Fire Safety For Students Students at Charles Campagne Elementary School in the Bethpage Union Free School District learned the importance of more than just to stop, drop and roll during a special visit from the Bethpage Fire Department. Fire Chief Frank DeBobes

Jr. spoke to the students about having an exit plan and meeting point, as well as what to do and not to do in the event of a fire. Most importantly, students got to experience the sounds and learn the function of all the equipment that a responding firefighter

would be using in response to a fire call. Each of the students left the presentation with a packet, filled with a coloring book and stickers with the direct number of the Bethpage Fire Department.

The Cemetery of Lost Souls is a grass roots organization that gears up each year to create an elaborate Haunted House on the founder’s property, located at 350 Broadway in Massapequa Park. E v e r y bit of money raised through their annual event (admission, donations, sponsorships, etc.) is given to a chosen charity. They rely heavily on devoted individuals and community support, as the actors and people who put on the haunt are volunteers. They have raised a lot of money over the years in donations alone and have donated to charities such as Autism Speaks, The Breast Cancer Research Foundation, Ronald McDonald House Charities and Long Island Cares. This year they will bring the community a new interactive experience with the second Lost Souls Walk-Thru haunt, new rooms, new scares and new thrills! The event will run on October 12, 18-19, 25-26, 31 and November 1-2 from 7PM-11:30PM. The chosen charity for 2019 is Melissa’s Wish, a non-profit organization founded with the purpose of providing short term, non-medical financial aid in the form of a grant to caregivers who are assisting those afflicted with a serious illness, injury or end of life event.

You can benefit Melissa’s Wish in various ways. Of course you can attend one of this year’s Haunted House events (all proceeds will benefit this organization), you can donate on their website or you can become a sponsor of their

organization. Additionally, you can become involved with the Cemetery of Lost Souls in many ways. They are actively looking for volunteers in the following areas: Digital Marketing (to help with social media marketing), Scare Team Members (actors to help put on the event), Security (watching over the event and making sure all guests are safe), Bake Team Members (to donate baked goods to sell at some of the events) and lastly, they are looking for an Electrician (to volunteer a few hours to help finalize last minute details for the event). Volunteers must be 16 years of age and volunteer time can count towards community service hours! Sponsorship opportunities are also available. This organization is looking for local businesses to sponsor the event. All sponsors will be listed on their website and will be given the opportunity to have their logo and or a small clip on a big screen at the event in front of the waiting line. This will be on a loop, so there is lots of exposure to be had! Lastly, donations are welcomed at any time on their website. To fill out a volunteer form, learn more about sponsorship opportunities or to donate, please visit their website at lostsoulsli.com. Additionally, you can email jpernice@ lostsoulsli.com with any questions you may have. Don’t forget to also visit melissaswish.org to learn more about this year’s chosen charity!

Donations will be accepted through November 15th, and then delivered to Chaplains, Commanding Officers, Sergeant Majors and Sergeants around the globe to distribute to troops and arrange movie nights this holiday season. by the LIAA as “the best of the best” on Long Island, artistically and academically. “We are all extremely proud of these students and their impressive achievements,” said Dr. Chris Rogutsky Bleecker, Principal of LIHSA. “Arts are essential to education. As Long Island’s only public arts school, it is our mission to provide a nurturing environment that exposes students to experiences and opportunities they would not have anywhere else. We empower young artists to achieve their full potential, both in the classroom and in their chosen disciplines. Awards like this demonstrate how LIHSA

helps students to unlock their gifts and successfully realize their talents.” To earn an award in the Scholar-Artists program, students must demonstrate the highest level of artistic excellence, as well as superior academic achievement (a grade point average of 90 or above). Candidates are evaluated based on performances, a portfolio of their work and a written essay about how the arts have enriched their lives. Winners are chosen by a committee of arts educators and other professionals, with the final selection being made by a separate steering committee.

(NAPSI)—More and more Americans are calling the nation’s cities home. According to 2010 Census data, an estimated 80.7 percent of Americans now live in urban areas—up from 79 percent in 2000. Not only does this urban population increasingly tax the country’s infrastructure, but it is also having an effect—both directly and indirectly—on

the environment. The Heat Is On The urban heat island (UHI) effect is a phenomenon in which metropolitan areas are typically warmer than nearby rural areas mainly due to the large areas of paved surfaces and buildings that capture the sun’s energy, hold it and slowly radiate the heat back out into the air. The

concentration of heat in these densely populated regions creates additional health risks for residents due to heat exposure and the enhanced formation of air pollutants, especially ozone. Rooftops, roads and parking lots comprise a large percentage of the man-made surface area in urban areas. When analyzing effective UHI

mitigation strategies, scientists at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory determined that widespread deployment of “cool roofs” and “cool pavements” would decrease urban temperatures, which in turn could offset some or all of the projected future warming trends. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, a

cool roof is one that has been designed to reflect more sunlight and absorb less heat than a standard roof. Beyond the building itself, cool roofs can also benefit the environment by: • Reducing local air temperatures; • Lowering peak electricity demand, which can help prevent power outages; and • Reducing power plant emissions, including carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides and mercury. In order to help protect the environment and meet increasingly stringent ordinances calling for cool roof technology, 3M developed Cool Roofing Granules. These granules are used in shingles that can be energy efficient, solar reflective and economically friendly. This technology can reduce urban heating as well as lower energy consumption in climates with year-round cooling needs. In addition, many of the shingles that contain 3M Cool Granules meet Energy Star requirements, making them the premier choice for green building. Further, the granules are available in a wide variety of rich colors that can create the perfect shingle color blend. The Eradication of Smog Another problem in urban areas is smog

pollution, caused by a buildup of nitrogen oxides in the air. An estimated four in 10 Americans currently live in counties with unhealthy levels of particle pollution. To combat this growing concern, 3M recently launched Smog-reducing Granules, which help remove smog pollution using roofing shingles. Integrated throughout a shingle’s surface, the granules are designed with a specialized photocatalytic coating applied to the base mineral. As sunlight hits the shingles, radicals are generated, transforming nitrogen oxide gases into water-soluble ions, thereby improving air quality. “3M is leading the way with roofing technology solutions for improving environmental impacts on human health and welfare,” said Frank Klink, Ph.D., senior laboratory manager, 3M. “The roofing granules are a first for residential asphalt shingles. The new 3M granules will help roofing manufacturers develop high-quality, aesthetically pleasing shingles that can turn any roof into an active smog-reducing catalyst, essentially becoming smog’s worst enemy.” To learn more about 3M’s commitment to using science for the greater good, visit www.3m.com/ sustainability.

Roofing Solutions To Environmental Concerns

An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but a recent study found drinking tea might keep the cardiologist at bay. The USDA reported that men and women who drank black tea for three weeks reduced their total and bad cholesterol (LDL) levels by an average of 7.5 percent. Researchers concluded that drinking tea may reduce the

risk of coronary heart disease. Antioxidants called flavonoids, found in both green and black teas, are thought to be potent weapons in the fight against heart disease. That news may be especially important for women, given that heart disease kills more women than all forms of cancer combined including breast cancer.

St. Francis Community of Faith for All People • 631.416.4308 • www.cfapli.net Dear Friend of St. Francis, We the ministers of the community would like to offer all our Roman brother and sisters who have been hurt spiritually, emotionally or in any other way to consider sharing in our safe and inclusive community of faith. St. Francis is Catholic in its tradition celebrating all the sacraments by those whose ordination is in line with Rome but who do not fall under the authority or regulations of the Roman Church. Our community is made up of married clergy, woman ministers, ministers who work full time as teachers, mental health providers and in the field of vocational services. We come from various backgrounds ethnically, culturally and spiritually but the one thing we share in common is our love for the Divine and a desire to deepen our personal relationship with the Divine and each other in community. We have as our mission to serve those in the community who are poor spiritually, emotionally, physically and who have been disenfranchised and disillusioned from their faith communities. All are welcome to the table of the Divine as we hear the word of the Lord and share in the Eucharist.

We want our Roman brother and sisters who have experienced the pain and hurt of disillusionment to know that we are here for you and we want to provide you a community where your faith will be nourished and deepened as you journey not alone but with others seeking to do the will of the Lord and fulfill our Baptismal call to be Priest, Prophet and King. If you are interested in our community we share the liturgy on alternating weekends on Saturday at 4:00PM and the following Sunday at 10:00AM and we have a fellowship hour following. If you prefer to speak with one of the ministers before coming to the community we ask that you visit our website www.cfapli.net and choose a minister to contact on our leadership page. We hope to hear from you soon. We ask that you do not give up on community because of the pain and disillusionment that was caused but that you seek a new community to deepen your faith and heal your pain. May the love, joy and peace of the Divine be with you always, +Bishop Kenneth Corbin, M.Div., LCSW Protector and Spiritual Guide of St. Francis Community of Faith for All People

Those who are members of our community and other Independent Sacramental Communities find that there are no barriers to sharing one’s faith nor any barriers on who one chooses to love and marry. We are an open inclusive safe community. There are no judgements to one’s past and the only requirement is to have a desire to share one’s experience of the Divine with fellow journeyers. We encourage our members to take an active role in the community and to realize that the community is not that of the priest but of the faithful who have a voice and should shape the future of the community with its servant priests.

Hearing Mr. McGeady’s story brought many of us to tears. It was a reminder to all of us that while there are many who are brain aneurysm survivors, about 30 percent of cases with a ruptured aneurysm are fatal.” Mr. McGeady, 34, of Clifton Park, NY, was joined on stage by brain aneurysm survivors Luisina Alonzo, 22, of Bellerose, Queens, and Cynthia Mathis, 40, of New Hyde Park, LI, who each shared their stories. Walk participants were reminded of the warning signs of a brain aneurysm: severe headache, nausea, blurred or double vision, stiff neck or neck pain, pain above or behind the eye and loss of sensation. ### About Northwell Health Northwell Health is New York State’s largest health care provider and private employer, with 23 hospitals, about 750 outpatient facilities and more than 13,600 affiliated physicians. Approximately 1,000 walkers helped raise $100,000 during Long Island’s 11th annual Brain Aneurysm Awareness Walk at Jones Beach State Park, hosted by Northwell Health’s Brain Aneurysm Center and the Brain Aneurysm Foundation. Survivors and their families, along with those who lost a loved one, attended the September 21 event, which has raised nearly $800,000 since its inception. Proceeds from the walk will support essential research at the two organizations. “This year’s walk was extra special,” said David J. Chalif, MD, chief of neurosurgery at Southside Hospital and director of Northwell Health’s Brain Aneurysm Center. “While our guest speakers in the past were brain aneurysm survivors, we were touched this year to have as one of our guest speakers Greg McGeady, who lost his older brother to a ruptured brain aneurysm.

The Bethpage Union Free School District is proud to announce that Bethpage High School has been named a 2019 National Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education. Bethpage High School was nominated for the award by the New York State Education Department. District administrators then completed a comprehensive

application about school practices. Bethpage High School was recognized as an Exemplary High Performing school — among the top schools in New York State. “Being named a National Blue Ribbon School is one of the highest recognitions a school can receive,” said Superintendent of Schools David Schneider. “This award is a testament to the dedication of our

entire school community, including our Board of Education, faculty, administrators, students and parents. Thank you for your continued commitment to our schools and for ensuring that Bethpage students are afforded opportunities to succeed in all areas. We celebrate this honor with each of you!” “All of our teachers, parents and administrators share

the common goal of providing the best possible education for our students,” said Bethpage High School Principal Nicholas Jantz. “I thank our staff for their unwavering dedication, our parents for their ongoing partnership and our students for their enthusiasm and commitment to working hard. We are truly honored to be named a Blue Ribbon School.”

19

National Blue Ribbon School District officials will represent Bethpage High School at a two-day awards ceremony in Washington, D.C., in November to celebrate this prestigious recognition. According to the Department of Education’s website, the “National Blue Ribbon Schools program has honored America’s most successful public and non-public elementary, middle, and high

schools” since 1982. The department also states, “A National Blue Ribbon Schools flag waving overhead has become a trademark of excellence, a symbol of quality recognized by everyone from parents to policymakers in thousands of communities.”

jazz musicians from across the state. Only one or two pianists are selected to perform, which truly makes it an honor to be considered. In addition to playing piano for the Hicksville High School Jazz Band, Farris is also a violinist for the school orchestra. Thousands of students auditioned for All-State honors last spring at solo and ensemble festivals throughout New York State. Approximately 900 students were chosen to participate or serve as alternates for ensembles based on their proficiency

All-State Musician Named Congratulations to Hicksville High School senior Faaris Ali, who has been named an All-State musician for piano by the New York State School Music Association. Faaris will serve as an alternate for the highly selective jazz ensemble, which will perform at the NYSSMA Annual Winter Conference, scheduled to take place in Rochester, New York from Dec. 5-8. According to Hicksville music teacher and jazz band director Jonathan Shmuel, the All-State Jazz Ensemble is comprised of less than 20 of the best

scores achieved at these festivals and teacher recommendations. NYSSMA is one of the largest and most successful music organizations in the country. The annual Winter Conference attracts almost 4,000 participants and offers numerous workshops and showcases. Farris is the first Hicksville High School musician named to the NYSSMA Jazz Ensemble in nearly 20 years. You can hear him perform at the Middle/High School Jazz Showcase on February 4, 2020 at Hicksville Middle School.

Start Breathing Clean (NAPSI)—A new year, whether the one on the calendar or a more personal milestone, is a good time to give your health and wellbeing a new start, too. Here are three hints on how: 1. Be active—but don’t set too high a goal. Just walking for 30 minutes a day, even in 10-minute increments, can make a difference. 2. Eat right. Go for more fruits and vegetables; fewer

sugary drinks, red meats and high-fat, processed foods. 3. Reduce indoor pollution. Get your HVAC system cleaned by a NADCA professional. In most homes, people generate a great deal of contaminants and air pollutants, such as dander, dust and chemicals. These are pulled into the HVAC system and build up in the ductwork. NADCA sets the industry standard

for HVAC system cleaning and its members must have at least one certified Air Systems Cleaning Specialist (ASCS) on staff, comply with a Code of Ethics and acquire continuing education credits. For further facts and tips and to find a nearby NADCA member, go to www.nadca. com.
