We respect you, we thank you and we honor you today and always.

Connecting Military Parents And Children, One Story At A Time (StatePoint) For deployed service members who are also parents, being away from their kids is often the hardest part of the job.

This is why the United Service Organizations (USO) has prioritized connecting military parents with their families.

One way to bring service members a reminder of home is through USO entertainment tours, the most famous tour veteran, of course, being legendary comedian Bob Hope.

Hope’s legacy of service lives on today through the Bob Hope Legacy Reading Program.

Bringing story time ondemand around the globe, the program connected more than 39,000 military families around the world through reading in 2019 alone. Service members visit participating USO locations, record themselves reading their child’s favorite story and the USO ships that recording and book home to loved ones.

Likewise, military kids can record themselves reading a book and share the story time memories with their parents serving overseas.

Additionally, local USO reading events encourage kids to use their

creativity and complete a craft that complements a story’s theme.

When the COVID-19 pandemic hit and many locations had to temporarily shut their doors, this did not deter USO volunteers and staff from finding innovative ways to continue their efforts safely. USO Erbil in Iraq put their ingenuity to work and outfitted the back of a pickup truck with a makeshift trifold to serve as a reading “room.”

They then decorated the inside of the room and packed up a box of books, some props and a chair. The USO team drove the truck

all around base, stopping outside popular locations as well as remote areas to reach as many service members as possible with their new, unofficial “Bob Hope on the Road” reading room.

Since the first Bethpage Turkey Drive was organized in 2009, hundreds of community volunteers have come out to assist in the collection of more than 40,000 turkeys and over 168,000 pounds of food, which were then given to Long Island families facing hardship in time for the holidays.

Island Harvest Food Bank has seen an increase in the requests for food and support services among the 400 community-based agencies it serves. About 70,000 individuals receive food assistance from the Island Harvest Food Bank network each week.

The Bethpage Turkey Drive to benefit the Island Harvest Food Bank will take place on Friday, November 19, 2021, from 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM. The 13th annual food drive will include a no-contact donation car drive-through which will enable community residents to remain in their cars while volunteers remove donations from the vehicles.

Long Islanders are asked to donate frozen turkeys, non-perishable food items or cash donations.

These donations will go directly to Island Harvest Food Bank, which will help supply Thanksgiving meals to the more than 300,000 food-insecure Long Islanders through its distribution network of over 400 food pantries, soup kitchens, and other feeding programs on Long Island.

Non-perishable food items needed include canned goods, cereal, pasta, rice, boxed juices, and shelf-stable milk (please, no glass containers).

The Bethpage Turkey Drive will take place at Bethpage Federal Credit Union’s headquarters located at 899 South Oyster Bay Road in Bethpage.

Walsh Invites Families To Fall Dek Hockey Jamboree Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Vicki Walsh invites families to watch the Town of Oyster Bay Youth Deck Hockey League Fall Jamboree and register for the Spring Season on Saturday, November 13th from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Ellsworth Allen Park in Farmingdale. Dek hockey is a variation of traditional ice hockey, where the games are played sans skates on the ‘dek’ of an ice rink after the ice has melted away. After an exciting fall season, members of the Town of Oyster Bay Youth Dek Hockey League will face off for the championship at the Jamboree on November 13th.

“The Town’s Youth Dek Hockey League provides children aged 6-14 with the opportunity to improve their hockey skills alongside our expert coaching staff, learn

important life lessons like good sportsmanship, and make new friends,” said Councilwoman Walsh.

“Dek Hockey is a really fun variation of traditional ice hockey, and I am excited for the boys and girls of our Town who will compete in the Jamboree!”

While the Jamboree takes place, families can register their children for the Spring 2022 Youth Dek Hockey League. Open to Boys and Girls aged 6-14, the Spring program will feature 10 games and practices over a 10 week period, concluding with a playoff competition: the Jamboree. The Spring Season will begin in April 2022 at Allen and SyossetWoodbury Community Park. Registration will take place at the Allen Park Community Room (45 Motor Ave, Farmingdale) on Saturday, November 13th from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.

The program will cost $95 for residents, and $110 for non-residents. Each child will need to provide their own equipment, a list of which will be supplied upon registration.

Families must provide proof of residency and a copy of their child’s birth certificate at registration.

Only checks or money orders made payable to “Town of Oyster Bay” will be accepted. If a session is canceled due to inclement weather, make-up day(s) will be attempted. For more information, please call 516-433-7465 x8234.

The Charity of the Month for November is

Project 9 Line www.project9line.org

Project 9 Line is a non-profit organization that was formed in 2014 by Patrick Donohue Their focus is to bridge the communication gap between veterans and civilians. Through outreach, communication and purpose, they enable veterans to express themselves uniquely through forms of art.

Patrick Donohue is a veteran himself and has an inspiring story of his own. He served in the Army on active duty from 2008 to 2012.

He was deployed to Kandahar, Afghanistan from May of 2010 to April of 2011. Later, he reenlisted into the Army reserves, which he served in from 2014 to 2016.

After combat, Patrick got hit right away with some less-than-ideal feelings, such as anxiety and depression. “I was totally lost and alone and I had pushed away everybody I loved and fear ruled my life.

Anxiety and depression filled my day and I never thought that I would be able to be a regular person again,” said Donohue. “I avoided everything and everybody to best protect myself from the unknown. Finally when the pain became so great I had a moment of clarity and I asked for help. I checked into the VA hospital in Northport and began the process of what ultimately turned my life around.”

Slowly but surely, things started to turn around for him. While he was in the VA hospital, he was exposed to some art and wellness programs that completely transformed the way he viewed himself. “I started writing poetry, meditating, and doing yoga and these activities had a profound impact on me.” He was looking to see if any veteran organization offered those programs and services outside of the VA and he didn’t find any, so at that time he decided that he would build it himself.

Probably not even realizing how courageous and strong he really was, Patrick then wrote a business plan for what became this organization (Project 9 Line), so that he could bring art and wellness programs to other veterans on Long Island who might also be struggling. Little did he know that participating in those wellness programs and helping other veterans would become his calling and passion in life.

In late 2020, Donohue was sworn in as an attorney and started his own law firm focused on veterans law, specifically VA disability and discharge upgrades. To this day he still runs that firm, and he also is an

“Just a few years ago I had a tough time integrating and now I’m a productive and happy father, husband and attorney. I currently practice meditation, BJJ , yoga, play ice hockey, and I float in a float tank as often as I can. All of these practices are best for me as they bring me into the moment. I believe the best way to overcome trauma is to be in the moment as much as possible.

In the past I have participated in many of Project 9 Line’s programs, including stand up comedy, which also helped me immensely on my journey.”

Patrick still works on himself day to day, but knows that even if you face hard times, you can eventually get through them.

Nassau County Legislator Joshua Lafazan visited Syosset High School to congratulate the Nassau County Champions Girls Varsity Tennis Team.

Legislator Lafazan arrived at the high school’s recently refurbished tennis courts to present each member with a Nassau County Legislature Citation recognizing the

team’s accomplishments.

The Syosset varsity team, led by Head Coach Shai Fisher and cocaptains Alexa Brecher and Alex Ho, won their third County Championship in four years. Additionally, an outstanding nine players earned All-County honors with four players moving on to earn All-State honors.

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs notes that each year more than 75,000 volunteers spend more than 11 million hours in service to America’s veterans. Visiting veterans at the hospital to hear their stories can lift their spirits and aid in their recoveries.

In addition, veterans’ hospitals may have volunteer opportunities that make it easier for hospitals to operate at optimal capacity.

• Help a neighbor.

Unfortunately, many veterans return home with injuries that affect their ability to make it through a typical day without assistance.

Disabled veterans may be unable to do their own grocery shopping or maintain their homes. If a neighbor or

“Our residents recently received their 2021 Town calendar, which is filled with photos submitted throughout the year depicting people, places, community events and scenery throughout our Town,” said Councilwoman

Maier. “We accept photos for the calendar, as well as other Town publications, including our website and brochures.”

Millions of men and women serve in the military and make the sacrifices that such service requires.

Learning that their efforts and sacrifices are recognized and appreciated by the ordinary citizens they protect can make a world of difference to veterans as they recover from their injuries. Men, women and children who want to help veterans in need can do so in various ways.

• Visit a veterans hospital.

Contact a local veterans’ hospital to inquire about

nearby veteran is facing such hurdles, offer to do his or her shopping or mow his or her lawn. Such tasks won’t take much time but can make a world of difference to veterans.

• Offer professional services free of charge.

Professionals who want to help veterans can offer their services free of charge. Accountants can offer to prepare veterans’ tax returns for free, while attorneys can provide legal advice to veterans who need it. Contractors can help disabled veterans by offering to make alterations to their homes for free or at cost.

• Employ social media to help local veterans.

Many people who want to help local veterans might not be able to do so more than one day per week. But some veterans may require daily assistance. Men and women can start a locallybased Facebook group for fellow members of their community who want to pitch in to help local veterans. Such a group can make it easier to share information and arrange help for veterans in need.

Many veterans return home from serving overseas in need of help.

Offering such help can improve veterans’ lives while letting them know their efforts and sacrifices are appreciated.

This award is given to the Long Island public or private high school that best exemplifies sportsmanship and encourages growth of the game by ensuring that young players experience the fun of representing their school tennis teams and participate in community service events.

This honor comes after a championship season for both the Boys and

Girls teams. Syosset Girls went 10-1 last season as they secured their second Nassau County Championship in the last three seasons. Boys Tennis went 15-0 for the season and took home their third Long Island Championship in the last four seasons.

In addition, students Ansh Chadha, Alex Ho, Eesha Kaushik, Evan Lee and Nikhil Shah were named All County athletes.

Students Alexa Brecher, Brian Gao, Jeremy Levine and Rachel Lin were named All State.

Syosset Tennis Coach Shai Fisher, who was also

named Newsday’s Coach of the Year, accepted the award at the USTA’s Annual Awards Dinner in September. He credited the award to his students’ dedication to their sport, even through a pandemic.

“It is a testament to the hard work they have put in year-round, both on and off the courts,” said Fisher.

The USTA is the national governing body for the sport of tennis whose ongoing mission is to promote and develop the sport’s growth on every level in the United States.

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board today announced that the Town will honor veterans and active duty military personnel for their service to our nation with a free round of golf at the Hon. Joseph Colby Town of Oyster Bay Golf Course, located at 1 South Woods Road in Woodbury on Veterans Day, Thursday, November 11th.

“The brave men and

women of our United States Armed Forces put their lives on the line and sacrifice their time to protect our freedoms and democracy,” said Supervisor Saladino.

“This is an important way of saying ‘thank you’ and we’re pleased to be able to offer this free round of golf on Veterans Day as a small token of appreciation for all they’ve done and continue to do for our nation.”

As demonstrated by recent events in Afghanistan, Haiti and in the wake of Hurricane Ida, dedicated service members put their lives on the line whenever and wherever they are deployed at home or abroad.

Being activated for relief efforts in a time of desperate need or being stationed in remote locations far away from home can be difficult. Troops sometimes find themselves needing support services provided by the United Service Organizations (USO). To boost morale for American service members all around the globe, the USO is meeting them where they are.

“The heart of our mission is to ensure service members stay strong through connecting them to the things they love and fight for,” says Christopher Plamp, senior vice president of operations, programs, and entertainment at the USO. “When the pandemic prevented us from serving in person as we have done for over our 80-year history, we innovated new ways to virtually foster the spirit of connectedness.

As we look forward to a post-pandemic future, we are proud to continue

strengthening the military – no matter the time or place.”

Here are a few ways the USO brings vital morale and essential services directly to the nation’s military in far-reaching corners of the world: • For military units stationed in distant locations where there is no USO presence, USO2GO packages bridge the gap.

USO2GO kits ensure service members have some of the small comforts of home, such as electronic gaming, sports equipment, board games, movies and personal care items.

In 2020, USO2GO was heavily utilized to support quarantine sites for service members at military installations around the world.

• Service members can be called at a moment’s notice to leave their families and homes to respond to emergency situations – all amidst a global pandemic.

As troops work to save lives in moments of crisis, Mobile USO vehicles provide vital resources, support and comfort.

These units also help serve the National Guard in times of natural disasters such as hurricanes, wildfires, tornados and more. Equipped with food preparation areas, WiFi, TVs, relaxation areas, gaming stations and outdoor activities, these

USO centers on wheels are a welcoming haven for military members in hardto-reach areas.

• Virtual and in-person entertainment reconnects service members to experiences and memories of home. Since April 2020, USO Military Virtual Programming (MVP) entertainment programs have hosted 135 sessions with more than 170 entertainers. MVP events reached 49 countries, including 22 ships at sea and 52 U.S. states and territories.

Attendees engaged with celebrities via live Q&A sessions, performances, one-on-one calls and more than 140 live “look-ins” at military locations.

• The USO Care Package Program provides service members with two different types of care packages: Snack Packs and Toiletry Packs. These care packages give busy troops a needed boost. In November 2020, the 3 millionth care package since 9/11 was delivered to a service member stationed in East Africa.

State Parks Announces Hunting Schedules For 2021/2022 The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation announced that hunting will be permitted within specific areas of select Long Island State Parks for the upcoming hunting season.

Hunting regulations in state parks are developed in cooperation with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), which establishes hunting seasons throughout the state.

In addition to statewide hunting rules, special restrictions are in effect in state parks to protect visitors and to address wildlife management goals for each park. Hunters are advised to check with the state park regional office and with the local DEC wildlife management office for specific information.

All hunters must have a valid New York State hunting license and, to hunt waterfowl, must also be registered in the Harvest Information Program (https://www.dec.ny.gov/ permits/6405.html) and have a federal migratory bird hunting stamp (“duck stamp”).

Reports of rabies in deer have been rare, but hunters and other park users should be alert to the possibility of encountering a rabid raccoon, fox or skunk. To reduce the risk of exposure, follow these guidelines: • Do not approach wildlife

that acts abnormally.

• Do not touch any animal found dead for unknown reasons. Hunters are advised to wear gloves and eye protection to avoid coming in contact with tissues or bodily fluids that may carry infectious disease.

Spirit’s Promise Equine Rescue North Fork Country Barn Dance Spirit’s Promise Equine Rescue has announced they will host a North Fork Country Barn Dance with live music by Urban Rodeo on Saturday, November 13 from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. The doors will open at 7 p.m. and the evening will feature line dancing

in the barn and guests are encouraged to bring their own snacks and drinks to enjoy. Tickets are $25 in advance and are limited.

Ahead of the Veterans Day holiday and in recognition of the brave men and women of the United States Armed Forces, Oyster Bay Town Councilman Steve Labriola, Councilwoman Michele Johnson, Councilman Lou Imbroto, Councilman Tom Hand and Councilwoman Laura Maier joined with local Girl Scouts in delivering Hometown Heroes banners to veterans in communities throughout the Town of Oyster Bay. Earlier this year, banners were unveiled at parks throughout the Town in recognition of over 200 veterans and active duty personnel – both living and

deceased.

“I am so proud to have brought this beautiful community recognition program to the Town of Oyster Bay,” said Councilman Steve Labriola.

“The Hometown Heroes Banner program is an excellent opportunity to honor the service and sacrifice of the brave men and women who both served and continue to serve in our United States Armed Forces.
