Fourteen seniors from Syosset High School have been named National Merit Scholarship semifinalists.

Sarina Awatramani, Michelle Gery, Jared Goff, Andrea He, Philip Jang, Eugene Kim, Natalie Lo, Jessica Page, Janvi Pamnani, Ben Rhee, Yash Samantaray, Sabrina Sussman, Jonah Wu and Michael Ye are among the 16,000 high school students nationwide awarded this distinction by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.

Syosset’s 14 semifinalists qualified by scoring among the highest in the state on the Preliminary SAT/ National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test in 2015, including the top 1 percent nationally. As a result they will compete for approximately 7,500 National Merit scholarships worth more than $33 million. Finalists will be announced in February 2017, with the winners to be named in the spring.

Fall Fitness Classes The Town of Oyster Bay’s popular Fall Fitness programs will be returning this October for residents interested in maintaining or improving their fitness.

The Fall Fitness classes will be held at the Hicksville Athletic Center.

These fitness programs are for individuals 18 years of age or older and are geared toward increasing flexibility,

improving muscle tone and building strength.

Courses available for the fall include Zumba, yoga, and cardio kickboxing. It is important to note that the physical condition of each individual will be taken into account by the program’s instructors, who will then tailor each session for participants to gain the best results.

Fall Fitness programs will take place at the Town of Oyster Bay Hicksville Athletic Center (167 Broadway, Hicksville) from 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, September 27th, and Thursday September 29th, and from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Saturday, October 1st. availability. Each ten to twelve week program is $60 for residents and $70 for non-residents.

Zumba classes will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. on Mondays (beginning Monday, October 10th), and 7:45 to 8:45 p.m. on Wednesdays (beginning Wednesday, October 12th).

The yoga classes will be held on Mondays from 10 to 11 a.m. (starting October

10th), Tuesdays from 8 to 9 p.m. (starting October 11th) and Saturdays from 9 to 10 a.m. (starting October 15th).The cardio kickboxing classes will be held on Mondays from 8 to 9 p.m. beginning on October 10th.

The badminton program begins Thursday, October 13th, and will be conducted on Thursdays from 8:30 to 10:30 p.m., Fridays from 9 to 10:30 p.m., and Sundays from 8:30 to 10:30 p.m. The

volleyball program begins Tuesday, October 11th and will be held on Mondays and Tuesdays from 9 to 10:30 p.m., and Saturdays from 8:30 to 10:30 p.m.

The programs, which are 12 weeks in duration, are $75 for residents and $100 for non-residents. Proof of residency is required for the discount.

Registration for both programs will take place at the Town of Oyster Bay Hicksville Athletic Center on Tuesday, October 4th from 7 to 9 p.m., Thursday, October 6th from 7 to

9 p.m. and Saturday, October 8th from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Please note that the schedule is subject to change and residents are encouraged to inquire about special holiday scheduling.

60th Anniversary

Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Rebecca M. Alesia recently visited the Mid-Island Y Jewish Community Center (JCC) in Plainview to join in celebrating the 60th Anniversary of the MidIsland Y JCC. Over the last six decades, the Mid-Island Y JCC has provided vital services and fostered Jewish identity, personal growth, family strength and community.

Four Syosset High School students have been selected to perform at the National Association for Music Education’s AllNational Honor Ensembles Conference in Grapevine, Texas from November 10th-13th. Three students will perform with the All-National Symphony Orchestra, while one will sing with the All-National Mixed Choir.

The high school choir performed the “Star Spangled Banner” and “Siyahamba” in honor of the fallen heroes and victims who lost their lives 15 years ago.

The sculpture was designed and created by Long Island artist David Haussler, but separately,

inside the classroom, students were challenged to sketch designs for the sculpture. Graphic arts students were shown the pieces of debris they needed to incorporate in their design, and submitted these sketches to the Chamber of Commerce.
