Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone held a press conference to announce the commencement of year-round Sunday bus service on ten bus routes in Suffolk County beginning January 5th, 2014. “Providing additional transportation opportunities for Suffolk County will give residents who are in need of transportation on Sundays the opportunity to shop, attend church services, and get to work without having to rely on family or friends or just not having the opportunity to travel on Sundays,” said County Executive Bellone. “I would like thank Legislator Schneiderman for sponsoring this legislation and supporting transportation initiatives in the County as well the Welfare to Work Commission. Remember when you were a kid in school, just dying for that first snowfall to cancel classes? The only plans for the day revolved around making snowmen and snow angels, and then maybe curling up on the couch with some hot cocoa and cookies to watch a movie. Sounds nice, doesn’t it? Fast forward twenty or so years, and the words “chance of flurries” immediately

inspire mass panic and a stampede to stock up on milk and bread. And shovels. Because, you know, you can never have too many. Gone are the days of crossing your fingers for a “snow day” – now, it’s a mad rush to dig out, defrost and brave the slippery slopes on your way to work. Ah, the joys of adulthood. Of course there are days when the snow is insurmountable for even us adults, and we get to stay home and play in the snow too – or at least watch the

neighborhood children from the window, cup of cocoa in hand, reveling in memories of simpler times. How far away those seem. We are fortunate to live in an area where we experience the full force of Mother Nature in all her four-seasoned glory. We may as well enjoy it while we can. Think of the snow as an escape from the routine – or, at the very least, a great way to kick off that New Year’s resolution by burning a few calories while shoveling!

Sea Tow hosted a raffle for the Cub Scout volunteers, and another raffle for the Southold and Mattituck/ Cutchogue Elementary Schools students who made donations. Christine’s over the phone instructions would prove vital in successfully bringing a bouncing baby girl into this world. As delivery became eminent, Christine began to provide post-dispatch and pre-arrival instructions which included clearing the infant’s airway and tying off the umbilical cord. Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone today honored Fred Pollert for his 37 years of service to Suffolk County residents by presenting him with the distinguished Suffolk County Public Service Award. The Suffolk County Public Service Award, is the highest honor to be bestowed on an individual for extraordinary and exemplary service to the

two years as Vice President for Administration for the Long Island Power Authority. For the past two years he has served as Deputy County Executive for Finance and Management under County Executive Bellone, returning to County service in order to work with County Executive Bellone on fiscally responsible items to put Suffolk County back onto strong fiscal footing without piercing the tax cap. The award was created during the administration of County Executive John Klein and designed by then Chief Deputy County Executive Arthur Bergmann. It was first presented in 1973 and over the past 40 years, it has only been presented to 17 individuals. The first was presented to H. Lee Dennison, who served as Suffolk’s first County Executive.

Security Update Keeping staff and students secure in the learning environment is of the utmost importance in the West Babylon Union Free School District. As such, all seven schools were assessed last year to determine the effectiveness of current security measures and what additional measures may need to be implemented to better ensure the safety and well-being of students and staff. Intralogic Solutions of Massapequa, a security solutions company, was responsible for conducting the Technical Threat Vulnerability Assessment. The assessment identified a myriad of positive security and safety precautions already in place within the district, including the use of cameras covering interior and exterior areas of the buildings, exterior doors that are locked throughout

the day, and the use of visitor passes with sign-in and sign-out procedures. Additionally, the district utilizes anti-intruder alarms in each building, a visible staff identity protocol using name badges, and an electronic mass notification system to communicate with parents and guardians. Several schools in the district have the ability to live monitor the video surveillance systems and use an intercom system at the front door of the building. Intralogic also recognized that the district’s Project SAVE (Safe Schools Against Violence in Education) materials were up to date, and that lockdown, lockout and shelter-in drills were practiced in all buildings. In an effort to expand upon the enhancements from last year, the Board of Education approved a proposal that will

result in upgrades to the current security system totaling $208,554.50. The installation costs could not be fully financed; therefore, $119,509.81 was included in this year’s budget. Other aspects of the proposal (hardware and software) will be financed through Eastern Suffolk BOCES and will be paid over a five-year period. The aforementioned proposal was approved by the New York State Education Department. The work, which includes the installation of additional panic alarms, access control, video surveillance upgrades throughout the district, door ajar alerts at the high school, and video surveillance at the junior high school and bus garage, will begin shortly after the start of the New Year.

In an effort to encourage elementary school-aged boys to develop and foster a love of reading, John Varrone, acting library/ media specialist at South Bay Elementary School in the West Babylon Union Free School District, initiated the Guys Read campaign. Mr. Varrone invited the fathers, older brothers and grandfathers of students

to visit the school library and share stories with the classes. “Boys don’t have enough positive male role models for literacy,” said Mr. Varrone. “Many boys may not see reading as a masculine activity. Having dads or male family members come in and read helps to change that perception. The program is beneficial to both the

fathers and their sons. Often times, many of their joint activities revolve around Major League Baseball, the NFL or ESPN. While there is nothing wrong with a healthy interest in sports by father and son, we need to get all children, especially boys, more involved in reading. Learning these skills will improve their chances for success in the real world.”

Dignity For All Students In compliance with the New York State Dignity for All Students Act, or DASA, the West Babylon Union Free School District has updated its code of conduct policies, as per Section 2801 of education law, has designated DASA coordinators to oversee the initiative, and has been providing all staff

members with ongoing awareness training. Signed into law Sept. 13, 2010, DASA expands the concepts of tolerance, respect for others and dignity to include an awareness and sensitivity in the relations of people, including but not limited to those of different races, weights, national origins,

ethnic groups, religions, religious practices, mental or physical abilities, sexual orientations, gender identities or expressions, and sexes. On the first day of the 2013-2014 school year, all school staff in the district received updated DASA information, including information pertaining to

the cyberbullying law that took effect July 1st, 2013. At each school, principals held code of conduct assemblies in which they presented DASA information to students. In addition, each school continues to maintain a focus on social-emotional learning and character education, subjects which

are further addressed to students through cultural arts assemblies organized by the district’s PTAs. “Student safety and security is a priority in the West Babylon School District,” said Christine Tona, the district’s executive director for curriculum and instruction. “Ongoing

training for our district staff about the Dignity for All Students Act and how to respond to the issues that may arise is just one of the many steps taken to ensure this priority for our students.”
