictions related to COVID-19 differ greatly by region.

Areas that were not hit hard by the virus may not have as many restrictions in place as those that were devastated by the outbreak. In addition, cities or regions whose responses to the virus have been successful may have relaxed restrictions more than areas that are still struggling.

The WHO notes the importance of checking local guidelines prior to planning an event, and that’s especially important for couples who hope to get married in towns or cities where they do not currently reside.

• Keep guests up to date about precautions.

Include detailed information about the safety measures that will be implemented during the wedding on your wedding website. Insert a card detailing this information into your invitation envelopes as well so all guests know what to expect when they accept the invitation.

In addition, remind guests of the safety

precautions throughout the ceremony.

• Provide sanitary supplies. Make sure hand sanitizer, soap, water, and masks are readily available for all guests.

Social distance markers also can be placed on the ground throughout the venue to make it easy for guests to stay six feet apart from one another.

• Choose an outdoor venue. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that the COVID-19 virus spreads very easily through person-to-person contact and that the risk of spreading the virus is greater when spending time indoors. Couples can mitigate some of that risk by tying the knot outdoors and then hosting an outdoor reception where tables are kept at least six feet apart.

Weddings will be different until the world puts COVID-19 in its rearview mirror. In the meantime, it’s up to happy couples to keep their guests safe come the big day.

The Charity of the Month for January is

Angels of Long Island is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization ran by Debbie and Brittany, a mother and daughter duo.

They turned a small Facebook group into a fast growing non-profit organization that helps countless Long Islanders in need.

Their non-profit continued to grow so much so that Debbie and Brittany decided to open up a storefront location in Patchogue called Angels of Long Island.

Their slogan Neighbors helping neighbors is a great reflection of what this thriving thrift store/boutique/donation center does. “We work so hard to keep our store clean and beautiful so that all of our customers who walk through our doors feels a sense of dignity and respect shopping at our store,” says Debbie. “We are not like your average thrift store! We carry designer brands and offer a unique experience.”

The mission of this non-profit is to assist and advocate for people in our Long Island community who are in need of assistance. Their goal is to empower people to overcome poverty and live prosperous lives. They truly provide a wide range of services and goods to people in crisis, however anyone can come shop at their Patchogue store, which has recently expanded, located at 350-23 East Main Street.

The store is proud to take many types of donations. They now accept bottle and can donations every Monday-Saturday from 9AM-3PM, where you can simply pull up curbside, pop your trunk and a team member will take the donations for you.

All bottles and cans must be marked New York state deposit and no broken glass bottles are able to be accepted. Please remember to separate glass items from plastic items before you donate them.

Pickups at your residence are available for large quantities of recyclables.

Additionally, they accept other donations, such as new or gently used clothing, housewares, home decor and

furniture.

Angels of Long Island will be closing next month and re-opening March 1st. If you are interested in donating to or volunteering with this organizaiton, you can do so until the last day of January or when they reopen in March.

The NY State government has put detailed guidelines in place for all businesses, not just veterinarians. For example, medical facilities are required to screen patients before admitting them into the facility.

Although that creates a lot of extra work for our staff, we are committed to complying with the NY State safety guidelines during the COVID-19 crisis, and to protect our client’s health and safety. *Exceptions can be made in situations like euthanasia

Restrictions are lifted on other things.

By July 2020, restrictions like curbside check-in have helped reduce the number of people diagnosed with COVID-19 in New York State down from over 10,000 a day to below 1,000. At the same time we have seen infections rise dramatically in other states who had fewer restrictions.

Theater Students Connect With Peers North Babylon High School theater and film students recently attended two virtual conferences where they came together with likeminded individuals, despite the obstacles and challenges that have surfaced due to COVID-19.

On Jan. 8-9, North Babylon High School sophomore and juniors

joined their peers from across New York State to participate in the New York State Theatre Education Association’s 24th annual “Student Conference” — its first-ever conference delivered in a fully remote platform.

Students participated in workshops and other theaterrelated activities presented

by well-known and respected artists in the Broadway theatre community, including famed lighting designer, Ken Posner; Patti Murin, the originator of the role of Princess Anna in Disney’s “Frozen;” and actor/playwright, John Cariani. The keynote address was given by stage, film and television actor, David

Harbour.

In a press release, NYSTEA wrote about the importance of theater as a component of pre-K-12 education. “Studying theatre in schools develops abilities needed in the 21st century, including critical thinking, problem solving skills, applications in technology, social responsibility and creativity.”

On Jan. 14, theater and film students at North Babylon High School also attended the eighth annual “Stage the Change Virtual

Conference,” featuring guest speaker and award-winning playwright, Dominique Morisseau.

The conference aims to connect students with industry professionals, who are also human rights activists, to empower them to become global citizens through creativity and performance.

This year, students participated in theater, film and dance workshops, attended panels led by professional artists and watched student

performances addressing social justice issues in today’s society.

According to the Stage the Change website, “We are living in a time like no other.

The arts-world remains at intermission, and holding its breath. The County is divided more than ever before. Your arts voices are critical…

Despite these painful times, we know that by unifying and raising our voices, we will emerge stronger and better together.”

low as 5 percent for new customers. Customer retention strategies like offering superior customer service and seeking input from customers can help small businesses generate more repeat customers, which can greatly improve their chances for long-term success.

Wedding Flowers

While flowers certainly add beauty and a wonderful aroma to wedding ceremonies and receptions, there are other reasons behind their inclusion in such festivities. In ancient Rome, brides carried or wore flower garlands because the Romans believed flowers signified hope, fertility and new beginnings. In the Middle Ages, brides did not carry flowers, but rather strong-smelling spices and herbs. The rationale was that the herbs and spices would drive away bad luck and evil spirits.

Flowers also served another practical purpose. In eras when bathing was a luxury, different flowers and herbs helped mask body odors. It wasn’t until the Victorian era, when flowers were used to symbolize romantic love, that they became part of wedding ceremonies, according to Modern Weddings magazine.
