The Twilight Wish Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to honor and enrich the lives of seniors through intergenerational Twilight Wish celebrations. Since the foundation’s founding in 2003, their goal has been to make the world a nicer place to age, one Twilight Wish at a time. When a Twilight Wish is granted, a senior is recognized for all that they have done throughout their lives and is shown that they are appreciated and valued. This organization truly makes a difference in the lives of seniors nationwide. Often the elderly gets overlooked or they simply can’t seem to achieve their goals on their own. This is where Twilight Wish steps in. Judy was a local wish recipient from Kings Park. Her wish was to visit her mother in Rochester and take her to her favorite restaurant. Judy received round-trip plane tickets, a hotel stay, a car rental and a gift certificate to her mother’s favorite restaurant from this foundation! The process of applying to be a wish recipient is fairly simple. You can visit their website at www. twilightwish.org and click on the “Wishes” tab followed by “Request A Twilight Wish”. From here you can start the process. Applications can be submitted for yourself or on behalf of someone else. The foundation has a committee that meets on a monthly basis to review new applications and they determine the eligibility of the applicants and wish requests. If approved, the foundation will grant the wish as funding and resources become available (if they are not already available).

New York State Troopers Honor Two Of Northwell’s Finest Ronda Gross, RN, MSN, vice president of Northwell NetworkCare and Mark Jarrett, MD, SVP, chief quality officer for Northwell Health, have each received the Doctor Chandler award from the New York State Troopers Police Benevolent Association (PBA), in recognition of their outstanding medical expertise and development of the highest level of care for New York State Troopers and their families. Both Ms. Gross and Dr. Jarrett have worked with the State Trooper Surgeons, a division of the official union of New York State Troopers – the NYS Troopers PBA, for several years. They have each played a direct role in the creation of the PBA’s Statewide Health Care Navigation Service, providing necessary assistance, to some 15,000 Troopers and their family members. In doing so, both Ms. Gross and Dr. Jarrett have protected those who protect the people of New York. Ronda Gross, who serves as a medical liaison to the medical care team, has played a direct role in guiding access to care for many NYS Troopers. Her relationship with the New York State Troopers began in September of 2015 when she was asked to initiate a referral relationship with their organization. In response to that request, Ms. Gross created the NYS Troopers and PBA Hotline a dedicated line to the clinical care team of Northwell registered nurses available 24/7 to assist New York State Troopers. NYS Trooper Sergeant John Antonelli serves as an example of this collaborative relationship. After sustaining critical injuries in the line of duty, Sgt. Antonelli underwent several complex surgeries at Lenox Hill Hospital. From the beginning of
his health crisis, Ms. Gross and her team took the lead in organizing his hospital stay, scheduling his medical appointments and surgeries, even participated in a Trooper escort upon discharge. It was thanks to the ongoing collaboration of each team involved in his care that, Sgt. Antonelli was able to leave the hospital after five days of inpatient care on his own to continue his recovery at home. “In health care we’re here to serve, much like the New York State Troopers protect and serve,” said Ronda. Gross. “Receiving this award is an honor that validates what we do every day at Northwell NetworkCare, providing the best possible care for everyone.” Dr. Mark Jarrett, who served as a Trooper Surgeon for the past four years, is now a chief medical administrator on the advisory board of the State Trooper Surgeons program. In this capacity, Dr. Jarrett was instrumental in developing a transport system for Troopers in need, either moving them from one health system location to another or bringing them home following hospitalization. In addition, Dr. Jarrett has also served on the NYS Troopers business leadership committee. “We are honored to receive this award from the NYS Troopers PBA,” said Dr. Jarrett, “The opportunity to help those who serve and their families is our reward.” “Northwell Health continues to be a stellar option for many of our NYS Troopers and we sincerely appreciate the relationships we have built with Ronda Gross and Dr. Mark Jarrett,” said Michael Brooks, Director of Medical Operations for the State Trooper Surgeons
Program. “They have both played an invaluable role in developing key communication protocols for our healthcare navigation program, helping patients gain access to the right care at the right time. Register For The Enhanced STAR Program Oyster Bay Town Tax Receiver James Stefanich would like to notify residents of recent changes to the Enhanced School Tax Relief (STAR) Program. New York State’s Enhanced STAR program provides eligible senior homeowners with relief on their property taxes. There are two programs, the STAR Credit and STAR Exemption. You cannot
receive both the Credit and Exemption. Receiver Stefanich stated, “Due to a change in New York State Law, any resident receiving the Enhanced STAR Exemption or Enhanced STAR Credit is now required to enroll in the Income Verification Program (IVP). Senior cannot receive the Enhanced STAR if they do not enroll in IVP.”

Bethpage High School senior Eirini Drosos was recently named a semifinalist in the 65th annual National Merit Scholarship program. Eirini is one of 16,000 semifinalists who have been chosen to compete for a finalist spot. From there, 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $31 million will be awarded. Students around the nation qualified by
taking last year’s PSAT/ NMSQT test. An active member of the high school community, Eirini is a member of the pep band, swim team, ethics team and the philosophy club. Additionally, she is the treasurer of the senior class. Outside of school she volunteers at a local animal shelter. In addition to Eirini being named a semifinalist, five
students were named Commended Students in the program. The district congratulates Rahul Busri, Michael D’Avanzo, Doreen Dong, Matthew Fantry and Jessica Kneller for their recognitions. National Merit finalists will be named later this year, and winners of scholarships will comprise about half of the finalists.

Five Students Selected As National Merit Semifinalists The Plainview-Old Bethpage Central School District is proud to announce five students at Plainview-Old Bethpage John F. Kennedy High School have been recognized as semifinalists in the 65th National Merit Scholarship competition. The students—Elizabeth Korn, Gregory Kies, Ziho Kim, Cameron Robinson, and Kristen Dong—are among just 16,000 students in the nation being considered
for approximately 7,600 awards worth a total of more than $31 million. Approximately 90 percent of students recognized as semifinalists are expected to achieve finalist standing. “We are incredibly proud of Elizabeth, Gregory, Ziho, Cameron, and Kristen for their pursuit of excellence,” said Plainview-Old Bethpage Central School District Superintendent Dr. Lorna Lewis. “We are thrilled to celebrate this exciting
achievement with them.” The National Merit Scholarship Program was established in 1955 as a not-for-profit organization to provide educational opportunities for academically talented high school students throughout the nation. The National Merit Scholarship Committee has allocated over 423,000 scholarships valued at nearly $1.7 billion to more than three million students nationwide.

Town Eliminates Sidewalk Permit Fees

Oyster Bay Town Councilman Steve Labriola today announced that the Town Board took a step forward on the issue of sidewalk repairs by unanimously approving the elimination of sidewalk repair permit fees for homeowners. In addition to the cost of actual repair, property owners previously paid the Town of Oyster Bay a permitting fee of $100 per 100 linear feet. The permitting fee will no longer be collected. Councilman Labriola stated, “We recognize that sidewalk maintenance provides significant benefits to the community
while maintaining a safe and useable infrastructure throughout our communities. To remove barriers and financial burdens placed on property owners, the Town Board voted unanimously to eliminate the permit fee related to repairing damaged residential sidewalks. This fee waiver will help enhance the quality of our communities through proper sidewalk maintenance while no longer burdening residents.” The law approved by the Town Board still requires a permit for work but waives fees if the applicant is an
individual who owns or resides at the residential premises for which a permit for the construction or repair of sidewalks is being sought. “We understand that homeowners are stretched thin, and that’s why we are making every effort to protect your wallet, added Supervisor Joseph Saladino. From putting $2.6 million back in the pockets of residents through a property tax cut to now eliminating fees for sidewalk repair, this Town Board is keeping taxpayer’s first-and-foremost in our minds.”
