Building a Movement Long Island organizations gathered at the first Progressive Vision for Long Island: Organizing for Success conference.

This conference was organized by a new groundbreaking initiative called Long Island Progressive Network that brings together immigration, social justice, LGBTQ rights, environmental

issues, labor rights, education, sustainable development and community organizations to work together to build power and to move progressive issues throughout Long Island, the state and the nation.

The Conference is a historic event because it is the first time Long Island organizations explored what can happen

if we bring together people from many different issue areas that all have an interest in creating positive change on Long Island.

Concept to Creation By: Jamie Lynn Ryan It’s 5 o’clock on Friday the 13th, deadline day, “odd day” (11/13/15), whatever you want to call it… And here I am contemplating my column, the final piece of the puzzle that is the week’s work here at South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers.

By the time you read this, our holiday issue of Seasons™ Magazine will be on the streets, featuring the best of Long Island happenings, some highlights from New York City, and an array of helpful hints to make the shopping and decorating rush go as smoothly as possible. We have even mixed in a few recipes for you to sample at your next holiday gathering.

Senior citizens throughout the community were honored with an afternoon of food, fun and entertainment at the Hicksville Public School District’s 24th annual Senior Citizen Luncheon.

The special guests were served hors d’oeuvres and meals by student volunteers in one of the

school’s gymnasiums, which was set up to resemble a ballroom and featured students’ artwork.

Following Superintendent of Schools Dr. Carl Bonuso’s warm welcome to the senior citizens, the high school’s marching band, string ensemble, chamber singers and cast members from the theatre department’s fall

production showcased their skills.

The luncheon offered students an opportunity to showcase their remarkable talents for the senior citizens and create bonds with elder members of their community.

Math Muscle Hicksville Middle School eighth-graders Dhanush Sivasankaran and Razeen Hossain, and sixthgraders Anika Bokka and Aryan Jain, were named Long Island Mathematics Scholars by the Institute of Creative Problem Solving for Gifted and Talented Students at SUNY College of Old Westbury.

The four standout students distinguished themselves from a pool of

84 program invitees, and competed against nearly 600 top-ranking students from Long Island school districts. To be selected, the student must be in the top 1/10 of one percent in math of all students on Long Island in his or her grade; acceptance is based on the following criteria: nomination, school transcript, teacher recommendation, student’s written statement, and a

rigorous entrance exam.

To earn the Math Scholar title, the students completed 60 hours of instruction over the course of more than 20 Saturday mornings. The curriculum covered topics including algebra, geometry, discrete math and number theory.

Parent workshops were also offered to help parents foster students’ interests in math, science and technology.

Five eighth-graders at Hicksville Middle School were recognized by the John Hopkins Center for Talented Youth for earning high honors on their SAT-I

scores.

Students Razeen Hossain, Sejal Gupta, Viveka Jain, Dhanush Sivasankaran and Murtaza Shah all earned at least

550 on one or more components of the exam, which they took in the 2014-2015 school year.

As youngsters marched along the campus grounds and through the hallways, proudly displaying their Halloween costumes, they

carried signs containing adjectives that described their character. Students researched many different words and chose one word to use that best describes their costume for the parade.

For example, witches were wicked, superheroes were brave and villains were dangerous. Teachers

also donned superhero costumes and capes, playing the part of “super teachers” as they led the children past the supportive parents who were on hand.

Fourth-graders at Baylis Elementary School in the Syosset Central School District are tapping into their observation skills during their “Plant Growth and Development” unit of study.

After careful organization and preparation, students planted Wisconsin Fast Plants in learning stations.

The seeds were developed through selective breeding to move through the life cycle of a plant in just six weeks. For

optimal growth, students used effective planting techniques involving careful placement of the seeds, as well as adding just the right amount of soil and fertilizer pellets. They used forceps to ensure the seeds were properly placed in the soil and droppers to provide the precise amount of water.

According to teacher Josephine Amodeo, the fourth-graders enjoyed working together and helping one another

through each station.

Throughout this study, students use their inquiry and process skills to collect data on the growth of their plants. They are currently making daily observations, recording them through drawings and descriptions, sharing their findings and posing any questions they may have.

Kathryn (Kate) Clyne, a fifth-grade student at Central Boulevard Elementary School in the Bethpage Union Free School District, began a fundraising organization last year.

Called Piece by Piece, she is working for it to become an official 501(c)(3) nonprofit to benefit autism research. Inspired by her brother Michael, who is on the autism spectrum, Kate has been raising funds for Autism Speaks for the last few years.

Most recently, Kate formed a team that raised more than $8,000 for an autism walk on October 4th. As a result of her efforts, she received a proclamation from Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano.

Warm Clothing Drive The Long Island Health Collaborative (LIHC) is hosting a warm clothing drive at their Hauppauge office for Long Islanders in need. They are accepting donations of new and gently used warm clothing from generous donors in the area. Coats, sweaters,

pants, gloves or any other clothing that can protect from the harsh winter season are appreciated.

Clothing brought to the LIHC collection bin from November 9th through November 25th at 1383 Veterans Memorial Highway, Suite 26, will

be gifted to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul Long Island. Clothing can be dropped off between the hours of 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

The Society uses donations like these to help the 200,000 Long Islanders that St. Vincent de Paul

serves annually. These materials are either given away to people in need or sold at an affordable price at St. Vincent de Paul thrift stores.

The LIHC is a coalition of health and human service providers and organizations, working

together to improve the health of Long Islanders.

St. Vincent de Paul is a member of the LIHC, along with all of the hospitals on Long Island, the two county health departments, dozens of community-based organizations, colleges,

Madeline Kuhlke, a dance major at the Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA) from the Bethpage UFSD, was recently named a Merit Award Winner by the Long Island Arts Alliance and Newsday. She earned the award for excellence as a practicing artist and for superior academic achievement.

school for “most of my life,” longing to follow in the footsteps of her older sister, a LIHSA dance alum. Now that her dream has come true, she finds it’s everything she hoped for and more.

“My time here at LIHSA has been amazing,” Madeline says. “To be able to attend school at a place where I get to do what I love every day among such a talented group of people is absolutely incredible.” In addition to making “friends that will last a lifetime,” she says one of the greatest highlights of her LIHSA career has been the opportunity to perform in the American Theater Dance Workshop’s holiday musical Cracked.

Madeline cannot say enough about her alma mater, especially when it comes to her teachers, who, she says, “inspire me each day. Learning under professionals who are

performing in the field is truly something special.

They do so much, not only for their students, but for the entire school.

Our teachers truly care about us and create a personal connection with each and every student.

LIHSA transforms aspiring young artists into mature professionals who are ready to work in their fields of choice.”

The Great White Way calls to Madeline and the Big Apple figures prominently into her future plans. She is determined to attend college in New York City, where she intends to earn a bachelor of fine arts degree in dance with a minor in nutrition.

While she hopes to eventually join a modern dance company in NYC, teaching is also on the horizon. “I would like to educate young dancers and share what I’ve learned,” she says.

As for earning the LIAA Award of Merit, Madeline considers it “a real honor.

It feels great to be so publicly acknowledged for the hard work I’ve put into both my academics and dancing.”

But, she is quick to add, “I wouldn’t have been able to accomplish such a remarkable goal without the guidance and support I’ve received from LIHSA.” “All of us at LIHSA are extremely proud of Madeline and her impressive achievement,” said Interim Principal Jack Lenson. “We work hard to help young artists achieve their full potential, both in the classroom and in their chosen disciplines. Awards like this demonstrate how LIHSA helps students to unlock their gifts and successfully realize their talents.”

A Matter of Time

By: Frank Fernandez Long ago, I saw a structure, unusual in its shape and size.

Imposing. Hulking, I needed a closer look.

Then I noticed it.

Inconspicuous.

No one had even noticed a small crack had formed.

I knew that it was only a matter of Time until it would burst.

Full of pride, I thought I could hold it back. Little did I know, the fear.

Many have tried, but none have succeeded, holding back the dam of Time.

The crack slowly spread, and I knew not what to do.

But the crack still grew.

Larger and larger, Hopeless in all proposals, I turned tail and ran.

Hell hath no fury stronger than the man who runs.

Runs away from Time.

Callously spreading, Stuck in its dateless decay.

Everything consumed.

There was no more choice.

In the end, I surrendered, surrendered to Time.

When will all men learn, never to stand in the way of the wrath of Time!

The Bristal Assisted Living communities sponsored the play “A Piece of My Heart,” performed professionally at the Museum of American Armor at Old Bethpage Village Restoration. The play presented a powerful, true drama of five nurses who staffed field hospitals during the Vietnam War. Named “The most enduring play on Vietnam in the nation,” by The Vietnam Vets Association, “A Piece of My Heart” focuses on the role of women during the war, and seeks to pay tribute to the nearly 11,000 women in uniform who served incountry during that time.

80 year-old Ann Berg, a resident of The Bristal at East Northport, and a former Bellmore resident said, “The

acting was amazing, and the experiences of these young women were heart wrenching and unforgettable.”

Jan Burman, President of The Engel Burman Group, developers and operators of The Bristal Assisted Living communities, said “For many who served in Vietnam, the experience is as much an emotional presence for them today as it was fifty years ago.

We believe we have a responsibility to present this play as it reminds all of us of the enormous burdens our veterans continue to bear in the defense of our nation.”

Steven Krieger, a Partner at The Engel Burman Group added, “These women completed their tours of duty under enormously difficult

circumstances and with little recognition. Some gave their lives while others left Vietnam with many emotional and physical scars they still bear today. A half century later, this play seeks to explore their experiences and pay tribute to all those women who served.”

There are nine communities of The Bristal Assisted Living on Long Island. Each offers activities for residents based on their personal preferences, hobbies and interests. Programs include arts and crafts, book clubs, shopping trips, and regularly scheduled cultural outings. Finding Careers As a high school student, Craig Vella was given the opportunity to begin working in a field that he loved – technology. When he realized he could turn his passion into a career, he never looked back. Vella is one of more than a dozen technology experts currently employed by Nassau BOCES who were once students at Barry Tech, the agency’s career and technical education high school in Westbury.

Every year, Barry Tech’s Computer Technology Program places pupils in student worker positions with industry partners, including Nassau BOCES’ Technology Services Program.

“Barry Tech was a great experience,” Vella, of Hicksville, said of his alma mater.

“They take students from different levels and bring us all up to speed, to a point where we can make a positive entry into the workplace.”

During their first year at Barry Tech, students are engaged in handson learning. By their second year, they are ready to put their skills to the test.

For two days each week, students trade the classroom for a work site. “I was able to continue learning and gain experience as I worked closely with other techs,” Vella said of his internship. “It was a little scary at first,” he admitted, but added that eventually, “I was able to get an introduction into the workplace and start to develop the social skills that I would use every day later on in my career.”

Vella – who joined the technology team full time in 2003, right after his high school graduation – is now one

of the Technology Services Program managers. He and his fellow Barry Tech alums are part of an elite team of professionals charged with maintaining the technology infrastructure of Nassau County school districts. Nassau BOCES provides more than 150 technicians in schools throughout Nassau County.

The head of the Technology Services Program, Sandeep Dhillon, was also once a student intern. “Barry Tech helped me to become prepared for what I wanted to do,” said Dhillon, who graduated with Vella. “They helped

me to get a foot in the door of my current career. They trained me and taught me what my field was all about.”

Brian Roasado, of Uniondale, a Barry Tech graduate from the class of 2009, is fulfilling a lifelong dream, working for Nassau BOCES as a field technician. He got his first computer as a child and has been fascinated by technology ever since. “Barry Tech gave me the opportunity to learn something I actually wanted to do for a living,” he said. “Every day is something different.

You never know what tomorrow will bring. Even when there’s a problem, I discover that I’ve already learned how to fix it. I wouldn’t want to do anything else.”

Joseph Lomonaca, a Barry Tech alum from the class of 2003, is currently working as a Nassau BOCES technician at the Long Beach CSD. He says it was the real-world work experience at Barry Tech that launched him into his career. “Barry Tech helped me to see what the field was like and to make sure that it was what I wanted. I got to do a lot of hands-on stuff that you don’t get to do in even the best classroom.”

Long Beach CSD was one of the districts hardest hit by Superstorm Sandy.

Lomonaca was one of the first responders, working tirelessly to rebuild the district’s technology infrastructure. He calls this experience one of the most daunting and rewarding challenges of his career. “We helped to get them back up and running, and now they’re moving forward,” he says.

“The mission of our career and technical education program at Barry Tech is to give students as extensive experiences as interns in industry as we can, within the limits of the school day and the busy life of a high school senior,” said Gene Silverman, Executive Director of Regional School and Instructional Programs. “Nassau BOCES Technology Services provides an excellent opportunity for our students to work in the real world of IT and computer technology, oftentimes in the very schools they come from.”
