Green At The Game Farm All living things need water to survive and stay hydrated. Do you appreciate the water found all around you that helps you grow? On April 20th, The Long Island Game Farm is hosting Green At The Game Farm, a special Earth Day event that will take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Children will learn to make their own rain sticks

as they celebrate this very special planet that everyone lives on. Older children (and younger children, with a parent’s help) will also participate in a special Earth Day scavenger hunt as they travel throughout the Game Farm looking for clues. The event is free to children under 12, with paid admission. “This is a fun and educational event that

children can take part in to celebrate Earth Day,” said Melinda Novak, Vice President/Co-Owner, Long Island Game Farm. “While they join in arts and crafts and the scavenger hunt, they will begin to appreciate these natural resources and not take

them for granted.” In the event of rain, it will be rescheduled for April 21. For more information on The Long Island Game Farm, please call 631.878.6670, or visit www.longislandgamefarm. com.

spring,” commented State Cup Chairperson Barbara Rodriguez, an ENYYSA Hall of Famer. As the name implies, the State Open Cup (US Youth Soccer / ENY State Championship) is open to all teams. 283 squads will be playing in this competition primarily for Premier, Division 1 and Division 2 teams. Only State Open Cup champs go on to play in the Regionals with those winners going to the

Nationals in the National Championship Series. The ENY Upper 90 Cup is a new competition this spring. 167 excellent teams in each ENYYSA league who are not Premier League teams are playing in this competition. The finals of both the State Open Cup and ENY Upper 90 Cup are scheduled for Saturday, June 1st and Sunday, June 2nd at Stringham Park in LaGrange. The third competition is the Arch Capital Group Cup with 261 teams competing. For Under-12 and above, it is for travel teams who are still working to rise to the level of the best teams in each ENYYSA league. It is open to all Under-10 and Under-11 teams regardless of skill level. Our sponsor, Arch Capital Group, writes insurance and reinsurance on a worldwide basis through operations in the United States, Bermuda, Canada and Europe, with a focus on specialty lines. “This cup competition is a great event in that it gives young people an

opportunity to experience high levels of competition. And you don’t have to be the best team in the state to win a championship with the Arch Capital Group Cup,” commented Brian Hughes, Senior Vice President and Chief Actuary of Arch Capital. The finals of the Arch Capital Group Cup are scheduled for Saturday, June 8th at the Peter Collins Soccer Park in Plainview, Long Island. Both State Cup championship venues, besides having wellmanicured grass soccer fields, sport 9/11 memorials. The Memorial Plaza at Stringham Park was installed by the LaGrange Rotary Club while the 9/11 Commemorative Plaza at the Collins Soccer Park was built last year by the Long Island Junior Soccer League. For more information about the State Cup, please contact ENYYSA at 516.766.0849.

A dedicated group of students from St. Joseph’s College (SJC) are opting for an alternative spring break close to home this year, and will spend the week of April 1st through 5th aiding in recovery efforts for local communities that were destroyed earlier this year by Superstorm Sandy. Partnering with organizations such as the Gray Beards, Tunnel to Towers and Sandy Relief Long Beach, students will stay close to home to work in Long Beach, Far Rockaway, Breezy Point and Staten Island, some of the hardest hit areas in New York and New Jersey. This past October, Superstorm Sandy, the deadliest and most destructive storm of the 2012 hurricane season, flooded homes, streets, tunnels and subway lines, destroyed property and left thousands without power. The storm affected countless individuals,

including many members of the SJC community. Now, nearly five months later, SJC students, alumni, faculty and staff are eager to assist those still suffering and decided to cancel trips they had planned to volunteer in other locations around the country. Sponsored by SJC’s Campus Ministry, the Habitat for Humanity, STRIPES (Students Taking a Role in Positively Empowering Society) and STARS (Students Taking an Active Role in Society) clubs, faculty members from both the Long Island and Brooklyn campuses, selected a group of 26 students that were willing to spend their spring breaks rebuilding structures, moving sand, painting and helping in any way possible after Superstorm Sandy tore through the east coast, leaving particularly severe damage in New York and New Jersey.

“These groups have been working hard to train, plan, organize and fundraise for this year’s alternative spring break,” said Bryan Gill, moderator of the Habitat for Humanity Club and assistant dean of students and student life on the Long Island Campus. “With such a large group of volunteers, we will be able to split into smaller groups and reach more communities and help even more people. We will also spend time reflecting on this experience and using the trip as a mini service learning project.” Previous spring break trips for SJC students have included helping to build a day care center and playground in Nicaragua, building homes in Georgetown, South Carolina and rebuilding homes that were destroyed by tornadoes in Joplin, Missouri.

Spring Break Rebuilding

How many songs do you have on your iPod? Do you even listen to half of them? And what about that CD collection? Is it gathering dust on some rack or – better yet – packed away in a box with all the other electronics of yesteryear? You know, next to the famous 8-tracks, cassettes, VHS tapes and vinyl that everyone seems in such a rush to get rid of. Personally, I will never discard my CD collection. In fact, while in the process of shopping for a TV stand/ entertainment center, one of my main criteria was finding a piece with enough shelving to accommodate

my massive music collection. Sure, most of my favorite songs are already stored on my computer, my iPod, my iPhone…but still, there’s nothing quite like putting on a CD and listening to the tracks in sequence – back when an album was an entire concept, rather than a string of hit singles thrown together. I can understand the attachment people have to their records – to anything that encapsulates a moment in time in their respective lives, really. I have a hard time throwing anything out – mostly for sentimental reasons – hence the massive collection of CDs… and books…and videos… and knick-knacks. Sure, some are obsolete and serve no real

purpose – but they’re mine. They each have a story and a memory associated with them and, even if I’ve outgrown the need to display certain mementos, you can bet they will be carefully packed away in a box sooner than kicked to the curb. Don’t get me wrong – I’m by no means a hoarder, nor will you ever see three quarters of the things I have meticulously catalogued and saved through the years out in the open – as long as they are stored away for safe-keeping, ready to reminisce over whenever the moment strikes. As for my CDs, I just can’t bear to put them away in a box. Not yet. Good thing my wall unit has shelves.

Helping our patients feel better since 1985.

See What The Experts Have To Offer We always strive to reach our patients’ goals whether it is to run a marathon, or reach for a jar on the top shelf at the local supermarket. We use the most up to date treatment techniques supported by the latest research. We create an individualized treatment plan based on your functional level and needs, and progress you accordingly. Additionally, you will be provided with a home exercise program to enhance your recovery and prevent future problems.

Our #1 priority at Island Sports Physical Therapy is patient education. We ensure that every one of our patients has a thorough understanding of their condition, and treatment plan. We cover: • Pre-operative care • Exercise demonstration • Injury prevention • Post-operative precautions • Family education • Return to sport progression

Councilwoman Rebecca M. Alesia, honored the following recipients at the March 19th ceremony: Susie Gach Peelle, Distinguished Woman in the Arts; Danielle Delgrosso, Distinguished Woman in Business; Massapequa Moms Group, Distinguished Women in Community & Civic Affairs; Joan Weinstein, Distinguished Woman in Education; Rabbi Janise Poticha, Distinguished Woman in Government; Amy Palmiero-Winters, Distinguished Woman in Health Services; Ellen Kamp, Distinguished

Woman Humanitarian; and Melissa Snider, Distinguished Woman Volunteer. “The ‘Women of Distinction’ Program has certainly proven to be a memorable tradition, honoring women who stand as role models for the younger generation in the Town of Oyster Bay,” Supervisor Venditto said. “These women are a shining example of the outstanding citizenship that has made the Town of Oyster Bay such a special place to live and raise a family.”

We understand your concerns, and vow to be with you throughout the whole rehabilitation process.

ISLAND SPORTS PHYSICAL THERAPY

2 p.m., according to Oyster Bay Town Supervisor John Venditto. “Long Island has long been known as a stronghold for lacrosse, and here in the Town of Oyster Bay, we are proud to partner with the Bethpage Educational Foundation and the Bethpage School District and bring to our facilities these high level collegiate lacrosse contests,” Supervisor Venditto said. “The four featured colleges

are outstanding academic institutions that also feature some of the nation’s finest athletes. These are sure to be two hard-fought games between collegiate powers, and I believe that seeing these premiere teams in action will help the Town’s young lacrosse players aspire to further their education through athletics.” General admission tickets will be available on game day at the field with

proceeds going to Bethpage Educational Foundation, Inc. Donation for adults will be $10 and Children 12 and under will be $5. Attendees are also being asked to bring two cans of food to help support Island Harvest as part of the “LAX Fights Hungers” initiative. Supervisor Venditto said he is already looking forward to the games. “It should be a great experience and a lot of fun for the players and

the fans,” the Supervisor said. “I expect those in attendance will appreciate the opportunity to see these outstanding college teams compete locally. It also is a tremendous source of pride that these high level teams will compete at our local facilities, which are among the finest in the nation.” Supervisor Venditto expressed his appreciation to all those who helped make it possible “I would

like to thank all those involved in the planning of this event, especially the Town of Oyster Bay Parks Department and the Bethpage School District,” Supervisor Venditto said. “Without the contributions and support of the many talented and capable people that came together to make “Battle at Bethpage III” a success, none of this would have been possible.”

Driving west I pass Through towns And quiet streets Nestled in anonymity Up ahead A glimmer of light Begins to break across the horizon As I slow down for a traffic light On Sunrise Highway There is a diner Standing guard on a busy corner Lit up All chrome And empty Waitress, Arms crossed over her chest, Leans forward Her reflection Staring out Through the darkness Waiting For her day to start
