The Charity of the Month for October is: The Cemetery of Lost Souls (lostsoulsli.com) Benefitting Melissa’s Wish The Cemetery of Lost Souls is a grass roots organization that gears up each year to create an elaborate Haunted House on the founder’s property, located at 350 Broadway in Massapequa Park. E v e r y bit of money raised through their annual event (admission, donations, sponsorships, etc.) is given to a chosen charity.

They have raised a lot of money over the years in donations alone and have donated to charities such as Autism Speaks, The Breast Cancer Research Foundation, Ronald McDonald House Charities and Long Island Cares.

This year they will bring the community a new interactive experience with the second Lost Souls Walk-Thru haunt, new rooms, new scares and new thrills! The remaining events will run on October 25-26, 31 and November 1-2 from 7PM-11:30PM. The chosen charity for 2019 is Melissa’s Wish, a non-profit organization founded with the purpose of providing short term, non-medical financial aid in the form of a grant to caregivers who are assisting those afflicted with a serious illness, injury or end of life event.

This homegrown haunt has been up and running for a few weeks so far this year and visitors have only good things to say! Below are some recent reviews:

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and The Workforce Partnership today announced that a Mega Job Fair will take place on Wednesday, October 30th at the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center, located at 1001 Stewart Avenue in Bethpage. There is no charge for admission and parking is free. Veterans’ admission begins an hour earlier, at 9:00 a.m., while doors for General Admission open at 10:00 a.m. The event runs until 2:00 p.m.

Employers from across Long Island will be seeking candidates for positions including entry and middle management level, licensed professional, hospitality and food service industries, banking, staffing and individuals with technical and IT experience.

Supervisor Saladino stated, “The Workforce Partnership and Town of

Oyster Bay are committed to helping residents find meaningful employment opportunities as well as assisting local businesses in recruiting qualified employees. This Mega Job Fair will connect private and public sector employers with job seekers, while also providing attendees with employability workshops onsite.”

The Town of Oyster Bay serves as administrator of The Workforce Partnership, a consortium of local governments funded by the Federal Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act that provides free, valuable resources to both employers and job seekers at Career Centers in Hicksville and Massapequa. These centers help train employees to meet the needs of the private sector, connecting qualified job seekers with employers, and by assisting applicants in accessing job

opportunities. The Centers offer Resource Rooms, which are equipped with state-of-the-art computer workstations, complete with Microsoft software and internet access.

Additionally, these Centers offer residents access to job listings, resource materials, photocopiers, fax machines and telephones. The Centers provide employability and computer workshops, as well as career counselors who will guide residents through their job search.

Computer workshops are taught on-site in modern computer labs. Residents can increase their marketability by updating or acquiring new computer skills at the Centers.

Mandalay Elementary School in Wantagh has opened its new Helping Hands food pantry, located in the elementary school. The pantry will assist needy families in the school community, but the broader goal is to service the entire district community, elementary guidance counselor Donna Shulman and third grade teacher Stacey Vespe said.

On Oct. 3, Wantagh Middle School studentvolunteers, who had previously graduated from Mandalay Elementary

School, conducted the food pantry’s first food sorting and packing. The students placed donated items on the newly built shelves and discussed which items were needed in the future. The middle school students receive credit for community service hours.

Ms. Shulman explained that she has seen an increased need for food donations. She and Ms. Vespe first contacted families already on the free and reduced lunch program to see if they could use the pantry’s services.

Interested families are then provided a list of items being stored in the pantry, and volunteers will pack boxes based on the checked off items. The request is confidential, and donation boxes can be picked up during off hours to provide anonymity.

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone today announced that the Suffolk County OneStop Employment Center will host its 6th Annual Job Fair in recognition of National Disability Employment Awareness Month on Friday, October 25 from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in Hauppauge.

Healthcare, retail, manufacturing, customer service, administrative, and information technology companies are scheduled to attend the job fair. There is no charge for admission and no registration is required.

“A disability should never be an obstacle for anyone looking to earn a living,” said Suffolk County Executive Bellone.

“We look to make it easy and accessible for those individuals to enter the labor force and work for a company that suits their skillsets.”

Every October, National Disability Employment Awareness Month celebrates the contributions of workers with disabilities and educates about the value of a workforce inclusive of their skills and talents. The nationwide campaign targets disability employment issues and honors the many diverse contributions of America’s

workers with disabilities.

There are more than 283,000 residents in Suffolk County with some type of disability.

The Suffolk County Department of Labor, Licensing, and Consumer Affairs assists the disabled in their job search, helps secure business licenses, and offers specific services every day. Employment Center counselors, specifically trained in disability issues and working exclusively with the Suffolk disabled, as identified by the Americans with Disabilities Act, (ADA), are available by appointment at the Hauppauge One-Stop and the New York State OneStop in Patchogue.

The Employment Center features various levels of assistive technology, maintaining a Sorenson video relay system and featuring NYS Verizon TTY relay service line 711, enabling the deaf, hard of hearing or speech impaired to communicate with hearing people using a standard voice telephone.

Disability accommodations, auxiliary aids and services are available upon request, and the Center features automatic wide doors, ramps, accessible restrooms, and special

Oyster Bay High School’s Michael Biggiani II graduated this past semester as the class salutatorian with one of the most impressive portfolios of accomplishments, accolades and awards ever garnered by a student at the school. He can now add winning a $50,000 scholarship from the Jovia Financial Credit Union to his long list of achievements.

Biggiani, who is now enrolled at the University of Virginia studying biophysics, was chosen by the Westbury-based Jovia as its 2019 Premier Scholarship recipient, which awards $50,000 over

four years to help defray the cost of the winner’s education.

For years, the credit union has made a number of scholarship programs available to Long Island

students, awarding more than $1.5 million in total grants to help area families with the cost of a college education.

Scholarship recipients are members (or have a parent or guardian who is a member) of the credit union. Previously known as NEFCU, Jovia is the new name of the credit union, which announced its re-branding this past week.

To apply for the annual scholarship, students need to have completed at least 50 hours of community service and a four-year overall high school grade of 90 or above.

Biggiani excelled academically, as well as

athletically and musically at Oyster Bay. A seventime All-County musician (trombone), he has performed at Carnegie Hall with his high school band, and was a three-time AllConference tennis player.

Recently, he interned at the Partners for the Future program at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory.

He also won the Xerox Award for Innovation and Technology, which recognizes students who share in the pursuit of innovative approaches and appreciation for the possibilities of technology.
