Moriches Field Brewing Company received $18,750 to revitalize an empty downtown space.

(Cheers to that.)

Revitalization grants are just one of the ways we help businesses on Long Island and in the Rockaways. For Moriches Field Brewing Company, a grant from our economic development program was a perfect fit to help them renovate a previously vacant property. A discount through our Vacant Space Revival Program saved them more than $4,000 on their electric bills, and rebates for upgrading to LED lighting are keeping them saving month after month.

Helping revitalize our Island, one business at a time, is something we’re proud to be part of and something definitely worth celebrating.

Water District Touts Excellent Water Quality Throughout Contaminant

Residents Invited To ‘Walk For Autism’ At John Burns Park September 23rd

Treatment

Process Water Quality Remains High In The HWD

The Hicksville Water District (HWD) believes it is important to update residents on the quality of their water. As such, the District is proud to announce that it has made tremendous strides in wellhead treatment for emerging contaminants over the last five years. As talks of the new regulations for emerging contaminants began in 2018, the HWD was aggressive in its pursuit of water treatment technology, all of which was done despite issues presented by the COVID-19 pandemic and significant problems plaguing the supply chain of treatment materials. A half-decade later, a majority of the District’s affected wells have wellhead treatment installed as residents continue to receive safe, clean drinking water.

“The health and safety of our residents’ drinking water is the foremost

priority of the Hicksville Water District,” said HWD Chairman William Schuckmann. “We are proud to say that all of our drinking water since emerging contaminant regulations were set in place has met or surpassed all state drinking water quality standards. We never rested on our laurels throughout the entire process and will continue to provide our residents with the highest-quality water available.”

Even before New York State set maximum contaminant levels (MCL) standards for emerging contaminants in 2020, the HWD was hard at work, pursing the installation of Advanced Oxidation Process (AOP) systems and Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) at all well sites containing water above the MCL. The District estimated that the infrastructure

improvements would cost roughly $70 million total. However, it was determined to pass as little of this cost off to ratepayers as possible. District officials were persistent in their pursuit of government grants to cover costs of the projects. These efforts have resulted in the acquisition of approximately $36.7 million in grant funding to date, cutting the cost to residents by more than half.

Despite the success of its efforts over the last several years, the HWD continues to push forward in its mission in ensuring residents receive safe drinking water. The District expects to have new AOP treatment systems up and running at two more of its plants this fall. With these systems coming online, the HWD will have 10 wells from which it can distribute clean water to its residents.

Town To Host 15th Walk Benefiting Advantage Care Health’s Center For Autism & Developmental Disabilities

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilwoman Laura Maier invite residents to participate in the Town of Oyster Bay’s 15th Annual “Walk for Autism” at Burns Park in Massapequa on Saturday, September 23rd. The walk will benefit Advantage Care Health Center’s Fay J. Lindner Center for Autism & Developmental Disabilities, one of the leading treatment and outpatient assessment programs for people with Autism Spectrum Disorders.

Supervisor Saladino said, “We are pleased to once again host this event to benefit the Fay J. Linder Center for Autism and Developmental Disabilities,

which offers the highest quality, state-of-the-art clinical services to people with Autism Spectrum disorders. From hosting social skill development groups to assisting with medicine management and educating community organizations, Advantage Care Health Center does truly outstanding work in our Town that we invite all residents to support through this walk.”

Registration for the event begins at 10 a.m., with the walk commencing at 11 a.m. and a tailgate party immediately following. The registration fee is $10 for individuals and $25 for families. All registrants will receive entrance to the

post-walk tailgate party with refreshments and free T-shirts while supplies last.

Councilwoman Maier added, “It is estimated that 1 in every 54 children in the United States are affected by Autism, and early diagnosis leads to an increased ability to help through intervention services. That’s why this walk is so important, as it increases both education and awareness while bringing our community together.”

For more information, contact the Town of Oyster Bay Parks Department, Recreation Division, at (516) 797-7945 or visit www.advantagecaredtc. org/TOBwalk to register or donate online.

With hospitals facing a nationwide blood shortage, Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Vicki Walsh and Supervisor Joseph Saladino invites residents to attend a Blood Collection Drive on Tuesday, September 26th from 1pm to 7pm at the Hicksville Athletic Center, located at 167 S. Broadway in Hicksville.

Councilwoman Walsh stated, “Blood supplies are critically needed for local hospitals to meet the demand and continue saving lives. Please consider participating in this blood drive to help bolster our blood banks and ensure as many people as possible can

be helped. Together, we can give the gift of life though a simple blood donation.”

Appointments are preferred for the Town’s Blood Drive. To qualify as a donor, a person must be between the ages of 17 and 75 years old (16 with parental permission and 76 or older with a doctor’s note), weigh at least 110 pounds and not have donated blood within the last 56 days. Anyone who received a tattoo within the past 12 months is ineligible to donate. It is recommended that donors eat well (low fat) and drink fluids in the days before the Blood Drive. Additionally, all donors will receive

a voucher for a free Blizzard at Dairy Queen. Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino added, “It’s quick, easy, and safe to donate a single pint of blood which can save up to three lives. Donating blood at the Hicksville Athletic Center, is an incredible way for all of us to pitch in and give back, to help ease the burden of our Healthcare Heroes as they continue to provide lifesaving efforts.”

Special-Needs Volunteers Are At A Premium

of their day, many specialneeds individuals perform a range of tasks for not-forprofits that help to keep the doors open and the milk of

human kindness flowing.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau and AmeriCorps survey, volunteer participation was

at 23.2 percent, a drop of 7 percent between 2019 and 2021 – the largest decrease the survey has seen since its 2002 inception.

Special-needs individuals step in to do the most basic tasks to more intricate things such as data entry, interacting with donors and computer and office tasks.

“Our clients make the decision about which organizations they’d like to volunteer with,” says Christina Abbinanti of Life’s WORC in Garden City. She said that clients participate as part of the Program Without Walls that allows special-needs individuals to integrate into the community. The clients volunteer at a range of organizations throughout the week. “They also learn valuable job and interpersonal skills.”

At Hair We Share on Long Island, special-needs volunteers keep the doors

open and allow the allvolunteer organization to continue to provide free, hand-laced wigs to medical patients. The wigs, which average $4,000 each, are custom fitted to patients.

“Volunteers are our life blood,” says co-founder Dean Riskin. “We have no paid staff. We have seventyfive-thousand ponytails we are sitting on that need to be sorted, weighed and bagged and we couldn’t do it without them.”

In addition to getting a warm feeling about helping, special-needs volunteers hone important work and

social skills that help them when they apply for jobs.

Learn more about how your not-for-profit organization could partner with them by calling Abbinanti at 516-741-9000, extension 8640; or JoAnn Vitale of RISE Life Services in Riverhead at 631-7276220, ext. 224.

Riskin of Hair We Share, which also accepts donations toward the wig-making process, can be reached at 631-478-2966. Hair We Share is headquartered in Roslyn Heights.

Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center

Touching Art Exhibit In Honor Of

The Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center (ADRC) is proud to announce an inspiring Art Exhibit in collaboration with the Islip Arts Council in Bay Shore, New York. Artwork will be showcased beginning September 18 –September 30 from 11:00 am – 4:00 pm. A reception recognizing the artists with their family members will be held on Thursday, September 21, 2023, at 1:00 pm at the Art Gallery located in the Westfield Shopping Center, Bay Shore, NY at the end by DICK’S Sporting Goods. This exhibition marks the culmination of a yearlong art program, for over 100 local artists, that has spanned multiple sites across Long Island.

The Art Expression Program, a cornerstone initiative of ADRC, has

Art Expression Program

provided a profound avenue for individuals to engage their minds through the transformative power of art. This innovative program has consistently aimed to achieve the following objectives:

• Facilitating Communication through Diverse Art Forms: Participants are encouraged to communicate their thoughts and emotions through a wide array of artistic mediums, fostering connections beyond words.

• Mind Stimulation through Creative Creation: The act of creation stimulates participants’ cognitive faculties, invigorating their mental capacities.

• Boosting Self-Esteem through Relational Bonds: The program has

nurtured self-esteem by fostering meaningful relationships and interactions within a supportive community.

• Celebrating Artistic Diversity: ADRC embraces and celebrates every artwork created by participants, recognizing the uniqueness and personal stories behind each piece.

In the eloquent words of Therapy Techniques Using the Creative Arts (2002), “The creative arts stimulate our senses, our bodies, our thoughts, and feelings. For a period, we transcend the bounds of time, space, and physical limitations. Outside our normal realm of existence, we are free to think, feel, and express what seems natural to us.”

Each artwork on

display carries the weight of unique memories, rekindling a tapestry of lived experiences.

ADRC is a grassroots 501c3 nonprofit organization that offers FREE services and programs to families throughout Long Island. Our mission is to provide care, support, and educational programs for families in need, and to be advocates for local families who are coping with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. All funds raised stay on Long Island.

In 2022, ADRC served over 1000 families with care consultations, support groups, educational workshops, and therapy programs.
