lasses throughout Charles Campagne Elementary School in Bethpage recently read The Kindness Quilt, by Nancy Elizabeth Wallace. The book reading was part of the school’s month-long “Choose Kindness” campaign, which was a component of its Character Education program. In Art class, each student decorated a square based on the theme and then combined squares to create a quilt. Pictured are the students with their creations.

‘Tis The Season For Memories By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Christmas time is here, once again, and as we all prepare to celebrate the season with our families, friends and loved ones, I find myself reminiscing upon the many fond memories of Christmas’ past. With that sentiment in mind, some excerpts from last year’s Christmas column…

As I prepare to host my very first holiday gathering in my new apartment this Christmas Eve, I cannot help but reflect upon the many wonderful memories from past celebrations, most of which took place in the comfort and warmth of Grandma and Grandpa’s house.

So many years spent gathered around the big dining room table each Christmas Eve, of “helping” Grandma

bake her famous Christmas cookies (basically watching and waiting and then sneaking a couple as soon as they came out of the oven), of marveling at the gigantic Christmas tree and the beautiful decorations… of hoping that, one day, I would be lucky enough to have a house as beautiful and as full of love as Grandma and Grandpa’s.

Well, my little apartment gathering may be coming together on a bit of a smaller scale, but the sentiment is the same. Any time family and loved ones get together to celebrate, memories are made – and preserved for future generations to appreciate, and add to. My only hope is that they are never lost.

I was fortunate to have the opportunity to put together a project back in college for my Family

Literacy class which asked us to illustrate one family tradition through words and photographs, providing details and dialogue, recipes and anecdotes, creating a scrapbook of memories. I chose Christmas Eve and all the traditions that came with it for my family for the first 20 or so years of my life… from our traditional “table photo” taken from the top of the staircase, to my Uncle Al mixing the martinis as we arrived and, later on, after the first three or so courses of dinner, fighting with me for that last fried shrimp. How precious that project is today.

By the time you read this, my little celebration will have come and gone, and with it, new memories made. Who knows, maybe one day it will become the stuff of scrapbook legend!

The American Lung Association of the Northeast is seeking charity runners to support its lifesaving mission by running in the 2015 United Airlines NYC Half marathon on Sunday, March 15th.

The Lung Association has four remaining guaranteed entry charity bibs available for runners who commit to raising $2,500 dollars each to support the Lung Association’s ongoing efforts to promote healthy lungs and healthy air.

Runners who have already gained entry to the NYC Half are also invited to join and fundraise with the American Lung Association of the Northeast’s 2015 NYC Half Marathon Team.

Last year half marathon runners contributed nearly $13,000 to support the Lung Association’s mission of saving lives by preventing lung disease and improving lung health.

To commemorate National Gingerbread Day on December 12th, students at Old Country Road School in the Hicksville School District used mathematics to create gingerbread houses.

Fourth-graders in

Christine Moir’s class identified the polygons on their gingerbread houses, measured angles and computed the areas and perimeters of the roofs.

Students then applied icing to hold together the sides of each house and

used Skittles to colorfully decorate them. The activity served as an educational way for students to participate in a fun holiday tradition.

Fourth-graders at Old Country Road Elementary School in the Hicksville School District participated in daylong workshops about Native American culture.

The students took part

in hands-on activities featuring artifacts and listened to stories about how Native Americans lived and made use of their resources. A hut was set up for students to walk through, and students also

studied different animal furs, traditional drums and other items representing the rich culture of Native Americans.

Under the direction of fifth-grade teacher Allison Robb, Central Boulevard Elementary School has launched a math club for fourth- and fifth-grade students.

The club provides an

outlet for students to practice higher-order thinking in math through the use of fun games and activities. In its first year, the club has 25-35 students attend each week to play hands-on, interactive

games that utilize larger mathematical concepts such as probability, ‘math magic’ and problem solving skills.

Those looking for something fun to do this holiday break will be happy to know that all Town of Oyster Bay ice rinks will be offering a special Holiday Schedule beginning on Christmas Eve, Wednesday, December 24th through January 2nd, 2015.

The Town of Oyster Bay ice skating holiday schedule will be begin with public sessions at all three rinks on Christmas Eve, Wednesday, December 24th, from 10 a.m. to 12 noon, and 1 to 3 p.m. All rinks will be closed on Christmas Day, December 25th. Skate rentals will be available for $4 per pair per session at all facilities.

Discount books for skate rentals are also available at all rinks for $35.

Checking their shopping lists and staying within their allotted budgets, the children happily shopped for presents for their family and friends. Some students even picked up a treat for themselves! Many parent volunteers were on

hand to assist the students with their shopping, ring up their purchases, and wrap their gifts.
