Helping Heels Once again, students at Robbins Lane Elementary School in Syosset helped make a life a little better for those in need. The student council and Chorus Cares groups organized the school’s annual footwear drive to benefit the Heeling Soles organization. Just in time for the winter weather, Robbins Lane students donated 276 pairs of shoes and boots to those in need.

Based on Long Island,

Heeling Soles travels the globe and physically places shoes and boots on the feet of people young and old.

Gently used and new shoes and boots were gathered in music teacher Dr. Catherine da Silva’s room.

Enrichment teacher/adviser Robin Kleinman and the student council helped to spread the word to students and staff, leading to another successful drive as the school community once

again answered the call with a generous response.

Steve Muir, a representative from Heeling Soles stopped by the school on December 12th to accept the donation.

Dr. da Silva and Kleinman were also delighted to see that their students learned the valuable lesson about the importance of helping in the greater community and the personal fulfillment that comes from it.

Soccer Squad Honored Congratulations to the Syosset High School boys varsity soccer team for earning a piece of this year’s Nassau County championship. The team advanced to the county championship game before falling in a shootout overtime session to Uniondale.

Although rules dictate

only the shootout winner may advance further in the playoffs, Syosset was named county cochampion for completing regulation time tied.

Syosset School District Coordinator of Athletics, Physical Education and Recreation Drew Cronin introduced the co-champs to the Syosset community

at a recent board of education meeting.

Members of the Syosset Board of Education, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Tom Rogers and head coach Brett Waxer all praised the team for its excellent season on the field, as well as its demonstration of great sportsmanship.

Each event will serve as a separate regional, with different teams competing in separate alliances and tournament rounds. Catching Snowflakes “We have only this moment, sparking like a star in our hand ~ and melting like a snowflake.” ~ Sir Francis Bacon As we approach the end of 2017 and look ahead to the new horizons of 2018, we reflect. Each year is full of its own moments, fleeting instants of happiness and sadness, anger and elation, all coming together to form this composite of life as we know it. And in those moments, we form the memories which carry us forward to the next chapter.

There are two schools of thought relating to this; the first is that things have the ability to change in the blink of an eye, to take on an entirely new, often unexpected

direction. This can be in the form of a beautiful surprise, or a tragic turn; there is simply no telling. We are well aware of these possibilities.

In fact, we will often remark how grateful we should be for the present, how appreciative of our blessings and those whom we love dearly. And yet, somewhere along the way, we tend to forget how very lucky we are.

Syosset High School’s National Art Honor Society has once again used its creative talents for good.

For 17 years, Syosset NAHS has participated in United Cerebral Palsy’s annual Festival of Trees fundraiser held at the Cradle of Aviation Museum, where they decorate a special

holiday tree to be sold to raise funds for UCP. This year’s NAHS contribution, “Stars and Stripes,” was the first to sell at the festival, just minutes after doors opened on November 24. The tree sold for $500. Moreover, the tree was awarded third place in the Festival of

Bethpage High School senior Clayton Santiago recently broke the school’s 5K record at Bethpage State Park, which qualified him for the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Cross Country Championships.

Clayton is the first Bethpage student since 2005 to qualify for the state championship.

Shedding seven seconds off the previously held Bethpage High School record, Clayton made school history with a time of 16 minutes, 24 seconds and placed among the top 50 of 150 runners at the state level competition.

He also received the 2017 NYSPHSAA Sportsmanship Award.

Every year, UCP raises money from admission fees to the exhibition and through the sale of decorated trees, which are sold to businesses around Long Island for display in their lobbies and windows.

Traditionally, 100 percent of the net proceeds from tree sales go directly to UCP. This year, 10 percent of these profits will be sent to select organizations assisting individuals with disabilities in the areas affected by the recent hurricanes.

The Syosset NAHS first participated in the Festival of Trees in 2001, when members designed a tree in tribute to the police officers and firemen who lost their lives on 9/11.

Runner Breaks Record Clayton is enrolled in honors and Advanced Placement courses, runs winter and spring track, is a member of the marine fitness and marine science clubs, and volunteers for the Bethpage P.A.L track program.

A Summer Poem for a Cold Winter Day

The Hicksville Public School District will offer its own limited PreKindergarten Program for the 2018-2019 school year.

The program, housed at Burns Avenue and Dutch Lane schools, with a possible expansion to Woodland School for next year, is lottery-based requiring completion of an application. There is no cost for the program.

To be eligible for the 2018-2019 PreKindergarten program, children must turn age 4 on or before Dec. 1, 2018. The Pre-Kindergarten calendar follows Hicksville’s school calendar. Each a.m. and p.m. session is two and a half hours in length and has a maximum of 18 children. Time preference will be considered, but not guaranteed.

Transportation is not provided.

Applications can be obtained from the district’s website, www. hicksvillepublicschools. org, at the Hicksville Public Library and at all seven elementary schools.

Osteoporosis ( N A P S ) — Osteoporosis—bone loss— is a serious condition that half of all women and many men can expect to develop at some time in their lives.

Fortunately, it can be detected and treated. In fact, women who have a bone density scan have 35 percent fewer hip fractures

than those who do not.

The problem is only 23 percent of eligible patients are scanned. The experts at the National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF) say that if you’re a woman over 65 or a man over 70 or if you’re over 50, postmenopausal and have risk factors for osteoporosis, you should

probably talk to your doctor or other health care provider about getting a bone density test, especially if you’ve never had one. Many doctors are learning more about this testing device at www. hologic.com.

During the Dec. 19 business meeting of the Bethpage UFSD Board of Education, the board unanimously appointed Bethpage High School Principal Michael Spence as the district’s next assistant superintendent for instruction, effective July 1st, 2018.

With more than 24 years of educational experience in the district, Mr. Spence brings a magnitude of knowledge to his new role. During his nineyear tenure as principal, Bethpage High School has been recognized as one of the finest high schools in the country by Newsweek and has been consistently designated as a Reward School by the New York State Education Department based on its outstanding academic performance and high student achievement.

As principal, Mr. Spence has expanded academic course offerings and addressed student interest

Challenge Day, CPR/AED training for all seniors, the freshmen health advisory, the Academic Center, onsite admissions and more.

He has also overseen the implementation of Chromebooks at the high school to further student learning and academic success.

Mr. Spence holds a Bachelor of Arts in history from Hamilton College, a Master of Arts in social studies/education from Adelphi University and a professional diploma in administration from LIU Post.

New Year’s Eve is upon us - a night filled with merriment, an abundance of food, plenty of alcohol, and of course those dreaded resolutions. For me, it became an annual ritual to tell myself this is the year you’re going to lose weight and get healthy.

This year is different for me and, for the first time, my goals have expanded.

I want to be more active and take advantage of my newfound energy, as opposed to engaging in activities simply to lose weight and not be in pain, short of breath, uncomfortable. I want to work out more and focus on specific areas, as opposed to going to the gym and struggling to work out comfortably in order to burn calories to lose a few pounds. I want to help more people realize their health goals. This is new...

First Tech Challenge Long Island Lutheran Middle & High School (LuHi) was once again home to FIRST® Tech Challenge Scrimmages – presented by SchoolBusiness Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. (SBPLI), which brought science and creativity together on a robotics playing field. On Saturday, December 9th and Sunday, December 10th, twenty-nine teams from across Long Island competed in a friendly tournament-style scrimmage that prepared them for the upcoming season of FIRST RELIC RECOVERYSM (presented

by Qualcomm).

Teams, comprised of students age 12 to 18, worked alongside adult mentors to design, build, program and operate robots to play a floor game in an alliance format on a 12-foot by 12-foot field.

This season, FIRST Tech Challenge teams across the world are asked to don their adventurers’ hats to create robots capable of retrieving opponentcolored jewels from platforms, scoring glyphs into crypto boxes, creating cipher patterns, moving “relics” to a recovery zone and parking their robots

on “balancing stones.”

FIRST Tech Challenge is an international program featuring hundreds of tournaments for more than 46,000 students in nearly 20 countries.

Students demonstrate their problem-solving skills, creative thinking, teamwork, competitive play, sportsmanship and sense of community.

During all FIRST Tech Challenge tournaments, teams work in alliances with the goal of scoring more points, awarded through accomplishing the aforementioned tasks, during 150 seconds of game play, which includes autonomous and drivercontrolled periods, on a 12-by-12-foot playing field.

Last weekend’s scrimmages were the first events in the 2017-2018 FIRST Tech Challenge season on Long Island.

Long Island students will then use these robots to compete in Qualifier tournaments at Lynbrook High School (Sunday, January 7th, 2018); Center Moriches High School (January 13th-14th, 2018); and Sewanhaka High School (January 27th28th, 2018). Students will compete at these

events for a chance to ultimately advance to the Championship tournament at Smithtown High School West (February 11, 2018).

“FIRST Tech Challenge is growing rapidly on Long Island and we are excited to see what this season holds,” says Janet Anderson, Program Director and SBPLI/FIRST Long Island representative.

The men’s lacrosse team from Farmingdale State College and Team 91 joined forces to bring holiday cheer to students with intellectual and other developmental disabilities at the Saul and Elaine Seiff

Educare Center.

Over 50 members from the men’s lacrosse team and Team 91 attended the event, bringing holiday cheer and gifts! All the gifts were purchased and donated by the teams with

each student’s needs in mind.

The students were delighted to see Santa and spend the day with the lacrosse players!

Dutch Lane Elementary School fifth-grader Amaiah Tucker was selected as the winner of the 2017 Hicksville Public School District Holiday Card Design Contest, and presented with a plaque at the board of education’s December meeting.

The district annually selects one winner from the various student entries submitted by art teachers across the district. The contest rotates between the three teaching levels — elementary, middle and high school — and thus promotes the work

Parental Engagement of students of various ages. Tucker’s design was selected as the finalist from a pool of works submitted by elementary school students, and it was used as the district’s holiday card this year as a result.

The Hicksville Public School District hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the grand opening of its Parent Center on December 13th. Located in the administration building, the space will be used to provide material, technical and human resources in order to inform, support and assist the families, parents and

community members of Hicksville.

Christmas Tree Drop-Off Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino today announced that the Town will have two drop-off locations for safe disposal of discarded Christmas trees after the holiday season concludes. The drop-off locations, which will be located at John J. Burns Park in Massapequa and William Bennett Community Center in Hicksville, offer residents a safe and environmentallyfriendly manner of disposal for those who do not wish to wait for their next yard waste collection date.

“We all love the beauty of

After the celebrations are over, it is important to discard the tree in a timely manner as Christmas trees can pose as a fire hazard, especially after drying out,” Supervisor Saladino said. “I recently partnered with the Massapequa Fire Department and the Nassau County Fire Marshall’s office to educate residents on the dangers Christmas trees can pose when not cared for properly. Proper and prompt disposal of a dried out tree is very important,

and I’m glad to be able to establish these dropoff locations for residents who wish to immediately dispose of their tree instead of waiting for their next scheduled yard waste collection day.”

Under the guidance of Nassau BOCES instructors, second-graders at Charles Campagne Elementary School in the Bethpage School District learned about the history and craftsmanship of early American settlers during the Colonial Era by making

their own cornhusk dolls.

Naturalists Bette Bass and Mary Watros explained how early settlers utilized resources from the land to survive, describing how they made clothing, fashioned pots and utensils, and built their homes.

Working in pairs, the

students created cornhusk dolls, a common toy from the era. After tying string around layers of cornhusk to construct a head, body and limbs, they dressed the dolls in fabric, creating ponchos, shirts and dresses.

A Mindful Lifestyle

Third and fourth-grade students in Lee Road Elementary School’s new Mindfulness Club gathered on the morning of Dec. 8 to learn the importance of mindful eating. Under the guidance of teacher Melanie Anderson, the students discussed the importance of mindfulness or the psychological process of bringing one’s attention to experiences occurring in the present moment.

Through the Mindfulness Club, students learn how to channel their emotions and observe their feelings. They also practice breathing techniques, discuss what being mindful does to an individual’s brain and find healthy ways to manage stress. During the meeting, Anderson read the book “No Ordinary Apple: A Story About Eating Mindfully” by Sara Marlowe. Following the book, each student

was given an apple and for ten minutes, learned that slowly eating and connecting with their food makes a difference. Using their senses, the students discussed how it felt to not eat the apple quickly and reflected on living in the moment.

“Next time I’m going to do this because I also have an apple for snack,” said third-grader Kristos Kovoros.

This is the second year that mindfulness has been embraced at Lee Road. In addition to the weekly club, Anderson created monthly Mindfulness Parent Workshops which kicked off in October. As a teacher at Lee Road for 22 years, Anderson is passionate about living mindfully and is currently enrolled in the Mindful Schools Year-Long Certification Program. She has also participated in silent retreats, completed several

courses in Mindfulness Meditation and the eightweek Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction Program.

The Mindfulness Parent Workshops, which Anderson will facilitate through March 2018, covers a variety of different topics on how to live in the present moment.

Previous sessions included practicing mindfulness meditation and mindful eating.

The program has been a success, with over 50 family members participating in the meditation workshop. The next parent workshop, “Mindfulness & ADHD” will be held at Lee Road on January 17th at 7 p.m.

“Research has shown that a significant predictor of students’ future success is their ability to selfcontrol,” said Anderson.

“It trumps any kind of social-economics status or even academic ability.

Being aware in the present moment is a great way for them to learn how to bring self-awareness to everyday experiences and turn reactions into responses.”

Sounds of the Season The Sanford H. Calhoun High School Concert Choir in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District was named one of

the winners of News 12’s Sounds of the Season.

News 12 Long Island visited the school to film a feature on the concert

choir on December 14th.

The choir will be featured as part of the News 12 Long Island’s morning show on a future air-date.

A Mindful Mood Grand Avenue Middle School has been piloting mindfulness and relaxation sessions for students on a voluntary basis throughout the school day.

“During these sessions, the students practice relaxation methods to assist in the reduction of stressful thoughts

and feelings,” explained organizer Dr. Maura Kempton, chairperson of special education at Grand Avenue.

Weekly sessions are being held during the final 20 minutes of lunch periods. The program will continue indefinitely.

“The response to the

program has been very positive and attendance has been strong,” said organizer and school psychologist Dr. Marla Bayles. “Middle school is a stressful time and the students really benefit from taking a break to focus on their physical and mental well-being.”

Spreading Warmth Student council members at East Broadway Elementary School recently hosted their annual winter coat drive to give back to those in need this holiday season. During the course of two and a half weeks, a total of 11 garbage bags full of coats were donated. The donations were brought to Division Avenue High School to

help with Division’s own coat drive to support Keep New York Warm.

The fourth and fifth grade students placed donation boxes throughout East Broadway where in addition to new or gently used winter coats, the students collected sweatshirts, hats, gloves and scarves.

“The student council

members were really excited to be a part of Division Avenue’s coat drive,” said student council advisor Jennifer Nadolny. “They made posters to hang up around the school as well as announcements to help remind and encourage the East Broadway community to bring in their coats to support those in need.”

Rensselaer Medalist Division Avenue High School senior Dylan Chase, was recently selected as the recipient of the Rensselaer Medal Award for excellence in mathematics and science. He will receive a $25,000 per year merit scholarship if he decides to enroll at the prestigious Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

The Rensselaer Medal has been presented to distinguished students each year to recognize their superlative academic achievement and to motivate students toward careers in science, engineering and technology.

Chase is currently enrolled in AP Economics,

AP Calculus BC, AP Physics II, and AP Literature/Composition.

He is also a member of Division Avenue’s football and wrestling teams, Key Club, Robotics Club, Peer Leaders, Mathletes, Math Honor Society, World Language Honor Society and the National Honor Society.

Leadership Seminar Set

Levittown sophomores Jacquelyn Devaney and Leah Draluck from Division Avenue High School and Julia Gizzo and John Hanna from General Douglas MacArthur High School have recently been selected to represent Levittown Public Schools at the Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership Seminar, to be held at Adelphi University in June of 2018.

The goal of the seminar is to empower high school sophomores to develop their leadership talents while participating in hands-on leadership skills workshops. The students will also have the opportunity to meet state leaders and learn how to make a positive impact in their community.

All four students have served as role models in their schools and in the community. Devaney is a member of the Business Honor Society, JV soccer

team, JV basketball team, Big Dragons/Little Dragons Club, Peer Pals, Key Club and serves as the vice president of DECA. She is also a Girl Scout, volunteers for Charitable Kids, is a lector at St. Bernard’s Church and recently worked at the Levittown Memorial Youth Camp.

Draluck is a member of the Science Olympiad team, Mathletes and recently spent her summer as a leadership intern at Camp Invention. She is also highly involved in music and performing, participating in the chamber chorus, chamber orchestra, Tri-M Music Honor Society and serving as a member of Division Avenue’s Show People and the International Thespian Society.

And, for those who didn’t feel well enough to leave their rooms, a mobile cart or iPad enabled with Cisco Jabber software helped Santa travel room-to-room for a personalized bedside visit – all of this without once leaving his workshop in the North Pole, according to the children.

“We’re so happy that Cisco was able to bring their expertise once again to Cohen during

this holiday season,” said Patricia Ottavanio, special events coordinator at Cohen Children’s. “Thanks to them, we are able to bring Santa to the children.

During this time of year, it’s very difficult for children and their loved ones to be away from home. Events such as these help make Chanukah and Christmas a happier time for these families.”

Brian and Keri Adams, of Central Islip, joined their infant son, Derek, in the playroom. Watching with happiness as he banged on a little drum, Derek’s parents said: “This event makes children feel like they’re not in the hospital.

We appreciate the effort being made by everyone here today to being Santa to our children.”
