Students Give Thanks

everal schools in the Syosset School District held Thanksgiving celebrations this year. At Village Elementary School, every student and every staff member was invited into the school gymnasium to enjoy turkey with all of the appropriate trimmings. Village parents volunteered to serve those dining, while some students donned school spirit T-shirts and others made paper hats to wear during the feast. A great time was had by all.

dialogue from many district administrators regarding their favorite books and discussion on why reading is so important on the road to achieving success. The various team captains shared their favorite books with the young students, and offered helpful advice. The third-graders were then divided into teams, with senior athletes

providing guidance through basketball challenges. Throughout the rest of the year, the captains will visit the younger students in their classrooms to help inspire them both athletically and academically.

Students at Burns Avenue Elementary School in the Hicksville Public School District celebrated Thanksgiving by participating in a variety of activities prior to

the holiday. Dressed as either Pilgrims or Native Americans, students spoke about what they are thankful for, created festive wreaths

and enjoyed healthy Thanksgiving meals. The activities served as a fun and informative way for students to understand the significance and historical context of Thanksgiving.

Christmas has always been one of my favorite holidays. From when I was a child, there was something about the twinkling lights, the anticipation of a first snowfall, and of course the presents under the tree that evoked just a bit of… magic, really. All these years later, some of the mystery may be gone, but the sentiment remains the same. As this particular holiday season approached, it was difficult not to let some of the melancholy feelings seep in. This has been a year of multiple losses and sadness for my family, and somehow the thought of “celebrating” seemed wrong and, well, downright impossible. How to carry on traditions when so

And so, I set out to find that happy medium, of honoring all the wonderful memories I had compiled from years past – but not going overboard. I chose to keep it simple… white lights in the windows, greenery outside, and special emphasis on all those holiday tokens I had acquired from Grandma and Grandpa’s house. There will be plenty of years to go all out, to deck the halls from top to bottom with flashy colored lights and six-foot trees and tinsel and holly galore. But not this year. This year, I choose to focus on family – on those who are no longer with us, and on those we are still so lucky to be celebrating with. Here’s to remembering what’s most important at this time of year, and always.

My Little Christmas much has changed… For me, even the prospect of decorating, a task I had always looked forward to with great enthusiasm, had lost some of its luster. Was it appropriate? Was it worth going through all the trouble of digging out boxes, climbing stepladders and assembling a tree when my heart wasn’t truly in it? I didn’t know. As the weeks passed and Thanksgiving came and went, I needed to make a decision; and so, I reached a compromise of sorts. Having recently had the privilege to inherit some of my grandparents’ more prized Christmas decorations – including several gorgeous, hand-painted ceramic figurines made by my grandmother – I decided it would only be right to display them.

Author Visits Burns Students at Burns Avenue Elementary School in the Hicksville Public School District received a visit from author Dan Yaccarino, who spoke about some of his work and

discussed the importance of reading among other life lessons in a series of workshops. With some of his books displayed, Yaccarino offered perspectives on his

experiences as an author, illustrator and television producer, and students had the opportunity to ask questions in an interactive forum.

influential in coordinating the feast. Once again, South Grove Elementary School said thanks to local firefighters, police officers, and veterans with a traditional Thanksgiving feast in the kindergarten/ grade 1 annex. Dressed in various costumes, students sang songs to entertain their heroes under the direction of music teacher Dr. Kathleen Conklin. Christina Mancuso, the school’s developmental reading specialist and lead teacher, coordinated the event. The school also held

Letters of Intent Syosset High School held its National Commitment Day for athletes on November 15th. Fourteen of Syosset’s most distinguished studentathletes signed National Letters of Intent to play their respective sports at the collegiate level during a ceremony before family, faculty and coaches. Students donned caps from their school of choice as they signed their respective letters. Drew Cronin, the district’s coordinator of health, physical education and athletics, hosted the event in conjunction with boys varsity lacrosse coach John Calabria. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Thomas Rogers was also on hand

to congratulate the students on this special accomplishment. Coaches were invited to speak about their teams’ members. The National Letter of Intent is a binding agreement between a prospective student-athlete and a postsecondary institution. The student agrees to attend the school fulltime and the school agrees to provide a financial scholarship for at least one academic year. Opera Lesson Through an ongoing partnership with the International Vocal Arts Institute, Metropolitan Opera Assistant Conductor Joan Doarnemann and several opera singers visited Syosset High School to perform segments from various operas and answer questions from students enrolled in the school’s music programs. The partnership between IVAI and the Syosset School District has been in place for nearly 20 years. The first several workshops held this year took place

throughout the day on Oct. 14. Students were treated to performances that demonstrated the great vocal range required to be successful in this demanding art form. Singers discussed the physical demands of preparing their voices and answered students’ questions following each performance. Students were also asked to give their interpretations and impressions about the performances they had just experienced. Additional IVAI visits are planned for

Coschignano to announce the annual kick-off of this year’s “Toys for Tots” collection drive, which will run through December 15th, in an effort to collect new, unwrapped toys to be used as gifts for children throughout the community. “Under the direction of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve, the ‘Toys for Tots’ Drive follows a mission to help ensure that children in need, within our area, do not have to go the holiday season without something to bring them happiness,” Councilman

Coschignano said. “By helping those in need experience the wonderful embrace of the holiday season, contributors will get to play an active role in bringing happiness to one of our nation’s most valuable resources for the future, our children,” Councilman Macagnone said. Oyster Bay Town Councilwomen Rebecca M. Alesia and Michele M. Johnson announced that the Town is accepting nomination forms for the annual “Women of Distinction” awards program. “Each year, the Town recognizes exceptional recipients in each of eight categories,” Councilwoman Alesia said. “Since the program’s inception, the Town is privileged to have honored more than 140 designees.” “The Town Board recognizes the winners at a special ceremony held in honor of women’s history month,” Councilwoman Johnson said. “Nominees can either live or work in the Town of Oyster Bay.” The Councilwomen noted that nomination forms have been mailed to local community organizations, all local libraries, and are available on the Town’s website, www.oysterbaytown.com. Basic STAR Property Tax Exemption (New York State School Tax Relief) program provides an exemption from school property taxes for owner-occupied, primary residences with an annual household income of $500,000 or less. Current Basic Star Exemption recipients will keep their exemption as long as they continue to own their current homes. Enhanced STAR Property Tax Exemption (New York State School Tax Relief) exemption is available to senior citizen homeowners who are 65 years of age or older during the year in which the exemption takes effect, and whose annual income does not exceed $86,000. Senior citizens whose annual income exceeds $86,000 will still be eligible for the Basic STAR exemption. Current Enhanced Star Exemption recipients will keep their exemption as long as they continue to own their current homes. Current recipients who are not enrolled in the Income Verification Program must continue to file renewal application with the Department of Assessment each year. Senior Citizen exemption provides a tax savings for individuals

over the age of 65, whose income is less than $37,400. To participate and receive this tax savings (between 5% and up to 50% reduction on certain county, town and school district property taxes) specific qualification criteria must be met. Veterans Exemption is for those individuals who rendered service to our country during wartime. The eligibility to receive this exemption and amount to be exempted depends upon the time, duration and type of service, along with other criteria. Cold War Veterans Exemption is for veterans who served during the Cold War period. The Law also provides an additional exemption to disabled veterans. Gold Star Parent Exemption is available for the parent of a child who died in the line of duty while serving in the United States Armed Forces during a period of war, as defined in NYS Real Property Tax Law. Physically Disabled Tax Reduction Program for Home Improvements is granted to those persons who are physically disabled and meet the criteria. It is equal to the amount of any increase in value of

property attributable to improvements made for the purpose of facilitating and accommodating the use and accessibility of the property. Persons With Disabilities and Limited Incomes Partial Property Tax Exemption is available to eligible applicants who have a physical or mental impairment, not due to use of alcohol or illegal drug use, that substantially limits that person’s ability to engage in one or more major life activities, such as caring for one’s self, performing manual tasks, walking, seeing, hearing, speaking, breathing, learning or working. The requirements to qualify are based on the person’s disability, ownership, residency and occupancy status, and income. Persons with incomes less than $37,400 can qualify to receive an exemption from 5% to 50%. Home Improvement Exemption is an eight-year decreasing exemption on alterations, reconstructions or improvements that increase the assessed value of a one or two family home. Certain eligibility requirements must be met to participate in this program. 1st Time Home Buyers of Newly Constructed Homes may apply for and receive a partial real property tax exemption. The maximum exemption is offered over five years, starting with a 50 percent exemption the first year and phasing to 10 percent in the fifth and final year. Homebuyers are subject to certain price and income limits set by the State of New York Mortgage Agency (SONYMA). Volunteer Firefighter and Ambulance Worker Exemption is available to eligible firefighters and ambulance workers. Up to 10 percent reduction in the assessed value of their property can be obtained to volunteers who have served at least five years in a Town of Oyster Bay Fire Department in which they reside. Certain eligibility requirements must be met to participate in this program. Nearly 500 Long Island educators gathered this past November for a daylong series of workshops and lectures focused on improving early childhood education. The “Best Practices for Teaching Pre-K and K” Conference was presented by the Long Island Pre-K Initiative and featured some of the region’s most important and progressive opinion leaders in preschool education. The Long Island Pre-K Initiative identifies challenges to preschool education in Nassau and Suffolk Counties and develops strategies to meet those challenges, such as sharing resources and best practices, offering professional development, disseminating information, and strengthening partnerships between schools and their communities. The initiative is administered by Nassau BOCES, in partnership with Child Care Council of Nassau and Suffolk, and Eastern and Western Suffolk BOCES, with expertise from The Early Years Institute. It is funded through a grant co-administered by the Rauch and Hagedorn Foundations. “Play is disappearing from children’s activities outside of school,” said Keynote Speaker Nancy

Carlsson-Paige, citing one of the most critical challenges to early childhood education. “Play and learning in the early years is the same thing,” she explained. “Children all over the world play and there is a reason why: It’s what drives human development.” Ms. Carlsson-Paige is Professor Emerita at Lesley University and was a Founder of the University’s Center for Peaceable Schools. She has received many awards for leadership and advocacy in early childhood education and has written extensively on the subject, including her most recent book, “Taking Back Childhood: A Proven Roadmap for Raising Confident, Creative, Compassionate Kids.” Also on-hand were Roger Tilles from the New York State Board of Regents, National Early Childhood Specialist Keith L. Pentz, and a host of teachers, administrators and board members. “This conference is part of the important work that we are all doing together,” said Executive Director of the Nassau BOCES Department of Strategic Initiatives Lucinda Hurley, in her Welcome Address, “It is part of the incredible work that you do every day, supporting Long Island’s young learners and their

families. That work is critical to the success of our region and our nation as a whole. It builds the foundation that fosters success in learning and relationships that last throughout lifetimes.” “This event brought together a broad spectrum of professionals from across Long Island who are invested in what’s best for young children,” said Conference Chairperson Adrienne Robb-Fund. “Children need to be taught differently when they are younger, and this conference provides educators with the opportunity to share best practices and developmentally appropriate strategies.” Ms. Robb-Fund went on to explain that the initiative also seeks to increase state aid to early childhood education on Long Island, which currently receives the smallest percentage of aid in the state. “Research has shown that students in quality preschool programs have better outcomes both in school and after graduation,” she said. “Educators and parents on Long Island understand the value of having greater access to these programs. We need to make our leaders up in Albany understand that value as well.”

Manager and dancer from the renowned Twyla Tharp dance company, Alex Brady, leads an exclusive dance lesson for Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA) Dance students. These select students were granted a unique opportunity to be trained in a Master Class by an expert to help them improve their dance skills. Brady, who was also with the Broadway show “Movin’ Out” and performed with the Joffrey Ballet, taught the LIHSA students dance routines that would help build the quality of their performances for their future endeavors in the dancing field. When he asked how many students want to be dancers, they all raised their hands. Brady described his class as “not only teaching the students how to dance, but why they are doing these moves.” It is evident that LIHSA

is adamant about providing their students with the necessary tools to succeed within their school, hobbies and careers in the future. Children’s Holiday Party Continued From 9 There is no cost for the families to attend the event. The Lions Club Holiday Party for Children is an annual event for Lions Club District 20K2, and last year, the event hosted almost 350 children from the local area. Lion District Governor, Nina Lanci, is hoping this year’s number will far surpass last year’s in attendance. “Last year was amazing. To see the look of excitement on the children’s faces when they saw Santa standing by a huge wall of presents was pure magic. This year, we expect to host at least 500 children and their family members and we’ve

planned great day that is sure to create special memories for years to come,” stated Lanci. Lanci, who serves as District Governor for the Lions Club 20K2 of Nassau County & Bermuda, states the district’s theme this year is “Community, Caring, Children, Compassion and Connection,” and the holiday party is the perfect venue for Lions to aid others in their community, especially children. Although gifts and many items for the event are donated by generous businesses and members of the community, the Lions fund the majority of the event. “These families in our area are struggling and

deserve a day to just relax, laugh and watch their children embrace the excitement of the season. You can’t put a dollar amount on helping others: it’s the right thing to do and what this club, and Lions all over the world, stand for,” stated Lanci.
