In regards to their IRIS program, IRIS stands for Immediate Recognition Increases Safety. This program is free and anyone can register for at www. afyi-iris.org (parents or guardians can register and enroll their child or dependent as a member and those who are over 18 years can register and enroll themselves). The program is dedicated to the safety of those on the Autism Spectrum and those with Neurological or Brain Disorders. This includes those with Alzheimers, MS, Intellectual Development Disabilities, Down’s Syndrome, Brain Injury, PTSD and others. Another part of their IRIS program is their communication app, which is available for free in the app stores.

Legislator Nicolello stated, “Since its opening on D-Day, June 6, 2014, the Armor Museum has served as a lasting tribute to our veterans while becoming a vibrant educational destination for a new generation of students. This restoration building, combined with the museum’s recent decision to retain a respected educational professional to further strengthen its role as a classroom resource, underscores the importance of this museum as an educational resource.”

Nassau County Executive Laura Curran observed, “A unique strength of the Armor Museum is its ability to operate its historic vehicles within the wooded surroundings

of Old Bethpage Village Restoration. It recreates a moment in time for the visitor when the very future of freedom was at stake. Ensuring that these

vehicles can continue that role is essential, and the restoration building will guarantee that future.”

The Museum of American Armor has some

40 operational military vehicles within its building on the grounds of Nassau County’s Old Bethpage Village Restoration. Open year around, its current

hours are Friday to Sunday, 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. An admission donation of $15 for adults is requested, $10 for seniors and veterans, and $8 for children.

Plainview Water District Calls on Residents to ‘Adopt-A-Hydrant’ This Winter The colder winter months are here, and soon there will be snow in the forecast. The Plainview Water District (PWD) would like to stress the importance of keeping fire hydrants across the Plainview-Old Bethpage community clear of snow and other winter debris.

Hydrants that remain free of snow can save first responders precious time when responding to an emergency situation.

“The arrival of more consistent cold weather provides for a great

opportunity to remind our residents about the important responsibility they have of ensuring hydrants are kept clear this winter,” said PWD Chairman Marc Laykind.

“As a community, we owe it to our dedicated firefighters to make sure they always have quick and easy access to fire hydrants at all times. Every moment counts when responding to an emergency, so please keep your hydrants clear.”

Residents are encouraged to “adopt” a nearby hydrant so there

is a dedicated person responsible in keeping it clear during a snowstorm as well as reporting any potential issues. Clearing three feet of snow around the hydrant will allow firefighters to not only identify their locations with ease, but also provide uninterrupted access during a potential emergency.

“An emergency can occur at any point, so we encourage all of our residents to never assume the fire hydrant in front of their home won’t

be needed,” said PWD Commissioner Andrew Bader. “All residents are asked to speak with their neighbors before the snow starts to fall so there is no question about who will be taking responsibility for clearing the hydrant in a timely fashion.”

The District is also asking its residents to consider providing assistance to any friends, family members, or neighbors who are not able to clear their own hydrants. Those who leave their homes for the winter season are asked to please

notify a neighbor who can ensure a hydrant is still cleared in their absence.

“Our community’s safety is our top priority at all times, and the District wants to ensure this simple, yet important step is never overlooked,” said PWD Commissioner Amanda Field. “All of us at the Plainview Water District appreciate the attention our residents pay to this crucial task and thank them in advance for doing their part in protecting our community.”

The Nassau County Legislature Rules Committee has approved a resolution that confirms Nassau County’s commitment to fund a half million dollar matching grant that will permit the Museum of American Armor to build a much needed maintenance/repair facility behind its main building inside Old Bethpage Village Restoration.

Proposed by Nassau County Executive Laura Curran, the Legislature’s Presiding Officer Richard Nicolello moved the grant resolution in a bipartisan show of support for the Armor Museum and its mission.

The matching half million dollar county grant is being met by corporate and private donations that will allow construction to commence this spring. The structure is envisioned as a prefabricated “Butler” building sized to

Puppets Come To Life Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts is proud to have puppet theater veteran Brad Brewer at Long Island High School for the Arts for a puppeteering artist residency for the 2021/22 school year.

In this unique Master Class, LIHSA students work directly with Mr. Brewer to design, construct, and bring their own puppets to life on-stage. The class culminated with an interactive puppet show and children’s workshop event at the Long Island Children’s Museum in Garden City.

Mr. Brewer trained under Jim Henson, creator

of “The Muppets” and has decades of experience in all aspects of puppet theater, including design, sculpture, painting and performing. As the founder of New York City puppet troupe “The Brewery Troupe” in 1973, Brad used his skills and creativity to interpret African American literature, music, and humor through the art of puppet theater. A collection of his puppets is housed at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History in Washington D.C. Puppets from his production of “Duke’s Place” are featured through April 2022 at the Museum of the City of New

York in Manhattan.

Long Island High for the Arts (“LIHSA”) offers emerging artists the opportunity to explore and refine their talents in a one-of-a-kind, master apprentice, arts-centered community. Nestled in Syosset, NY, students learn in a safe and supportive environment where they can pursue their artistic passion and discover who they are as individuals and as artists.
