The Town of Oyster Bay’s Children’s Magical Music & More program will feature three excellent performances in March beginning with “Central Park Zoo: Butterfly Boogie,” a musical, interactive performance that counters the common perception of bugs being gross and introduces students to metamorphosis and the interdependence of plants and animals. Butterfly Boogie will be held at the Locust Valley Public Library, located at 170 Buckram Road, Locust Valley on Saturday, March 11th at 2:00 p.m. and is free to all Town residents. Throughout the year, the Town’s Children’s Magical Music & More program provides quality entertainment to families and children around the Town of Oyster Bay free of charge. Butterfly Boogie is just one of the many Children’s Magical Music &

More performances offered by the program this year. Seating is on a first-comefirst-serve basis and each event is recommended for children four years of age and older. The second Children’s Magical Music & More performance in March would be face painter Christopher Agostino’s “StoryFaces.” StoryFaces is an exciting and unusual storytelling show where volunteers are brought on stage and are face painted to illustrate stories as Christopher tells them, captivating the audience with folktales and his uniquely animated original stories. This performance will take place on Sunday, March 12th, at 1:00 p.m. at the Massapequa Public Library located at 40 Harbor Lane, in Massapequa. The third and final Children’s Magical Music & More performance

scheduled for March will be a performance by talented juggler; Jester Jim. Audience members of all ages will be glued to every sound of Jester Jim’s performance. With a trunk full of props and a looping machine, Jester Jim takes the stage and starts his show with an amazing beatbox intro. Jester Jim is scheduled to perform on Saturday, March 25th at 2:00 p.m. at the Hicksville Public Library, located on 169 Jerusalem Ave, Hicksville. The Children’s Magical Music & More series is sponsored by the Cultural and Performing Arts (CAPA) Division of the Town of Oyster Bay’s Department of Community & Youth Services. First Place Hicksville High School freshman Alaha Nasari earned first place in New York State for the Voice of Democracy audio essay contest hosted by the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States, and traveled to Washington, D.C. on an all-expense paid trip to compete at the

national level. Nasari, who is a student in Heather Stavrinadis’s Pre-AP World History class, has the opportunity to earn a $30,000 scholarship if she is selected as the winner of the contest. She began her quest for the national award by first competing at the regional level, where

she also earned first place. The Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States is a nonprofit veterans service organization dedicated to promoting patriotism and investing in the future generation. Nasari was sponsored by the William M. Gouse Jr. VFW Post 3211 in Hicksville.

Exploring Cultures South Grove Elementary School in Syosset recently held its seventh annual Multicultural ExploreA-Rama, consisting of cultural share workshops for students in kindergarten through third grade. Facilitated by teachers, support staff, and most notably, South Grove fifth-grade students, the event featured more than 40 different workshops. Fifth graders were asked to develop a variety of workshop experiences. Some presented workshops related to their personal cultural heritage, while many others developed workshops related to a culture not necessarily from their own ancestry, but rather interest. Many subjects were developed through their participation in the elementary World Language Program. Asian New Years, Caribbean Cinderella,

Cuban Baseball, Italian Carnival, Korean Board Games, Native American Pottery, Origami, Tangrams and Turkish Dessert were among the workshops that filled the building and kept participants captivated throughout the daylong event. While the younger students learned a lot about various cultures, Webb said it was the fifth-grade presenters who reaped the

I remember the day like it was yesterday… which is fairly impressive, considering it was actually 17 years ago, to the day in fact. This momentous occasion of which I speak, on March 8th, 2000, was the date I was told by our high school principal that I was, in fact, “officially” the valedictorian of our senior class. I can’t say the news was a complete shock, as we had all been given informal ranks pending the start of the college application process several months prior. At the time, my guidance counselor had informed my parents and I that all paperwork sent out from the administrative offices would name me as “approximately” first, a fact that I had never even thought to consider up until that very moment. I had always enjoyed school and had accumulated a collection of Honors and Advanced Placement classes

on my transcript by my senior year; but class rank was not something I had ever particularly focused my attention on. I knew it existed, obviously; but most colleges were more concerned with your overall GPA and SAT scores, not your comparison among a class of your peers. As I rounded the corner on that afternoon, en route to our “rotunda” outside the cafeteria, I was startled to find the principal seated there next to one of my friends. “Oh good, you’re here,” he said. Uh oh, I thought. My mind raced, trying to determine what I could have done to warrant this unexpected visit. Next to him, my friend had a sly smile on his face. What is this about? I couldn’t imagine. “I have some news,” he grinned, standing up and extending his hand in congratulations. “It’s official – you’re number one.” And there it was. Twelve years of hard work and

dedication, culminating in that moment, that handshake – and those five words. It was unforgettable, so much so that I chose to capture the instant in one of my college scholarship essays. The theme was “The Most Memorable Moment of My Life.” And it was; possibly, still is. The bell rang, signaling it was time to head to our next class. But I had something to do first. I raced over to the wall of payphones by our front entrance, digging for quarters as I ran through the hallway (remember, this was 17 years ago). My hands shaking, I excitedly dialed my home number. “Mom!” I practically squealed into the receiver. “Guess what???” Since then, that date has been ingrained in my mind. Each year, it comes and goes, bringing with it a smile as I recall all the happy memories of a moment that seems so fresh … and yet, so very, very long ago. Officially.

New Director Named The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependency (LICADD), Long Island’s premier provider of substance abuse services and prevention programs announced that Lee Anne Vetrone-Timothy has joined the organization as Director of Philanthropy effective Monday, February 27th. Ms. Vetrone-Timothy brings twenty-five years of marketing and communications experience to her new role. She has proven success in establishing and leading all facets of

cause-related, nonprofit and corporate marketing, communications, fundraising and event management. Through her efforts, she has raised awareness, secured vital funds and engaged new support for her clients. The breadth and scope of her work includes a presidential inaugural, international film festivals, AIDS fashion shows, school-based cultural and anti-bullying programming, American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life, and a major fundraising campaign for
