Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and members of the Town Board joined with the Oyster Bay-East Norwich School District and hundreds of local residents in dedicating ‘Billy Joel Way’ and presenting a ‘key to the town’ to legendary musician and environmental advocate Billy Joel. Officials, including Councilwoman Michele Johnson, Councilman Tom Hand, Councilwoman Laura Maier, Councilwoman Vicki Walsh, Town Clerk Rich LaMarca, Receiver Jeff Pravato, as

well as County Legislator Rose Marie Walker, also welcomed members of the Oyster Bay-East Norwich School District’s 6th Grade Advanced Band from James Vernon School, whose students performed for the music icon.

“Nothing chronicles the stories of our lives quite like music, and no one has told the story of what it was like to grow up here on Long Island quite like Billy Joel,” said Supervisor Saladino.

“His lyrics speak for every one of us. We identify with

him, and because of him, we all know that we share many of the same feelings, thoughts and experiences.

In many ways, he brings us together as suburban Long Islanders.”

TOWN OFFICIALS CELEBRATE DOGFEST - Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino, Councilman Steve Labriola, Councilwoman Laura Maier, and Receiver of Taxes Jeff Pravato joined local neighbors and their pets to celebrate Dogfest Long Island. This event benefits Canine Companions, a nonprofit that works to place expertly-trained service dogs to adults, children and veterans with disabilities, free of charge. Their mission is to help clients and their service dogs live with greater independence, and more than 400 people are currently waiting for their new canine partners. The event featured a fun day of games, inspiring speakers, activities for kids, service dog demonstrations and more.

War. Vietnam veterans also make up a sizable percentage of U.S. military veterans, as VA estimates indicate there were approximately 5.9 million veterans who fought in the Vietnam War in 2021.

Though veterans need not have served in wartime in order to be recognized and honored on Veterans Day, the vast majority of U.S. veterans served during wartime. According to the VA, 78 percent of veterans in 2021 had served during wartime.

Strategies For Coping With The Holidays Coping with the Holidays, a free forum sponsored by the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline and Support Program, will be held on Thursday, November 9 from 12 noon to 1 pm on zoom.

Oncology social worker Cara Livoti, LCSW, offers expertise in the ways individuals can utilize healthy coping strategies during the holiday season.

Participants will also learn about the multitude of support services offered from both hospital and community based social workers.

Ms. Livoti has been a part of the NYU Langone care team since 2011 with extensive experience in supporting not only her patients, but their caregivers and loved

ones. In 2021 she began working specifically with the breast cancer patient population at NYU Perlmutter Cancer Center.

Ms. Livoti is well-versed in the resources available through NYU PCC and the community for her breast cancer patients and takes great pride in providing comprehensive psychosocial care to those with which she works.

This free event is sponsored by The Junior Coalition of the Manhasset Women’s Coalition Against Breast Cancer and Northwell Health Cancer Institute.

Saladino And Town Board To Collect DVDs For U.S. Troops & Children’s Hospitals

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board announced a partnership with Massapequa-based “Big Hy for Heroes” in an effort to collect DVDs for those deployed and serving overseas in the United States Armed Forces as well as movies for children’s hospitals. Donations will be accepted November 1st through November 30th and then delivered to Chaplains, Commanding Officers, Sergeant Majors and Sergeants around the globe to distribute to troops and arrange movie nights this holiday season.

Supervisor Saladino stated, “The Town of

Oyster Bay is proud to partner with Big Hy for Heroes for our 5th Annual DVD Collection Drive and send thousands of DVDs to troops serving around the globe as well as to children receiving care in local hospitals. Help support these brave men, women and children by donating DVDs.” The Big Hy for Heroes organization was founded in 2002 by Massapequa resident and WWII veteran Hyman Strachman who, along with his son Arthur Strachman, personally began sending DVDs to U.S. troops overseas.

Over the years, Big Hy for Heroes has shipped

hundreds of thousands of DVDs all around the world, and continues to do so today.

Exciting, suspenseful, comedy and classic DVDs are among the most requested by the troops for movie nights. Children’s movies are needed for local hospitals. Breast Cancer Screenings At The Syosset Public Library Nassau County Legislator Arnold W. Appointments are required, and women who do not have insurance may be eligible for free mammograms through the Cancer Services Program.

Women with health insurance may be required to make a copayment.

Patients who have gone more than a year since their last mammogram will be required to get a

prescription from their doctor (if they have insurance) and provide any past films (if available).

Photo ID and an insurance card (if available) are required.

Bethpage Turkey Drive – The Largest Food Drive On Long Island – Aims To Collect 4,000 Turkeys And 40,000 Pounds Of Food On Friday, November 17 New For The 15th Anniversary This Year: Local Businesses Compete Against Each Other To Donate The Largest Number Of Turkeys The Bethpage Turkey Drive to benefit the Island Harvest Food Bank will take place on Friday, November 17, 2023, from 7:30 AM to 6:00 PM at Bethpage’s headquarters located at 899 South

Oyster Bay Road in Bethpage. This year marks the 15th anniversary of Long Island’s largest oneday food drive which to date, has donated more than 45,000 turkeys and over 200,000 pounds

Bethpage is issuing a Corporate Challenge encouraging local businesses and organizations to donate the largest amount of frozen turkeys and nonperishables and then drop off their donations on November 17. The business that provides the largest donation will be sent an ice cream truck to their location for all

employees to enjoy. To join the challenge, Long Island businesses and organizations can sign up here.

Raptors Of Nassau County’s South Shore Nature photographer Jay Koolpix will present Raptors of Nassau County’s South Shore, on Tuesday, November 14 at 7:30 PM at the Freeport Memorial Library, 144 W. Merrick Road (at S. Ocean Avenue).

The presentation includes fascinating photos and videos of South Shore raptors courting and mating, having meals, capturing prey, and feeding their young dependent nestlings.

These birds of prey possess speed, strength, keen eyesight, sharp beaks, and talons to hunt and feed on small vertebrates (birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and fish). Bald Eagles, Ospreys, Great Horned Owls, Northern Sawwhet Owls, Merlin, Cooper’s Hawks, Snowy Owls, and many more local raptors will be featured.
