Dancing with Our Stars Gala attended the event which raised over $400,000 to support the Guidance Center’s mental health services for children and families. “The Guidance Center is proud of its commitment to provide essential mental health services to all children and families, regardless of their ability to pay,” said Executive Director Andrew Malekoff. “The

Of Fuzz & Refurbishing What better way to kick off the Thanksgiving holiday than with a column by yours truly, everyone’s favorite fish.

It’s been quite some time since my last contribution, and readers have been writing in to inquire as to my whereabouts, my wellbeing and the like.

Well, I’m still swimming; perhaps a little more frayed and frazzled of late, but such is life. I’m happy to report that my Human finally got on board with the whole concept of heating my suite, making for a nice cozy atmosphere to spend the chillier months. You know us tropical fish – anything under 78º and I’m looking for a sweater.

After a few days of fishy antibiotics, my little fuzz problem seems to have gone away. Speaking of, I seemed to be growing my own little fur coat of sorts over the last week or so, as my fins began sprouting tiny tufts of white fuzz. Apparently, this is not supposed to happen, and so my Human decided to overhaul my entire tank and redecorate with new gravel and a pretty little – emphasis on little – plant.

My favorite feature of all, though, would have to be the tiny “betta hammock” which now hangs from the side, essentially a leaf attached to a suction cup. I suppose this was designed to replace my former, much larger, luxurious plant which I used to use as a pillow of sorts. I must say, though, it’s quite

Celebrating Veterans In honor of Veterans Day, schools throughout the Hicksville Public School District participated in a variety of activities designed to teach students the importance of expressing their appreciation for the nation’s heroes and recognizing the sacrifices they have made.

At Fork Lane Elementary School, students received a visit from Valerie Pfundstein, author of “Veterans: Heroes in Our Neighborhood,” who read aloud the book, shared stories about veterans and discussed different ways students can thank

these heroes. In addition, Hicksville Superintendent of Schools Dr. Carl Bonuso, who is also a veteran, attended the event and shared some of his own personal experiences from when he served the country.

The Veterans Day activities at Woodland and Fork Lane are examples of the district’s celebration of and appreciation for the nation’s heroes.

Team Building

John F. Kennedy Middle School in the Bethpage Union Free School District held a special school spirit day that tied into the districtwide antibully week festivities.

Titled Soaring Eagles Day, the event served to build character, celebrate the school culture and emphasize the importance

of positivity and making positive choices.

As part of the day, sixth- and eighth-graders participated in the second annual Family Feud team-building challenge.

Former penpals, students rotated in teams of five to play the classic game, which featured characterbuilding questions and

survey results from actual students at the school.

The fun and interactive event, hosted by guidance counselor Mr. Suprenant, has become a highlight of the day for students.

The Next Generation Plainview-Old Bethpage Middle School recently organized a mock presidential debate for students in preparation of the upcoming Election Day. The event was intended to give middle school students the opportunity to participate in the Presidential campaign process and analyze the positions of both major presidential candidates, Donald J. Trump and Secretary Hillary Clinton.

During the debate, held in the school auditorium, students dressed in their respective political party’s colors and took turns standing behind the podium to argue their position on relevant issues.

The issues included immigration reform, education reform, adding jobs, improving healthcare, addressing bullying and voter registration to an audience of their peers and family members. Prior to the event, students

researched various issues related to the 2016 presidential campaign in their social studies classes so they were as informed and knowledgeable as possible.

In addition, all Plainview-Old Bethpage Middle School students registered to vote in their school-wide election, and filled out a mock ballot to vote on a presidential candidate.

The success of the program and the students’

achievements in science, technology, engineering and math fields (STEM) has encouraged the school to now include every student.

Recently, students in 6th grade used their Chromebooks to create a molecule simulation in their science class.

Students observed

firsthand how a molecule changes simply based on whether or not a proton is present. Also, because of the Google Chromebook’s translation software, English language learners were able to participate in the comprehensive lesson more seamlessly as well.

Calling All WWII Vets Of the over 16 million service men and women who served our country during World War II, the Department of Veterans Affairs estimates that only about 660,000 are still alive, with an average age of well over 90. In NY State, surviving World War II veterans number less than 100,000.

To honor these veterans, the first-ever Big Apple Honor Flight will take place on April 29th from JFK Airport to Washington DC. Founders of the upstate nonprofit, Hudson Valley Honor Flight, are bringing this program to the Big Apple for the first time ever and will take NYC’s Greatest Generation, veterans of World War II, on this

“Flight of a Lifetime.”

As a 501(c)3 organization, a percentage of the value of any placements of this PSA are tax deductible. If you can send us tearsheets of these placements, we can send recognition for tax purposes. In addition, any stories on veterans or volunteers resulting from these placements will be offered to you as an exclusive. A record $720,000 was raised during Huntington Hospital’s Centennial Gala on Friday, November 4th, at the Huntington Crescent Club.

The Centennial Gala honorees were Patricia J. Petersen, president and chief executive officer of Daniel Gale Sotheby’s International Realty, and Stanley C. Gale, chairman and chief executive officer of Gale International.

The record total raised at the gala will benefit the expansion of the hospital’s emergency and maternity departments as well as other capital improvements. The new

Huntington Hospital emergency department is expected to open on January 3rd, 2017 – which wouldn’t be possible without support from Ms. Petersen and Mr. Gale, and the gala’s major sponsors including: Daniel Gale Sotheby’s International Realty, Gale International, Arlindo & Evelyn Jorge Family Foundation, Huntington Hospital Medical Staff, the Jean and Kent Gale Family, Bethpage Federal Credit Union, The Claire Friedlander Family Foundation and Kean Development Company.

The national Honor Flight Network includes more than 130 hubs in 44 states across the country. Since its inception in 2005, over 159,703 veterans have been flown to D.C. on an Honor Flight. In 2015 alone, Honor Flight hubs serviced 20,886 veterans nationally. Not until now has an official Honor Flight been organized out of New York City, where the population of WWII veterans is estimated to be in the thousands.

“Of all the wars in our nation’s history, it is World War II that threatened the very existence of America as a culturally diverse

and free society,” added Maher. “According to the Veterans Administration, an estimated 430 WWII Veterans die each day nationally. We know the time is now to take our WWII veterans from the NYC area, before it is too late.”

Helping to Save Lives

Nassau BOCES Barry Tech held its first blood drive of the year earlier this fall, resulting in a significant contribution to the New York Blood Center.

Barry Tech’s Medical Assisting students registered more than 200 prospective donors and collected 174 units of lifesaving blood. Additional drives will be held in February and April of 2017.

“We are extremely proud of our students’ critical contribution to the blood drive,” said Barry Tech Principal Peter Dalton.

“While community service is a core value here at

Barry Tech, the work these students have put in is more than community outreach - it’s a demonstration of their dedication to their chosen field.”

“A Barry Tech education goes beyond the classroom experience,” said Medical Assisting Teacher Joan Lambert. “Students must apply what they have learned in the real world.

By enrolling in the Medical Assisting program, these young men and women made a commitment to help save lives. They have made good on that commitment through this event.”

Barry Tech’s Medical Assisting program prepares high school students for continuing education and careers in the ever-expanding field of healthcare. Students in this course of study prepare for the national exam and work toward establishing themselves as certified medical assistants. Athletic Address

This fall, Nassau BOCES spoke to educators throughout the state about the relationship between education and athletics, at the New York State School Boards Association’s (NYSSBA) 97th annual Convention and Education Expo, held in Buffalo, NY. The presentation was part of a special session on emerging educational trends intended to inform the decision-making

process among school boards.

Nassau BOCES Board Member Robert “B.A.” Schoen, who also serves as a wrestling official and as Area 11 Director for NYSSBA, joined Nina Van Erk, Nassau BOCES Executive Director of Interscholastic Athletics, in presenting “Sports and Boards: On and Off the Fields.” Among their distinguished fellow

presenters was Keynote Speaker David Pogue, host of NOVA ScienceNOW and CBS News Sunday Morning correspondent, as well as featured speakers Miranda Beard, President of the National School Boards Association, and Prof. Christopher Emdin, Director of Columbia University’s Center for Health Equity and Urban Science Education.

Volunteer of the Year

The Nassau County Veteran Service Agency is an advocate for veterans, their spouses and dependents.

They assist veterans with pensions, compensation, education and training, vocational rehabilitation, benefits for survivors, burial and hospital care.

The agency provides free transportation for veterans to either the VA Hospital in Northport or the VA Health Clinic in East Meadow.

This program is staffed by volunteers who assist the veterans in getting the health care they require.

Dinner was held at the American Legion Post 1066 in Massapequa. This year’s recipient of the Volunteer of the Year Award was Michael Kass.

Legislator James D. Kennedy had privilege of attending this ceremony and presenting an award to Mr. Kass.

Health Fair Held

NUMC Recognition

Nassau University Medical Center was recognized by the Police Surgeons’ Association of NY at a dinner at which several awards were presented to the hospital in recognition of its superior care provided to patients being transported to its trauma service.

NUMC received a plaque for the emergency department as well as for the trauma service.

Staff from the emergency department and from the trauma service were on hand to accept the plaque. A special plaque was also presented to trauma surgeon Dr. Kelley

Sookraj for the excellent care provided to Inspector Robert Psoinas, a trauma patient at NUMC for two months following an auto accident.

Inspector Psoinas was on hand to personally present the plaque to Dr. Sookraj and express his gratitude for saving his life.

Earlier this fall, the Nassau BOCES Adult Learning Center (ALC) held its first Health Fair.

Students and staff at the center were encouraged to take advantage of free services provided by 12 different healthcare vendors on site for the event.

Among the organizations contributing to the fair were Nassau University Medical Center (NUMC), North Shore LIJ, The LGBT Network, Child Care Council of Nassau, Dr. Ron Mark of Mark Medical Care, United Healthcare, Shaklee Weight and Nutrition Products, and World Gym. In addition to a profusion of helpful, healthful information, fairgoers had access to a variety of services including

dental, vision and podiatry screenings.

The focal point of the fair was the NUMC NuHealth Mobile Breast Imaging Center, offering free mammographies and breast exams, as well a host of information on cancer prevention and awareness. A total of nine mammograms were conducted throughout the day.

The driving force behind the Health Fair is Betty Rodriguez, a student at the ALC and a breast cancer survivor. Ms. Rodriguez is passionate about informing the community of the importance of good health and spreading awareness about the healthcare options that are available.

“I’m very excited and grateful for the opportunity

to bring this event to the Adult Learning Center,” Ms. Rodriguez said of the fair. “Nassau BOCES is an amazing organization that has opened doors for many people. I have gotten so much support from everyone here; it is my home.” She also thanked the Parent Leadership Institute for “giving me the courage to keep going and never stop.”

“The Health Fair is a wonderful idea that is helpful to both the school and the community,” said ALC student Maria Argueta. “It is especially helpful that some of the materials are in Spanish.

It’s good information and it’s important that everyone gets it. I hope the fair returns next year.

Hotline Training Completed Nine women from throughout Nassau, Suffolk and Queens are new volunteers with the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program, having completed a 12-hour training session.

As volunteers, the women will answer the hotline (800.877.8077), taking calls from people concerned about breast cancer throughout New York State, and represent the hotline at health fairs and other educational programs.

Most of the new volunteers are breast cancer survivors, such as Yolanda Peters from

St. Albans.

“Breast cancer is no longer my grandmother’s disease. We younger women should know that breast cancer doesn’t stop us, it’s just another obstacle we need to cross. I wanted to be able to learn and educate more women in my community.

And working with breast cancer hotline I can do so.”

Christina Demosthenous of Westbury was 32 when she was diagnosed 11 years ago. She says, “Young women face unique issues with breast cancer and I hope I can be especially helpful to those women.”

Grace Verderame of Central Islip, who called the hotline for help when

she was diagnosed with breast, says, “I want to be a volunteer because I want to give back, not only to the cancer community but to Adelphi who was there for me when I needed them.” She called the hotline several times. “The volunteers I spoke with helped calm my worst fears.” Debra Langendorff of East Rockaway said she wished she had known about the Adelphi program when first diagnosed in 2006 and wants help for others going through breast cancer.

New Scholarship Announced

Sahn Ward Coschignano, PLLC has announced the creation of the Chris J. Coschignano/Sahn Ward Coschignano, PLLC Scholarship, which will be awarded to a secondyear law student at Touro Law Center interested in practicing in the area of land use or real estate law. The amount of the scholarship is $5,000 annually.

Mr. Coschignano, a 1990 graduate of Touro Law Center, concentrates his practice in the areas of zoning and land use planning, real estate law and transactions. He has handled some of the most complex zoning and land use planning projects on Long Island which have been recognized by numerous organizations for their smart growth and proper planning objectives.

In addition, he is a fourterm Councilman for the Town of Oyster Bay. Prior to being elected Town in both high schools and Councilman in 2001, he increased clinic capacity, served as Counsel to the Mental Health First Aid Town’s Zoning Board of Training to promote early Appeals. identification through a network of trained community members, and workshops for residents, school faculty, and community professionals that will address children’s mental health issues.
