or more than 10 years, the students of Village Elementary School in Syosset have been donating their leftover, unopened Halloween candy to numerous charitable organizations to benefit children who are less fortunate.

Village students and their parents brought in more than five large barrels of candy on November 1st as part of the school’s annual Operation Sweet Tooth endeavor. Thanks to all the children for their generosity.

Now that the election has come and gone, and we’ve all spent the better part of the last year weighing in with our thoughts and opinions on matters political, societal and purely personal, perhaps now is the time to take a step back and reset.

Votes have been cast, ballots counted, and the country has spoken.

Whether or not the outcome was to your particular liking, at this point, is, quite frankly, beside the point.

The beauty of this country is that we do welcome the discourse, the open discussion of all topics, both mainstream and taboo. That said, yet another benefit to living in this nation is the

fact that democracy has sustained for nearly 250 years, in spite of those very polarizing viewpoints which have consumed our nation over the course of time.

In that, there is a measure of victory, even in defeat.

The debates which have been waged over the social media channels these last several months have been intense, to say the least.

Families have been divided, friendships pushed to their limits, neighborhoods torn apart by protests, rallies and the like. Months of hatred and rage have been built up to the point of no return, in some cases.

This is truly a shame. At no point should honest, open discussion be a negative to be avoided at all costs.

Never should disagreement dissolve into petty namecalling and insults, nor should anyone be written off for a mere difference of opinion. Uninformed ignorance? Perhaps. But not an educated analysis of the facts.

And with that, we head into the next phase, the great unknown. Better that we should do this with the compassion and understanding that has made this country what it is, with a measure of respect for others, and with a sense of unity toward a common cause – the betterment of life for all those who reside here, as well as future generations to come.

That, I believe, is a point we can all agree upon.

Artistic Appreciation The Hicksville community’s senior citizens were honored with an afternoon filled with food, fun and entertainment on November 3rd at the Hicksville Public School District’s 25th annual Fall

Senior Citizen Luncheon.

Hicksville High School student volunteers served hors d’oeuvres and meals to the special guests, who were also treated to special performances by the school’s marching band, string ensemble, chamber

singers and theater department.

The event served as a beautiful and harmonious way for students to create bonds with the elder members of the community.

Operation Sweet Tooth For more than 10 years, the students of Village Elementary School in Syosset have been donating their leftover, unopened Halloween candy to numerous charitable organizations to benefit children who are less fortunate.

Village students and their parents brought in more than five large barrels of candy on Nov. 1 as part of the school’s annual Operation Sweet Tooth

endeavor. Children at Ronald McDonald House, Mercy First and AHRC will receive candy donated by Village students. Candy is also given to Angela’s House for distribution to soldiers stationed overseas. As part of the event, students participate in mathematical sorting, counting, grouping and graphing activities and estimate the amounts of candy collected. This year, for the first time,

the entire school worked together, with students in lower grades working with buddies from the upper grades in the Village gymnasium.

According to Principal Jeffrey Kasper, the gym was filled with excited children and hundreds of pounds of candy. Special thanks to teacher Wendy Tepper for organizing the activity and parent volunteers who delivered the candy to these organizations.

Entrepreneurial Competition Plainview-Old Bethpage School District’s John F. Kennedy High School student members of the Business Honor Society and DECA team recently hosted the school’s Sixth Annual POB Challenge.

The reoccurring event was created to prepare high school business students for future careers in marketing, finance, hospitality and management by creating real world environments to

apply their communication and critical thinking skills.

Throughout the day, more than 100 DECA and Business Honor Society students from across Long Island worked in teams to apply their business skills in order to advance to the next round of the challenge. Out of the 35 teams that competed in developing their own unique rooftop restaurant, seven teams advanced to the final round. Finalists

competed against each other by presenting a two minute elevator pitch on stage in front of a panel of judges and an audience of their peers.

Food Drive Set Westy Self Storage, together with the East Northport Chamber of Commerce announces its support of St. Vincent dePaul Food Pantry located at Saint Anthony of Padua Parish Outreach by hosting a non-perishable food drive. The drive will run through December 15th. Westy Self Storage in East Northport will serve as a designated drop off location for donations.

The Saint Anthony of Padua Parish Outreach consists of a dedicated group of parishioners who respond to the needs of others compassionately and professionally. They together bring people who are in need of assistance

with people who are trained to help them. Parish Outreach empowers those in need to help themselves.

Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts’ (LIHSA) own Dina Denis was lauded recently for her collaborative work with renowned choreographer Anabella Lenzu. Ms. Denis, who is the Director of the LIHSA Dance Department and a dance instructor at the school, won praise from critics for her performance in Lenzu’s retrospective, presented at the Argentinean Consulate.

New York Arts reviewer Mari S. Gold was deeply affected by Ms. Denis’ paired performance with fellow dancer Lauren Ohmer. “As they stretched with imploring arms and beat the floor with their feet in frustration, it was impossible not to be moved,” Gold wrote.

The Dance Enthusiast’s Jenny Thompson declared that Ms. Denis’ performance of Lenzu’s “Ilusiones de Percantas

(Women’s Dreams)” was a showstopper. “It marks dancer Dina Denis’ standout moment,” wrote Thompson, “as she embodies the brash and sultry persona of her character.”

Ms. Denis is a professional dynamo who is well known among the New York City dance community. She is Founder and Artistic Director of Dance Into Light (DIL), a troupe of artists from various disciplines in addition to dance, including visual artists, videographers, musicians and composers.

The troupe - which has performed nationally and locally - has earned the endorsement of the Queens Council on the Arts, the New York State Council on the Arts and the Department of Cultural Affairs, among others.

Ms. Denis’ list of professional accomplishments is

a lengthy one. She has performed or choreographed for several renowned artistic ventures including Queensboro Dance Festival, Long Island Dance Consortium, Salvator LaRussa Dance Theatre, Roy Arias Theatre and Brooklyn Arts Exchange.

She has collaborated with numerous luminaries in her field, including Fulbright Scholar and visual artist Siona Benjamin, and classical Indian dancer and choreographer Ishrat (Rakhi) Hoque.

Ms. Denis is an accomplished educator.

Before coming to LIHSA, she taught for several years in the New York City school system. At the East Bronx Academy for the Future, she developed the “Literacy through Creative Dance” program. She has also served the New York City Department of Education’s Offices of Arts and Special Projects as facilitator and adjudicator of the “Dance Arts Achieve Assessment,” a federally funded program that is as a national model of standardized arts assessments in public schools.

Ms. Denis holds a bachelor’s degree in dance from Hofstra University, a master’s degree in dance education from New York University, and New York State certification as a dance educator for grades K-12.

Create and practice your 2-minute drill.

Select an outside meeting spot at a safe distance

where family members can meet. Discuss the plan with everyone in the household and practice it until everyone can escape in less than two minutes.

Conduct practice drills at least twice a year.

2. Install and maintain smoke alarms. Working smoke alarms halve your risk of dying in a home fire.

Put them on every level of your home, including inside and outside bedrooms. Test the alarms monthly and change the batteries when needed.

Never disable a smoke alarm. Teach children what an alarm sounds like and what to do if they hear one.

If your home is among them, you may care to heed these seven hints to keep your pet healthy from the experts at the American Veterinary Medical Association: 1. Maintain your pet at a healthy weight; 2. Exercise your pet; 3. Feed a balanced, nutritious diet; 4. Visit the veterinarian at least once a year to make sure your pet is healthy and to help detect problems earlier; 5. Vaccinate your pet against potentially deadly diseases such as distemper, parvo, panleukopenia and rabies; 6. Spay/neuter your dog or cat;

Healthy Habits That Can Have a Lasting Impact A long and healthy life is the ultimate goal for many people.

While a host of factors beyond a person’s control, such as genetics, impact how long that person lives and how susceptible to certain medical conditions he or she may be, there are many things men and women can do to improve their chances of living long, healthy lives:

Stay on your toes. A healthy diet is a key component of a healthy lifestyle, but diet alone is not enough to promote a long and healthy life. According to the Johns Hopkins Medicine Health Library, the risks associated with a physically inactive lifestyle are considerable. Such risks include a greater risk of developing high blood pressure and coronary heart disease and even a greater risk for certain cancers. In addition, physical inactivity can add to feelings of anxiety and depression.

Inactivity tends to increase with age, so men and women aiming for

long and healthy lives should make physical activity a vital part of their daily lives.

Get your whole grains. Whole grains may be another key ingredient to a long and healthy life.

Numerous studies have shown that increasing whole grain consumption can help prevent the onset of type 2 diabetes. Researchers who conducted a systematic review of studies examining the link between whole grains and type 2 diabetes prevention in 2007 found that eating an extra two servings of whole grains per day decreased a person’s risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 21 percent. That’s an important finding, as additional research has found that people with diabetes have an increased risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease, a neurodegenerative

condition that can dramatically reduce quality of life.

Visit your physician annually, if not more frequently. While many people, especially those who feel healthy, are hesitant to visit their physicians, doing so may just save your life. Several diseases,

including cancer and heart disease, are more effectively treated when detected early. Annual physicals and discussions with your physician may uncover a disease in its early stages when it is most treatable.

Waiting until symptoms appear may not be too late to treat a condition or disease, but taking a proactive approach increases the likelihood of early detection, which increases your chances of living a long and healthy life.

Healthy habits improve peoples’ quality of life while also increasing the likelihood that men and women live long, healthy and productive lives.

Be Smart About Antibiotic Use When used correctly, antibiotics and similar drugs known as antimicrobial agents can alleviate infections caused by various bacteria and some types of fungi and parasites. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that these drugs have been used successfully for the last 70 years to treat patients with infectious diseases.

But antibiotics cannot treat illnesses stemming from viruses, which include most colds and the flu.

As effective as antibiotics can be, antibiotic resistance is a growing problem. The CDC reports that at least two million people become infected with bacteria that have become resistant to antibiotics, and roughly 23,000 people die each year as a result of these types of infections. An April 2014 report

from the World Health Organization stated, “This serious threat is no longer a prediction for the future, it is happening right now in every region of the world and has the potential to affect anyone, of any age, in any country. It is now a major threat to public health.”

strep throat, urinary tract infections or ear infections.

Take a wait-and-see approach. Wait for lab results to come back for strep throat or other cultures to see if you need an antibiotic. Many viralbased illnesses will go away within two weeks’ time.

Adhere to dosage guidelines.

When prescribed antibiotics for an infection, take them as directed, making sure you complete the dosage cycle. Do not stop simply because you feel better. Stopping early may not be enough to effectively kill the bacteria and may contribute to resistance in the future.

Antibiotic abuse and resistance are concerns that can be addressed by becoming informed and making smart medication choices.

While many working men and women dream of the day when they can leave the daily grind behind once and for all, they might want to think more about a second career than a long, carefree retirement. A study from British researchers published in the International Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry found that each extra year that men and women work was associated with a six-week delay in the onset of dementia.

While men and women may want to retire from their professions, finding second careers or volunteering close to full-time hours may improve their long-term health and quality of life.
