The Charity of the Month for November is Association for Mental Health and Wellness
Since Veterans Day occurs in November, our Charity of the Month is one of Suffolk County’s foremost advocates for the interests of our veterans, the Ronkonkoma-based Association for Mental Health and Wellness (MHAW).
MHAW offers a wide range of support services to Suffolk County veterans by connecting them with affordable housing, medical and mental health assistance, case management, financial and legal referrals, employment assistance programs, and food pantries to help combat food insecurity.
This article in particular focuses on one important component of MHAW’s veteran services, the Joseph P. Dwyer Veterans Peer Support Project. Named to honor the memory of an Iraq War hero and Army medic from Mt. Sinai who lost his battle with PTSD, the Joseph P. Dwyer Veterans Peer Support Project is a peer-to-peer initiative offered in collaboration with the Suffolk County Veterans Service Agency.
The Dwyer Project serves veterans, service members, and their families with such post-service transitional issues as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and traumatic brain injury, although a formal diagnosis is not required for participation. They offer weekly peer groups both in person and virtual, and they also host monthly in-person community resource activities as well as a bi-monthly senior veteran group.
The Dwyer Project’s trained “Veteran Peer Mentors” have served in various branches of the Armed Forces and understand the reintegration needs of those who have been in the military, regardless of era or branch of service. This Project accepts all veterans, no matter their discharge status. All group sessions are confidential and anonymous in a safe, and trusting environment, free of judgment.
“Peer specialists are critical allies for our veterans,” says Colleen Merlo, CEO of the Association for Mental Health and Wellness. “They understand what other veterans are going through and can offer
As described by the federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, peer support workers are “people who have been successful in the recovery process who help others experiencing similar situations. Through shared understanding, respect, and mutual empowerment, peer support workers help people become and stay engaged in the recovery process and reduce the likelihood of relapse.”
It is a true power to have this type of communication,” said one a local veteran that is involved with The Dwyer Project.
“My facilitators are fantastic in organizing programs and ideas for how to help each other. The group is fundamental to what we need. When you get veterans together and get them talking, they can work out their issues. This is one of the most important programs for veterans I have ever seen.”
The Dwyer Project’s free, confidential, peer-to-peer approach has attracted support from both veterans and mental health professionals statewide. In fact, this year’s state budget includes funding for this Project in all 62 counties. Additionally, a national veteran peer initiative is pending in Congress, and it all started here in Suffolk County.
If you are a veteran interested in peer-to-peer support, or if you know a veteran in need, call (516) 807-4952 or email mcorinne@mhaw.org. Also, please visit www.dwyerproject.org for more information.
To every veteran this Veterans Day and always, thank you for your selfless service.

The Plainview Water District (PWD) successfully hosted its fifth annual Pharmaceutical Take Back Day and collected more than 300 pounds of unwanted or expired medications. These medications will now be disposed of properly in order to prevent them from making it into the community’s sole-source aquifer for drinking water. This District has now collected and properly disposed of more than 1,400 pounds of medications since it began this annual event five years ago.
“We are pleased to offer this opportunity to POB residents for the past five years,” said PWD Chairman Marc Laykind. “The turn out that we see each year shows that there is a need for a service like this in our community. The District is proud and looks forward to continuing to serve and work with residents to come together and protect our shared environment and water supply.”
When someone improperly disposes of
prescription and over-thecounter medicines, such as flushing them down the toilet or throwing them away in the garbage, there is a likelihood that the medications’ contents will ultimately make their way into the community water ways and water supply. If there is an elevated presence of toxins from pharmaceuticals in the groundwater, the District will have no choice but to invest in expensive treatment systems so the contaminants can be removed before they reach customers’ homes.
“Each year, the Plainview-Old Bethpage community continues to join us in participating in our annual Pharmaceutical Takeback Day to help us protect our water source,” said PWD Commissioner Andrew Bader. “The District is grateful for the continued communitywide involvement and support, as this event would not be successful without it. We thank all of those who participated this year, for helping us protect our environment
and water ways with the proper disposal of these medications.”
This year’s Pharmaceutical Take Back Day was once again held in partnership with the Nassau County Police Department. This anonymous, contactless drive-thru event included social distancing and safety protocols which helped the District bolster participation. The event was held at the PWD headquarters at 10 Manetto Hill Road on Saturday, October 22.
“Protecting our shared environment from these potentially harmful substances requires a collective community effort,” said PWD Commissioner Amanda Field. “For the past five years, the POB community has continued to show up to participate in the proper disposal of these substances. We continue to surpass the previous year’s collection totals and are thrilled to continue to offer this event annually. Thank you to all that came out to participate!”

The 14th Annual Bethpage Turkey Drive For Island Harvest Food Bank To Help Thousands Of Long Islanders Serve A Thanksgiving Meal To Their Family
Now in its 14th year, the Bethpage Turkey Drive to benefit Island Harvest Food Bank will take place on Friday, November 18, 2022, from 7:30 AM to 5:30 PM. The annual drive, which kicks off the holiday food drive season on Long Island, will include a no-contact donation car drive-through which will enable community residents to remain in their cars while volunteers remove donations from the vehicles.
Long Islanders are asked to donate frozen turkeys, non-perishable food items, supermarket gift cards or monetary donations. These donations will go directly to Island Harvest, which will help supply Thanksgiving meals to the more than 300,000 foodinsecure Long Islanders through its distribution network of over 400 food pantries, soup kitchens,
and other feeding programs on Long Island. Non-perishable food items needed include canned goods, cereal, pasta, rice, boxed juices, and shelfstable milk (please, no glass containers).
The Bethpage Turkey Drive will take place at Bethpage Federal Credit Union’s headquarters located at 899 South Oyster Bay Road in Bethpage.
For those unable to make an on-site donation on November 18th, most Bethpage branch locations are accepting non-perishable food items from November 1 through November 18, 2022, with the exception of the Bay Shore King Kullen and Chelsea, NYC branches.
Or, if you would rather show your support online, Bethpage is accepting online monetary donations at https://bit.ly/3zDUzyu through November 30,
2022. Every gift of $35 will help support a holiday meal for your Long Island neighbors.
“Bethpage is a proud, longtime partner and supporter of Island Harvest and its mission to help end hunger on Long Island,” said Linda Armyn, Chief Strategy & Marketing Officer. “I encourage everyone to join us this year by making a donation in whatever form and amount you can. With your help, we will make a difference.”
“So many of our neighbors on Long Island are a paycheck away from disaster, and record inflation and high grocery prices are putting additional burden on families struggling to put food on their tables,” said Randi Shubin Dresner, president & CEO, Island Harvest. “Fortunately, we have a longtime, valued
Hicksville Students Selected For NYSSMA All-State
partner in Bethpage Federal Credit Union helping us provide muchneeded supplemental food support to the most vulnerable among us. Their ongoing support and generosity are invaluable in our mission to end hunger and reduce food waste on Long Island.”
Patches will be given to all Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts who make a donation. Troop leaders can make a donation on behalf of troop members, and bring back patches for the entire troop.
Since the first Bethpage Turkey Drive was organized in 2009, hundreds of community volunteers have come out to assist in the collection of more than 42,000 turkeys and over 179,000 pounds of food, which were then given to Long Island families facing hardship in time for the holidays.
Island Harvest Food Bank has seen an increase in the requests for food and support services among the 400 community-based agencies it serves. About 70,000 individuals receive food assistance from the Island Harvest Food Bank network each week.

Clothing Donations Needed For Long Island Children
Ethical Friends of Children, a program helping needy families on Long Island, seeks clothing (tops, bottoms, pjs, sweaters and socks) in certain sizes. Specific sizes are: GIRLS: 3-4, 4-5 and 9-10 and BOYS: 7-8 and 9-10.
Ethical Friends of Children is an outreach
program of the Ethical Humanist Society of Long Island., established in 1985.
“We assist more than 2,500 children and their families each year by providing them clothing for children from newborn to size 12 as well as infant furniture at no cost,” says Pat Spencer of Port Washington. The “store” – staffed entirely by
volunteers – lets families pick out the things they need, at no cost to them.
Those interested in making contributions of clothing or gift cards, should call Ethical Friends of Children at 516-2805526 or email efoc@ehsli. org

Jericho 6-Year Old Wins “Guess The Weight Of The Pumpkin Contest”
Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board congratulate Darren Guo, a 6-year-old Jericho resident, who was the winner of the popular “Guess the Weight of the Pumpkin Contest” at the Town of Oyster Bay 2022 Family Fall & Halloween
Festival held at Marjorie R. Post Community Park in Massapequa. Darren predicted that the pumpkin would weigh 128 pounds, which was the closest guess to the actual weight of 126 pounds. Each year, the Festival provides a great opportunity to celebrate Halloween and the fall
season with activities that are fun for residents of all ages. The day’s itinerary included pumpkin picking at the Town’s ‘U-Pick’ pumpkin patch, Halloween games and giveaways, inflatables, hay rides, food trucks, and games, such as the “Guess the Weight of the Pumpkin Contest.”

The Hicksville Water District (HWD) hosted its second annual Pharmaceutical Take Back Day on October 22, encouraging residents to dispose of unused and expired medications in their homes through a safe, contactless drivethru event. The event provides the community with a safer alternative to flushing these medications down the drain, which can ultimately force them to end up in our water supply. Altogether, residents came out to dispose of approximately 100 pounds of pharmaceuticals,
allowing them to not only protect our water, but also to get these potentially harmful materials out of their homes.
“A significant aspect of the Hicksville Water District’s ability to provide our residents with the highest quality of water available is protecting our supply,” said HWD Chairman Nicholas Brigandi. “Pharmaceutical Take Back Day empowers our community to help us along in that mission, as it enables them to dispose of their unused medications in a safe and simple manner. Not only

The improper disposal of medications poses a threat to Long Island’s singlesource aquifer, as it opens up the possibility of foreign contaminants entering our water supply. One of the most common forms of improper disposal of these

LaMarca Offers Residents FREE
‘Do Not Knock’ Stickers
Oyster Bay Town Clerk Richard LaMarca announced that residents who wish to deter any potential door-to-door solicitors and peddlers can obtain a free, waterproof, vinyl ‘No Soliciting’ sticker through the Town Clerk’s Office.
Town Clerk LaMarca stated, “Now more than ever, our Town residents wish to remain unbothered at home by the potential nuisance of door-todoor peddlers. My office offers free ‘No Soliciting’ stickers to homeowners as a way to set clear boundaries with anyone approaching your home looking to do unwanted business. Contact us today for a free sticker.”
Town Clerk LaMarca further cautioned residents to remember a few simple guidelines to help avoid any potential pitfalls of being taken in by a fasttalking peddler or solicitor.
Residents are advised to check for a current Town-issued photo identification badge prior to doing any business with a doorto-door peddler. Photo ID issued by the Town Clerk’s Office is a good form of protection because it is issued only after an indepth background check of the individual has been made and full disclosure of the nature of their business is provided.
While nonprofit organizations are not required by law to have permits, Town Clerk LaMarca has urged these organizations to inform his office about when and where their members will be soliciting, with the information then forwarded to the local police precinct, along with the solicitor’s names. This provides residents with another way of checking any official status a solicitor may have.
To obtain a free, waterproof, vinyl ‘No Soliciting’ sticker, please call (516) 624-6333, and visit the www.oysterbaytown. com for further information on services offered by the Oyster Bay Town Clerk.
Collecting DVDs For U.S. Troops & Children’s Hospitals
Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board announced a partnership with Massapequa-based “Big Hy for Heroes” in an effort to collect DVDs for those deployed and serving overseas in the United States Armed Forces as well as movies for children’s hospitals. Donations will be accepted November 1st through November 30th and then delivered to Chaplains, Commanding Officers, Sergeant Majors and Sergeants around the globe to distribute to troops and arrange movie nights this holiday season.
Supervisor Saladino stated, “The Town of Oyster Bay is proud to partner with Big Hy for Heroes for our 5th Annual DVD Collection Drive and send thousands of DVDs to troops serving around the globe as well as to children receiving care in local hospitals. Help support these brave men, women and children by donating DVDs.”
The Big Hy for Heroes organization was founded in 2002 by Massapequa resident and WWII veteran Hyman Strachman who, along with his son Arthur Strachman, personally began sending DVDs to
U.S. troops overseas. Over the years, Big Hy for Heroes has shipped hundreds of thousands of DVDs all around the world, and continues to do so today.
Exciting, suspenseful, comedy and classic DVDs are among the most requested by the troops for movie nights. Children’s movies are needed for local hospitals. Residents can donate DVDs at any of the
following locations:
Town Hall North – 54 Audrey Avenue, Oyster Bay
Town Hall South –977 Hicksville Road, Massapequa
Additionally, letters of gratitude to soldiers and holiday cards for children are also welcome. For more information on the DVD Collection Drive for U.S. Troops and local Children’s Hospitals, please call (516) 624-6380.
