Pillowcase Project

ourth-graders at Robbins Lane Elementary School in Syosset recently participated in an emergency education program about personal and family preparedness, local hazards and basic coping skills.

Provided by the American Red Cross, the “Pillowcase Project” led students through a “learn, practice, share” framework to engage them in disaster preparedness to be ready in case of a fire, hurricane or other major disturbance.

The Syosset High School Association for Creative Thespians recently presented their rendition of Arthur Miller’s “The Crucible” set during the infamous Salem witch trials of the 1690s.

Miller wrote the play as an allegory of McCarthyism, a topic covered by the high school social studies curriculum. A percentage

of the proceeds from “The Crucible” will be donated to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.

Dear Community, I am writing this letter to ask for your prayers and any help you can give to beautiful “Mighty” Maya, who was born June 17th, 2015 with a rare neurological disorder called Hemimegalence phaly. This disorder causes catastrophic epileptic seizures that, in time, could severely debilitate Maya’s cognition and even kill her. Anti-seizure medi cation will not work to control her seizures. The only way to help Maya live a productive and fulfilling life is to have her undergo radical surgery, a hemisphe rectomy, that disconnects the “bad” half of her brain. Maya’s parents are asking for donations to be used toward the cost of everything associated with Maya’s journey, from travel, to medical needs, to physical and occup ational therapy, among other expenses. We know that Mighty Maya is stron g enough for the challenges ahead and we thank you for helping her get there by either spreading the word and donating to her cause.

At the age of only four months, Maya had her brain surgery on October 28th, to disconnect the “bad” half of her brain , at Boston Children’s Hospital. After being in ICU for a number of days, Maya is now recovering in inpatient care, where she started receiving physi cal therapy soon after her brain surgery.

Student Spotlight TRAVELING BACK IN TIME TO THE 1920’S SUBMITTED BY: KRISTIN DITRANO, AGE 11, FAIRFIELD ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

On October 27th, Fairfield School, also known as Massapequa Avenue School, turned ninety. The fifth and sixth grade gathered together and learned about our school and how special it truly is. At the end of the ceremony, the historical society unveiled an historical marker.

Some things I learned about the early days of our school are: there weren’t houses surrounding our school like today; there were open fields with cows. I also learned the kids didn’t ride on the bus to school; they walked, rode a bike or road in a carriage pulled by a horse, if they were lucky. Fairfield School only had one room that held multiple grades. The last thing I learned was a classroom could have up to 30 children but only have one teacher.

In the 1920’s, Sebastian Hilton invented a contraption that changed the life of many children. This contraption was invented in Chicago, where Sebastian and his mathematical father lived. Mr. Hilton invented the jungle gym! Sebastian’s father wanted to build a play structure that kids could play on and learn about x, y and z coordinates at the same time. This invention is important because the jungle gym is an object enjoyed by many children. I can connect to the invention of the jungle gym because every time I go to the park, I play on the three dimensional figure and it entertains many kids.

In the 1920’s, the stock market crashed and many people lost all their life savings.

started to live in Hoovervilles.

People made houses out of boxes and other scrap material they found. Hoovervilles were found all over the country, but some major Hoovervilles were found in St.Louis, Missouri, Seattle and Washington. This event took place in the 1920’s and ended in 1929. This event is important because many people were homeless for many years because of the stock market. I can connect to this because whenever I go to the city, I see homeless people living in cardboard boxes and this reminds me of Hoovervilles.

As you can see, the 1920’s was a challenging time because of the crash in the stock market.

This major event will be put down in history just like our school was on October 27th.

An Ode to My Human By: Jamie Lynn Ryan “Tis the time of year to be thankful, and I’d like to take this opportunity to acknowledge my Human, as I’ve been told by many fans that I am far too tough on her, what with my lack of fancy accommodations and inconsistent feeding schedule. I suppose I have been a bit harsh in my criticisms. Us bettas tend to have one-track minds, you know.

In truth, I do appreciate the love and attention she shows me – and she has been better of late with notifying me when dinner is going to be delayed. Speaking of, I hear there’s a large meal coming up – a Thanksgiving, I believe it’s called – where humans

gather ‘round to eat a large stuffed bird. What a disturbing concept. I sure hope there’s no fish on the menu!

I do hope I get an invite and my very own place setting though. Day after day, I watch my human unload groceries, chop vegetables, prepare dinner… and then it disappears into the dining room, never to be seen again. All that food, and no leftovers for Buddy? Maybe if I sit at the table and stare at their plates, someone will drop a morsel into my bowl.

One can only hope.

There I go again, with my culinary obsession. Tiny brain, eyes-bigger-thanstomach. Typical fish. But seriously, a sincere thanks to all my loyal followers who constantly write in to my

human with fan mail, asking about my status and wishing me well. Your interest in the musings of a tiny finned creature are appreciated.

Nine months and still going strong!

Guess I should start working on my Christmas list… maybe a larger bowl, a small castle, some fun foliage to frolic in, a leafy hammock to sleep in… Is anyone writing this stuff down? Oh, and maybe a small finned friend to play with? As long as they’re not too fancy and colorful, that is… we can’t have any other creatures stealing too much of my Human’s attention.

‘Til next time, Happy Thanksgiving to all the humans out there. Save me some leftovers!

Suffolk County Community College’s Culinary Arts program students will prepare about 120 dinners for long-term patients and home-bound seniors of the Dominican Sisters of Hampton Bays in what has become an annual and happy undertaking for the culinary program and its students.

This marks the seventh year Suffolk County Community College has happily done the holiday cooking.

The dinner preparation will take place on Wednesday, November 25th, beginning at 9 a.m. at the Suffolk County Community College Culinary Arts & Hospitality

through the turmoil and treatment process of a devastating diagnosis.

A mother whose family has been assisted by Friends of Karen will be present to share her personal story when her daughter, Athena, was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia.

Toys for Tots Oyster Bay Town Councilman Anthony D. Macagnone joined with Town Councilman Chris J. Coschignano to announce the annual kick-off of this year’s “Toys for Tots” collection drive, which will run through December 15th, in an effort to collect new, unwrapped toys to be used as gifts for children throughout the community.

Under the direction of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve, the Toys for Tots Drive follows a mission to help ensure that children in need within our area do not have to go the holiday season without something to bring them happiness.

BLUE RIBBON RUN - The Greater Long Island Runner Club’s (GLIRC) 6th Annual Blue Ribbon Run for Prostate Cancer was recently held at Syosset-Woodbury Community Park. The GLIRC is Long Island’s largest and most active running club.

Now in its 6th year, the event saw all types of athletes attend from cancer survivors to family members, physicians and friends. All proceeds from the Blue Ribbon Run for Prostate Cancer will benefit support programs and aid in detecting prostate cancer early.

Winter Conference Set The New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA), is proud to announce that Three Hundred Twenty-Nine (329) students from school music programs across Long Island have been selected to perform among the more than nine hundred (900) students in eight (8) NYSSMA All State Ensembles. This constitutes more than onethird of the total number of students selected for All State.

Approximately nine hundred (900) students from high schools across New York State will perform in eight ensembles, and professional development related to music education will be offered to approximately 1,200 attendees. Several school ensembles will be featured, and Glenn Nierman, President of the National Association for Music Education (NAfME) will deliver the keynote address.

artist will be Triton Brass.

Members of this exciting Internationally-renown musical quintet has been artists-in-residence at both the Tanglewood Institute and The Boston Conservatory, where each has served as on the faculty.

“As NYSSMA celebrates its eightieth All State Conference, we are proud to partner with the city of Rochester for the eighteenth year in a row,” said Dr. David Gaines, NYSSMA President. “Music educators from all over the State will attend for professional development opportunities, seminars, performances, and valuable lesson materials for use in their classes and rehearsals.

VOLUNTEER RECOGNITION - Diane O’Neill, Executive Director, Long Island Volunteer Center, an affiliate of Hands on Network, presented Mackenzie Johnston with the Beacon of Hope Superstorm Sandy Volunteer Recognition award recently.

Mackenzie, a member of Neighbors Supporting Neighbors, worked nonstop for two weeks after Super Storm Sandy, lugging supplies, coloring with children, serving soup and sandwiches and more. She continues working to organize school supply and Christmas present drives.

Syosset High School held its National Commitment Day for athletes on November 10th. Fifteen of Syosset’s most distinguished student athletes signed a Letter of Intent to play their respective sports at the collegiate level.

Student donned caps or attire from their school of choice as they signed their respective Letter of Intent in front of family, coaches and special guests.

Syosset Coordinator of Health, Physical Education and Athletics Drew Cronin hosted the event in conjunction with boys varsity lacrosse coach John Calabria.

“There is really nothing like playing sports at the collegiate level and that has been the goal of everyone here who is about to sign a National

Getting Ready Fourth-graders at Robbins Lane Elementary School in Syosset recently participated in an emergency education program about personal and family preparedness, local hazards and basic coping skills.

Provided by the American Red Cross, the “Pillowcase Project”

led students through a “learn, practice, share” framework to engage them in disaster preparedness to be ready in case of a fire, hurricane or other major disturbance that could result in catastrophe.

Every participating student received a sturdy pillowcase upon completion of the program, which they

personalized and brought home to build their own emergency supply kit.

Items that they were instructed to fill these pillowcases with included batteries, a flashlight, a change of clothing, a blanket, soap, a toothbrush and toothpaste and even a portable and preferably waterproof radio.

Scaring Away Hunger

Dutch Lane Elementary School students, staff and PTA members collaborated to collect non-perishable food items and take a stand against starvation in the second annual Scare Away Hunger campaign.

Scare Away Hunger, for which the entire Dutch Lane community teams up to create and display scarecrows outside the

school, runs through the holiday season. This year’s theme for the scarecrows — superheroes — also coincides with the theme of the Parents as Reading Partners program that the school is participating in. Students, parents and staff members stuffed various scarecrows with newspapers, dressed them as popular superheroes and

topped them with plastic pumpkin heads.

The Scare Away Hunger initiative, which culminated with a scarecrow planting ceremony, served to promote the school’s commitment to charitable efforts.

The Town of Oyster Bay 2015-2016 Distinguished Artists Concert series continues in December with a number of performances at various libraries throughout the Town.

One of the Town’s most popular programs, the ‘Distinguished Artist’ Concert Series runs now through May 2016 and features performances by a diverse collection of musical acts and dance programs. music and representation of the 1960’s era with “Just Sixties: The Stories…The Songs!” at the Farmingdale Public Library, located at 116 Merritts Road, in Farmingdale.

On Saturday, December 19th, at 7:30 p.m., vocalist Jimmy Moore will play his “Holiday Show” featuring a delightful variety of classic holiday and popular winter songs at the Syosset Public Library, located at 225 South Oyster Bay Road, in Syosset.

Anchored by two runners finishing in the top ten, Suffolk County Community College won the 2015 NJCAA Division III Women’s Cross Country Championship last Saturday. The Sharks clinched their program’s second national title and first since 2007.

Freshman Ryleigh Donegan was the first Suffolk County studentathlete to cross the finish line, cracking the top five with a time of 19:26.7.

Coming in behind her teammate in sixth place was Sharks sophomore Leana Wiebelt, finishing with a time of 19:35.9.

the race in 20:06.3, contributing an 11th place finish to the Suffolk County effort. The Sharks other qualifying finishes came from freshman Menely Genao and sophomore Ashlee Rommeney. Genao’s 20:33.3 performance earned 19th place, while Rommeney took 37th with a time of 21:24.2.
