Vanderbilt’s Storied “Alva” Yacht William K. Vanderbilt II (1878-1944) spent years dreaming of and designing his 264-foot yacht Alva.

The ship, named after his mother, Alva Vanderbilt Belmont, was custombuilt at the KruppGermaniawerft shipyard in Kiel, Germany.

On August 5th, the Vanderbilt Museum marked the 75th

anniversary of the yacht’s wartime service and recalled its tragic sinking on August 5, 1943.

Aboard the Alva, steaming out of Kiel on March 5, 1931, William and Rosamond Vanderbilt began the ship’s inaugural voyage from Europe to Miami and then New York.

The trip was preparation for their epic seven-month

circumnavigation of the globe that began in July of that year. During the voyage, Mr. Vanderbilt collected marine life, invertebrates and cultural artifacts for his Centerport museum.

Life’s Next Great Adventure “Life is either a daring adventure, or nothing at all.”

– Helen Keller As I awaken on the morning of my forty-fourth birthday I am reminded of the first thought that crossed my mind four years ago, on the morning of my fortieth birthday. The thought was this: “Okay kid, the first half of the ride is over. What are you going to do with the second half? You’d better make it count.”

I knew immediately that for all the accomplishments I’d achieved up until that point - becoming a professional writer, some travel, motherhood, great times with people I love, some spiritual growth - one thing that seemed to be missing in that moment was my next great adventure. I’d always been fascinated by horses and felt a sense of peace around them. I wanted to further explore that connection. I immediately went down to a local horse ranch in Melville, called Thomas School of Horsemanship, and signed up for horseback riding lessons.

I’ll never forget the way my heart pounded and the initial fear I felt as I mounted a horse for the very first time. It was a combination of, “My God, this animal is big and high off the ground!” and “I’m doing it! I’m learning to ride a horse.”

At the close of my first lesson, I couldn’t remember the last time I’d felt so accomplished and proud to have tried something new and unfamiliar. Now, four years later, riding horses is as natural to me as breathing; it is my sanctuary. I enjoy riding English-saddle when I am in New York, and Western saddle when I am in Florida. When I am on a horse, the chaos of 21st century life melts away and things feel simple and beautiful.

We all need that sacred retreat in our lives; something to look forward to that takes us out of our daily routine and allows us to be pure joyful consciousness.

You elected to come into this physical plane to experience all that being human has to offer. Fill your life with as many moments as you can that make you feel alive.

suddenly got an image in my mind from a scene in the iconic 1985 movie, Back to the Future (one of my all-time favorites).

Doc Brown points to three illuminated dates on a screen, on the DeLorean Time Machine’s dashboard. He explains to Marty, “This one tells you where you are; this one tells you where you’re going; this one tells you where you’ve been.”

If you visualize your mind as a camera, you can choose to pan out for a wider shot of your life.

It’s a great exercise and offers the gift of perspective to examine where you are, where you’re going and where you’ve been. Try to see your life from that higher perspective. You will gain some clarity and inspiration that may direct you towards your life’s next great adventure.

For many of us who are in our forties and beyond, the first half of the ride may indeed be behind us, but the second half, backed by earned wisdom, can be filled with unlimited new experiences if you allow it.

Your life’s next great adventure is just one bold decision away.

President Franklin D. Roosevelt asked yacht owners to donate their boats to the U.S. Navy. Mr. Vanderbilt answered the call.

On November 4, 1941, a month before the attack on Pearl Harbor, he gave the Alva to the Navy, which converted it to a patrol gunboat. The ship was renamed the USS Plymouth (PG 57).

The Vanderbilt family had served in every major conflict since the War of 1812. In 1917, William Vanderbilt was commissioned as a lieutenant commander in the U.S. Naval Reserve.

From playing football fanatic, Hayden Fox, on the long running sitcom Coach; Zeek Braverman on Parenthood; and countless big screen roles, actor Craig T. Nelson’s career has been as versatile as it is prolific.

It was his voice work in 2004’s Disney Pixar movie, The Incredibles, that introduced Nelson to a young audience. His voice is so recognizable as the voice of Mr. Incredible, that the world stops spinning for a beat whenever a starstruck child hears him speak.

Nelson recently played Mary Steenburgen’s husband in the romantic comedy, Book Club and resumed his role as Mr. Incredible in Incredibles 2.

Allison Kugel: What does an ensemble piece like Book Club allow you to do as an actor?

Craig T. Nelson: The opportunity to work with the different characters that are being played broadens what you can do as an actor. Oftentimes, the way people react differently to different people they meet, it’s that same dynamic, and it can be something of an adventure. Although in Book Club, most of my scenes are with Mary [Steenburgen]. There are only one or two scenes where I’m with everyone.

Allison Kugel: Book Club addresses that mid-to-later-life slump that people can slide into without even realizing it’s happening. How do you think men experience this phase of life differently from women?

Craig T. Nelson: I think we experience it in much the same way. It depends

upon societal pressures. Part of the confusion is the result of what society is demanding now, which is pretty much all youth oriented.

Cosmetically and pharmaceutically you’re supposed to be able to prolong your life, or at least the appearance of it. The reality is that you do age. Yes, we are living longer, but there’s more pressure. I suppose it’s how that manifests in each of us, which has to do with our own personality. There’s a lot of pressure to be young. But there is also a lot of pressure being old, not to get any older. I think that is so screwed up.

Allison Kugel: In Book Club, your wife, played by Mary Steenburgen, is upset because she feels your marriage has fallen into a slump. Do you think marriage should be able to go through its natural ebbs and flows?

Craig T. Nelson: If you’re married to your best friend, as I am, you have to realize you’re going to have ups and downs. You’re physically going to change, emotionally you’re going to change. You have to adapt and be prepared for that stuff. That’s also part of the adventure. It seems like just yesterday I was talking to older actors about aging. I was a young working actor, and they were all telling me how difficult it was for them, and how they were approaching a period in their life where they felt they weren’t working as much. When it started happening to me, I think I was prepared for it to a certain degree.

Allison Kugel: People may not know that you began your career as a standup comedian.

Craig T. Nelson: Barry Levinson and

I did stand up [comedy] together for four years, and then another guy, Rudy DeLuca, joined us. We wrote and performed comedy, and then we worked with Tim Conway, John Byner and Alan King. That’s how I started in the business.

Allison Kugel: How did that experience inform how you approach a role?

Craig T. Nelson: I was never really interested in doing standup comedy.

Barry Levinson and I were in the Oxford Theatre together, which was a theatre group in LA. We got to talking and Barry said, “Why don’t we do a standup act?” I had never done that and never even thought of it, but we put an act together. We went out and auditioned and started doing clubs. It was an intro into the business, and I met so many incredible people during that time. It does give me a different perspective on acting. Comedy helped me to enlarge and be better at what I did. Another important thing is that you just get better as you get older.

I’m so much more comfortable in a scene now than I ever was. There are so many experiences and so many people to draw on. It’s a wonderful place to be.

Allison Kugel: This is not your first time playing Mary Steenburgen’s husband. You also played husband and wife in the 2009 movie, The Proposal, alongside Ryan Reynolds and Sandra Bullock. How was it playing her husband again in Book Club?

Craig T. Nelson: She’s so much fun to work with. She’s got this wonderful quirkiness to her that is so beautiful. It’s also very challenging, because you need to stay on top of your game with her, as with all the actresses in this film. I’ve worked with Diane [Keaton], I’ve worked with Jane [Fonda], I hadn’t met Candice [Bergen] until this film, so that was neat. I look forward to continuing to work with Mary. There is an understanding between me and Mary. You’re able to ask questions of each other or address problems in a scene together. There’s no wandering around, trying to get to the truth of something.

Allison Kugel: Let’s switch gears and discuss Incredibles 2! In the first movie, The Incredibles, your character, Mr. Incredible is struggling with living life as a civilian. He’s dying to be a superhero again and to use his powers. Holly Hunter’s character, Elastigirl, wanted a normal family life.

In Incredibles 2, it’s reversed. She’s

out being a superhero and you’re the stay-at-home dad. How does that go for Mr. Incredible?

Craig T. Nelson: He doesn’t quite understand it and is feeling rejected, like, “Why don’t they want me out there?” He now has to take a back seat and for him that’s difficult. He makes the sacrifice for his wife. He’s got a resentment going on, but as you watch him at home you get to know these kids in a way that’s fun and interesting. And you get to see a guy have to adapt and get to know his children in a way that he hasn’t. That was neat for me to play.

Allison Kugel: How do you get into character when you’re voicing Mr. Incredible?

Craig T. Nelson: You prepare ahead of time in the session, especially vocally because there are a lot of different ranges you have to get to.

There are scenes when you’re doing a lot of yelling and shouting. And it’s a long and involved process that’s complexly different from regular acting.

And then you have to convince this kid that you are! And you feel like an idiot trying to get a seven-year-old to believe you (laughs). They look at you with this wonder, yet at the same time disbelief. It gets confusing even for me.

Allison Kugel: My nine-year-old is obsessed! He loved both The Incredibles and Incredibles 2, when it hit theatres this summer.

Craig T. Nelson: The special FX are extraordinary. Since 2004 when the original movie was out, they’ve developed a whole new range of different processes that have gone into this second movie, including its color enrichment. For me, the exciting thing about the second movie is the character Jack Jack, the baby, really comes alive and that’s going to be so much fun for people to see. What’s so great about this movie is that it’s a family deal. You can take your family to this movie and have a great time. And same with Book Club.

It’s two movies I’m proud to let my family watch.

Allison Kugel: I’m sure you’ve watched the first movie, The Incredibles, with your grandchildren.

What do they think of you playing Mr. Incredible?

There is much evidence to support the importance of preschool socialization and learning in 2018.

According to a September 3, 2018 article in U.S. News and World Report, titled, Teachers Are the Key to Quality Education, “A child’s first five years are the most critical for neurological development, with their brains forming more than one million neural connections per second.

This is the time when the foundation is built for future success.” The article goes on to say, “This is why access to early childhood education programs and to quality early educators matters so much.”

A Washington Post article dated January 19, 2016, questions, “Is kindergarten the new first grade?” The article boldly asking, “Is Kindergarten

the new first grade?” and stating, “It’s been years since academics came to dominate kindergarten, as the importance of standardized tests grew in the No Child Left Behind era.”

The Toddler Arts & Crafts Program is 8 weeks in duration, and residents who sign their toddler up for the program must choose one class per week, per child. Classes will take place on Wednesdays at 10 am (two year olds only) or 11 am (three and four year olds) from Wednesday, September 26 through November 21.

Classes will also take place on Thursdays at 10 am (two year olds only) or 11 am (three and four year olds) from September 27 through November 22.

Each class is about 30 minutes to an hour long.

The cost of the program is $25 per child who is a Town resident, and $30 per child whose guardian is a Town resident but not

the child. Space is limited and upon registration, the child’s birth certificate and a tax or utility bill will be required to validate age and proof of residency. A guardian must be present during the class.

The Toddler’s Arts & Crafts Program is run by the Town’s Parks Department, Recreation Division.

Award winning journalist Geralyn Lucas, author of Why I Wore Lipstick to My Mastectomy and Then Came Life, will speak at the Annual Celebration of Survivorship Evening of the Adelphi New York Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program.

Both of Lucas’s memoirs were translated around the world and received starred reviews in Library Journal. The television film production of Lipstick garnered an Emmynomination and was an Entertainment Weekly “Must Watch of the Week.”

Katerina Dinas Raptis, a breast cancer survivor who is the co-founder of KROH, was diagnosed when she was 32. She says that while having breast cancer was “a nightmare,” she was blessed with the support of her family and excellent medical care. Many women do not have such support so she was determined to help. She and her husband, George Raptis, and sister, Despina Yarian, established Kat’s Ribbon of Hope in 2013.

assistant principal of Jonas E. Salk Middle School.

O’Grady follows previous Jonas E. Salk Middle School Assistant Principal Patrick Mulligan, who retired at the end of the 2017-2018 school year.

An East Atlantic Beach resident, O’Grady is a long time member of the Jonas E. Salk family where she has been an English teacher for the past 18 years and was the English department chairperson for four years before the

restructuring of district administration. She enters the assistant principal role with a wealth of knowledge, having earned a bachelor’s degree in English Literature/Writing at Marist College and her master’s degree in Secondary Education at The Levittown Public CUNY Queens College.

Gardiners Avenue and Northside

The Levittown Public Schools is pleased to welcome Dyanne Case as the new assistant principal of Gardiners Avenue Elementary School and Northside Elementary School. She previously served as a reading specialist in the district for five years.

Case, a Port Washington

resident, has been a teacher for 24 years, teaching in a variety of areas. She began her teaching career in the New York City Department of Education in Brooklyn where she was a fourth grade classroom teacher, a second grade classroom teacher, a social studies cluster teacher and finally, a reading specialist. Case then served as a reading specialist for eight years in Hempstead before arriving in the Levittown Public Schools as a reading specialist. In addition, she is currently an adjunct professor at Queens College in the elementary education department.

Tyler Bissoondial, an eighth-grader at Grand Avenue Middle School in the Bellmore-Merrick Central School District, was recently chosen as one of the three hundred semifinalists in the Broadcom MASTERS competition.

Bissoondial conducted his research project as a seventh-grader, under the guidance of science research teacher, Tami Cruz.

“Tyler is a very hardworking and talented student who is always willing to help his peers,” said Cruz.

He was nominated to participate in the national Broadcom MASTERS competition after winning first place in the regional Long Island

Science and Engineering Fair in March.

This is the second consecutive year Bissoondial has received this nomination to participate in Broadcom MASTERS, and his first time selected as a semifinalist.

“I couldn’t be prouder of Tyler’s work and Ms. Cruz’s mentorship throughout the process,” added Principal Carlo Conte.

Broadcom MASTERS is the nation’s premier science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) competition for middle school students.

Thirty finalists will be announced on September 18th.

6. Lights and Wipers— Make sure all exterior and interior lights are working so you can see and be seen. Check the fluid level in the windshield washer reservoir and replace wiper blades that are torn, cracked or don’t properly clean your windshield.

In addition, the council recommends a thorough vehicle inspection by a trusted professional service technician as winter magnifies existing problems such as pings, hard starts, sluggish performance or rough

idling.

Drivers should keep their vehicle’s gas tank at least half-full to decrease the chances of moisture forming in the gas lines and possibly freezing and stock an emergency kit with an ice scraper and snow brush, jumper cables, flashlight, blanket, extra clothes, bottled water, dry food snacks and needed medication.

The Car Care Council is the source of information for the “Be Car Care Aware” consumer education campaign promoting the benefits of regular vehicle care, maintenance and repair to consumers.
