Colonial era Rock Hall Museum lends an historic flavor to a modern day celebration during the Annual Country Fair on Saturday and Sunday, October 25th and 26th.

Supervisor Kate Murray invites visitors to enjoy a festive weekend of funfilled activities, including a harvest market, live concerts, scarecrow making, pumpkin patch, food court, pony rides, animal farm and a craft area for children.

“In addition to all the excitement of a traditional country fair, a visit to Rock Hall Museum provides a wonderful opportunity to relive the sights and sounds of Colonial era Hempstead Town,” commented Supervisor Murray. “Along with the many country fair events, I invite you to tour

the museum and experience an authentic 18th Century home and life-style.”

With FREE admission and FREE parking, the fair runs from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, October 25th and Sunday, October 26th.

The museum is located at 199 Broadway in Lawrence.

A busy weekend of Colonial era activities includes fascinating recreations of 18th Century cooking, games, music and craft making. There will also be regularly scheduled tours of the museum.

Featured entertainers at this year’s Country Fair include, Colonial Magician “Levram the Great” and country music group “Bob Stump and the Blue Mountain Band.” The fair is also highlighted by a variety of children’s activities

including a colonial craft workshop (fee), a pumpkin patch, pony rides, scarecrow making (fee), games and contests.

The Country Fair is one of many popular events scheduled for Rock Hall in the months ahead.

I first became a Yankees fan back in the fall of 1995, as the team made its first run at the postseason since 1981, with the legendary Don Mattingly at its helm. For the first time in my lifetime, I understood the magnitude of this storied organization. And then, just like that, the run was over.

Mattingly walked off into the sunset, having never made it to a World Series. The end of an era.

But there, waiting in the wings, was a rookie shortstop, destined to pick up the torch and run with it. And run he did, for the next 20 seasons, leading the Yankees to five World Championships

and racking up countless milestones along the way.

Derek Jeter exemplified what it meant to be a true Yankee in an era when there were very few, if any, athletes doing things the “right” way, never mind in a city as unforgiving as New York.

Much has been said, and written, over these last several weeks – really, throughout the past year, since Jeter announced his plans to retire at the end of the 2014 season – analyzing the legacy of the player, the upbringing of the man, his place in Yankees, and baseball, lore.

To that, I can only add the following: while he may never have been the “best” in any one statistical category, as

relentlessly pointed out by rival fans and the national media, he was undeniably in a class by himself in the only categories that counted – dignity, sportsmanship, integrity… and, oh yeah, he had quite the knack for coming through in the clutch, when the stakes were the highest, the pressure the greatest. Not bad for an “overrated” player, right?

Yankees fan or not, these last several weeks have been quite the emotional rollercoaster. An historic era in Yankees history has come to a close, the only one my generation has had the privilege to witness.

And what a privilege it was.

Movement Speaks STUDIO OF DANCE

Movement Speaks Studio of Dance recently opened its doors in Babylon Village, at 225 Deer Park Avenue.

After having danced for 27 years and taught for nearly 15 of those years, partners Aileen Smisek and Megan Connell decided to take the leap and open a dance studio of their own.

Movement Speaks offers classes for children from ages 18 months through adult levels. These include: Mommy & Me, Pre-School, Ballet, Tap, Jazz, Hip Hop, Lyrical, Contemporary/Modern, along with a competition team training class. They also feature an award-winning competitive team, open to all serious dancers.

Aileen and Megan’s choreography has been honored through the years with numerous prestigious awards at dance

competitions, both on the Regional and National level. Many of their students have gone on to dance in college and beyond.

Aileen and Megan plan to involve the studio in upcoming community events such as the Babylon Fall Festival and the Old-Fashioned Night of Shopping. Also in the works for the coming year are a Zumbathon, a Mommy & Daughter Tea Party and, during the holiday season, a “12 Days Of Christmas” event where parents can drop their children off at the studio for a dance class and a special project while they shop locally in the Village.

Champions Against Hunger Now in its 21st year, Island Harvest Food Bank’s annual Taste of the Harvest Celebration remains the organization’s premier fundraiser to help provide critical food support to more than 300,000 Long Islanders struggling with hunger every day. This year’s gala will be held on Tuesday, October 21st, at 6 p.m. at the Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury, New York, and will recognize three outstanding individuals for their commitment to helping end hunger and reducing food waste on Long Island.

Not your typical fundraising dinner, the Taste of the Harvest Celebration brings together Long Island’s leading restaurants, caterers, country clubs and other fine food establishments to offer guests a sumptuous sampling of gourmet food and desserts. Other highlights of the evening

The Long Island Heart Walk was an opportunity for people to improve their health by walking, while simultaneously raising funds to help fight heart disease and stroke. Because Life is Why, they will continue to support more scientific research, stronger community education, healthier schools, safer neighborhoods, improved treatment protocols and helping families until there’s a world free of heart disease and stroke.

The days’ event also included a morning health

The event included a petting zoo, pony rides, a raffle and a variety of vendors.

Photo Exhibit Winners The Opening Reception of the Art League of Long Island’s photography exhibit titled Pattern & Rhythm Through the Lens held on September 28th celebrated works by 42 artists from the tri-state area. This juried exhibit challenged photographers to explore the patterns and rhythms of the world around them. The photographers found these rhythmic patterns in man-made structures, nature, shadows and light, and more, using the camera lens to focus our attention on their imaginative visions and interpretations.

works out of more than 581 entries in the exhibit, singling out four artists to share the distinction of Awards of Excellence and five to share Honorable Mentions.

Louis Grottano, who serves as a caregiver for his wife who has early-onset Alzheimer’s disease, was the event’s guest speaker. Hospital Project Stony Brook University showcased the construction progress of its new Stony Brook Children’s Hospital facility during a ceremony yesterday where President Samuel L. Stanley Jr., M.D., was joined by public officials, generous donors, young patients and their families, and hundreds of administrators, physicians and staff. The new facility, which will have 100 beds and occupy two stories of a new 10-story Hospital Pavilion, is slated to open in 2016.

President Stanley expressed gratitude to Sen. Kenneth P. LaValle and Sen. John Flanagan for securing more than $50 million for an expansion project that will help construct the medical and research translation (MART) building and the new Hospital Pavilion. The combined $425M project is the largest capital construction project within the State University of New York (SUNY) system in the past two decades. President Stanley also announced that the new Children’s Hospital has now received nearly $20 million in philanthropic contributions from hundreds of community members and businesses. This total includes a $9 million matching challenge grant from an anonymous donor, which was met recently when the Knapp Swezey Foundation pledged $2.7 million toward Stony Brook Children’s Hospital.

“Today is a celebration for the children – the past, present and future patients of Stony Brook Children’s Hospital,” Dr. Stanley said. “Stony Brook Children’s ensures that Long Island’s 400,000 children and their families have access to state-of-the-art pediatric services close to home.”

Stony Brook Children’s Hospital is the only dedicated children’s hospital located in the 100 miles between the Nassau/Queens border and Montauk, and the only children’s hospital on Long Island associated with a medical research institution.

Dr. Stanley paid tribute to state Sens. LaValle (R-Port Jefferson) and Flanagan (R-East Northport) for being

such strong advocates for Stony Brook Children’s.

“Our children – and our children’s children – owe a debt of gratitude to you for making this day a reality,” he said.

“This hospital will provide a healthcare facility that is second to none in our region,” Sen. LaValle said. “I am happy to be instrumental in the delivery of what will be a leading healthcare facility for children.”

Sen. Flanagan added, “The expansion of Children’s Hospital continues to solidify Stony Brook as a premiere teaching hospital, delivering the highest quality of medical care from some of the best doctors and medical

staff in the world.”

The new hospital will feature private family-centric rooms; separate pediatric inpatient areas for oncology, adolescent and intensive care; the general pediatrics unit; a pediatric procedure suite; patient playrooms and a family lounge.

Additionally, the expanded facility is expected to help recruit and retain the best pediatric doctors in the country and expand the research frontier toward developing groundbreaking therapies for the cure of childhood disease and disability.

“An essential mission of Stony Brook Children’s is to train the next generation of doctors and to push back

the frontiers of translational medical research,” said Kenneth Kaushansky, M.D., Stony Brook University School of Medicine Dean and Sr. Vice President for Health Sciences. “This expansion will advance the training of pediatricians and pediatric specialists and pediatric researchers for Suffolk County, for Long Island and beyond.”

More than 8,500 infants, children and young adults are admitted each year to Stony Brook Children’s Hospital, which in its existing facility operates 106 pediatric beds and has more than 200 full-time and voluntary pediatric physicians and surgeons in 33 different specialties.

“The new Children’s Hospital will reflect the Children’s Hospital difference – family-centered, age-appropriate care from highly trained specialists,” said Margaret McGovern, M.D., Ph.D., Professor and Chair, Department of Pediatrics, Stony Brook University School of Medicine and Physician-In-Chief, Stony Brook Children’s Hospital.

“It’s a comprehensive approach that addresses the unique physical, emotional and developmental needs of children, from infancy through young adulthood … from the Ronald McDonald Family Room, to Wi-Fi enabled classrooms to help kids keep up with their schoolwork, to LED wall lights that allow children to customize the look of their rooms,” she added.

The 225,000 square-foot Hospital Pavilion and the 240,000 square-foot MART Building are being constructed adjacent to Stony Brook University Hospital on the Stony Brook Medicine campus. A $50 million commitment from Jim and Marilyn Simons enabled Stony Brook University to qualify for a $35 million NYSUNY 2020 Challenge Grant, making construction of the MART possible. The Hospital Pavilion and the MART will bring some 4,200 project-related and specialized research jobs to the region.

The Town of Oyster Bay 2014-2015 Distinguished Artists Concert kicks off the fall season with a number of performances at various libraries throughout the Town, Councilman Joe Pinto announced.

“The Distinguished Artists Concert series returns this fall after once again proving to be one of the Town’s most popular programs. Our monthly performances run throughout the year and feature a diverse collection of musical acts and dance programs,” Councilman Pinto stated. “The concerts are all free of charge and illustrate the various interests our residents here in the Town have.

Learn To Skate Town of Oyster Bay residents are invited to “Learn to Skate” this winter by registering for skating lessons at the Town of Oyster Bay’s Ice Skating Center, located at 1001 Stewart Avenue in Bethpage, according to Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Rebecca Alesia.

“The ice skating center offers skating class for residents all throughout the year,” Councilwoman Alesia said. “Registration for Series 2 (November 3rd through December 21st) will begin on October 19th. Those interested can register at the rink, online (www.TheRinx.com) or by phone 516.797.4126.”

“Learn to Skate” offers group skating lessons to beginners through advanced levels of figure skating and hockey.

Skaters are paired based on age and skill, ranging from pre-school and basic skills through advanced levels.

The program is seven

weeks in length with the exception of Thursday and Friday classes which are prorated for six weeks. All classes have a duration of 30 minutes. For residents, the fee is $135 for the session. For non-residents the fee is $175. The “Learn to Skate” schedule is: Mondays, Wednesdays & Fridays from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., Tuesdays & Thursdays 10:00 a.m. to Noon, Saturdays from 11:50 a.m. to 12:50 p.m. and Sundays from 12:15 p.m. to 12:45 p.m. The rink will be closed on Thanksgiving (November 27th) and Christmas.

Registration costs include admission into the session for which you are registered on the day of the lesson, membership in the United States Figure Skating (USFS) Basic Skills Program, USFS record book for NEW members, and stickers and USFS Badges upon mastering of each level. There will also be an evaluation

on week seven with a recommendation for the next series. There will be no refunds or makeups and skate rental is not included in price. Helmets, gloves or mittens and warm layers are recommended for all skaters.

“The Rinx Skating School staff is comprised of experienced and qualified professionals, governed by US Figure Skating, USA Hockey and Professional Skaters Association. Their main idea is simple; teach the fundamentals of ice skating with a major focus on fun,” Councilwoman Alesia said. “We take pride in offering excellent programs that are great for every skater, whether you are young or young at heart you are sure to have fun learning to skate.”

For the fourth consecutive year Good Samaritan Hospital, in collaboration with the West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition marked Breast Cancer Awareness Month with a field of pink flags, displayed on the hospital’s front lawn, honoring cancer patients.

Supporters gathered to pay tribute to all those affected by the disease.

Hospital administration, elected officials, members of the West Islip Fire Department and Coalition were on hand to lend their support. Members of the

West Islip High School’s vocal ensemble Vocal Motion, performed an inspirational song as part of the moving ceremony.

This year marked 20 years since Good Samaritan opened its Breast Health Center created in partnership with the West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition to improve the region’s efforts at early detection of breast cancer.

Field Trip Arranged

On September 8th, Joe Delgado SILO Executive Director and Marilyn Tucci SILO Community Outreach Specialist created an opportunity for disabled and visually impaired individuals to experience Peconic Landing’s Art Without Barriers Sculpture Garden.

This is Peconic’s 5th Annual Sculpture Exhibition in which they strive to fulfill their mission to provide a lifestyle that recognizes the diversity of peoples’ interests, abilities and ambitions.

Art Without Barriers - “what you hear is what you see” - is dedicated to widening the opportunity

for appreciation of critically acclaimed sculpture by people who are visually impaired/disabled.

Accessibility to sculptors’ work has been enhanced using “Audio Description,” a form of assistive audio technology developed by museums and theaters whereby audio devices are given to each visually impaired or disabled person which allows them to focus on the features of the artwork.

Each device has a Audio Description of the all sculptures within the garden and therefore allows each individual to hear the descriptive language describing the

piece while touching the sculpture.

SILO is the New York State Designated Center for Independent Living Services. It is a non-forprofit Human Services Agency dedicated to working with people with disabilities, elderly individuals and their families.
