hrough the month of February, artwork created by students in kindergarten, first grade and fourth grade from North Babylon’s Marion G. Vedder Elementary School will be on display at the North Babylon Public Library. Under the direction of their Art teacher Lisa Gregorek, the students created winter-themed art pieces using a variety of different media, including oil pastels, watercolor paint and crayons.

Keys To Success By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I was recently asked to deliver the keynote address for a High School Journalism Awards Luncheon & Ceremony, to be held at my alma mater, the (formerly known as) C.W. Post campus of Long Island University. Wow. The keynote address. Only nine years removed from college myself, and here I am expected to speak intelligently for 20 minutes to a crowd of (hopefully) eager, bright-eyed high school students about the highs and lows of the Journalism industry, the track of my career, the “war stories” of dealing with 20-something editions of a weekly newspaper and each and every piece of editorial content contained within them… a rather
daunting task. Never the fan of public speaking, my first thought was, 20 minutes?! Of speaking in front of a crowd of complete strangers?! By myself?! ButthenItookadeepbreathand truly considered the prospect… Wow, what an honor to be asked. Imagine how many Journalism students have come and gone through that program over the years… some have probably gone on to achieve amazing success in the field; others may have decided to pursue another career path entirely – all making their own distinct marks. And then there was me, going from the staff of the Charles Street Times in high school, to the staff of the Pioneer in college, to the board of the Press Club of Long
Island…working my way from editorial assistant, to associate editor to managing editor here at South Bay – all while accumulating quite the pile of column clippings. Sure, many have gone on to greater things – and hopefully this is just the beginning of a similarly fruitful career for me – but the most important thing, I feel, is to remember where you started from and the process by which you ultimately achieved your dreams. It all begins with family, is supplemented by schooling and finally becomes cemented with “real world” work experience. All part of the package, all part of the path to success. Now…if only I could manage to expand that philosophy into a 20-minute keynote address!

Executive Director Stacey Scarpone said, “This has been an outstanding way for us to inspire and raise staff morale with limited resources. And the idea that 10 professional women would volunteer their time and resources to an organization dedicated to serving women and girls is an amazing philanthropic model.” In addition to the hands-on organizing, Fung Shui Consultant, Maureen Calamia provided a free consultation which included suggestions of color, furniture arrangement, and other elements which will be considered in the final phase in the near future. Ten professional organizers from Nassau and Suffolk counties recently donated their skills and services to the Women’s Fund of Long Island, an organization that provides social change grantmaking, job skills training, education and leadership development to women and girls. Members of the National Association of Professional Organizers (NAPO) group POLI, celebrated National Get Organized (GO) Month in January by organizing the Jericho executive office as well as disposing seven years of clutter. GO Month takes place each January to raise awareness of the benefits of hiring a professional organizer and getting organized. Chris” to St. Joseph’s parishioners. “It’s a blessing for us and the people of Long Island.” “With so many Long Islanders struggling to recover from the devastation caused by Sandy, CHS staff wanted to help alleviate their distress in some way,” said Sullivan. “Funds that would have been used to hold our annual Christmas party have been gladly donated to the CHS Caregivers Fund for this purpose. We hope our donation lifts the spirits of children and their families in this community who are suffering as the result of the storm. Together, we can ease their pain and share our best wishes for a brighter future.” Babylon was among the hardest hit Long Island communities, with severe flooding and enormous residential damage. More
than 75 homes in the parish of St. Joseph were ravaged by the hurricane. The church became a sanctuary for many, serving first as a warming center, allowing people some respite and the ability to recharge their devices. Later, it housed donated supplies such as bottles of water, tools, crowbars, gloves and masks. Thanks to the generosity of neighbors, the parish’s gym was completely filled with clothing from floor to ceiling. CHS contacted Catholic Charities for help in identifying five parishes that would receive $1,000 each to help purchase toys and other needed
supplies for children. They included the Church of St. Christopher in Baldwin, Our Lady of Good Counsel, Inwood, the Church of the Sacred Heart in Island Park, St. Mary of the Isle, Long Beach; and Church of St. Joseph in Babylon. The generosity and kindness of CHS employees from across the system advance Christ’s healing mission near and far, through the CHS Caregivers Fund. With CHS donating all administrative costs, 100 percent of contributions go to recipients. Additionally, the system matches funds dollar for dollar, to maximize the impact.

Catholic Health Services (CHS) recently presented its Living the Mission Award to Christopher DeRubio for exemplifying the CHS mission values of respect, justice, integrity and excellence. DeRubio, a member of the Building Services team for CHS Services, was nominated for his outstanding qualities and received the award from CHS’s President and Chief Executive Officer Richard J.J. Sullivan, Jr. Following his retirement from the New York City Police Department after 20 years of service, DeRubio joined CHS in 2009 and
was promoted to security supervisor 2 years ago. At the CHS Services Melville facility, he coordinates the collection of depositredeemable bottles and cans to be donated to Wellspring Water, Inc., which raises funds to provide clean water to overseas communities in need. He also facilitates the recycling of toner cartridges to benefit Jacob’s Light Foundation, which sends care packages to U.S. troops. A resident of Babylon Village, DeRubio is a member of the St. Joseph the Carpenter Council of the Knights of Columbus, the Fire Island
Lighthouse Preservation Society, the Babylon Village Beautification Society and the Babylon Village Historical Society. Described by one colleague as the facility’s “goodwill ambassador”, DeRubio - along with the other members of the Building Services team, Gene Buccellato and Sudesh Ramsaran - was recognized at a Living the Mission ceremony in Melville. Fellow employees at CHS Services and other subsidiaries of CHS joined them to personally offer their congratulations.
Retiree Honored Catholic Health Services (CHS) recently presented its Living the Mission Award to Gene Buccellato for exemplifying the CHS mission values of respect, justice, integrity and excellence. Sullivan, Jr. A resident of North Babylon, Buccellato has been a Building Services staff member for CHS Services since 2011. Previously, he held the position of environmental services supervisor for CHS’s Our Lady of Consolation Nursing and Rehabilitative Care Center, where he was honored with the facility’s PRIDE Award and served on the Mission
and Ministry Committee. Prior to that, Buccellato managed his familyoperated dry cleaning business in Amity Harbor for almost 20 years. He has been involved in Autism Speaks for more than 15 years and is a past member of the Babylon Lions Club and Sons of Italy. Buccellato was described as “never too busy to go the extra mile” by one colleague, while others commented on how he is “always there to lend a helping hand” and offers the “the same level of respect to all.” He and the other members of the Building Services team, Christopher DeRubio and Sudesh Ramsaran, were recognized at a Living the Mission ceremony in Melville. Fellow employees at CHS Services and other
subsidiaries of CHS joined them to personally offer their congratulations. CHS recently observed its 15th anniversary as an integrated health care system with a Mass of Thanksgiving celebrated by the Bishop of the Diocese of Rockville Centre, Most Rev. William F. Murphy. Attendees included Living the Mission honorees and other award winners from across CHS, including CHS’s hospitals, nursing and rehabilitation centers, home care, hospice and other programs serving Nassau and Suffolk counties. On that occasion, Bishop Murphy expressed his gratitude for the dedication and skill of the many individuals who are part of CHS.
State Senator Phil Boyle recently joined friends and colleagues to honor Anne Marie Dolan, retiring Director of the West Babylon Public Library. Senator Boyle presented Anne Marie with a Legislative Resolution to commemorate her career and accomplishments and to thank her for her years of service to the community. “Anne Marie’s many friends and colleagues from the community are
here today to recognize her for her many years of dedication to the West Babylon Library,” Senator Boyle said at the January 7th event. “I’d like to personally thank her for her service to the community and for the new modern facility in West Babylon that we can all enjoy today because of Anne’s many years of hard work.” Anne Marie began working in the West
Babylon Public Library as a page while still in High School. She went on to earn a Master’s Degree in Library Science, and began working for the West Babylon Public Library in 1990. Over the years, she led the library through a series of major renovations to the modern facility we appreciate today. The event also welcomed in Gail Pepa as the new Library Director.
