Nassau Offers Holiday Cheer The 2019 holiday season is upon us and Nassau County is offering a wide range of festive and affordable activities throughout County Parks, Museums and other facilities including an 1860s-style Thanksgiving, personalized letters from Santa, gingerbread cookie workshops, a holiday celebration for military families, and free performances by a symphony orchestra, to name a few.

The County’s Department of Parks, Recreation and Museums manages more than 70 parks, preserves, museums, historic properties, and athletic facilities spanning 6,000 acres. While parks fill with residents, sports leagues, concert goers and campers during warmer weather, the County has organized a variety of activities to entertain residents of all ages throughout the holiday and winter season.

“Continuing to enhance our Parks and expand their fun and unique seasonal programs is key to making Nassau a better place for people to live, work and play,” said Nassau County Executive Laura Curran. “I want to encourage families to celebrate the season right here in Nassau County and take advantage of all the holiday happenings and winter activities we have to offer.”

On Saturday, December 21st from 4-7 pm Last Hope Animal Rescue will be continuing a holiday tradition begun in 1998.

They will be hosting “Trees of Love” at the Last Hope Adoption Center located at 3300 Beltagh Avenue in Wantagh. Refreshments will be served after the tree illumination ceremony.

There will also be raffle basket prizes. Wear an Ugly Christmas sweater to

add to the festivities.

Previous to the lighting of two decorated trees, participants purchase ribbons for $10 each.

Gold ribbons honor living pets and red ribbons memorialize late pets.

Pets’ names are written on the ribbons. A third tree is decorated in green ribbons only, but these are to remember the countless discarded pets throughout the country euthanized

each year at overcrowded shelters.

Supporters can also purchase these symbolic ribbons.

In addition to the group’s academic success, 75% of all varsity student athletes received the NYSPHSAA Individual Scholar Athlete Award.

This award is given to any varsity student athlete who has individually achieved a GPA of 90 or above.

“These awards are a remarkable achievement for our interscholastic athletic teams and demonstrate a true commitment to education

from our student athletes, coaches, teachers and staff,” said Dr. Lorna Lewis, Superintendent of the Plainview-Old Bethpage Central School District.

The NYSPHSAA is a non-profit, voluntary, educational service organization composed of public, parochial, and private schools dedicated to providing equitable and safe competition for the students of its member schools.

The Symphonic Pops of Long Island, an intergenerational orchestra of approximately 60 musicians all living on Long Island, will present a program of music on Sunday, December 22, at 2 pm at Brookside School, 1260 Meadowbrook, Road, North Merrick. The program will include: Chariots of Fire, Harry Potter Suite, Dance of the Tumblers, music from Frozen and other favorites.

The Orchestra will once again be joined in concert with a special appearance by dancers from Oceanside Dance Center.

The Orchestra (formerly known as the “Senior Pops Orchestra of Long Island”) is led by Stephen Michael

Smith who has been Music Director since 2011. His guest conducting credits include: The Wroclaw Philharmonic (Poland), St. Petersburg Camerata (Russia), Karlovy Vary Philharmonic (Czech Republic) in addition to conducting various orchestras across the Country.

Mr. Smith also currently serves as Music Director for the Unitarian Universalist Congregation at Shelter Rock in Manhasset. The Symphonic Pops recently performed at the Long Island State Veterans Home in Stony Brook where 350+ Veterans were in attendance.

This concert is open to the public and a

suggested donation of $10 will be requested at the door (kids are free). The facility is handicapped accessible, and there is adequate free parking. The Symphonic Pops of Long Island is a communitybased volunteer orchestra under the direction of Stephen Michael Smith.

The orchestra provides Long Island with the opportunity to enjoy various genres of music at a reasonable price. It is funded by sponsorships, grants and donations and was established in 1979. On June 14th the Orchestra will be celebrating its 40th year with a 40-year Gala.
