Northwell Health and the Americana Manhasset raised a record total of over $1.1 million for women’s health at the 25th annual Katz Institute for Women’s Health Luncheon and Fashion Show featuring the Salvatore Ferragamo Fall 2017 Collection. Two former patients took the runway at Old Westbury Gardens and shared their personal stories as they walked alongside the physicians who impacted their lives. Supermodel Carol Alt, also a patient of the Katz Institute, surprised guests in attendance and walked the runway to thank her doctors for the care she has received. Iris and Saul Katz, longtime supporters of Northwell Health and

partners in the creation of the Katz Institute for Women’s Health and the Katz women’s hospitals, were celebrated as the event’s honorees. Presented by the Partners Council for Women’s Health, coanchor of Fox 5’s Good Day New York, Rosanna Scotto emceed the event, which supports the unique and complex health care needs of women. “At Katz Institute for Women’s Health, we see women’s health differently,” said Stacey Rosen, MD, Northwell Health’s vice president of women’s health. “Our mission is to create a new model of women’s health that not only delivers integrated, specialized clinical care, but also educates and empowers

women to proactively take care of themselves and their families.” To date, the Katz Institute Luncheon and Fashion show has raised more than $9.3 million in support of women’s health. Money raised at this year’s event will support areas including new technology in the treatment of breast cancer, women with disabilities and reconstructive surgery using 3D bioprinting. New Website Unveiled The Long Island Radio & Television Historical Society is proud to announce the inauguration of their newly designed and updated website. The website can be accessed at: https://lirtvhs. org/ OUR HISTORY In 1995, it became apparent that the FAA radio station, once the site of the WWI historic Telefunken radio station, was to be abandoned and destroyed. A movement to save the property was undertaken by Constance Currie and the Sayville Historical Society. Although there was a lot of support, the attempt unfortunately failed after a massive fire destroyed the remaining

buildings. What was left was bulldozed along with the antenna fields. As a result, Constance Currie and Ralph Williams, a renowned radio historian, collector of Atwater Kent radios, and author, encouraged the people who had come together to save the Telefunken site, to create a historical society that would keep the history of Long Island radio alive. The first members were from the Sayville Historical Society, Steuben Society, Long Island history buffs, amateur radio operators, and radio engineers who had worked in early RCA, MacKay, and other radio facilities. Chartered by the New York Education

Department as the Friends of Long Island Wireless History, the historical society eventually became the Long Island Radio & Television Historical Society to reﬂect a broader interest in the rich and diverse history of communications on Long Island from early wireless through the beginnings of radio and television. Through the years, the society has exhibited in libraries, the Long Island Maritime Museum, schools and the Fire Island Lighthouse. They are currently working with Suffolk County Community College as well as planning exhibits for the American Airpower Museum in Farmingdale.

Joel donated $1 million to LIHSA, along with his support of the school and its 40-plus-year history of nurturing Long Island’s up and coming artists. “I went to public school on Long Island and I am grateful for the music program and my music teachers for helping provide me the tools for which I have based my career,” he wrote in a letter to the Nassau BOCES Board. This is the third year that Broadway stars have come together to support LIHSA, which is the only Long Island performing arts high school program that offers world-class training and preparation for students who are interested in exploring and pursuing careers in the arts. Last year’s show sold out. “It is deeply touching for these talented Broadway

entertainers to donate their time to put together an unprecedented performance to support LIHSA,” said Nassau BOCES District Superintendent Dr. Robert R. Dillon. “The evening will not only help raise awareness of our stellar arts programs, it will also provide our current and future LIHSA students the opportunity to see how successful they can become!” For more than 40 years, LIHSA has been a training ground for public school students who want to pursue a career in dance, drama, filmmaking, instrumental and vocal music, musical theatre, theater technology and visual arts. Some will climb to remember a relative. Some will climb to honor a friend. And some will climb to show gratitude for the great sacrifices made 16 years ago. Together, firefighters, police officers and the public will climb the stairs of Belmont Park to pay respects to our nation’s fallen firefighters and to support their survivors. On Sunday, October 1st, the Fire Department of New York (FDNY) and the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF) will host the 3rd Annual National Stair Climb for Fallen Firefighters at Belmont Park. This is the first time the Stair Climb will be held in Nassau County, paying tribute to the 496 Long Islanders who were among the almost 3,000 killed 16 years ago. Of those, 125 fallen FDNY members were from Long Island.

“The National Fallen Firefighters Foundation performs extraordinary work providing resources for the families of fallen heroes across the country,” said Fire Commissioner Daniel A. Nigro. “By climbing steps each year, every participant not only raises funds to support the families of FDNY members who made the Supreme Sacrifice, they also ensure those we have lost are never forgotten.” Gates open and on-site registration begins at 8:30 am. As hundreds did last October, participants will climb the equivalent of 110 stories to symbolize the steps of the World

Trade Center Towers. All climbers will receive a t-shirt and a name badge for the firefighter they are honoring. “The National Stair Climb for Fallen Firefighters is a journey of hope, raising funds to help programs for surviving relatives of firefighters across the country,” said Chief Ronald J. Siarnicki, Executive Director of the NFFF. “Approximately 80 firefighters die in the line of duty each year in the U.S. and this is a way to let the families know they and their firefighters are not forgotten.” The stair climb is a family event and we encourage you to bring

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilwoman Michele Johnson today joined with members of the Town’s Department of Environmental Resources and volunteers from the North Oyster Bay Baymen’s Association (NOBBA) to reseed Oyster Bay Harbor with over 250,000 oysters grown out and matured by the Town through FLUPSY (FLoating UPweller System) silos. This initiative improves water quality, bolsters the local economy and improves the resiliency of our coastal communities by restoring shellfish populations to the harbor. “Oyster Bay Harbor has long been considered one of the crown jewels of Oyster Bay, and I’m proud to say that under my administration we are now doing more than ever before to improve its water quality,” Supervisor Saladino stated. “The Town, along with volunteers from the North Oyster Bay Baymen’s Association, is heading out on the waters and reseeding the harbor with 250,000 oysters which have been grown out and

matured through the Town’s FLUPSY system.” The Town’s FLUPSY program, short for Floating Upweller System, has been integral to increasing shellfish populations around Oyster Bay Harbor. At the beginning of the summer, the Town purchased seed oysters from Cornell Cooperative Extension and placed them in the FLUPSYs. This allowed the seed oysters to mature and grow out through a steady diet of nutrient-rich water and protection from natural predators such as crabs. “This purchase was largely made by reinvesting into the waters the revenue generated from shellfish licensing permits,” Supervisor Saladino added. “Protecting our natural assets is critically important for our Town, and by restoring and reseeding our shellfish populations, we not only strengthen the local economy, but also ensure we are working to keep our waters clean. Quite simply, there is no Oyster Bay without oysters!” Councilwoman Johnson noted that shellfish filter

up to 50 gallons of water a day through their feeding process, so the preservation of Oyster Bay Harbor’s water quality through the repopulation of shellfish is an important component of making the water cleaner for swimming, fishing, boating, and all life in the Harbor. “I am proud to be a part of such a great environmental initiative that will preserve the quality, resiliency, and natural beauty of our local waterways for generations to come,” Councilwoman Johnson said. “Protecting our natural assets is top priority and I’m proud to announce that the Town is currently looking to expand this initiative to the South Shore to help repopulate and reseed the Great South Bay – as the Great South Bay once boasted a wealth of shellfish but is now practically devoid.” For more information on the Town’s FLUPSY program, please contact the Town’s Department of Environmental Resources at 516.677.5943.

Reseeding the Harbor

As part of its final preparation for the 20172018 school year, the Syosset Central School District hosted a threeday Learning Institute designed to bring teachers together to share new and innovative ways to use technology in the classroom and “crosscut” subject areas to make learning experiences truly dynamic for students this year. Following a day filled with on-site and departmental meetings at the various schools, the district’s entire instructional staff gathered at Syosset High School for an inspirational assembly led by Superintendent of Schools Dr. Tom Rogers. In his address, Dr. Rogers stated that the “why” of educators’ work must begin and end with their students. Not merely to prepare them for the colleges that will be their

next step, but rather at the futures they will inhabit after. “Our obligation is to prepare students as best we can to live successfully in that future. So that they raise families and enjoy all of the privileges of living in this wonderful country and realize all of the joys of realizing their own full potential,” said Dr. Rogers. “That’s got to be the ‘why’ that drives us, and the future that we can imagine for those students has to be the future that we prepare them for.” Several speakers delivered inspiring messages as well, including Board of Education President Dr. Michael Cohen and Deputy Superintendent Adele Bovard, who served as the mistress of ceremonies for the assembly portions of the conference days. The assembly was followed by workshops

on technology and crosscutting for teachers of all grade levels held at the high school led by 77 trained teacher facilitators. The third day of the conference featured 65 secondarylevel workshops conducted in an EdCamp format. EdCamp is a participantdriven experience in which teachers submit ideas and lead workshops on a variety of instructional topics. At the end of each of the final two days, teachers of all grade levels reconvened in the high school auditorium for a “share-out” to share their thoughts on the different skills they learned. Teachers shared their thoughts verbally, as well as through Padlet and Twitter posts, which were shown live on a large screen in the auditorium.

Tax Collection Closed Oyster Bay Receiver of Taxes James J. Stefanich wishes to notify town residents that the 2017 General Tax Collection Warrant has been closed, and all related records have been turned over to the Nassau County Treasurer. The original warrant specified that $586,014,575.54 was to be collected to support Nassau County, Town of Oyster Bay, and special tax districts. Assessment reductions and tax cancellations amounted to $15,002.66 (0.002%). Nassau County’s portion was $277,636,494.62

(47%). The Town of Oyster Bay’s portion was $124,703,617.65 (21%), and the special tax district’s portion was $173,544,839.72 (30%). A list of delinquent property payments was reported to the County Treasurer, amounting to $10,114,620.89 (1.8%). Receiver Stefanich noted that property owners with delinquent taxes would be contacted by the Nassau County Treasurer’s office. Owners will be receiving letters specifying taxes owed along with applicable penalties and late payment fees.

The 2017-2018 School Tax levy bill printing will commence on October 1st, and mailing will start in early October. Receiver Stefanich asks property owners to be patient when calling the Tax Office for information on property taxes due to the usual high volume of calls received at the beginning of a new tax collection. Residents are requested to have the school district, section, block and lot numbers of the property in question available. This information is listed on the tax bill and on the property deed.

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino, Town Councilmembers Michele Johnson, Lou Imbroto, and Tom Hand, along with Town Clerk Jim Altadonna, Jr. conducted a ceremonial street renaming dedication on Saturday, September 16th in honor of fallen Fire Department New York (FDNY) Firefighter William N. Tolley, who died in the line of duty on April 20th of this year from injuries he sustained while fighting a secondalarm fire in Ridgewood, Queens. The ceremony included a street sign unveiling at the corner of Crestline Avenue and Acme Avenue in Bethpage. Another sign will also be permanently displayed at the intersection of Stewart Avenue and Crestline Avenue. The signs are situated near the home where Firefighter Tolley lived and read “F.D.N.Y. Firefighter William N. Tolley Way.” Firefighter Tolley grew up in Bethpage. Later in

life, William purchased his house in his hometown with his wife, Marie, and his daughter, Isabella. William served as an FDNY firefighter with Ladder Company 135 and was a 14-year veteran of the department. He also served as a volunteer firefighter with the Hicksville Fire Department, having served during 9/11, and most recently with the Bethpage Fire Department. During his tenure with the FDNY, Firefighter Tolley quickly earned the respect of his colleagues for his dedication and care for his brothers and sisters in the fire service. “Firefighter Tolley was loved and respected by his family, our residents and his brothers and sisters of the fire service,” said Supervisor Saladino said. “William is a true hero who made the ultimate sacrifice in serving and protecting his fellow citizens. This street, in the community where he resided, will serve as a reminder to all residents of his service

and sacrifice for his fellow citizens.” As a child, William always aspired to be a firefighter and he treated everyday with the FDNY as a blessing and a privilege. To those who had the pleasure to know William, it was no surprise that he was able to leave such an indelible mark, both socially and professionally. William had a unique ability to connect with people and felt a tremendous sense of duty as a firefighter to stand up for those in need. He excelled as a firefighter, a husband and father and even as a musician. There are many facets to William and his remarkable legacy will be long remembered. “William cared about everyone he came in contact with,” Supervisor Saladino concluded. “This dedication ceremony symbolizes the Town of Oyster Bay’s appreciation for Firefighter Tolley’s commitment to our residents.”

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino, Councilman Louis B. Imbroto, Councilman Thomas P. Hand and Town Clerk James Altadonna Jr. recently attended the Town of Oyster Bay’s 10th annual Autism Walk held at John J. Burns Town Park.

This walk has helped raise awareness for autism and supports those on the spectrum. The event benefits the Fay J. Lindner Center for Autism & Developmental Disabilities, a dedicated facility that offers families comprehensive assessments, family

support and updated information on autism research while also building awareness.
