John Theissen Children’s Foundation is Celebrating Their

28th

Holiday Season Helping Sick & Underprivileged Children! the beginning of what has become the year round organization, John Theissen Children’s Foundation. Since 1992, this organization has collected over 1 million new toys and have donated them to sick and underpriviledged children in over 180 hospitals and child-care facilities. However, this Foundation does more than just collect and distribute toys. They also provide hospitals and childcare facilities with therapeutic and recreational equipment, support families with financial assistance to defray medical expenses, fulfill patient’s wishlists throughout the year (for those 18 years of age and younger) and they assist sick and underpriviledged children in other ways that are needed. On December 5th at 6:30PM, John Theissen Children’s Foundation will be hosting A Night of Champions Holiday Gala! This Gala will feature one of New York’s biggest and best live auctions, great raffles, door prizes, gourmet dishes provided by 2nd Street Gourmet, desserts provided by Francesco’s Bakery and a VIP Lounge Meet & Greet with celebrity professional athletes. Admission is $50 and VIP admission is $350. To purchase a ticket, please visit

eventbrite.com/jtcf. Additionally, you can get involved with this Foundation in various different ways. You can donate a toy to their Annual Toy & Fund Holiday Drive, going on now through December 22nd , (please visit www. jtcf.org for dropoff locations) and you can donate monetarily at www. jtcf.org or by mailing a check to John Theissen Children’s Foundation, 1881 Wantagh Avenue, Wantagh, NY 11793 to support their mission. You can also volunteer by organizing your own toy drive, helping at fundraising events or distributing flyers. Lastly, this holiday season you can provide a child with a specific item that he/she requested. If you wish to do this, please contact John at John@JTCF.org. This holiday season and always, let us count our blessings, give to those in need and make a difference in the world. For more information about this Foundation, please call 516.679.5098 or email John@JTCF. org.

John Theissen Children’s Foundation began after their Executive Director & Founder, John Theissen, had stayed at Schneider’s Children’s Hospital in New Hyde Park when he was 17 years old. John needed to have brain surgery for a brain tumor that he unfortunately developed. The day he walked into the hospital he met a 7 year old girl named Tasha. She spent many hours with John for the next few days, always trying to make him happy. Tasha received very little family support, however she expected her family to attend a holiday party that was sponsored by the hospital staff. Unfortunately they did not attend. John was too ill to take her, so his family did. When Santa asked her what she had wanted she replied, “I would like a teddy bear for my friend upstairs.” John felt fortunate to be that friend. Tasha’s positive attitude and generous spirit inspired John. Once he got out of the hospital he wanted to help children just like her. In 1992, John held a toy drive during the holiday season to benefit children in local hospitals. During this first drive, he collected over 800 new toys in just 2 weeks! That was

Students and families from Woodland Elementary School in Hicksville recently spent their Saturday assembling baskets of food donations to ensure that some local families can enjoy a proper Thanksgiving feast. Approximately 16 baskets were created and are being donated to Woodland families who will benefit

the most from this special contribution. Students have been bringing food donations to school for more than a month. According to Principal Beth Swanson, they were asked to bring in a different food item every week to accommodate these special Thanksgiving baskets. For every food donation, students

received a feather to hang on turkeys in the hallway. Those that helped to create the baskets were able to see their contributions come together for the benefit of Woodland families. “It was a huge success,” Swanson said. “It’s extra special to see the entire project through from start to finish.”

Celebrating Soaring Eagles Day John F. Kennedy Middle School in the Bethpage Union Free School District celebrated Soaring Eagles Day recently. The day centered around two inspiring assemblies, “Socializing without Social Media” by Scott Baker and “Healthy Decisions: Do One Thing Different” by

Steve Pinto. The message of the day was dedicated to the importance of possessing good character and the power of making good choices. Soaring Eagles Day concluded with a pep rally, during which each sports team displayed the special cause that they

had brought awareness to during their season. JFK students also surprised and honored their school nurses as “Unsung Heroes” during the pep rally, presenting them with hearts with messages on them from the entire school.

Breast Cancer Hotline Volunteers Needed

The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program seeks breast cancer survivors of all ages, race and ethnicity-men as well as women-to become volunteers. Thus, the program seeks a diverse group of volunteers to reflect the diversity of the people who are calling the hotline. The three-day training program will take place

on consecutive Tuesdays— January 14, 21 and 28, from 10am to 1 pm at Adelphi University in Garden City. This in-depth training includes presentations by nurse navigators and social workers on basic breast cancer education, active listening skills, and tips on engaging the community. “It is so important for people who call our hotline to speak with someone

who has been there,’” says social worker Alida Rubenstein, volunteer and hotline coordinator. To arrange an interview, contact Ms. Rubenstein at 516 877-4315; email: arubenstein@adelphi.edu To reach the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline, call 800-8778077. You are not alone.

Thoughtful Thursday Fourth graders in Maureen Luca’s class at Central Boulevard School in the Bethpage Union Free School District celebrated Thoughtful Thursday by decorating placemats for Meals on Wheels Recipients. Thoughtful Thursday is a monthly activity that allows students to contribute to

their local community through various acts of kindness. For November, students decorated Thanksgiving placemats with colorful drawings and positive messages for local Meals on Wheels recipients. The nonprofit organization provides meals for members
