Belmont Joins Together To Build A City
For enduring appeal, the comic operas of Gilbert & Sullivan rank second only to Shakespeare in the history of Englishlanguage theater. But how did W.S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan create the operas that have linked their names in fame for more than a century?
The Gilbert & Sullivan Light Opera Company of Long Island answers that question in Very Truly Yours, Gilbert & Sullivan, coming to the North Babylon Public Library on Sunday, January 15, at 2 p.m.
Written and directed by Gayden Wren, with music directed by and accompanied by Thomas Z. Shepard, Very Truly Yours, Gilbert & Sullivan tells the story of the Victorian masters through their own diaries and correspondence, as well as contemporary reviews and memoirs, plus at least one song from each of

the 14 Gilbert & Sullivan operas, including H.M.S. Pinafore, The Pirates of Penzance and The Mikado. The show includes both famous favorites and delightful rarities, making it a splendid evening for seasoned Savoyard and complete novice alike, and for audiences of all ages.
The cast includes five singers, each a veteran of many company productions—the Light Opera Company is 63 years old, but the five singers have well over 100 years’ cumulative experience. Kara Vertucci of Lindenhurst is the soprano, Terry Hochler of East Meadow the mezzosoprano, Richard Risi of Locust Valley the tenor, Ben Salers of Northport the baritone and Henry Horstmann of Lindenhurst the bass.
“The story of Gilbert & Sullivan is as rich in drama, humor and human interest as any of their operas,”
Wren said. “These were the greatest playwright and the greatest composer of the late Victorian era, working together to create masterpiece after masterpiece—but they were also human beings with human strengths and weaknesses. Gilbert’s correspondence is as funny as his operas, but he was also arrogant and hard to get along with. Sullivan was universally beloved, but was a womanizer and a gambler who drove Gilbert crazy by his unwillingness to do anything until the last possible moment.
“This show offers a peek into their working methods, drawing on their correspondence as they wrote the operas,” he continued. “They were geniuses, but they didn’t always get everything right the first time, and the show reflects that. Most of all, though, it’s an inspiring story of two proud, ambitious men
slowly coming to realize that together they are greater than either is capable of becoming individually. There’s a lesson there for all of us.”

BELMONT JOINS TOGETHER TO BUILD A CITY - During a recent Makerspace activity, students at Belmont Elementary School in the North Babylon School District created their own city. Using recycled materials – including boxes, cardboard tubes and paper – they designed different buildings to create an entire cityscape. Each grade level was responsible for a different part of the city. After the city was complete, the second phase of the activity included students using Spheros, mini robots that the students coded to drive through their unique city. Babylon Citizens Council On The Arts, Inc. (BACCA) Awarded $40,000 By The New York State Council On The Arts
Babylon Citizens Council on the Arts, Inc. (BACCA) recently announced a grant award totaling $40,000 from the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA) to support the recovery of the nonprofit arts and culture sector. Following New York State’s historic investment for the arts, NYSCA has awarded $90 million since Spring 2022 to a record number of artists and organizations across the state.
Governor Kathy Hochul said, “As a cultural capital
of the world, New York State is strengthened by our expansive coverage of the arts across all 62 counties. This year’s historic commitment to the arts sector will spur our continuing recovery from the pandemic and set the course for a stronger future.”
NYSCA Executive Director Mara Manus said, “We are immensely grateful to Governor Hochul and the Legislature for their unprecedented investment of $240 million to support
arts organizations across the state. New York State arts organizations such as BACCA are the cornerstone of our vibrant arts economy. As crucial drivers of our health and vitality, we are grateful to the unwavering dedication of arts workers across the state.”

The Charity of the Month for January is Pal-O-Mine Equestrian
Pal-O-Mine Equestrian is a local non-profit organization that began in 1995 as a therapeutic horseback riding program for individuals with disabilities and other vulnerable populations. They grew from having two programs, eight horses and 80 students per week to 11 programs, 25 horses and 400 students per week - and they continue to grow today!
“Our mission has been, and continues to be, to provide a comprehensive therapeutic equine program using horses to facilitate growth, learning and healing,” said Lisa Gatti, Founder and CEO of Pal-O-Mine Equestrian. “We proudly serve individuals with disabilities, those who have been abused or neglected, the military and the impoverished.”
Their location in Islandia offers an unequaled setting for equestrian activities, with a 20-stall barn on 13 acres, handicapped accessible bathrooms, a 100’ x 120’ indoor arena with state-of-the-art-footing and a rider hoisting system, 3 outdoor riding arenas, classrooms, accessible playground, a greenhouse and a wellness center.
Looking back on 2022, Pal-O-Mine logged 4,250 hours of Volunteer Hours and 86,400 Client Contact Hours. “2022 was about inspiring one another to reach common goals and emerging stronger,” said Lisa. “Our volunteers are an integral part of the day to day
operations at Pal-O-Mine. We all work together to serve our clients the best we can.”
They also aded four new animals to their gang; three horses and a Great Pyrenees Mountain Dog, Luca who is a natural at his job of watching over the herd. Bubba, one of the horses was generously donated to them by the Morris Family. He is an amazing lesson horse and is a client favorite in their equine yoga program. Another one of the horses is Alana, a pro at teaching new students to ride independently. Lastly, Sunflower is their newest horse, which is enjoying to learn about all the different programs held at Pal-O-Mine.
“2023 will be a year of physical growth with our new educational center and treatment clinic, as well as spiritual growth by continuing to serve the many who need our 13 acre farm and herd to help them heal from trauma, grow in personal strength and learn new things to brighten their future.”

According to Gallup’s 2021 Economy and Personal Finance survey, the average individual in the United States is retiring earlier than many people might expect. Gallup found that the average retirement age was 62, which is two years earlier than the working respondents
indicated they planned to retire. Canadians are retiring a little bit later than their American counterparts, as Statistics Canada reports the average retirement age in Canada is just over 63 and a half. The average retirement age is worth noting, as studies routinely find that many
working professionals greatest concern about retiring is that they won’t have enough money saved to meet their needs. By recognizing that they may end up retiring earlier than they initially planned, professionals can make a concerted effort to save more money in the years ahead.

LIPA Announces New Community College Scholarship
Officials from the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) joined with representatives from Nassau Community College and Suffolk County Community College to announce a new community college scholarship program.
The LIPA Scholarship is designed to provide education and training for students from households with incomes below the median income of Long Island and the Rockaways (approximately $100,000 for a family of four) living in historically underserved communities.
The LIPA Scholarship is a $350,000 commitment over the next five years to provide 50 full scholarships for students to attend either Nassau Community College or Suffolk County Community College to obtain an associate degree or certificate that will help them pursue a career in the electric utility or clean

The curricula offered at Nassau Community College and Suffolk County Community College
include courses relevant to the work LIPA does to meet the clean energy goals set by New York’s Climate Act, as well as to fulfill LIPA’s mission of providing clean, reliable, and affordable energy to Long Island and the Rockaways.
The LIPA Scholarship will support incomequalified, graduating high school seniors, allowing them to extend their educational development and enter the utility and clean energy sectors. Participation in the LIPA Scholarship will provide graduates with a competitive edge in applying for employment at LIPA and its contractor, PSEG Long Island, who plan to hire hundreds of entry-level workers over the next five years.
This five-year program will provide annual funding for ten full-time, two-year scholarships for low- to moderateincome students who reside in disadvantaged communities, as identified by New York’s Climate Justice Working Group, planning to attend Nassau Community College or Suffolk County Community College. Residents of the following communities served by LIPA are eligible for the LIPA Scholarship:

Daniel Schleyer was celebrated as Boy Scout Troop 399’s 73rd Eagle Scout at his Eagle Scout Court of Honor on Saturday, December 17th, 2022. The Court of Honor recognizes a Boy Scout’s promotion to Eagle Scout. Becoming an Eagle Scout signifies a scout’s hard work and determination. The recipient must earn at least 21 merit badges, provide leadership and serve the local community and society. Scouts are
required to complete a capstone project that benefits their community in order to be awarded the rank of Eagle Scout. Mr. Schleyer’s Eagle Scout project transformed an unused basement room at the Cross of Christ Church into a brand-new food pantry.
Boy Scout Troop 399 is a Boy Scout Troop based in North Babylon, NY, and a member of the Sagtikos District of the Boy Scouts of America’s
Suffolk County Council. Troop 399 is sponsored by the North Babylon Lions Club.
