In a small town in Georgia, where they have no animal services available, a dog that has been named Bam Bam was found badly injured.

He appeared to have been hit by a car and was left without medical care. Bam Bam sustained injuries that have left him paralyzed, but Guardians of Rescue

have stepped up to take on the challenge of getting him the medical assistance that he needs to walk once again. They are asking for people in the community to chip in to help make it happen.

“This poor dog was basically left to die after what looks like being hit by a car,” explains Robert Misseri, president of Guardians of Rescue, an animal rescue organization. “He struggles to try and move even the slightest bit and it’s heartbreaking to watch.

We know that we can help him, but to do so we need the help of compassionate people in the community.”

Guardians of Rescue have started a medical fund where people can donate to help raise the money necessary to care for Bam Bam. He was found alone and struggling

During the medical exam, the MRI showed that Bam Bam sustained nerve damage. Even with that, Guardians of Rescue is optimistic that with the right medical care the dog will be able to walk again. He will need costly treatment to help him reach that point, but the signs are there that he will be able to recover with the right care.

During this pandemic, Angels of Long Island is short staffed and looking for help. Their store is cleaned every morning and masks are required there. Lastly, every Saturday until further notice, Angels of Long Island will team up with Carroll’s Kitchen, another Long Island based non-profit. Anyone is welcome to come and let a team member know how many dinners you need. The meals are distributed via curbside pickup. “So many people are out of work,” says Debbie. “If we can help their budget a ltitle by providing a meal for their family, it thrills me!”

Angels of Long Island is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization ran by Debbie and Brittany, a mother and daughter duo.

They turned a small Facebook group into a fast growing non-profit organization that helps countless Long Islanders in need.

Their non-profit continued to grow so much so that Debbie and Brittany decided to open up a storefront location in Patchogue called Angels of Long Island.

Their slogan Neighbors helping neighbors is a great reflection of what this thriving thrift store/boutique/donation center does. “We work so hard to keep our store clean and beautiful so that all of our customers who walk through our doors feels a sense of dignity and respect shopping at our store,” says Debbie. “We are not like your average thrift store! We carry designer brands and offer a unique experience.”

The mission of this non-profit is to assist and advocate for people in our Long Island community who are in need of assistance. Their goal is to empower people to overcome poverty and live prosperous lives. They truly provide a wide range of services and goods to people in crisis, however anyone can come shop at their Patchogue store, which has recently expanded, located at 350-23 East Main Street.

The store is proud to take many types of donations. They now accept bottle and can donations every Monday-Saturday from 9AM-3PM, where you can simply pull up curbside, pop your trunk and a team member will take the donations for you.

All bottles and cans must be marked New York state deposit and no broken glass bottles are able to be accepted. Please remember to separate glass items from plastic items before you donate them.

Pickups at your residence are available for large quantities of recyclables.

The NY State government has put detailed guidelines in place for all businesses, not just veterinarians. For example, medical facilities are required to screen patients before admitting them into the facility.

Although that creates a lot of extra work for our staff, we are committed to complying with the NY State safety guidelines during the COVID-19 crisis, and to protect our client’s health and safety. *Exceptions can be made in situations like euthanasia

Recovered COVID-19 Patients Battling Long-Term Health Effects

COVID-19 has impacted tens of thousands of Long Islanders, and many who have recovered from the virus are now combatting a variety of lingering health issues as a result.

Known as “long-haulers” these individuals are living with the chronic effects of the virus that can include organ damage, poor lung function, fatigue, muscle aches, cognitive slowing and headaches. Also, long-

haulers still exhibit various symptoms of COVID even after testing negative for the virus.

“The long-lasting health effects of COVID-19 could affect anyone at any age, but appears to be more likely with those over the age of 50,” said Director of Infectious Disease at Catholic Health Service’s (CHS) St. Francis Hospital Alan M. Bulbin, M.D. “Those with other comorbidities, chronic illnesses or those

who have had a more serious acute infection are also more likely to be impacted.

But we have also seen younger patients show longterm health impacts after recovering from the virus.”

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said it is actively working to learn more about the range of short- and longterm health effects associated with COVID-19. CDC officials said continued research is

revealing that many organs, including the lungs and heart, are impacted by the virus.

Dr. Bulbin recommends that medical treatment for long-haulers should be managed by an individual’s primary care physician.

He said the challenge currently facing doctors in treating those with longlasting health results from COVID-19 is identifying the proper treatment regimen.

To help those dealing with long-term health effects of COVID-19, CHS’s St. Charles Hospital now offers a Post-COVID Outpatient Rehabilitation Program.

Patients who are at least 14 days past a COVID-19 diagnosis are provided medically-supervised physical therapy for endurance training, strength training and education.

Recognizing a need to develop a program

specifically for patients who are dealing with the aftereffects of COVID-19, the medical team at St. Charles used their experience in working with patients who have respiratory illnesses such as emphysema or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

The Kiwanis Club of Lindenhurst officially launched it’s 2021 Hometown Heroes Banner Program in partnership with the Town of Babylon offering residents the opportunity to honor service men and women with a commemorative banner to be displayed in the hamlets of North Babylon, West Babylon, Deer Park, Wheatley Heights, North Amityville, Wyandanch and Copiague. “Tennessee Walt’s The Other Great American Songbook” is a oneman concert featuring two dozen songs from country’s greatest songwriters, the likes of Kris Kristofferson, Ernest Tubb, Loretta Lynn and Hank Williams, arranged for voice and piano. It’s also an intriguing, factfilled look into what has made country music (and its most prominent descendant, rock ‘n’ roll) popular throughout America and beyond.

“Think of it as a cabaret show, except that, instead

of voice-and-piano versions of Tin Pan Alley songs from the 1920s through 1950s, these are Music Row songs of the same period,” said Gayden Wren, the musical-theater veteran who performs as Tennessee Walt. “From those two streets have come the lion’s share of America’s greatest songs. Both streets were originally dedicated to pop music, music made for a buck, but in the past 20 or 30 years we’ve come to realize the classical aspects of the songs of Jerome Kern, George Gershwin and Rodgers & Hart. I think it’s time we recognized that there’s that same classical essence in the greatest country songs.

“This isn’t what people may think of when they hear the words `country music,’” Wren said. “It’s voice and piano, not fiddles and steel guitars, and I won’t be yodeling.

And this isn’t the country of Toby Keith or Carrie Underwood—it’s the older, purer country music that inspired them and everybody from Chuck Berry, Buddy Holly and Elvis Presley to Woody Guthrie, Bob Dylan and Ringo Starr. Anyone who comes to this show will learn some things they never knew about America’s musical heritage, and they’ll hear some of the funniest, most moving and most musically engaging songs ever written.”
