New Year’s Eve is one of the most festive nights of the year. Many people spend the final moments of the year celebrating with family and friends. As joyous as such celebrations tend to be, it’s important that New Year’s revelers keep certain safety precautions in mind when celebrating the end of one year and the dawn of the next.

Arrange for transportation in advance. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, an average of 304 people die in drunk-driving crashes in the days surrounding Christmas and New Year’s Eve each year. Before heading out on New Year’s Eve, celebrants should ensure their safety by arranging for transportation to and from the festivities. Choose a designated driver to drive throughout the night, or agree to utilize a taxi or shuttle service if everyone plans to consume alcohol. Men and women who volunteer to be designated drivers should be especially alert on the roadways, preparing to drive in potentially inclement weather and

being on the lookout for fellow motorists who might be driving erratically. If possible, take public transportation to and from the festivities so no one is tempted to drive after consuming alcohol.

Exploring the Origins of New Year’s Resolutions

For millenia, people around the world have commemorated the arrival of a new calendar year by adhering to various traditions.

Once such tradition is making resolutions for the year ahead.

Resolutions are promises to oneself geared around personal fulfillment and betterment.

Resolutions are widely practiced, but some people may not understand the origins of New Year’s resolutions and why they have become the norm.

Some historians tie the practice

of making resolutions to the ancient Babylonians. More than 4,000 years ago, the Babylonians celebrated the New Year in March rather than January. The spring harvest was in March, and a festival called Akitu, which lasted 12 days, was celebrated.

An important part of the festival was the crowning of a new king.

Special rituals also affirmed a connection to the gods. The Babylonians made promises to the gods, which included vows to return borrowed objects and pay outstanding debts.

Resolutions can also be traced to ancient Rome. The Romans were instrumental in creating a more formal calendar, and the start of the new year was moved from March to January (January and February were added to the Roman calendar under the rule of Numa Pompilius).

Julius Caesar wanted to honor January’s namesake, Janus, the Roman god of beginnings.

Janus’ two faces enabled him to look back into the past and forward into the future.

Sacrifices to Janus were made, and worshipers exchanged gifts

with one another. A custom of setting resolutions began during this period as well, with Romans promising to be good to one another.

Eventually, these resolutions were funneled into prayers and fasting when Christianity was adopted by the Roman Empire.

Other religious parallels include the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur, which is a day of atonement and reflection as celebrants examine their wrongdoings and seek forgiveness and to behave better moving forward. Yom

Kippur follows Rosh Hashanah, Judaism’s own new year.

Resolutions also may be loosely tied to Medieval times.

During this time, knights took a “peacock vow” at the end of the Christmas season. Each year, these knights would reaffirm their commitment to chivalry.

Today New Year’s resolutions are largely a secular tradition, but they’re still connected to a desire to be a good person and put one’s best self forward.

After six months in emergency housing, Ms. Nielsen was accepted into CHI’s supportive housing program, which provided her with the tools to gain independence.

Often, families with special needs become trapped in a cycle of dependency, as their benefits alone are insufficient to maintain stable housing and they succumb to the stress of an impossible situation, devoting all of their time to finding the rent.

In supportive housing, Ms. Nielsen not only gained affordable rental housing, her case managers and social workers helped with life skills, job training, health care, and linked her to a host of other community supports that contribute to stability and independence. Funding is provided under New York State’s Homeless Housing & Assistance Program,

Unfortunately, as the numbers of homeless with special needs continues to grow on Long Island, there are no easy answers to the crisis. “The number of homeless households in Nassau and Suffolk Counties increased 25% in the last three years, from 548 households in 2013 to 682 households in 2016, according to the Long Island Coalition for the Homeless.” But the victories come one family at a time. And a formerly homeless family of four will be spending their first holiday season in their new home in Mattituck, thanks to their efforts and assistance from the nonprofit Community Housing Innovations (CHI).

Historical Presentation The Plainview-Old Bethpage John F. Kennedy High School Varsity Cheerleading team won first place at the Universal Cheerleaders Association Empire Regional Cheerleading Tournament.

The team’s victory now qualifies them to compete on the national level at the upcoming Universal Cheerleaders Association National High School the Vanderbilt Cup and Hicksville’s part in the races held in 1904, 1909 and 1910. Through photos from the private archives of William K. Vanderbilt, Jr. and an assortment of “Vanderbilia,” including flags used in the races, Kroplick illustrated the rise and fall of the Vanderbilt Cup and its strategic location in the heart of the Hempstead Plains.

At Kennedy Park, the Society also participated in the tree Lighting, hosting their own tree. Past

President Bob Koenig and his wife, Jessica, did the decoration.

The Hicksville Historical Society’s next event will be a Winter Social on Sunday, January 22nd at 1:30 p.m. at Hicksville Public Library.

On Tuesday evening, November 22nd, the Hicksville Historical Society hosted a presentation by Town of North Hempstead Historian, Howard Kroplick, at Hicksville Public Library titled “The Incredible Vanderbilt Cup Races on Long Island: The Role of Hicksville.”

Kroplick is a leading scholar on the Vanderbilt Cup Races and Long Island Motor Parkway.

When you look back over the course of your life, there are often certain places that seem to stand out as the setting for your most treasured memories.

For me, that place was always my grandparents’ house.

From holiday gatherings to backyard barbecues, childhood sleepovers to Yankee baseball game viewing; countless events were centered on that old beloved split level. My grandparents had moved there in 1960, one of the first of their family to have had the opportunity to “move eastward” to the country-like expanses of Long Island from the cozy

confines of Long Island City.

With them came my then eight year-old mother and my four year-old uncle, followed a number of years later by my aunt; and thus the perfect “starter” home became the setting for the decades of memories which followed, not only for them but for the next generation as well – myself included.

Little did they know that the nearly vacant block they moved onto would grow into the close-nit community it is today, filled with neighbors and friends, and even a few family members, on the surrounding streets.

Fifty-six years later, the house that became a home

to us all is no longer “in the family,” passed on to another young couple, moving from the city, looking to begin their lives in the suburbs in much the same way that my grandparents had all those years ago. Sure, it was only a house; but it served as so much more to all those who had the pleasure of stepping foot across its threshold.

And so, with the end of 2016 comes the closing of yet another chapter for my family. Life goes on, to be sure; but some things leave a sizable imprint so that life – as it was known, and lived – is never quite the same.

Farewell to #580…

Creativity and science came together at last weekend’s FIRST® Tech Challenge Scrimmage at Long Island Lutheran Middle & High School (LuHi). Teams, comprised of students age 12 to 18, worked alongside adult mentors to design, build, program and operate robots to play a floor game in an alliance format on a 12-foot by 12-foot field.

FIRST Tech Challenge is an international program featuring hundreds of tournaments for more than 46,000 students in nearly 20 countries.

Students demonstrate their problem-solving skills, creative thinking, teamwork, competitive play, sportsmanship and sense of community.

Last weekend’s scrimmage was the first event in the 2016-2017

FIRST Tech Challenge season on Long Island.

Qualifying Tournaments will be held in Lynbrook on Sunday, January 8th, 2017; Center Moriches on Sunday, January 15th, 2017; and Syosset on Saturday, January 28th, 2017. The Long Island Championship will be held in Smithtown on Saturday, February 11th, 2017.

The FIRST Tech Challenge program is presented by SchoolBusiness Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. (SBPLI).

The other three FIRST programs are already very active on Long Island and engage students from age six through 18 in the FIRST Robotics Competition, FIRST LEGO League and FIRST LEGO League Jr. SBPLI is proud to offer this fourth and final program in the FIRST progression

of programs.

“LuHi was the perfect site to host the inaugural event of the season,” says FIRST Long Island representative, Janet Anderson. “They were a wonderful partner and we look forward to continuing our relationship with them to benefit the students of Long Island.”

“The LuHi community is still buzzing about the FIRST Tech Challenge event,” says Ed Parry, Director of Summer Programs. “They loved the atmosphere and the people involved. We look forward to hosting this event in the coming years.”

Representatives from 60 colleges and other industry organizations - including all four branches of the U.S. military - met with students at Nassau BOCES Barry Tech and were impressed with what they saw. Barry Tech students explored a wide array of future college and career choices during the school’s second annual College Fair.

Students prepared well ahead of time, charting which schools offer programs of interest and developing a variety of questions. They grilled the reps on relevant topics from admissions requirements and financial aid to campus housing and activities. Among the colleges and institutions represented were Alfred

State College, Canton State University of New York, The Culinary Institute of America, Farmingdale State College, Hofstra University, Johnson and Wales University, Lincoln Technical Institute, Mercy College, Molloy College, New England Institute of Technology Queens College, Sacred Heart University and the Nassau County Police Department.

“Our students did a lot of preparation for the fair, and demonstrated tremendous interest and involvement in the process,” said Barry Tech Guidance Counselor Madeline Falino. “I believe they made an extremely positive first impression.”

A pair of Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA) piano students, Luke Gentil (Half Hollow Hills CSD) and Jeremy Kaplan (BellmoreMerrick CHSD), were featured performers at the Grace Music School’s official kickoff event for their Island-wide piano competition. The winner of the competition will earn $1,000 and will perform at Carnegie Hall.

At the event, Mr. Gentil performed two of his original compositions, “Billade No. 2” and

“Gentil Invention No. 1.”

Mr. Kaplan performed a medley of Billy Joel songs, beginning with “Waltz No. 2” from Fantasies & Delusions. He also performed the jazz standard “Blue Rondo a la Turk” by Dave Brubeck.

“Imagine our good fortune when Catherine Azzara, the Director of the Girl Scouts of Nassau County Chorus, became a member of Greater Nassau Chorus. Everyone knew immediately that bringing these two groups together was an amazing opportunity,” said GNC Master Director 700 Harriette Walters. “One of the goals of GNC is education, the mentoring of young women in the art of a cappella singing and barbershop harmony.

We invited the Girl Scouts chorus members, present and past, to rehearse with us and to perform at our annual holiday show.

GNC is a chapter of Sweet Adelines International (SAI), a worldwide organization of women singers committed to advancing the musical art form of barbershop harmony through education, competition and performance. Since 1960, the GNC has brought four-part a cappella music to Long Island.
