North Bellmore Accepting Applications For 2024-25 Pre-K Lottery

The North Bellmore School District is accepting applications for its Universal PreKindergarten program for the 2024-2025 school year. While the district recently received expanded grant funds and anticipates having a spot for all applicants, a lottery will still be held to assign placements. The program is contingent upon state funding. Children who will be 4 years old by Dec. 1, 2024, and will be eligible to enter kindergarten in September 2025, may participate in the lottery. The program is administered by the North Bellmore School District and is provided by community-based preschools. It is funded by the New York State Education Department through a UPK grant so

there is no cost to families. The district anticipates hosting both half-day and full-day programs. The half-day program is offered two and a half hours per day, five days a week, and the full-day program is offered five hours per day, five days a week. Both programs will follow the North Bellmore school calendar. Children are expected to attend every day. Parents cannot choose the school location and transportation is not provided. The deadline for applications is Friday, Feb. 16. UPK applications are available online at www. northbellmoreschools.org, and at each elementary building from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on school days. For more information, contact the Curriculum Office at (516) 992-3000, ext. 3009.

Bruce Blakeman and Town of Hempstead Supervisor Donald Clavin. “This is a bipartisan effort between our town, county, state and federal levels of government,” declared Supervisor Schaffer. “By working together, we will be able to get the state and federal government to assist us in finding a temporary solution to enjoy the summer of 2024, as well as a long-term solution because mother nature will continue to act.” The sand at Overlook Beach was last replaced by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers a decade ago, prompting vulnerability to recent storms. The beach pavilion and playground are currently in danger of being washed out to sea as a result of the mean high tide of Overlook Beach now existing within 120 feet of

the structures. In order to address the urgency of the situation, a bipartisan coalition of federal, state and local officials is collaborating to demand action be taken to mitigate the harmful erosion of Overlook Beach, as well as the rest of Long Island’s South Shore. “Repeated storms have battered Long Island’s shore, and Babylon Town, Suffolk County and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation have requested federal aid,” said Senator Schumer. “I will continue pushing the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to approve and commence emergency rehabilitation projects protecting Long Island’s South Shore as soon as possible, including those on Fire Island and on the eastern end of Jones Beach Island that protect

critical infrastructure, public facilities, businesses and private homes.” “I am profoundly concerned about the increasingly severe beach erosion and flooding caused by recent storms on Long Island’s South Shore. I am working closely with our local leaders to devise a comprehensive solution that will restore our beaches and fortify our vulnerable coastlines,” said Senator Gillibrand. “Restoring this shoreline is one of my top priorities, and I will continue advocating for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to collaborate with Suffolk County and the Town of Babylon and for the swift approval of the pending emergency shoreline replenishment request.” “The protection and preservation of our coastline demands

immediate attention, and when we all work together in a bipartisan way, the residents of our communities benefit the most,” said County Executive Romaine. “I am urging the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to collaborate with our local efforts in implementing robust solutions to ensure the longevity and resilience of Overlook Beach. We must do all we can to combat erosion and secure the future of our coastline.” Thousands of Town of Babylon residents enjoy Overlook Beach each year. Supervisor Schaffer’s call to action seeks to maintain Long Islanders’ ability to do so for years to come. “Beaches are a part of Long Island’s history and culture and a key reason for why we live here,” said Legislator McCaffrey. “Those of us at the county

level are committed to working with our partners in town, state and federal government to make sure that we receive the necessary resources to address this emergency.” “All of Long Island is coming together to send a strong message to Washington, D.C.,” said Supervisor Saladino. “We know the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has expertise, but we are tired of hearing that another study and project is needed. We are losing our beaches and need the help now. Today, we unite as Republicans and Democrats, people from all walks of life. We are all Long Islanders, and this is a tremendous part of our culture and our life here. Every grain of sand also helps protect our roadways from damage.” NORTH BABYLON - SOUTH BAY’S NEIGHBOR NEWSPAPERS - WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 24, 2024 • WWW.LONGISLANDMEDIAGROUP.COM

In light of the devastating impact recent storms have had on Overlook Beach, Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer held a press conference on Friday, January 12 to emphasize the gravity of this situation of urge the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to include the beach in its upcoming beach erosion control dredging project. Supervisor Schaffer and Babylon Town Board members were joined at the press conference with support from Suffolk County Legislator Kevin McCaffrey, Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the offices of U.S. Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer, U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, U.S. Congressman Andrew Garbarino, Suffolk County Executive Ed Romaine, Nassau County Executive

BHS Students Attend Virtual Enterprise Competition Babylon Junior-Senior High School’s virtual enterprise students received hands-on business experience at the Virtual Enterprises Long Island Business Plan Competition

and Trade Show held on January 11 at Long Island University. Twenty-five Babylon students attended this annual conference, which gave them the opportunity

to compete in a variety of business-related categories including sales materials, booth design, sales pitch and website design. The students also pitched their business plan, which

included an executive summary of their firm— Attire Wire—to a panel of judges. In all, the students made over $75,000 in virtual sales to other firms in attendance at the

conference. The experience gave them the opportunity to network with other Long Island virtual enterprise students, virtual enterprise adult supervisors and LIU

professors and staff. It was a valuable opportunity for the Babylon students to learn first-hand about the ins-and-outs of business deals and networking in a simulated setting.

The Babylon Board of Education honored members of the Babylon Strong volunteer group at its January meeting for the work the group has done helping and empowering the wider Babylon community. Babylon Strong is a grassroots volunteer organization that formed during the Covid-19 crisis to help neighbors in need. The volunteers work to

provide social-emotional, financial and food support for community members who may be facing a crisis. They do this through fundraising, food collections, community mobilization and also spending time with those who might be ailing. Babylon Strong executive board members Cathryn McAleavey, Melissa Muma, Kara Darrell, Ingrid Archaga, Shvonne

Romanitch and Jennifer Parendo were present to receive the recognition for their efforts. “These volunteers stepped up during a difficult time to help their neighbors in need,” said Superintendent of Schools Carisa Manza. “They are truly the definition of Babylon Strong, and we wanted to recognize them for their continued commitment to the Babylon community.”

Donating Blood The foods a person eats before attempting to donate blood could affect whether or not he or she is allowed to donate. According to the American Red Cross, its staff members routinely check the

level of hemoglobin in donors’ blood and platelets before they accept donations. Hemoglobin is a protein in the body that contains iron and gives blood its distinctive red color. Hemoglobin plays a vital role in human

health, carrying oxygen from the lungs to nourish all of the tissues in the body. Hemoglobin levels are checked using fingersticks, and if hemoglobin levels are low, then donors will be asked to wait to donate

until their levels return to normal. So what does food have to do with hemoglobin? Iron is a part of hemoglobin and found in many of the foods a person eats. Iron helps people maintain their strength and

energy, and it’s also necessary to help the body make new blood cells to replace the ones that are lost through blood donations. The Red Cross encourages prospective donors to eat healthy foods that are rich in

iron and high in vitamin C, as doing so can increase their chances of being accepted as blood donors and can aid in their recoveries after donating.

and our spiritual selves. Let’s find a balance between work and personal life that makes sense for each of us. Let’s go outside for walks when the weather permits and follow a balanced meal plan. Remember, a sound mind in a sound body is the ideal engine for the journey through 2024. Finally, let’s not forget the power of community and relationships. In a digital age where most meetings are behind computer screens, let’s try for more real-life get togethers. I loved going to local Chamber meetings, fundraisers, and meeting local business owners last year. I have promised myself to do this more in 2024. Each day is an opportunity to find adventure, growth, and happiness, both in our professional and personal lives. Let this year be the one where we live fully, embracing every twist and turn on the exciting highway of life.

By JoAnn Cilla “Get your motor runnin’, head out on the highway, looking for adventure in whatever comes our way.” This song, “Born to Be Wild” by Steppenwolf, was on the radio this morning. It sounded like the perfect introduction to 2024. This year is our opportunity to fully embrace “whatever comes our way.” We need to put the pedal to the metal and speed towards success and fulfillment… whatever that looks like in business and in our personal lives. The business world in 2024 is rapidly evolving, driven by technology, and changing consumer behaviors. If you want the checkered flag this year, you need to remember one word: innovation. This doesn’t mean investing in every new gadget or trend. It’s more about making small, consistent improvements while being open to change. For local business owners,
