Call To Artists: The Art of Carnaval

BACCA (Babylon Citizens Council on the Arts), Harper Bella, and Jose Tutiven - the Artists Create Change project and partnership through CRNY - invite artists to participate in “The Art of Carnaval,” the opening event of an ongoing project celebrating art forms that are part of global carnival festivals. Five artists will be chosen to have their work displayed at the BACCA Arts Center, 149 N. Wellwood Avenue, Lindenhurst, NY, at the opening event and celebration on Tuesday, February 21, 2023 and in the Arts Center display window from February 21st through March 31, 2023. The jurors will also present a virtual exhibition of works curated from the entries received (in addition to the five selected for the opening event), which will be available to view from February 22nd through May 1, 2023.

The deadline to submit work is Sunday, February 5, 2023 at 11:59PM EST. There is no entry fee; submissions are free to all. The jurors are Harper Bella and Jose Tutiven. For entry information visit https://www.babylonarts. org/art-of-carnaval .

The Charity of the Month for January is Pal-O-Mine Equestrian

From its inception in 1995, Pal-OMine Equestrian has o ered unprecedented equine assistance programs to individuals with disabilities and other vulnerable populations. Today, as a leader in the industry, this non-profit organization continues to foster growth, learning and healing in 400 students weekly through the power of the horse.

To continue to empower, educate and enrich the community around us, Pal-O-Mine Equestrian has embarked on an Expansion Campaign. This “Race We Will Win” campaign will provide their organization with building renovations, new paddocks and other essentials for their herd, along with additional tools to further enhance their programs.

Looking to get involved? The organization will be o ering various events throughout 2023, some of which are noted below.

•February 15th - 3 month Virtual Hay Drive Fundraiser begins

•May 3rd through May 7th - Annual J-STEP Spring Craft Fair

•May 4th - Stable Spirits Art Show and Auction

Additionally, they are actively looking for new volunteers that are willing to lend a helping hand. “Volunteers are the backbone of PalO-Mine,” said Lisa. “Our mission would not be fulfilled and our work would not be possible without the dedication and e orts of our volunteer team where there is one goal…to facilitate growth, learning and healing through the use of our equine partners in an emotionally and physically safe environment.”

Volunteers at Pal-O-Mine Equestrian can help in the following ways:

•Assist with barn chores, such as cleaning tack and mucking stalls

•Attend and assist with their events

All volunteers must be at least 16 years of age, attend a volunteer orientation (orientations are held every month) and complete a minimum of 8 hours of training. “We want to make sure all our volunteers are fully trained and feel ready to be a part of our team. We appreciate each and every person who gives their time and believes in our mission.”

Elderly Army Veteran Has Wish For Restaurant Gift Cards Granted

Ron Matonti, a resident of Medford, New York, had his wish for restaurant gift cards granted, thanks to the Long Island chapter of national nonprofit Twilight Wish Foundation. Matonti is an Army veteran who has congenital heart failure and is homebound. Because of this, he relies mostly on canned foods that are delivered to him from a local food pantry. His wish is to receive restaurant and food delivery gift cards so that he can order fresh food instead of just eating canned foods.

Matonti was nominated by Melanie Corinne, the project coordinator for the Joseph Dwyer Peer Support Project in Suffolk County. Long Island Chapter Director James Ciervo and Corinne delivered the gift card basket to Matonti on Friday, December 17th at his Medford home.

Twilight Wish Foundation is a nonprofit charitable organization whose mission is to honor and enrich the lives of seniors through intergenerational Twilight

Wish celebrations. Since its founding in 2003, Twilight Wish has granted over 4,810 individual wishes to seniors throughout the U.S. Twilight Wish grants wishes to seniors who are 65 and older or a permanent resident of a nursing home and earn less than 200% of poverty level. Past President Chief Peter McArdle Recognized

The Town of Babylon recently congratulated past President of the Fire Chiefs Association Peter McArdle for his many years of service.

Chief Peter McArdle is a 39-year West Babylon Volunteer Fire Department member. He served as Lieutenant and Captain of Rendezvous Truck Company #4, a member of the Chief’s Office from 2008 through 2016, and the Fire Chief’s Association

Executive Board from 2017 to 2022. In his term as President, Chief McArdle played an instrumental role in guiding the Town of Babylon Fire Departments and local officials through the response to the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Supervisor Schaffer said, “Whether it was Superstorm Sandy or the Covid-19 pandemic, Chief McArdle was a calm voice of reassurance that we will get through this in the

most professional way.” Councilman and Public Safety Chairman Terence McSweeney added “Chief McArdle’s knowledge and professionalism was a key part of getting through some of the most challenging times as a first responder. Chief McArdle is through and through a true public servant and we are forever grateful for his commitment to the Town of Babylon community.”

Local Foundation, Big Mission

The Chloe Belle Foundation is a local non-profit organization started by the family of Chloe. Chloe was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia at the age of 25. She underwent countless treatments, but unfortunately the cancer only progressed. It eventually invaded her spine and left her paralyzed and in immense pain. Thirteen months later, Chloe passed away at home beside her family.

Chloe left a huge impact on those around her, she prioritized the happiness of others and brought joy wherever she went. The Lindberg Family started this foundation as a way to honor Chloe and continue her work here on earth. The mission of the Chloe Belle Foundation is to support children and young adults who have also been diagnosed with cancer, and offer them the same joy and light that Chloe herself was.

Remi Lindberg, President of The Chloe Belle Foundation said, “We have big goals for the foundation. I want Chloe to live on forever. She deserves

that. Most importantly, I want to bring Chloe’s kindness and love to the world on a large scale.”

The Chloe Belle Foundation will begin selling merchandise starting this February to benefit the foundation. They also will be hosting their annual toy drive in the spring, and will have more information on the event soon.

They will be collaborating with Mario’s Pizzeria in East Northport on February 21, 2023. When customers order on that day and mention The Chloe Belle Foundation, their foundation will receive 20% from the pre-tax sale.

Bethpage Air Show At Jones Beach Taking Place May 27-28,

Bethpage Federal Credit Union, New York State’s largest credit union, and the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, are pleased to announce that the United States Air Force Thunderbirds will headline the 19th Annual Bethpage Air Show at Jones Beach taking place on Saturday, May 27,

2023 and Sunday, May 28, 2023. This will be the demonstration team’s 9th performance at the Bethpage Air Show.

It was announced at the annual International Council of Air Shows (ICAS) Convention yesterday that the United States Army Golden Knights Parachute Team and the United States Marine Corps

F35B Lighting II will be performing, along with the world famous Skytpers, Long Island’s David Windmiller and Mike Goulian, North America’s most decorated aerobatic pilot.

“Last year, we were very grateful that the Thunderbirds changed their schedule to perform for us on Memorial Day, after the Saturday

and Sunday weekend shows were rained out,” said George Gorman, Regional Director, New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation. “Suffice to say, we couldn’t be happier to welcome the team back to Long Island for our 2023 show!”

“Let’s Be Blunt” Cannabis Safety Awareness Campaign Brings Attention To Responsible Cannabis Use For Long Islanders

To kick off their collaborative cannabis safety awareness campaign entitled “Let’s Be Blunt,” Partnering in Action and Change for Tomorrow (PACT) and Town of Babylon Cares – two leading community prevention coalitions based on Long Island – held a press conference on January 10, 2023 in Amityville, New York to announce the new outreach and educational campaign.

As a society, keeping our youth, families and community members safe is of paramount importance. Now that cannabis is legal for recreational adult use and licensed sale in New York State for those 21 years of age or older, Nassau Countybased PACT and Suffolk County-based Town of Babylon Cares have banded together to provide education and awareness about properly securing cannabis and not driving while under the influence.

Bird Walk At Point Lookout Town Park And Lido Preserve

Join the South Shore Audubon Society on a bird walk on Sunday, January 29, starting at 9 AM, at Point Lookout Town Park and Lido Preserve afterwards.

The group will meet in the southeast corner of the large parking lot on the south side of the park. We will walk east along the

beach toward Jones Inlet. After returning to the parking lot, we will drive west on Lido Boulevard to Lido Beach Passive Nature Preserve on the north side of Lido Boulevard.

Rain or snow will cancel the bird walk.

All are welcome. Walk leaders and other birders and nature enthusiasts

will be happy to share their knowledge and experience with you. The bird walk is free of charge. Bring binoculars .
