Of Taboo Topics & Talking Points By: Jamie Lynn Ryan They say that two of the most taboo topics are religion and politics, subjects that should be avoided at all costs when in mixed company. Before I had my own legitimate opinions on such matters, I have to admit that I never understood what the big deal was. Now I get it. Especially in this day and age, with the advent of social media and the ability to post all sorts of potentially controversial tweets, status updates, photos, videos, etc.… is it any wonder that tensions tend to build to the point of heated disagreements? One day you’re “friends” – the next you’re engaged in a bitter dispute over political ideals. Some things should simply be left for private discourse.

Now is the time to save up to $1000 on every gorgeous Karastan carpet. Every pattern. Every color. Come in today and Save. Sale ends on November 6th.

thing valid and eye opening. But merely shoving your unsolicited opinions down someone else’s throat is not only unnecessary, but borders on disrespectful. Voting booths are private for a reason, as are many religious institutions and practices. No one should feel obligated to defend his/her beliefs, so long as they are founded in some sort of informed, grounded philosophy. And if they aren’t, if they are merely based on a handful of regurgitated talking points or hearsay – well then, why would you want to recruit someone so ignorant to your side anyway? Better they are left to their own devices. Simply my opinion. Take it or leave it.

Personally, I have always felt that, as long as your opinion is well informed and based on some sort of intelligent foundation, there should really be no need to defend it. Believe what you believe; just don’t try to impose it upon others. That’s what the politicians are for. Those basic philosophies which make us different are precisely what make our society unique – and interesting. No need to change that. When things take a nasty turn – which they inevitably seem to – whether in the form of written discourse or verbal sparring, that’s when it has gone too far. A little healthy debate is fine, and should be encouraged even. We should all be open to other viewpoints – perhaps, in our own narrow-minded tunnel vision, we may have missed some-

support for Start2Stop comes at the perfect time. “I am grateful to Assemblyman Sweeney for helping us make this program more accessible to local residents before their use of drugs and alcohol accelerates,” he said. “This proactive approach and timely intervention will help make Suffolk County a safer and healthier place.” “Long Island continues to experience a number of well-publicized tragedies due to substance abuse. The Start2Stop program helps participants get control of their substance abuse problem before it escalates into a tragedy. While we need strong laws to deal with the results of DWI and BWI incidents, it is far better to prevent those tragedies from happening in the first place. That’s what this grant is intended to do,” said Assemblyman Sweeney. For more information about Start2Stop, or any of LICADD’s other services, please call 631.979.1700 or visit www.licadd.org.

Participants may have experienced personal or professional consequences of their substance use, or may have been arrested for a non-violent low-level offense that involved the use of alcohol and/or illegal substances. The program is 100% confidential and open to all regardless of ability to pay. Start2Stop participants are required to abstain from any drug or alcohol use while they are enrolled in the program. Those who are unable to remain abstinent during the twelve weeks of sessions are counseled and referred for more intensive treatment. With a well-publicized opiate crisis gripping Long Island and a documented upswing in impaired driving and boating, LICADD Executive Director Dr. Jeffrey Reynolds says

The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) is set to receive a $20,000 grant from the NYS Office of Substance Abuse Services to support its addiction services in Suffolk County, thanks to the efforts of NYS Assemblyman Bob Sweeney. Specifically, the grant funds the expansion of LICADD’s Start2Stop program, which provides drug and alcohol information, solutionfocused counseling, peer support and treatment referrals to local residents of all ages. Start2Stop is a professionally facilitated support group that helps participants explore their substance abuse experiences and attitudes about drugs and alcohol, learn more about the biological/social and psychological consequences of use and understand the impact such use has had, and will have on their lives and relationships. The twelve week psychoeducational program is designed for individuals who have had some involvement with drug

Walk-Along For Lupus
NEW LASER KILLS TOENAIL FUNGUS!
On Sunday, October 21st, in Eisenhower Park, Field #6, over 2,000 people will bring friends, family and co-workers and WalkAlong for Lupus! Join Greg-T from Z-100, enjoy live music, have your face painted, get your picture taken with the USA Skateasauras and take home some great giveaways, all whil raising funds to support those in need in the Long Island/Queens area that have lupus, as well as novel research into the cause and hopefully, one day, the cure! To register to be a walker at this event, visit www.firstgiving.com/lupu sliqueens, where you can register and collect donations online. Why not utilize those friends you’ve made on Facebook, Twitter and Linked In, as well as those out-of-town family members, by collecting donations online while helping those that suffer from lupus; a chronic, life-threatening
disease that has no known cure. You can download widgets for your social networking pages and email signatures, and this year you can also post a YouTube video on your fundraising page describing why you WalkAlong for Lupus. If the internet is not for you, you can still collect donation with a WalkAlong envelope. Just call 1.800.850.9000 and ask for a walk packet to be sent to your home. You
can also pre-register in person at the Bellmore office the week of October 15th. Extended office hours that week include Thursday until 8 p.m., Friday until 9 p.m. and Saturday until 2 p.m. Please help make the 19th Annual Walk-Along for Lupus a milestone to remember. The Lupus Alliance of America LIQ Affiliate is the only resource on Long Island for those in the area who have lupus. Your
donations to the WalkAlong for Lupus go directly to helping your loved ones, friends and neighbors who have been diagnosed and need support, education, financial assistance and more. Donate or register to walk today! Volunteers are always needed as well; please call the office for more informaiton at 516.783.3370 or e-mail the Lupus Alliance, info@lupusliqueens.org.

Concussion of the brain is the very common injury that occurs under different circumstances. It can occur during the simple slip and fall accident, motor vehicle accident, but most commonly it does in sport. Over the last ten years a lot of research was done with an intention to explain why there is much higher incidence of neurological disorders affecting professional sport players. This study eventually revealed that a mild head injury causes pathological processes that eventually may lead to neurological diseases such as Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, Lou Gehrig’s, etc. During the mild head injury or mild concussion of the brain, the symptoms of the actual injury could be transient and brief, and eventually this condition becomes virtually asymptomatic or having very subtle symptoms. Those symptoms could be just a mild headache, excessive fatigue, excessive or lack of sleep, problem with concentration. Since many symptoms of concussion are brief and may not be present on the second or third day after the concussion, it will leave very little tools to help a doctor to determine if the player is ready to go back to play. Current thinking is that optimal recovery of concussed students occurs when there is cognitive, physical, and emotional rest following injury. Additionally, research has shown that 92% of second injuries occur in the first week following the initial injury, and the goal is to allow adequate recovery time before allowing a student to risk re-injury. Pressure to return an athlete before it is safe can be intense from parents and athletes. Primary care physicians are being asked to assist in the process of keeping injured children safe by remaining objective and withholding participation until it is deemed safe with a reasonable degree of medical certainty.
return to school), but we anticipate a similar slow exertional challenge as we see in RTP. The graduated steps begin after the student has a medical clearance to return to academics, and is symptom free off pain killing medicines for a full 24 hours. RTL should be an individualized steady progression with the parent’s checking the child daily for a return of symptoms and alerting you if the student is struggling so you can provide appropriate requests for medical accommodations to the school as needed. Unlike a RTP, the RTL might start at any level and progress at a rate individualized to the student’s needs and tolerance. Steps might be skipped as tolerated and might look something like this: Students with reasonable recovery times typically will get accommodations within the school by the principal. Students with protracted recovery beyond about 10 weeks, a school quarter, are likely eligible for a 504 plan or an IEP, and you might be asked to write a request to support the family at that time.

The Concussion Act of NYS
The Concussion Act of NYS took effect July 1, 2012, and requires schools to: • Educate parents, athletes, coaches, athletic trainers, physical education teachers, and school nurses on concussion, • Remove observed or suspected concussed students from play based on signs and symptoms, • Withhold further participation until evaluated by, and received written and signed authorization to return to activities from a licensed physician. • Obtain physician clearance, and when the athlete has been symptom-free off pain killing medicines for a minimum of 24 hours and allow them to begin a monitored progressive six phase return to play. MAKING A CLINICAL DETERMINATION • Symptoms: somatic (e.g. headache, nausea, dizziness), cognitive (e.g. feeling in a fog), and/or emotional (e.g. liability)
• Behavioral changes: irritability, personality changes • Cognitive impairment: Hard time concentrating, trouble remembering, not feeling themselves, being confused, thinking speed slowed down, taking a longer time to react • Sleep disturbance: drowsiness, insomnia GRADUATED RETURN TO PHYSICAL EXERTION AND ACTIVITY OR RETURN TO PLAY (RTP) This is a six step gradual return to activity. The RTP protocol may not start until an athlete is completely symptom-free for a full 24 hours off pain killing medicines, and must remain symptom-free for 24 hours following each stage before progressing further. RECOVERY Average recovery following concussion is about a week to ten days; protracted recovery with post concussion syndrome is after 21 days. Young teenage girls often have protracted recovery more than any other group. RETURN TO LEARN (RTL) More information will be forthcoming about RTL (cognitive

exemption.” Receiver Stefanich noted that the State must first raise the income ceiling before local municipalities can adopt it. “Supervisor Venditto has been contact with State legislators about raising the income ceiling again so the Town can make the exemption available to more seniors, as he knows additional relief is still needed,“ he commented. Receiver Stefanich noted that any resident or organization interested in obtaining a free brochure can pick one up at Town Halls North (Oyster Bay) and South (Massapequa), the Department of Public Works (Syosset) and at major park facilities, or call or write to the Town of Oyster Bay Public Information Office, Town Hall East, 54 Audrey Avenue, Oyster Bay, N.Y. 11771 (516.624.6380). Guitarist Sylwia Kloc has been an active performer and teacher for 12 years. A graduate with honors from the prestigious Mannes Conservatory of Music, where she earned her Bachelors and Master Degree, Mrs. Kloc has recently moved to Massapequa from Brooklyn, NY. A founding member of the South Shore Music Conservatory, Mrs. Kloc also teaches popular music, Ukulele (Hawaiian Guitar), and Lute. She accepts students as young as 6 years old. Mrs. Kloc serves as an adjunct professor of classical guitar at Montclair State University, NJ. Her students have been recognized at NYSSMA Festivals, and at concerts in the New York Metro area. For more information contact Sylwia Kloc (917) 292-3149 or email: sylwiakloc@yahoo.com Violinists Mr. and Mrs. Alberghini have played the violin since the age of 4 and 7 respectively. They have participated in prestigious festivals in the United States, Latin America, and Europe. They are graduates of the Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College, and Mrs. Alberghini holds a Master Degree in Music Education from the Steindhart School of Education at New York University. As founding members of the (SSMC), they bring to Massapequa 10+ years of experience teaching the violin to kids of age 6 and above with recognitions at NYSSMA. Group lessons are available for kids 4-5. Mr. and Mrs. Alberghini recently moved to Massapequa from Queens, NY, and they are looking forward to sharing and passing on the great gifts of Music. After the proper foundation, kids will have a chance to learn different styles of music other than classical, like Irish Fiddling, Gypsy, Bluegrass, etc.!!!! Our Philosophy We believe in giving every student the ability to learn at their own pace, in a noncompetitive environment, where the skills of learning how to play a musical instrument will enhance their life. Numerous studies suggest that the benefits of music education can increase a child’s potential to perform better in Math, Reading and Science. We believe that music education is part of a solid foundation in a child’s development, by teaching about discipline, attention, and team work, all skills necessary to succeed in school, sports, college, the job market, and as a member of a vibrant community.

Developmental Disabilities Institute (DDI), the leading service provider for children and adults with autism on Long Island, hosted its DDI Walk and Motorcycle Run for Autism, on September 23rd at the Holtsville Ecology Center. DDI raise over $35,000 to help fund the vital programs and services DDI provides to over 5,000 families served by their educational and residential programs, adult day training and medical services. “This event is all about coming together as a community and helping those who cannot help themselves,” said CoChairmen of the event Brian Brunjes and Charlie Hudson. “This year we not only met that goal, but we exceeded it. It is inspiring to see the generosity of a community come together and lend themselves to help benefit thousands of Long Islanders.” Hundreds of Long Islanders came out for the scenic 5K Walk through Suffolk County's Holtsville Ecology Park followed by a festival in the park complete with picnic lunch, music, games, a petting zoo and more. This year event also included a Motorcycle run sponsored by Hansen Home Designs. U.S. Olympian and Sachem alum Maria Michta helped kick the walk off as the Grand Marshall. Maria recently competed in the women’s 20K race walk event at the summer games in London. “I am honored to be invited to DDI’s Walk and Motorcycle Run as the Grand Marshall,” stated Maria. “As an athlete, DDI's walk presents a wonderful opportunity to work out while also giving back to the community. I would like to thank DDI for this opportunity as well as everyone in attendance for their support. ASDs are unfortunately all too common and while scientists and doctors continue to search for answers it is important that we as a community do our part to support those families who struggle with the frustrating realties of these disorders on a daily basis.” 244813N1010

partnership, the Alfred P. Sloan foundation enlisted the expertise of the Families and Work Institute of New York, The Institute for a Competitive Workforce at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the Twiga Foundation, Inc to create the When Work Works project and the Alfred P. Sloan Award for business excellence in workplace flexibility. The Sloan Award honors businesses that have made commitments
to workplace effectiveness and flexibility as a tool to enhance organizational and employee success. As a winner, YES ranks in the top 20% of employers nationwide in workplace flexibility. The Sloan Award recognizes organizations that are dedicated to making work “work” for both the employer and the employees. Representing employers of all sizes and all types, winners of this prestigious award not only offer excellent workplace
flexibility practices, but they also use flexibility as a strategic business tool to enhance organizational effectiveness while also benefiting employees. YES Board of Directors and Executive staff acknowledge the important role that flexibility practices play in the success of an organization and how critical it is to recognize and respond to the needs of our employees. Applications for the Alfred P. Sloan Awards were open
to all organizations in the greater New York area with more than 10 employees that had been in business for at least one year. Applicants were evaluated in a rigorous two-step process, first comparing the employer’s application to nationally representative data from Families and Work Institute’s National Study of Employers, and then corroborating the employer responses through a survey of employees. Jamie
Bogenshutz, YES Executive Director stated that, “The agency is truly excited to receive this p r e s t i g i o u s acknowledgement which further attests to our organizations efforts to maintain and achieve the highest of business standards.” For more information about YES Community Counseling Center, please call 516.799.3203 or visit them on the web at yesccc.org.
sees approximately 200 new cases of childhood cancer every year. Thanks to improvements in chemotherapy, radiotherapy and surgery, there are more than 300,000 children, teens and young adults in the United States who are survivors of childhood cancer and require ongoing care. To help meet the complex needs of survivors, CCMC pediatric oncologist hematologist Jonathan Fish, MD, created the Survivors Facing Forward Program (SURFF). “Though we cannot choose our challenges,”
Dr. Fish said, “Survivors Facing Forward will help survivors face the unique concerns ahead, and will advocate for your wellbeing and serve as a resource.” Survivors also know the importance of a positive attitude, a fact evident in the smiles of the hundreds present. Cancer Survivors’ Day
When he was diagnosed at age 21 before starting his senior year at Boston College, Mr. Herzlich was told that he would not be able to play football again - and may never run again. “I decided that I wasn’t going to let cancer beat me,” Mr. Herzlich told fellow survivors. His dream of playing football pushed him to not just be a survivor, but to “be a thriver.” A three-year cancer survivor who won a Super Bowl ring with the Giants in February during
his rookie season, he encouraged attendees to “fulfill your dreams.” The event, made possible by the support of Ruth and Harold Nelkin as a way to honor the memory of their son, Les, attracted former child cancer patients of all ages. They included Tracy Vicere, who is celebrating 22 years of survivorship after being diagnosed at age 16 with two different types of cancer, Hodgkin’s Disease and NonHodgkin’s Lymphoma.
New Wiper Blades Experts say windshield wiper blades are one of the most important-yet often overlooked-safety features on a car. Michelin's new
advanced frameless design wiper blades are made with a special rubber compound that helps maintain an effective
wiping edge and extend blade life for reliable, allweather performance. V i s i t www.michelinwiper.com.

Eisenhower Park was filled with the laughter of more than 700 pediatric cancer survivors and family members who gathered for the inaugural Les Nelkin Pediatric Cancer Survivors’ Day hosted by Cohen Children’s Medical Center (CCMC) of New York. They cheered as the event’s keynote speaker, New York Giants’ linebacker Mark Herzlich talked about his own successful battle with Ewing’s sarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer.
CCMC was her home away from home for months. Despite the difficulties of treatment, she had the support of her family and made many great friends with the hospital staff and her team of doctors. “I felt I was saved for a reason and am thankful to give back to Cohen through my foundation, Friends and Angels: The Tracy Vicere Foundation,” she said. The foundation hosts fundraisers to benefit the Division of Hematology/Oncology and Stem Cell Transplantation at CCMC. As a leading center of pediatric oncology, CCMC

Job Fair Set
The Town of Oyster Bay, through its federallysubsidized Workforce Program, will be holding a Job Fair and Employment Seminar on Thursday, October 11th, Town Supervisor John Venditto announced. The event, which is intended to aid t h o s e unemployed/underemploy ed within the Town, will be held at the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center, 1001 Stewart Avenue in Bethpage. “The Town is very excited to present both the job seekers and businesses with this unique opportunity,” Supervisor Venditto stated. “At this job fair and employment seminar, over 25 companies are expected to attend, providing an opportunity for employees
to apply onsite for job openings, and to learn about the application process and specific employment needs of each individual company.” In addition to the e m p l o y m e n t opportunities presented by companies onsite, experienced Town of Oyster Bay Workforce Specialists will be available to meet with job seekers on a one-on-one basis to discuss job search strategies, assess skill levels, explore career opportunities, and critique/prepare professional resumes. “The Town’s Workforce Specialists are a unique resource that we are happy to make available to those who attend the job fair and seminar,” Supervisor Venditto
Cheer On The Chiefs continued. “While the ultimate goal of any such job fair and employment seminar is finding as many employment opportunities for those who attend as possible, I am confident that those in attendance will leave knowing that with hard work and determination, a great job is within reach.” As part of the day’s events, a presentation by the Long Island Labor Market Analyst will provide current information on the state of the Long Island economy, including active hiring trends amongst companies and industries. For more information on the job fair and employment seminar, and to reserve a slot, contact the Town’s Workforce Program at 516.797.4560.

Massapequa High school graduate Chris Crowley, class of 2012, is one of the district’s foreign language program success stories. During his high school career, Chris studied French, Chinese
and Italian. He received a 5, the highest grade, on the Advanced Placement French exam and earned an Excellence in Foreign Language Study Award from the Foreign Language Association of
Chairpersons and Supervisors (FLACS). During a recent visit to his alma mater he discussed his postgraduate pursuits at Hunter College’s Chinese Language Flagship
program to show current foreign language students what they can aspire to beyond high school. The government-funded Language Flagship program, offered at various colleges and universities throughout the country, aims to promote in the United States uncommon languages ranging from Arabic to Turkish by offering students intensive language instruction and immersion to enhance their academic degrees. Through the program, Chris is expected to achieve high proficiency in Mandarin Chinese through a combination of content-based instruction, one-on-one conversation
practice, community service, internships and a one-year study abroad program. “Students in the program major in a chosen language and another field of study with the goal of becoming ‘global professionals’ by using language to become successful in a chosen field.” Chris said. A Chinese and economics major, Chris described how the program immerses participants in the art and culture of China through various field trips in New York City. He also discussed his plans to volunteer in Taiwan for two-and a half months and then spend his fourth year in China learning
economics in Chinese the first half of the year and interning the second half of the year. He advised current foreign language students to “keep practicing to overcome struggles with the language, stick to class participation because that is a form of emerging to proficiency, and be conscious of tones so that you can speak more effectively and are not misinterpreted.” He also encouraged them to take advantage of any realworld opportunities. instructional tool in colleges and universities, and is just recently gaining popularity in grades K-12. Through years of research, and the piloting of several LMS programs, the Massapequa School District chose the Haiku Learning Management System because of its robust, userfriendly features and its ease of integration. Combine that with Haiku’s Google Apps for Education (GAFE) partnership, offering such applications as cK-12 FlexBooks and Kahn Academy, and the benefits of the anytime, anywhere
classroom connection are boundless. Jennifer Steigerwald, executive assistant for Digital Curriculum Support and Development, created the implementation plan and the training program, and is experiencing the enthusiasm of the Haiku participants firsthand. “Everywhere you go, people are talking about Haiku — the excitement is infectious,” she said. Purchased through Nassau BOCES to qualify for state aid, the program is being used on a voluntary basis throughout the district
for both instructional and administrative purposes. So far, about 150 teachers have been trained and more training sessions are scheduled throughout the school year. Students in grades K-12 and their parents have been logging on during the first weeks of school. The immediate increase in collaboration among students, staff and administration is driving the success of this program. “Students using LMS technology are learning in ways that embrace 21stcentury learning by having the opportunity to develop life skills, improve
